1. Sensory Function: It senses changes (stimuli) within the body (internal environment) and in the outside environment (external environment)

Divisions/Organizations of the Nervous System

Principle Divisions

1. Central Nervous System (CNS)

2. Peripheral Nervous system (PNS)

• *These are based on structure.

CNS

• consists of the brain and spinal cord.

PNS

• consists of cranial nerves (12 pair) coming from the brain and spinal nerves (31 pair) coming from the spinal cord.

Types of Neurons in the CNS and PNS

Sensory or Afferent Neurons

• Conducts nerve impulses from the body toward the CNS.

Motor or Efferent Neurons

• Conduct nerve impulses away from the CNS to muscles and glands.

Association neurons (interneurons)

• Carry nerve impulses from sensory to motor neurons.

• Located in the CNS and are the most numerous type of neuron.

Somatic Nervous System

• Carries conscious sensory information and voluntary motor information (skeletal muscles)

Autonomic Nervous System

• Carries unconscious sensory information and involuntary motor information (smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands).

• Regulates things like: heartbeat, blood pressure, respiration, and digestion.

Sympathetic Division

• “Fight or Flight” response

• Increases heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate.

• Decreases digestive function.

Parasympathetic Division

• “Rest and Digest” system

• Calms the body to conserve and maintain energy

• Decreases heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate.

• Increases digestive function.
