Of all the things Governor C. Mutjavikua was adamant about in his midyear term

report, the duty of improving sanitary conditions in the Erongo region was certainly of the highest priority. The story of sanitation in

some of the busiest towns in the region is often a sad one, as municipalities seem unprepared and incapable of providing the

most fundamental of human rights in one of Namibia’s wealthiest regions.

only one-third of the population in Namibia has access to improved sanitation, and it would be erroneous to think that these statistics do not apply to our region; looking at a number of erongo towns paints a depressing picture altogether.

the state of karibib sewage is in dire need of rehabilitation and repair. upon visiting the town, it was discovered that the pipelines leading up to the sewage pond, a significant distance from town, are overwhelmed by leakages, which cause ponds and even streams that seem to have been ignored for months. the sewage pond machinery is clearly broken, the fence surrounding it is no more, and the environment is contaminated by toilet waste in every direction. Usakos to Host Heritage Festival, Open New Museum

Lavrenty Repin

The Municipality of Usakos is working hard to uplift the image of the town ever since it was downgraded to a town council. According to Council member Axel Mwafangeyo the downgrade means that Usakos residents are unable to receive loans from banks when in market for property, and that investment into the town has diminished greatly.

with this in mind, the town council is planning to host a “first of a kind” Heritage Festival on 24 and 25 october, which they plan to make an annual event.

“Something to attract tourists,” Mr Mwafangeyo explained, saying that the town did not want to “copy-paste” trade fairs and expos like other towns, and instead opted for a relevant festival.

“the municipality building is over a 100 years old,” Mr Mwafangeyo pointed out, “and most of the building in the street are from the early 1900s.”

the municipality building will become a

museum once the offices have moved. “we will bring in the locomotive, we

have unique antique fire-fighting trucks and transNamib has artefacts to donate as well,” the young Councillor explained.

“During the heritage festival we shall have a platform where the elderly

can share their history, we have unique biltong which will bring back the flavour of the town and we want to promote investment opportunities in Usakos,” Mr mwafangeyo detailed, saying the town will throw a clean-up procedure before the festival.

thing of the past,” since his council managed to replace pipes, build new substations and purchase new pressure pumps. Yet, despite all this success, mr mwafangeyo admitted that the informal settlements, which make up the bulk of usakos’ 8000 residents, have no facilities to speak of.

“our two informal settlements are not connected, there are no services. Pit-toilets are no more operating. People ‘settle’ everywhere,” he explained.

the swakopmund municipality said that their sewage reticulation is “in generally acceptable condition and functioning well when used as intended,” and blamed challenges on residents who introduce debris into the systems. Drc public pit-toilets suffer from overflow and clogging, as was witnessed during a visit to the area. central Drc maintains a number of (semi-)working toilets, distributed sporadically. however, some residents have resolved to building their own facilities as shortage and blockage are widespread. in outer parts of the ever-growing Drc, toilets are absent, and the make-shift facilities spill out on the street. the municipality said that although “Drc installation of sewer reticulation is being considered, a time frame cannot be given as this is still dependent on other factors.”

mondesa, a formal settlement, has reportedly suffered numerous blockages and drainages this past year with open sewage running on to town streets. the municipality stated that there is an “on-going project to replace the mid-block sewers in some parts of mondesa,

as well as a few minors, such as in Vineta.”

Public toilets in the town’s tourist area, near the amphitheatre and opposite the jetty, are in an appalling condition while toilets on the woolworth parking lot have not been replaced since their needless removal. council yearly affords money for sewer replacements, according to the municiaplity, which is over 120 years old.

examples are numerous in all towns region-wide. The open fields in walvis bay, like the one opposite the railway line that divides kuisebmond and the industrial Area, are littered with excrement while an engineer that works on power substations in walvis bay reviled how the small bunkers situated in low-income areas are used by residents as lavatories. this should not be blamed only on citizens with “unhygienic habits”; lack of availability of facilities is a clear issue.

kevin Adams, communication Officer for Walvis Bay, said that “despite council’s best efforts to prevent it, more and more blockages have been occurring in kuisebmond over the past few years.”

mr Adams explained that “the owner is responsible for maintaining the sewer system on his/her erf, including the manholes.” He further laid out that actions like using manholes as refuse dumping points, leaving manholes without a cover and exceeding their original capacity lead to blockages in the harbour town. “All of these actions are illegal and can lead to the outbreak of very serious illnesses,” Mr Adams warned.

Although there is an educational barrier, as well as financial strain, the region is in dire need of an overhaul of its sanitation system, as the governor pointed out: “No leader may rest until the people have adequate sanitation services.”

Alien Producer to Shoot Movie on the Coast?

Ridley Scott (centre) with local company Expedite Aviation Crew who flew him around on scenic flights in the

of this week and has spent time in a number of locations in the erongo region.

in a recent interview with empire, scott highlighted, “i have already got the next two films ready to go,” with Exodus in 2014 and “this science-fiction thing” in 2015. According to the screen rant leading hollywood website, speculation is rife that the 2015 contenders may be either of three sci-fi projects - the Prometheus sequel, the blade runner sequel and the adaptation of the forever war – all of which have entered the writing stage of development this past year. each lend themselves perfectly to the Namib as a backdrop.

coastal residents and businesses have recently enjoyed the attention from hollywood as more and more directors are discovering that the combination of other-worldly landscapes, first world facilities and fantastic exchange rates make Namibia in general and the coastal region in specific a very attractive film

location destination.

Who is Ridley Scott? success seems to follow english director ridley scott wherever his magic touch leads him, whether it is in alien worlds, roman-gladiator times or even on the Namibian desert. so it seems at least, because if speculations that ridley scott is to shoot in Namibia are true, that means he will be bringing along seasoned actors, a gripping screen-play and, naturally, millions of dollars.

His largest grossing film gladiator, with the help of russel crowe’s genius, grossed over US$450 million worldwide. his other notable works include the renowned ‘Alien’ trilogy, the nail-biting psychological thriller ‘hannibal’, the ground-breaking sci-fi film ‘Prometheus’ and most recently raunchy, entertaining ‘the councillor’, with cameron Diaz like you have never seen her before. if anything, ridley scott has an ability to bring out

psychological paradoxes in the characters he puppeteers; be it hannibal’s relentless psychopath or michael fassbender’s emotionless but inquisitive Artificial intelligence. the director does not hold back on when it comes to visual effects and in his lengthy career, 76-year-old scott has won, among others, two emmy awards and a cannes award. in 2011 he received a star on the hollywood walk of fame.

New Karibib Residents Association Faces Uphill Battle

Trucks Forced to Park Illegally

Lavrenty Repin

The Karibib Residents Association (KRA) is the first of its kind for the small mining town, but with a fresh and open approach the organisation is set on a path which may lead the town into new prosperity. Unlike many other residential associations, KRA has made it its mission to represent all residents of the town.

founding member Armand braeutigam explained that the “completely local” association is about “taking possession, feeling responsible and deciding that this is my home town and saying that i don’t want to wait for things to get worse.”

on their committee, there is an array of nationalities (german, Damara, herero, oshiwambo), income-classes and professions.

“we’ve got mine workers, a petrol jockey, a housewife, stone engineer/sculptor and a mining and water engineer. the idea is to get people that have knowledge together, bring in experience that we have at hand, that is in karibib. there is no need to go far, we just have to activate the people, for the sake of the community,” Armand said.

the non-party political, non-profit, voluntary service

organisation has gained over 300 signatures by people that they plan to represent, and hopes to have a councillor representing the organisation elected in the town council by next year’s elections.

“if we have someone there, we still want him to report back, to the committee and the public, and be willing to share part of his salary with the organisation to keep it running,” laid out Armand, citing lack of communication between local authority and public as a problem they want to address. Public meetings are apparently very difficult to attend, with dates unpredictably changing. eventually, krA plans to “have a communication flow, for different groups, cultural, youth and elderly, which just doesn’t exist at the moment.”

karibib faces an avalanche of problems, Armand explained, including infrastructure problems like poor sanitation facilities and road maintenance. the main road is a danger spot with many accidents occurring on the busy, yet purposefully narrow, stretch. there is a lack of parking spaces and no parking for trucks, while pavement curbs are abnormally high. “there are a couple of wheelchair users here who can’t get from one side of the town to the other without assistance, because of the large

curbs,” Armand pointed out, “and there's no walkway for school children walking from town to school and back, so they walk on the roads.”

other problem is the little to no preparation for floods (like the one at the beginning of this year). the drain pipe is blocked because it runs under a railway line and a bureaucratic dispute has delayed a simple clean-up. more mineworkers and defence air force employees mean a population growth is expected. Armand said, “the new ceo, who is trying very hard to get everything sorted out, is confronted with a backlash of ten to 15 years.”

widespread cattle theft and poaching on nearby farms are on the rise, yet the police force grew, according to Armand, from five in 1989 to over 30 today.

but the organisation also aims for projects that may help the community down the line. Armand suggests garden projects “similar to those in Europe and Russia”, where residents can rent or buy small plots near the city borders. Armand explained, “They may be about 40 to 50 square metres. You could spend your weekends there, get your supplies of fresh vegetables and fruits. it would cut down on imports, bring down the cost of food and make vegetables available for the lower-income class.”

Cricketers to Take Over Walvis Bay

Siglinde de Villiers

This week Sunday, the 18th Annual Coastal Junior Cricket Festival will kick off in Walvis Bay, anticipated by young athletes, their parents and the organisers of the event. This year, the games will be played on the fields of Sparta Club, Jan Wilken Stadium, Atlantis Club, and by Walvis Bay high and primary schools until next week Friday.

this year’s cricket festival is being sponsored by the walvis bay salt Refiners who at the same time are also celebrating their 50th anniversary.

“we feel honoured to be involved in the development of young talent,” said Andre snyman, managing Director of walvis bay salt holdings.

each year, the tournament is a special event and presents unique opportunities for every player. many players who participated in this tournament in the past have progressed through the ranks and

later represented Namibia at senior national level. this year, the eleven members of the Namibian cricket squad who participated in the 2014 icc u19 cricket world cup in Dubai played at this very festival in 2007 and 2008.

the prestigious cricket festival had its origin in 1997 and since then its main focus was on cricket development and the promotion of the game. it allows its player to develop their skills and love for cricket.

“there is a lot of work involved in preparing the grounds. coaches and managers have even curtailed their holidays for this event,” said John heynes, organiser of the event.

the organisers look forward to this year’s cricket festival and are certain that the new junior faces will make the most of this opportunity and enjoy the fun. they also hope this festival will give special memories to all those u13 players in action.

Photographs of anxious looking men burning rubber off copper cables emerged this week. A concerned business owner in the Walvis Bay industrial area informed the paper of the suspicious activity taking place right under the community’s nose.

the paper decided to take a closer look at the alleged copper cable theft and visited the notorious site, where suspicious looking individuals burn rubber cables on a regular basis. the unoccupied piece of private property was strewn with rubbish, human waste and empty, burnt and cut rubber cables. According to an electrical engineer, Pieter burger, the cables found all over the property are stranded and trailing cables.

“the stranded cables are the valuable ones, one can get quite a bit of copper from these,” he explained. both erongo red and telecom Namibia, who fall victim to these kinds of thieves almost on a weekly basis, informed the paper, after closer investigation, that it was not their cables found on the plot or seen being burnt in the photographs.

the last incident erongo red had was when a couple from henties bay stole the company’s copper cables from a power substation outside town a few weeks back.

“what the people do not realise is that the N$20 000 they make with the stolen copper will cost erongo red or other companies almost ten times that amount to replace and repair,” Burger explained, who has worked on these cases many times before. he also recalled an incident where they experienced a power outage and when they visited the site where the fault was, they found the person, who tried to cut the cables, electrocuted to death.

benjamin Nangombe, Public relations for erongo red, stated: “it is a very dangerous activity these criminals take on.” He also urged the community to inform the authorities or erongo red themselves if they are aware of this kind of criminal activity.

“we do offer rewards to people whose tips lead to arrest or prosecution,” Nangombe said.

A business owner in the area said that they are sick and tired of the breeding ground for criminal activities and wish the owner of the plot would come and clean up the place and develop it.

“the smell from the burning rubber is such a nuisance and give us the worst headaches. every time one of us suffers a headache, we can be sure to find a suspect burning rubber on the plot,” the business owner shared with the paper. According

Copper Thieves Caught in the Act

to a scrap dealer in walvis bay, depending on the fluctuating value for copper, one can get anything between N$40 and N$57 per kilogram of copper.

Asked whether they question suspicious looking persons with loads of copper, they replied that it is difficult because contractors often have left over cable they sell to them, so one cannot assume bulk copper sellers to be criminals. however, they do sometimes ask suspicious persons to get a ‘cleared’ certificate or letter from the police, saying that the copper cables do not appear to be stolen copper, the scrap dealer stated.

Detective inspector mwatongwe told the paper that it is quite difficult to catch these criminals, but promised to investigate the persons and the plot in question, as pointed out in the photographs. the cables on the plot and in the photo are thought to be stolen from private persons, contractors or factories since they do not

belong to either erongo red or telecom.

in a press statement, telecom Namibia stressed their concern over the ever increasing incidents of cable theft in the country, but also the erongo region in particular.

“telecom Namibia has noted with concern the growing incidents of cable theft from, and vandalism of, the network infrastructure all over the country, which cause interruptions in the provision of telecommunications services to the general public,” stated the Public relations and communications department.

over 20 incidents of criminals targeting telecom Namibia’s underground and aerial cables were recorded this year in places such as windhoek, omaruru, usakos, karibib, oshakati, otjiwarongo and keetmashoop. In two separate incidents in July this year, criminals cut down and carried away 15 poles carrying the aerial fibre optic cable which forms part of the western fibre backbone Network. this happened near the village of omatjete, about 60km west of omaruru in the erongo region. in the process, the fibre cable was also vandalised. earlier in may this year five telephone poles were cut and removed between omatjete and the uis river.

telecom Namibia offers cash rewards of up to N$20 000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of any person or persons responsible for committing crimes of vandalism or theft on the telecom Namibia network.

Neighbours’ Consent for Building Project No Longer Required

Siglinde de Villiers

It is commonly understood amongst Walvis Bay residents that if your neighbor’s construction project exceeds a three-metre boundary line, or is higher than two storeys, the neighbor needs to get the consent of those living adjacent to his property. However, a recent case has brought to light that the Municipality views this practice more as a form of courtesy than a rule, raising more questions than answers.

once the plot in sam Nujoma street was sold to its new owner, he started to demolish the original house over christmas and shortly thereafter excavations for the new foundations began.

“they worked late into the night, sometimes up to 22h00,” one

of the neighbors told the Namib independent. they found it quite peculiar that the builder carried on with the building activities when he did not have the permission from the bordering neighbors.

before the new proposed building was to be erected on mentioned erf, permission was sought from both adjacent neighbors for the building lines to be encroached as well as the fact that the new building would be three storeys high. the residents on either side of the proposed building objected to the three-storey building.

“it will have a detrimental effect on the existing houses, blocking out natural light as well as invading our privacy. An independent architect testified to this fact,” one of the residents related.

Despite all this, the foundations for the three-storey house were

dug, exceeding the building lines, filled with cement and steel girders inserted. what had happened?

“we were told that the council of the municipality had overruled our objections,” one of the neighbors said. According to the municipality the “blocking out of sunlight and invasion of privacy are not valid reasons to object to a construction.” what would qualify as a valid reason then? the municipality spokesperson told the Namib independent that the only valid reason to be accepted is that of the present construction “endangering the neighbor’s property in some or other way.”

“one does not need to have a neighbor’s permission in order to build on your property. After all, it is your property. the three-metre requirement is only a municipal requirement for municipality

purposes such as easy access to the back of the house, it has nothing to do with permission from neighbors,” a representative of the municipality explained. “seeking the neighbour’s consent is thus more a form of courtesy than a requirement,” he added.

Yet, the very form that seeks consent from the neighbor’s is an official document available at the municipality office. What is more, the Municipality’s building regulations clearly and specifically say under point number 5 that “written consent and/or objection from all effected (sic) neighborus must be obtained.”

many locals who look at these opposite ends of the municipality’s regulatory spectrum remain confused.

“is this how the builder can carry on with operations without adhering to the rules and regulations, which apply to everyone else?” one resident asked. “Did

he buy his way into it?”According to a spokesperson from the

municipality, the fact that the municipality did not approve the objections presented by the neighbor’s does not mean that they could not lodge and appeal against the council by the ministry of regional and local government housing and rural Developments.

“to date, the engineering Department has told me that there have been no objections,” the spokesperson said.

“we decided to take our case to a lawyer,” one of the neighbors continued to explain. “Now the whole case lies with the ministry in windhoek to make a final decision. For the case to be taken further, each of us has to pay N$35 000, not something we pensioners can afford. in the meantime, it is very peculiar how the construction proceeds regardless of all the controversies surrounding it.”

The Nam-mic Petrol Card Hits the Coast

Tanya Calitz

Last week Nam-mic officially launched their new service by introducing their fleet and fuel card services, which can be used at various merchants across Erongo.

the fuel card will allow customers to transfer money from their bank accounts to the petrol card, and swipe at various service stations like engen convenience centre in walvis bay as well as a few participating shell and Puma service stations. co-owner of the convenience centre and engen in town, lillian theron, said she is very optimistic and happy about the new initiative introduced by Nam-mic.

“we have been looking for an alternative for a long time now,” stated theron, “and this is a great solution.”

most service stations do not accept debit or credit card payments due to the transaction cost attached to them, but the Nam-mic fuel card has no transaction cost for the fuel station owner, which enables them to accept Nam-mic card payments.

“this is a very convenient option for our customers and also permits people to travel with less cash. it is safer, and offers much better spending control in instances where employees fill up on business accounts,” Theron explained. “each time someone uses the card to fill up, an SMS gets sent to the card owner, ”detailed Josef Nitzborn, Merchants manager at Nam-mic.

Nitzborn said the registration process is very quick and easy. it is a 1, 2, 3-step process that consists of completing the application form at any participating merchant, depositing money into your Nam-mic account and then, swipe to pay. Nam-mic

also offers an option where you can use your Nam-mic card at participating stores, like Pick & Pay, chicken city, tn mobile and mtc.

Another advantage of owning a Nam-mic card is the fact that you earn

points each time you buy goods using your Nam-mic card.

Nitzborn stated, “the main benefit is probably the fact that you save a lot of money when it comes to transaction fees, because

each transaction you do on your Nam-mic card is significantly cheaper than using your bank card.”

opening an account will cost N$5 and each transaction / swipe will cost the customer N$1.

Beware: Fraud Alert!

Telecom to Carry Out UnderwaterEngineering Project in SwakopRepair work on the West Africa Cable System (WACS) off Namibia’s coast is scheduled to start over the weekend.

A cable fault, affecting all traffic transiting via the swakopmund wAcs cable station, was detected on the wAcs during the morning of 29 May 2014. Traffic was restored with an interim solution until the fault is localised and the cable system can be repaired.

telecom Namibia in coordination with the wAcs consortium are preparing for the cable repair activity both on land (swakopmund beach area) and at sea, starting on 16 August 2014. The repair work is expected to be completed by 23 August 2014, depending on various factors including, but not limited to, weather conditions, the outcome of the preliminary onsite inspection and deployment of the repair vessel.

the cable repair procedure normally consists of: localisation of the cable failure point; recovery of the failure cable onto the vessel; cutting and removal of the cable failure section; the jointing of the recovered cable and the spare cable in the cable tank of

the vessel; and a confirmation test and reburial of the cable.

the repair activities for such a shallow water cable will require large industrial equipment to be deployed on the swakopmund beach, while the large cable repair vessel will again operate very close to shore (about 1.5 km) to attend to the laying and jointing at the shore-end of the cable. the beach area will be closed for the duration of the repair activities.

the wAcs is transporting the majority of Internet traffic for Namibia, botswana and zambia and is considered of national importance. During the repair work, telecom Namibia will reroute Internet traffic through other undersea cable systems to mitigate the impacts on customers.

the wAcs is a 14,530-kilometer long submarine communications cable system, connecting south Africa to europe via west African countries including Namibia and was officially put into operation on 26 June 2012. The total cost for the cable system was us$650 million.

Orphanages in Dire Need of Community SupportTanya Calitz

According to various children’s homes and social workers, raising funds for orphanages and similar types of institutions is always a difficult task at hand, yet such an important part of the game.

According to maureen baard, founder of the kids haven in walvis bay, it is an on-going, never ending endeavour.

“Do not get me wrong, we are vastly grateful for every single bit of food, clothing or toy we get from the community, but too often people think that by donating things we are set, but in actual fact without a cash flow we cannot budget, plan or operate properly, and we find that the business community is often reluctant to give money, in the fear that it will be mismanaged,” Maureen shared her frustration with the paper. speaking to maureen it is clear that the institution’s needs go much further than food and clothes.

“we also have bills to pay and we have a normal household like any other, where

a child needs an optometrist, dentist, new shoes, or pencils now, and for that we need a cash flow,” she said. Then there are salaries that need to be paid.

the communal church council social worker, teresa olivier, understands the predicament maureen is in all too well.

“the challenge is that we are not marketers or event planners, and find ourselves trying to fulfil such a role quite often, with a huge lack of experience in it,” Teresa said. “I understand that companies are afraid to give cash, because they might have burnt their fingers once, but if a company does their homework and looks into the accounting system or committee, they will quickly separate the good from the bad.”

she continued, “the cake is only so big, and yet there are so many institutions that need a slice.” According to her, it is difficult to understand the every-day-needs and need for cash if you do not work within such an organisation.

the kids haven currently has 30 children,

and is also the only orphanage that acts as a place of safety for children that need a place immediately before they are placed in care or sent to a foster home.

“we as a whole community

have a responsibility to look after the vulnerable children. it is everyone’s problem and responsibility,” urged Maureen. “where will our kids go? what will become of them if the good samaritans stop? i really want

to plead with the community to support and help us look after our abandoned, vulnerable children.”

if you are willing to help in any way, please do not hesitate to contact maureen baard on 081 221 8081.

Disturbing Photo of Boy Holding up Severed Head Emerged

Dog-Sized Dinosaur Discovered in Venezuela

An image showing the seven-year-old son of an Australian terrorist holding up the severed head of a Syrian soldier is “one of the most disturbing, stomach-turning, grotesque photographs ever displayed” the US Secretary of State has said.

John Kerry, who is in Sydney for talks on us-Australian military cooperation, said that the image tweeted by isis foreign fighter Khaled Sharrouf showed why the militant group posed such a threat to the world. the danger faced by Australia and the us from imported isis- and al-Qaida-related terrorism is expected to be one of the main topics for discussion during the annual summit. And mr kerry proposed taking the issue of foreign fighters to the uN so that countries could unite in agreement on the best practices to protect themselves against terrorist fighters returning from iraq and syria.

sharrouf, 33, is a convicted terrorist who left Australia using his brother’s passport last year. Pictures posted to

Twitter appear now to have confirmed his extended family’s worst fears – that he took his three sydney-born sons to join in the fight with him. Peter Nettleton, the father of sharrouf’s Anglo-Australian wife tara Nettleton, said he had been under the impression that his daughter and his five grandchildren had stayed in malaysia while their father went on to wage war in Syria. He said he was later “gutted” to see a front page photo in the Australian newspaper of his grandson lifting the head by the hair with both hands.

“I'm scared for the children,” Mr Nettleton told Australia’s Daily telegraph newspaper. “what life are they going to have now? can't the government do something to pull these kids away from that man?” Sharrouf has also posted a photograph of his three sons posing with him in matching camouflage fatigues and armed with assault rifles and a pistol with an Isis flag as their backdrop. He also has two daughters, the telegraph reported. mr Nettleton said he had become estranged

Researchers have unearthed numerous teeth, hip, and leg bone fragments that belong to a new dinosaur species they have now named Laquintasaura Venezuelae. It’s the first dinosaur found in the north of South America.

the 201-million-year-old fossils belonging to at least four laquintasaura individuals were discovered in Lower Jurassic sediments of the La Quinta formation of the venezuelan Andes. the newly discovered dinos’ are early members of a group known as ornithischians -- or “bird-hipped” dinosaurs -- which later would give rise to stegosaurus, iguanodon, and triceratops. the other major order of dinosaurs are called saurischians, or “lizard-hipped” dinosaurs, and these include t. rex and Diplodocus. (interestingly, birds evolved from these guys, not the bird-hipped ones.) An international team led by Paul barrett from the Natural history museum in london described the new species in Proceedings of the royal society b this week. laquintasaura walked on its two hind legs and was about the size of a small dog. the largest femur found was 90 millimetres long, suggesting that the bipedal dinosaur’s total body was about one meter in length and 25 centimetres tall at the hip.

“the early history of bird-hipped dinosaurs is still very patchy as so few of them have been found,” explains study author marcelo sánchez -villagra from the university of zürich. by analysing the residual radioactivity of tiny crystals within the rock, the team revealed that laquintasaura lived 201 million years ago -- soon after a major extinction event at the end of the triassic Period. this was one of the greatest mass extinction events, wiping out at least half of the species living on earth at the time. these new fossils show just how quickly dinosaurs bounced back after the event. Additionally, laquintasaura lived in the equatorial region, which was previously thought to be too tropical and inhospitable for these sorts of dinosaurs.

“There are many surprising firsts with Laquintasaura,” Barrett explains in a news release. “Not only does it expand the distribution of early dinosaurs, its age makes it important for understanding their early evolution and behaviour.” these newly discovered individuals ranged between three to about 12 years old. the researchers think they were largely herbivorous, feeding on ferns, though the long curved tips on some of their teeth suggest that they also may have eaten insects and other small prey. because four individuals were found together, the team believes laquintasaura lived in small groups, making this the earliest example of social behaviour in ornithischians.

“it is fascinating and unexpected to see they lived in herds,” Barrett adds, “something we have little evidence of so far in dinosaurs from this time.” The genus name comes from “Laquinta” after the horizon in which it was found, and “saura,” which is Greek for lizard. the species is named for the country and people of venezuela.

from his daughter tara nine years ago – when she was just 17 – after she converted to islam and married her teenage sweetheart sharrouf, an Australian born to lebanese immigrants.

he said that he had never seen his grandchildren, but knew that his ex-wife karen had remained close to their daughter. he said they thought she would be coming back from malaysia “within the month” – though none of the images from syria show her actually out there. speaking to Abc, Australia's foreign minister Julie Bishop said the family would face legal action if

they returned to Australia. she did not say whether her government would make an effort to secure the children's return. “this imagery, it's shocking and it underlines what we've been saying about this threat to Australia and Australians from violent extremism,” she said. ms bishop said jihadists whose “barbaric ideology” threatened Australia's way of life would be one of the key focusses of the talks with mr kerry and the us Defence secretary chuck hagel.

Thursday, 14 August 2014 | 13 It Happened to ME

It Happened to ME!It's almost impossible for me to talk about having lost my faith without first dealing with the phrase "lost my faith." I understand how this phrase is normally used and I know that it has been around for some time.

it has been around longer than the 43 years that I have lived in my ultraconservative faith-based community, and much longer than the 25 years that i was a Pentecostal minister, before coming out as an Atheist. even though i'm now no longer a believer in the divine or supernatural, i am still very much a believer in hope, love and individualism. which is why i have travelled the country over the last year preaching a secular message based on humanist values. Yet, my profession of atheism still doesn't make the phrase "lost my faith" any easier to say. it sounds so negative. it sounds as if something that you value is no longer in your possession. of course, i do realise that to most people it looks like that's exactly what has happened to me, but i don't feel that way at all. i don't feel as if

i have lost anything; instead it's just the opposite. i feel as if i have found something very valuable, indeed. i have found myself.

i dearly wish that there was one day or even better, one particular moment when i stopped believing (lost my faith). it would make my story much easier to tell. but instead, like so many others in the growing secular movement, there was no one particular event, no one particular day when faith suddenly disappeared. instead, it was like my faith in the supernatural and all things related to it were a pot filled with water on the stove. For the first several years of my spiritual journey the burner dial was set to high-heat and the water of my faith was continuously boiling over.

unbeknownst to me, as i entertained thoughts, concepts and belief systems outside of the Pentecostal doctrine that i had inherited, my belief dial was being turned down and the water temperature was decreasing. Along with doctrines, there were also new life experiences that generated thoughts that couldn't be

easily ignored and over time they changed me. in other words, when a challenging thought came my way, i faced it and adjusted according. it took years for all of those small adjustments to add up to atheism. eventually i simply recognised that i no longer believed.

my family, meanwhile, saw my deteriorating mental state as a potent symbol of the lost spiritual place that they believed i was in. i was not evangelising nor was i trying to build my own ministry. i wasn't even committing myself to another pastor's church. they insisted that i was sliding spiritually and, one day, my grandmother came over to our house to pray for me. kneeling in the house, grandma prayed for god to deliver me from the evil spirits that were causing my anxiety disorder. i knew, even then, that a cure for my panic attacks was not going to arrive through prayer - this was a psychiatric disorder that affected my nervous system and it would be science, not faith that would help me.

that is the power of the nervous system: we can think things that

The Day I Lost My Faith aren't true and feel and see things that aren't real. As i dealt with my anxiety and depression, suddenly the subjective no longer held the power for me that it once had. indeed, what i was learning about the power of the mind just might explain some of the experiences i had in the past: like speaking with god or hearing his voice. it was neurologically possible to hear an audible voice when there was no voice there. i began to entertain the possibility that there was an objective way of looking at my experiences and that this objective perspective might prove those experiences to be false. up until that moment, seeing truly was believing, but what did it say about my beliefs if i had not seen or heard anything at all?

Please don't misunderstand me, this realisation was not speedy nor was it pain free. for two decades i feverishly struggled to maintain every shred of faith in the supernatural that I could find. Over the course of 25 years, my ever-reasoning conscience forcibly stripped blind-faith from my heart one layer at a time, until to my surprise, it was completely gone. if there was a single day that was life changing, it wasn't a "lost faith" day but a day in which i lost hope. hope that i would be able to remain in christian ministry. I'm sure it's difficult for most to understand this type of dilemma, but even after realising that i was no longer a believer i was still very much in love with my faith-based community and i simply could not imagine a life devoid of them.

regardless of the devastating identity crisis that i was experiencing privately, i refused to accept that my community would have to go the way of my faith. i was insistent that there had to be a way to work around my non-belief and still work for the greater good within my religious world. but i was wrong. late one night in may 2011, a member of my previous flock called seeking prayer for her brother who had been in a serious accident. As i searched for the right words to console her, speech failed me, and I finally

realised that my ability to minister, which once had formed the cornerstone of my life, had come to an end.

on a day in November 2011, a photo of me and my son at a freethinkers' conference with richard Dawkins was discovered on facebook. the process of losing my faith had been a long one, but the process of being discovered and exposed as an atheist was instantaneous.

i found myself shunned by much of my religious community, losing nearly everything i had known; including my job, my relationships and my house. i had "lost my faith," my ministry, most of my family and friends and all of my finances, but I had finally found myself. i found that i had been a humanist all along and that was what had drawn me into the ministry in the first place, not something supernatural. i found that there is a roll in the world for me as a secular 'minister' and i found that the good i had experienced within my faith-based community was actually the goodness of people. this, more than anything i had experienced before, gave me hope for the future of our world. Yes, you can say that i have lost my faith but I prefer to say I have finally found Hope.

LIFESTYLEArtificial Wombs Are Coming But The Controversy Is Already HereZoltan Istvan is a futurist, philosopher, journalist, and author of the bestselling novel The Trans-humanist Wager. He writes an occasional column for Motherboard ruminating on the future beyond natural human ability.

of all the trans-humanist technologies coming in the near future, one stands out that both fascinates and perplexes people. it's called ectogenesis: raising a foetus outside the human body in an artificial womb. It has the possibility to change one of the most fundamental acts that most humans experience: the way people go about having children. it also has the possibility to change the way we view the female body and the field of reproductive rights.

the term ectogenesis was coined in 1924 by British scientist J.B.S. Haldane. He predicted by 2074 only 30 percent of births would be human births. science has grown much quicker than he realised, and his take is probably much too conservative. some futurists like myself (i’m also married to an obgyn) think ectogenesis will be here in 20 years, and widely used in 30 years around the world.

it’s not an entirely speculative concept; scientists are actively working on developing the technology, primarily for medical reasons. in an article for reproductive health and Social Justice, a daily non-profit publication providing news and analysis on sexual and reproductive health and justice issues, journalist soraya chemaly discussed two leading scientists in the ectogenesis field and their projects:

there are two commonly cited endeavours in progress. focusing on finding ways to save premature babies, Japanese professor Dr. Yoshinori Kuwabara of Juntendo university, has successfully gestated goat embryos in a machine that

holds amniotic fluid in tanks. On the other end of the process focusing on helping women unable to conceive and gestate babies, is Dr. helen hung-ching liu, Director of the reproductive endocrine laboratory at the centre for reproductive medicine and infertility at cornell university. Quietly, in 2003, she and her team succeeded in growing a mouse embryo, almost to full term, by adding engineered endometrium tissue to a bio-engineered, extra-uterine “scaffold.”

more recently, she grew a human embryo for ten days in an artificial womb. her work is limited by legislation that imposes a 14-day limit on research projects of this nature. As complicated as it is, her goal is a functioning external womb.

the ectogenesis technology itself is highly complicated, though somewhat simple looking. basically, it appears as an amniotic fluid-filled aquarium with a bunch of feeding tubes and monitoring cables attached to a live, developing organism. those tubes bring the nutrients, oxygen etc, needed to grow an organism and help it survive; the cables monitor everything going on inside the tank. while much of the technology for starting to experiment with artificially growing a human foetus already exists, bona fide human trials are likely at least a decade off, largely due to the murky legal and ethical implications of the controversial concept.

furthermore, the advent of ectogenesis would mean females would no longer have to solely bear the responsibility of childbirth, or ponder the stressful questions often faced while carrying a child in one's body for nine months: is there lead in the house water i drink, potentially affecting my child's neurological development? Will the flu virus I caught at work damage my baby's forming body? Did the half glass of wine i drank the other night lower my kid's potential iQ?

but perhaps an even more important reason has to do with the health of the babies themselves. Natural birth is filled with perils, and ectogenesis could potentially offer a safe alternative. the theory is that every heartbeat, kick, and moment of a foetus’s life could be carefully monitored, from zygote to the moment the baby takes its first breath of air. Every nutrient the foetus gets would be measured, every movement it makes would be filmed, every heartbeat would be analysed for proper timing.

As with all new technology, traditional biological and social customs could give way to newer practices promising safety, efficiency, and practicality. however, if ectogenesis seems like a slam dunk, it's not. it's rife with both philosophical and political concerns. the most frequent philosophical issue brought up about ectogenesis is how it might change the way society views women. will the feminine mystique be lost by such an artificial process replacing what’s been long a mainstay of the female domain? my short answer is no; rather, ectogenesis could further unchain women from the home, spare them and extend the age at which women can have children.

still, some feminists view ectogenesis with scepticism, saying it will hand over women's sacred birthing ability to science. in an essay in the book feminist Perspectives in Medical Ethics, Julien S. Murphy, chair of the philosophy department and professor of philosophy at university of southern maine, wrote that ectogenesis has sparked "disagreement among feminists." the politics are just as complicated; after all, reproductive rights and procreation are some of the most divisive and loaded topics in washington right now. it is likely people with conservative social views or certain religious concerns would rally hard against the

technology, which threatens to disrupt the symbiotic bond that the sexes have in traditional society.

Some have also suggested an artificial womb leaves a growing foetus without the immediate intimacy its mother’s body provides. Professor and journalist John Nassivera writes in America, the National catholic review, "i can tell you that this deprivation is a very serious thing." meanwhile, the pro-ectogenesis argument is that artificial wombs could make life easier and safer for mothers and foetuses, not to mention allow women who have

damaged or medically dysfunctional uteruses to bear children. similarly, some bioethicists have suggested ectogenesis could also free up homosexual couples and single men from having to use surrogate mothers to bear their children.

regardless what happens in the future, ectogenesis is destined to become one of hottest topics of the trans-humanist future, providing a gateway for how our tech-imbued species views itself, and the way our children will enter the sphere of life.

Pupkewitz Motors Caring Campaign

In red the Pupkewitz team: Israel Ruzo, Sonja van Wyk, Paul Tjikongo, Cartney Egowab, and Ankia Greeff, with Principal Leah and Vice Chairperson Bruni Tholkes.

Various Pupkewits Motor Dealerships are challenging each other to get involved with local institutions and lend a helping hand where needed. Last week Swakopmund Pupkewitz Motors took the opportunity to show their philanthropic side by treating the kids from CHAIN (Children with Handicaps Action in Namibia) with some lovely home-made soup, rolls, desert and a veggie basket for the kitchen.

According to Ankia greeff, branch manager of Pupkewitz motors in swakopmund, various dealerships decided to get involved with their local communities through the Pupkewitz caring campaign.

“each dealership picks a week to lend a helping hand to an institution of their choice, and in the end a board of judges will pick a dealership whose initiative inspired the most and donate X amount to them, to in turn donate to a charity of their choice,” said Greeff during the brunch at the school. chAiN has been around for the past 22 years teaching and looking after children with special needs. the school can accommodate about 20 children, with a wide arrange of needs, from children in wheelchairs to a child

with Downs syndrome. speaking to the Principal, leah kotungondo, it is clear that the school and its children are her passion.

the aim of the school is to assist parents with their children’s educational needs, as well as creating a space for these children to engage with other handicapped children and develop some basic skills.

“we have a huge variety of activities for the children to help develop their skills and give them much needed stimulation and exposure,” says Principal Leah. The school offers art classes, reading and writing classes, free play, and equine therapy on wednesdays. According to leah, institutions like theirs are always dependent on the good samaritans of the community, because many of the parents cannot afford school fees and contribute N$100 a month per child, which does not even cover the electricity bill for the month she explained.

“i would hate to see our school that has served the community for the past 22 years close down, just because they cannot afford the bills. our children are far more important than that.

thus, they are extremely grateful when companies like Pupkewitz reach out. “Elke bietjie help,” she says.
