Swakopmund Council Announces N$45 Billion Housing Project

At a brief council meeting on Tuesday, Swakopmund Mayor Juuso Kambueshe announced the opening of an N$45 billion nationwide mass housing project. Spanning over 18 years, it will tremendously benefit the Erongo coastal region.

The Mayor said that this was an exciting time for all Namibians.

“We all know that there is a shortage of over 100 000 houses countrywide,” he said, to add: “We have to invest in the lower income groups.”

The first two years, here at the coast, will be a trial run. A planned 700 new credit-linked houses and 850 new plots will be built in Swakopmund. The Mayor called upon local construction companies to use this opportunity and gain from the influx.

“Why is it we don’t manufacture locks, or door handles; 90% of our construction material is exported,” he quizzed. To those living in shacks, the Mayor said that they should start looking forward to owning a house:

“We have so many people living in shacks in Mondesa, they should start looking at themselves as someone who will live in a house soon.”

According to the National Housing Income and Expenditure Survey (NHIES) conducted in 2009/2010, only 41% of the Namibian population stay in modern built houses; this project aims to increase that number to 60% by 2017.

Furthermore, only 27.8% of the people residing in shacks have access to electricity. 90% of the N$45 billion estimated for this project aims at facilitating individuals that are low to middle income, or those that live either on illegal land or have no access to land alltogether.

The Mayor praised the older generation leaders, saying that they have come up with something magnificent.

However, there have been allegations that funds allocated for Walvis Bay had to be shared with Swakopmund after the town was not included in the initial planning of the project.

Woolworths Staff Fired for Fraud Tanya Calitz

A few distressed customers expressed their dissatisfaction with Walvis Bay Woolworths after employees at the chain store allegedly committed fraudulent activities using customers' accounts.

An unhappy Woolworths customer told the Namib Independent that she was very upset to find items purchased on her account, which she could not recall buying.

“I received my monthly account and immediately felt suspicious when my instalment was higher than normal,” she said.

The customer claimed that she lodged a complaint with the Walvis Bay branch, who

ensured her that they will look into the matter. Shortly after, more such claims and allegations

surfaced, which led to a full investigation into the matter.

According to a former employee, buying on customers’ accounts was not the only unlawful activity committed by other staff members.

“I am aware of the fact that some former and current employees stole the store’s gift vouchers and used it to their own advantage.

"They would give the gift vouchers to their friends and family, while they never even paid the amount of money rewarded on the voucher,” the former employee said.

After the second customer contacted the

Namib Independent, we decided to investigate these allegations.

According to Walvis Bay Woolworths Management, the issue has been dealt with, but they redirected us to Head Office in South Africa for further information.

In a rapid response, Woolworths Head Office in South Africa confirmed that there is truth to the claims.

“Woolworths is aware of allegations of fraud against some employees in its Walvis Bay store. We did launch an investigation against a clerk at the store who subsequently resigned,” confirmed the Corporate Communications Manager.

Six dead springbok were found at the scene of a fatal collision involving three cars and 22 passengers on the C35 road between Henties Bay and Uis. The involvement of a Government vehicle quickly gave rise to poaching allegations against the Ministry of Tourism and Environment (MET) employees.

According to an official source on the scene, who prefers to stay anonymous, at least six springbok were found with deep cuts and rope markings that appear to be from animal traps.

“They were scattered all around the accident scene,” the source continues.

Although, due to the chaotic nature of the accident, little could be established on the spot, it appeared that none of the occupants of the government vehicle seemed to be on official business.

“The lady [MET warden] was dressed quite well, not in any uniform, and the accident took place

late in the evening, on a Friday,” the source pointed out.

Another civilian witness, who arrived shortly after the accident, said that the occupants of the pick-up truck attempted to hide the Government number plate before authorities arrived. They also had allegedly called someone to come pick up the carcasses. The witness claimed that initially there were more than six springbok.

Police Commissioner Samuel !Hoebed confirmed that when police arrived at the accident scene at around 9.30pm, they found five dead springboks in the back of a government pick-up truck.

However, after clarifying with the Henties Bay police, the Commissioner explained that the MET warden had confiscated the carcasses from a farm outside Uis and was en route to Swakopmund when the accident occurred.

“The warden was assisting a farmer and upon her arrival to the farm, she noticed the farmer had springbok carcasses but didn’t have a permit to hunt them,” he laid out.

The Commissioner further stated that the warden was on unofficial business when she discovered the springboks and did her duty accordingly.

The Commissioner insisted that she relayed this story to the police officers that arrived on the scene, and also called the chief warden after the accident to assist her with the carcasses.

When confronted with these questions, Woolworths said that they have also addressed those claims.

“Our investigation also implicated two store managers who are now dismissed,” Woolworths South Africa Management responded.

Even though customers suffered initial losses, the Woolworths team put in their best efforts forward to rectify the matter.

“We have compensated customers who were affected by the actions of these store employees. We sincerely regret these incidents and apologise to the customers affected.

"We have taken the necessary steps to safeguard customers from similar incidents in future.”

Coastal Girls Popular in Europe’s Fashion Industry

Several coastal girls have recently returned from an overseas modelling trip, each having been signed up by an Italian modelling agency. LC’s Models Agency organised the trip to give local girls a shot at the international fashion industry.

The Namib Independent had a chat with LC’S Models Agency owner, Lizelle Waldeck Cordier, as well as model Anique van Vuuren about their experience in the fashion industry overseas.

“Our girls [Namibian] prove to be very popular and in demand overseas. All the girls I took with me signed with modelling agencies in Italy,” Lizelle said.

Asking Lizelle what she thinks makes our local ladies so popular in the European fashion world, she said that their unique look is what gets them noticed.

“Namibian girls have a different type of look to the European girls. They have a unique facial bone structure and build ..., which makes them stand out.

"I have also noticed a shift in the type of models they are looking for. They are reaching out more to other parts of the world, to get a different look,” she explained.

Lizelle started her modelling career at the tender age of 15. That same year she left Namibia to pursue a career in the fashion industry overseas, and soon tasted success.

In 2001, Lizelle was chosen as Bologna’s Top Model of The Year, which ensured her a good career as a model.

“By 2007 I returned back to Namibia, after a successful career in the European fashion industry, and started my own model agency. The aim with starting this agency was to offer girls the same opportunities I had many years ago.

“Through my modelling agency I can give Namibian and coastal girls the exposure they need to pursue a career in the industry,” she described.

Lizelle brings many overseas clients to Namibia to see what talent we have here, as well as taking girls there. So far they have had many success. Currently, Lizelle runs modelling courses in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund for both male and female, and will soon expand her services to Windhoek.

18-year-old Anique from Swakopmund returned back to Namibia last week Friday, after she had a great run in Italy.

“I was also signed on with a modelling agency in Rome. This experience has been wonderful. I have learned so much,” Anique told the Namib Independent. She said that they did several different courses, as well as photo-shoots.

“It was tiring at times, but so worth it.

I can definitely see a career for myself in the fashion industry. Ramp modelling is my favourite, but I am just too short,” she said. Through this experience, Anique said also got to peek behind the scenes of the fashion industry.

“I was surprised to find that what I saw and experienced was exactly as it is portrayed on [the DSTV program] Fashion TV,” she shared. She also took part in Miss Teen Namibia, and does modelling locally.

Other girls from the coast who got signed with modelling agencies in Italy are, Lika Blaauw, 19, from Walvis Bay and Sharny Engelbrecht, 15, from Swakopmund. Sharny won the ‘New Model Today’ competition held on the coast, and got the opportunity to also compete in The International ‘New Model Today’ Competition in Italy. She ended up 13th out of 50 models.

Mayors Ball Disaster - Or Was It?

An unexpected turn of events at the Mayors Ball turned into a memorable story for the foreign delegates attending. During one of the speeches, the weather turned bad and drenched Swakopmund’s Mayor from head to toe.

The Mayors Ball, hosted on the historic Heritage Hill at the Castle restaurant, staged an entertaining reception and was attended by several Mayors from South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland, as well as the Swakopmund and Walvis Bay Mayors and Councillors. The Erongo Regional Governor was also present. This event coincided with the recently hosted inter-municipal games in Swakopmund.

Namport and Erongo Red took this opportunity to showcase their outreach and cooperation within the Erongo region. Swakopmund Mayor Juuso Kambueshe, who hosted the prestige event, spoke with delight of the recently hosted SAIMSA games in Swakopmund.

“I don’t see the games as sport, but rather as a seed that is planted into Swakopmund,” he said. He further outlined the importance of tourism, saying that it is the future of Swakopmund that needs investment and infrastructure, and that the SAIMSA games contributed greatly to the community.

“On behalf of the Municipality and all its people; Muslims, Protestants, Christians - all the people, we thank you,” the Mayor concluded.

However, halfway through the Erogo Governor’s speech, the weather took a turn for the worse and the poorly constructed tent began to disintegrate in the heavy wind and rain.

The ever hands-on, unorthodox Mayor Kambueshe was quick to assist the struggling waiters as the tent whirled back and forth, knocking down the people trying to restrain it and almost causing a fire.

Unfortunately, the Mayor was stopped in his tracks as a pile of water bounced off the tent ceiling and drenched him from head to toe, much to the shock of the on-looking politicians, forcing him to leave the event early.

It became obviously dangerous as the rest fought off the storm while the audience cramped into the tiny restaurant lobby and

continued with the program.

After a quick change, the Mayor returned with a big smile on his face to wrap up the ceremony.

He pointed out that

it was a good thing that this had happened, since the event will definitely be remembered by all who attended it, and noted that although precautionary steps were taken, no one

anticipated rain at the coastal town.

One thing is for sure, this was one of the most exciting gala events to have taken place in Swakopmund.

The Future RoadA new road has been rolled out and is under construction next to the B2 between Walvis Bay and Longbeach.

According to the Public Relations Manager of the Walvis Bay Municipality, Kevin Adams, this is to be a temporary road constructed to facilitate the development of the new Kuisebmond Extensions 5 and 6.

Adams said that this road would make it easier for heavy duty construction vehicles to move and develop the area.

Walvis Bay Mayor, Councillor Uilika Nambahu, is appealing to residents to allow Grade 12 students a conducive learning environment by giving them time, space and tranquillity as they prepare to write their final examinations.

“We therefore appeal to our community to support them by making sure that disturbances are kept at bay, such as noise generated by shebeens,” the Mayor said.

“Unpleasant incidents should be reported to the police to be dealt with immediately. The same goes for violent episodes fuelled by drug and

alcohol abuse, whether they take place publicly or behind closed doors.

If the perpetrators are not confronted and brought to book, they will continue to torment their victims, who are predominantly women and children,” Councillor Nambahu pleaded.

She said Government’s initiatives to advance gender equality can be achieved if parents teach boys and girls to respect one another.

Nambahu stressed how critical it is to offer equal opportunities for education to both boys and girls.

The Walvis Bay Municipality remains focused on its commitment towards

the growth and development of the town and the wellbeing of its residents, stated Nambuahu, adding that the interest from investors keeps rising.

She then commended the municipal team for bagging medals in the just ended Southern Africa Inter-Municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA) games that took place in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.

This past weekend a father allegedly shot and killed his young son after a house party at his residence.

The accused, Thomas David (46), and his wife were hosting a house party in John Moyo Street, when the terrible incident cost the life of their 8-year-old son at 2.30am on Saturday morning.

According to Crime Investigations Co-ordinator of the Erongo Region, Inspector Erastus Iikuyu from Nampol, the accused was drunk and entered his bedroom to clean and store away his 9mm pistol. Shortly thereafter his wife and a few partygoers, who were outside, heard a shot. They went to investigate what had happened and found the boy,

who had been sleeping in his parents’ bed at the time, with a gunshot wound through his chest.

“We do not know whether the firearm was on safety mode,” Iikuyu said.

“At the moment the case is still under investigation as to whether the firearm went off accidentally or intentionally.”

As per the state outline, Thomas David had his first appearance in court on Monday and was denied bail. He pleaded not guilty but the court charged him on the count of murder, where the accused did unlawfully and intentionally kill his son by shooting him in the chest.

The accused still remains in custody. The case is postponed until 5 November for further investigation.

Walvis Oktoberfest Presents Oompah Band


This Saturday the annual Oktoberfest will kick off at 10 am at the Atlantis Sports Club with exciting activities and a festive vibe for the whole family.

Walvis Bay better get ready for the fourth annual Oktoberfest. The event promises to exceed expectations and offer much more than its predecessors. In an interview with Chairperson Manfred Dedekind and Committee Member Harald Jenkins, the Namib Independent found out what is in store for the Oktoberfest goers this year.

“We will be having lots of fun games for children and adults. We are putting up a jumping castle and hydro ball for the children as well as many other games with various prizes for them to win.

“The purpose of this festival is for families to come and really enjoy themselves,” Harald said.

“One of the new games, called the prize shower, consists of a cube with many paper strips where one blows into and then has ten seconds to snatch a piece of paper where a prize amount could be written on,” Harald explained. For the adults there will be all the traditional Oktoberfest games like hand sawing plus many others.

According to the festival’s organisers, delicious traditional German cuisine will be served, prepared and sponsored by Andrea Bertelmann from His House. There will also be mouth-watering ice cream available in six flavours. Another speciality of the Oktoberfest is the Festbräu, a specific beer that is only brewed for this occasion. According to Harald, this beer has a different taste and is a little bit darker in colour. They have received 1000 litres of Festbräu for the Oktoberfest, available only as draft.

One of the highlights of the

Oktoberfest is the big Bonanza Draw at 2pm. Those who have bought tickets have the chance to win N$10,000, N$5,000 or N$1,000 for first, second and third price, respectively. In addition there are various other sponsored prizes as well. A ticket to the Bonanza Draw costs N$100. In addition to the Bonanza Draw, half-Oryx carcasses will be auctioned off at 4.30pm.

According to Manfred this year’s Oktoberfest will have a live Oompah Band, the Hofbräuhaus - specially flown in from Johannesburg, to play excellent music from 2pm to create a cheery atmosphere. In addition, Gert Meyer and Hartmut Fölscher from Get2 will also be playing music. As the evening starts the music will take on a more upbeat rhythm, creating opportunity for dancing.

Harald stated that quite a few of those planning to attend the Octoberfest will be dressed in the traditional Lederhosen with suspenders and checked shirts for men and Dirndl dresses for the women.

The Oktoberfest could not have been possible without its sponsors. To the Editor,

I have been thinking about the Flamingos and all the comments.

I walk along the Lagoon fairly regularly. In my walks I have noticed that it is about 98% Greater Flamingos that are dying. I have also noticed a number of disorientated and fearless Greater Flamingos as well as dead birds that do not appear to have been killed or eaten by anything, including seagulls.

One Greater Flamingo even walked right up to me, on the side-walk, and then turned down into the lagoon. That is most unusual.

If it was jackals and or dogs killing the birds, they would not discriminate between the Greater and Lesser Flamingos. It cannot

be plastic or other pollution because both species are filter feeders. It cannot be heavy metal pollution because that would kill both species, and other animals, indiscriminately.

This leaves me with food. The Greater Flamingos poddle. One no longer sees Flamingos etched on the skyline on the far side of the Lagoon where they also used to feed. The far side of the Lagoon has been inundated (polluted) with an alien plant called sea asparagus. Could the sea asparagus not be taking over the feeding grounds of the Greater Flamingo by preventing them from poddling? This would cause starvation and many deaths, as seen on one of my walks, when I saw approximately 40 dead

Greater Flamingos. I do not think this plant growth would affect the Lesser Flamingo because they feed differently.

Is there someone who can look into this and if it is the cause, what will be done about it, this is after all a RAMSAR site and a wetland of major importance.

Another question. On the same walk when I saw the large number of dead flamingos I also approximately the same number of box jelly fish. In all my years in Walvis Bay I have only ever seen three in the past. Is there an explanation or will it just be put down to global warming?

New FNB ATMs Already on the Coast

FNB has started replacing the old ATM machines all over the coast with this new fresh look, which not only looks much better but also provide a more efficient service. The nationwide initiative already had a noticeable effect on the coast.

Brandon Brock, Manager: FNB ATM has advised that the bank is busy replacing all old model ATMs with completely new ATMs, as opposed to upgrading them.

At the same time FNB Namibia is also upgrading the look and feel of the ATM sites with a modern and fresh design. This forms part of FNB Namibia’s strategy and promise to investing in offering Namibians world class banking solutions and to offer its clients the latest in self-service banking solutions in order to give greater access to safe, affordable and convenient channels.

On 27 September 2013, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Isak Katali, announced that the price of Petrol in October will remain unchanged. However, the price of Diesel, regular and low sulfur, will increase by 45 cents per liter.

Katali explained that during the first days of September, the global oil market was mostly characterised by the possibility of military action in Syria, which could have disrupted the Middle East's oil supply routes and would have pushed prices up.

While this action has been pushed aside for now, oil prices still remain high because of speculators making profits.

Particularly the price of Diesel has not come down. Coupled to a weak

South African Rand, to which the Namibian Dollar is fixed, this led to a massive under-recovery in the price of Diesel during September.

While all of this is very true, does it not make sense to rather increase the price of petrol instead? Now a lot of readers are going to be up in arms about that statement.

However, consider this…Our world operates primarily on

Diesel. When you go to your local supermarket to do your shopping, the goods that you are buying were delivered to the shop by truck. Trucks use Diesel.

What will happen by the end of October? Prices will once again increase throughout the shop with transporters and suppliers blaming the Diesel price increase. This is the direct increase that you feel

immediately.September and October are

important times of the year for us in the Southern Hemisphere. It marks the beginning of spring. This means that farmers and producers are busy getting everything ready for the new season.

Surprise, surprise. Generally speaking, farm equipment; tractors, trucks, seeders, plows, harvesters and so on, run on Diesel. An increase in the price of Diesel at this time of the year means that the input costs for farmers and producers are higher. In the long run that means that prices in the shops will increase during the next six months because of this increase in cost price. This is a secondary increase that you may not feel immediately.

Meat producers will also pass

on this price increase, as the price of getting fodder to the animals increases. So does the price to get livestock to the abattoirs.

It also becomes more expensive to produce seeds, seeds that chickens eat. Seeds, which also need to be transported to the chicken farms by truck. Trucks that run on Diesel.

The list of examples of how an increase in the price of Diesel increases end prices is almost limitless. It affects every single thing that you buy; building materials, cement, sand, bricks, steel, wood, furniture, electronic goods, stationery, booze, clothing, leisure goods, pet food, groceries, etc.

In Namibia we already have a massive problem with inflation – and let’s be honest, the official figure that is published by the government

simply does not cut it. So once again, because of the

increase in the price of Diesel, inflation is going to increase – or simply put, you will be purchasing less at the end of next month with the same amount of money as what you did this month.

Would it not have made sense to leave the price of Diesel ‘as is’ and increase the price of petrol, thereby using the price of Petrol to subsidise the price of Diesel?

Yes, you would pay more to fill your car… But, and it’s a big BUT, not every single price in the supermarket would go up.

At the end of the day, it would have a much smaller effect on your pocket than what this latest price increase will have.

Learner AffairsSince the start of our duty, we were

busy with the new Grade Eights. We began with a Grade Seven day where the Grade Sevens were introduced to the school. The new Grade Eights had a “Guppie” concert and dance during their orientation period.

Throughout the year we were responsible for all the new learners in our school and the anti-bullying campaign. We also ran a Big Brother / Big Sister program, where children were assigned to older learners that are positive role models. All birthdays were announced by us every Monday morning during assembly.

Community AffairsThe prefects of WBPHS organised

a Christmas charity project with the help of our learners. During

the 2012 December school holiday we delivered 207 gifts to many charitable institutions, such as the old age homes in Walvis Bay (Huis Palms, and Kuisebmond Old Age Home), the Walvis Bay Prison and the state hospital. It was a great experience, and absolute pleasure seeing the faces of joy!

Our school also took part in the Bear a Blanket Project by the Jonathan Jacobs Organisation, along with other competing schools in Walvis Bay. We collected over 80 blankets from the learners of our school! It was a huge success as our school won the competition for donating the most blankets towards charity.

On 12 June the prefects had a pizza day at the Jonah Home. Thereafter we decided to celebrate each child’s birthday at the Jonah home. We would have a group of prefects take gifts and cupcakes through to the children whenever there was a birthday. The Jonah Home Birthday Project is done throughout the year and was handed over to the new prefects of WBPHS 2014 to continue with. Having spent so much time at the Jonah Home, it was truly an honour and a heart-warming experience being with the children.

Namibia First in Global Road Accident Deaths


Research published by the World Health Rankings on worldlifeexpectancy.com shows that Namibia has a rate of 53.4 road accident deaths per 100,000 people.

The latest MVA road accident statistics support this research. From the beginning of the year until 30 September, Namibia has had 2575 car crashes with 459 fatalities.

Although so far there were 75 less accidents than last year, the statistics show that this year had 89 more injuries and 56 more deaths. These figures raise great concern, taking into consideration that the festive season still lies ahead.

The Executive Secretary of the Namibia Road Safety Council, Eugene Tendekule, in earlier media reports stated that our rate of “accidents per year [is] extremely high given the country’s level of motorisation.”

He explained that as per January 2013 statistics there are about 280 000 vehicles and 203 000 licensed drivers in Namibia.

Although countries such as the UK, Sweden and Australia are highly populated, they are also high up on the road safety performance index. Statistics show that their Road Accident Deaths are down to a single digit.

“Since 2002 we have been recording an excess of 50 crashes per 1000 vehicles. The point comes out clearly that almost every vehicle is causing an accident in Namibia,” stated Tendekule.

The West Coast Safety Initiative (WCSI) is of the opinion that we are just reaping what we have sown. According to them, bad driving habits

are just being passed down from generation to generation.

“As an example, children see their parents not stopping at stop streets and get taught to not stop at stop streets,” a WCSI spokesperson said.

The WCSI maintains that it is not a case of not knowing what the traffic laws are but a case of ignorance.

“When applying for a drivers licence, candidates are required to study traffic rules and regulations in order to pass the drivers licence test. Thus we all know what the law says. We do not need to be taught again. However, motorists play ignorant and have an ‘I do not care’ attitude.”

The WCSI spokesperson further pointed out that this attitude could also be because reckless drivers get away too easily.

“Overseas reckless drivers lose their licences or cars when caught. In Namibia, people drive like hell, get caught, pay a fine and continue their reckless driving behaviour. They do not have much more to lose.”

In the case of an accident, it is often the reckless that get away unharmed and the innocent who suffer, according to the WCSI. In addition, the WCSI representative said that motorists view speeding and breakneck driving behaviour as an achievement, something to brag about amongst friends. These friends in turn condone this behaviour by accepting it as the norm and not speaking out against it.

The WCSI hopes that this holiday season will be accident free.

“That is a very farfetched ideal,” the spokesperson admitted and added, “Many die on the road every year. So, every time someone travels on the B2 they have to ask who its next victim will be. Will it be you?”

The Strongest Man and Strongest Woman competition were hosted at the Wal-Vis-Fees this year, entertaining spectators with a spectacular display of muscle power.

This was the second time the competition took place at the Wal-Vis-Fees, but the first time that ladies also took part. Andre du Preez, Namibia’s own strong man who organised the event, said:

“The purpose of this competition is to get people involved who are currently training.” According to him, the heavy and specific exercise routine is very hard, requires a lot of devotion and a specific diet.

Wal-Vis-Fees Boasts Sheer Muscle Power

A nation-wide two-year study that aims to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of emergency medical services in Namibia is underway. Potentials of development and measures to improve and strengthen the used system is are sought.

Andreas Iskam, a German student and PhD hopeful, who is in charge of the research, says that there are a number of challenges that emergency services have to cope with, mainly because of the large population distribution in Namibia.

“2.1 million Citizens live on 824km in Namibia. This means

there are about 2.5 citizens per square kilometre,” Iskam laid out.

The Namib Independent recently reported that 45 minutes is considered a good response time for emergency vehicles at the coast.

Hence, the “golden hour” within which most ambulances aim to assist the victims is often impossible to reach. Local emergency services also complain of lack of cooperation between various services.

The study, which at the moment focuses on an internet survey but aims to conduct further mapping, interviews and field work, looks at various variables, including response

time, customer preferences and customer satisfaction. This much needed study comes amid reports from the World Life Expectancy website, which ranks Namibia as the country with the most road accident fatalities in the world.

The questions of the online survey include previous experiences and aims at finding solutions for the often understaffed emergency response units.

The independent study also compares private, MVA fund and state owned ambulances to determine which are most preferred by Namibians and which performes best.

News

contestants from all over the country were divided into three categories, namely seniors, juniors and ladies. These comprised ten seniors, five ladies and five juniors.

Wynand Theron from Muscle Works explained that there were four challenges, which were the Truck Pull, the Tire Flop, the Log Lift and the Weight Stack challenge. Of these the Truck

Pull and Weight Lift seemed to be the most challenging for the day.

According to Andre he will host this competition at the coast again at the next opportunity provided that there are enough sponsors. This year’s sponsors were Muscle Works Namibia, Wills Gym, Sign World, Naukluft Water and Monster Energy.

Emergency Medical Services Study Kicks Off

The Rugby Championship 28 September:

South Africa 28-8 Australia. I believe that the Springboks should have been more desperate in their quest for a bonus point against the Wallabies. It would be important to consolidate upon the last win over the Aussies and that would be the main goal.

The Aussies had no answers for the front pack of the Boks and the loose forwards of the Springboks totally dominated the game. Flip van der Merwe, however went into a tackle with a leading elbow and I would like to ask him where in the Coach's manual he saw that it should be done like that.

It is ill-discipline like that that would end their game against the All Blacks again and this time there would have been no excuses. The Springboks have the best backline in years and it showed against a very lack-lustre Aussie backline.

One can easily argue that it is not the Aussie backs that are poor but just a magnificent Springbok backline that has no obvious weak points and I believe it to be the latter.

Willie le Roux and Zane Kirchner look like they have played in the Springbok-squad forever. I believe Zane can improve even more on his running game simply because he has tremendous talent that has yet to be unearthed.

Next it is the All Blacks and although I firmly believe that the Springboks can beat them, they would desperately want to keep mistakes to a minimum and discipline would also be paramount. The Springboks will have to score four tries and prevent the All Blacks from scoring a bonus point in order to take the title.

Ellis Park has been a happy hunting ground for them and they won eight of eleven here. In the last two tests against the All Blacks they also scored eleven tries. It can be done and Meyer has already said that they will not hold back and will go for the four tries and that the players must just believe that they can do it.

Yours truly agrees and would further like to add that if they just put the ball behind the All Blacks and put them under relentless pressure the whole of the game, they

can indeed be beaten. Their mind must be set on four tries and the win and must not again say, "Yeah, we had a goal to first beat them and if we can do it with a bonus point that would be nice."

The supporters want the title and nothing else. Beating them with four tries without the All Blacks securing a bonus point in the process will be a big task though.

It will also be a worrying factor that the Springboks again were on the receiving end of two yellow cards and probably would have secured a bonus point if not for boyish stupid ness.

Points for the Springboks: Tries from Strauss, Kirchner and le Roux. Conversions: (2) Steyn and penalties (2) from Steyn. Australia: Try from Chris Feauai-Sautia and one penalty from Lealifano.

Argentina 15-33 All Blacks. Points for Argentina: (4) penalties Sanhez and (1) Bosch. All Blacks: Tries- Savea,Sam Cane and Smith (2). Penalties (3) Cruden (1) conversion and (1) conversion Barrett.

The Mighty All Blacks got the four tries that they came for and even though it was a bit harder, the scoreboard speaks for itself .

Dorcas MhunguFrom 5 to 12 October, the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sports and Culture is promoting the importance of sports among youth by hosting a fun-packed sports week. Events will take place at various municipal stadia and facilities in Walvis Bay.

Regional Sports Officer in the Ministry (Walvis Bay), Mara Kandjiriomuini, said the Minister, Jerry Ekandjo, will officiate at the opening ceremony on 5 October and will be accompanied by the Acting Permanent Secretary, Dr Vetumbwavi Veii.

“All sporting codes recorded by the ministry, like swimming, soccer, table

tennis, tennis, chase dominoes, volley ball, basketball and the special Olympics will be featured in the week-long activities,” Kandjiriomuini laid out.

She added that the official opening will take place on the 5th at Jan Wilken Stadium. On this day there will also be an exhibition of the various sport codes in Walvis Bay, and the sporting activities will run from 2pm until 9pm. A full program of the lined up events will be made available at the opening ceremony, Kandjiriomuino said.

The closing ceremony will honour winners and wrap up with a boxing tournament featuring Walvis Bay boxers from junior and senior local teams.

Dorcas MhunguHarry Simon’s latest victory over Geard Ajetovic of Serbia has had him showered with praises from his ecstatic fans, with one even describing him as “the hurricane” on Simon’s Facebook page.

The “Terminator”, as he is popularly known, punched his way to victory using only one hand after the other got injured in the first round. He lived up to his promise by winning the much publicised fight in Windhoek last Saturday night. The scores were 117-111 twice and 116-113 all in favour of Simon.

In a message that Simon posted

on his Facebook page a few hours before the fight, he predicted his victory.

“Geard Ajetovic will have to receive so much more punishment whilst going down tonight at Ramatex, Windhoek. Age is experience. He'll have to go on holiday to overcome my upper cuts, hooks and straight punches. See you all and thanks for the support,” the Terminator bragged.
