The unveiling of the brand new visionary N$5 million Yianni Savva Police Station at Afrodite Beach last week marked an important milestone for the community of Walvis Bay and Erongo Region, as the keys for the brand new facility were handed over to NAMPOL to ensure proactive policing in the area.

The Yianni Savva Police Station is a new modern 'Class C' block, financed largely by well-known Walvis Bay

businessman John Savva (Chairperson Walvis Bay Police Public Relations Committee), who built it in memory of his beloved son, Yianni, who lost his life six years ago on the busy stretch of road between Walvis Bay to Swakopmund.

of Henties Bay, walked away with a silver medal at the Science Fair Competition held at Swakopmund this month.

Loide Nashidengo, a school teacher at Kamwandi Combined School told Namib Independent that the scientific fair was held on 22 June and a number of schools from Swakomund took part. From this event, schools that won their scientific projects will now take part in the Erongo Regional Science Fair, to be held next month. She said about 139 schools took part in the science fair for the Swakopmund Education Circuit under which Kamwandi Combined School falls, and Woyitha will now represent his school (Kamwandi

Combined School) at the regional contest.

Woyitha's project which earned him a silver medal was flood control and hydro-power. Other students from Kamwandi Combined School who also took part were Andreas Kamati (Grade 9), who exhibited his Robbtic Handy Boot 3000 project, Collin Goseb (Grade 9), whose project was a wireless switch, Ronnie Nowaseb (Grade 8) who designed an infiltration project and Helmuth Horaseb (Grade 10) who came up with a solar cellphone.

Nashidengo said the Erongo Regional Schools Science Fair will be held from 13th -15th July 2016.

The Savva family contributed the amount of N$2.6 million to construct this Police Station - while an additional amount of N$500,000 is reserved for landscaping in and around the police station. All specifics, furniture and fittings are financed by the Police. The station consists of a charge office, four offices, a strong room, a server room, a boardroom, ablution facilities, a generator room and a spacious interlocked parking facility.

The project was handed to the contractors in February 2015, who completed the two phases for the official opening last week. The third phase of this project will include the construction of a modern road safety checkpoint with an access road to and from the police station.

The area of policing covered by this Police Station, which welcomed in the newly appointed Station Commander Alexander Ochurub, includes the Dorob National Park, the suburbs in and around Langstrand. The station will also handle crime reports in the area.

The new police station is strategically positioned to serve Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, which have witnessed huge growth as both tourist destinations and a cargo hub, as well as servicing the mining industry. The Yianni Savva Police Station will ensure that individuals and cargo along this corridor reach their destination safely, while providing peace of mind to Namibian and International road users and residents.

annual event since 2004, will host the event in cooperation with The Dome where the joint press conference for the event was held on Tuesday afternoon.

“Namibia boasts 7 new world champions, of whom 4 are from Swakopmund, after the last World Championships held in Italy put them in 2nd place overall in terms of medals won by countries, and we were offered the chance to host the 2016 event. The offer was extended to Namibia as the JSKA management (Shihankai) was astounded by the excellence of Namibia Karate, and very impressed by the discipline and good conduct displayed by Namibia karateka, as well as by the quality of management”, was the message from Sensei Willem Burger (Shokotan Chief Instructor), read by Theresa Swart of JSKA Namibia on behalf of Burger.

Burger has called hosting the 2016 JSKA World Championships a “Major Milestone” for Namibian Karate.

Namibia and another twelve countries, Japan, Scotland, England, Germany, Switzerland, Angola, Botswana, South Africa, Mozambique, the Czech

Republic, Kenya and Palestine will be represented.

The Namibia Shokotan Karate Academy regards the event as an ideal opportunity to promote and showcase Namibia and its beauty and diversity, and the skills and standard of Namibia Karate to the continent of Africa and the rest of the world.

International teams will arrive at The Dome on Wednesday, 13 July, for a packed programme in the run-up to the World Championships that will commence on Friday, 15 July. The programme includes Master training courses by international karate masters, as well as a referee course.

The public can attend the World Championships on 15 and 16 June – tickets will be available at the venue, and many stalls with food and other Namibian products will be available. The Sports Coordinator at The Dome, Dave Hammond, told Namib Independent that is was a major event for Namibia, and The Dome, and that it would hopefully be the first of many World Championships and other events of that scale.

General Sebastian Haitota, said that this police station brings relief to the Walvis Bay Police Station which is already burdened with the workload, as previously all crimes committed in this area were reported to them.

He urged residents of this area,

in particular the Long Beach Neighbourhood Watch and different security companies guarding unoccupied holiday homes in the area, to work in partnership with police officers at the Yianni Savva Police Station.

"The officers at this police station are tasked, amongst others, to protect the lives and properties of the local community and potential investors and tourists 24 hours a day, seven days a week," he stressed.

The official opening of this police station, also served as the swearing in of Erongo Police Regional Commander, Commissioner Andreas Nelumbu, who took the baton from retired Commissioner Samuel Hoebeb, after serving as the Erongo Police Regional Commander since 2012, and the police department at large for the

past 25 years.During the unveiling of the

Yianni Savva Police Station, Erongo Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua, applauded Savva and his family for this gesture of generosity in partnering with the Namibian Police Force . "Through initiatives of this nature more Namibians and visitors to our country will have access to the necessary policing services," he said.

"The economic activities in sectors such as tourism, mining, and logistics, through the Walvis Bay Corridor and fisheries, have also attracted many citizens to this region hoping to find employment opportunities, but unfortunately the region has also not be spared the scourge of crimes.

"I am just warning criminals and their cohorts, if you commit a crime in the Erongo Region, you

will be arrested," he added, urging that drivers travelling on our roads must also be vigilant behind the wheel, explaining that the Erongo is an industrial region resulting in our roads being congested with cargo trucks.

"I am confident that the establishment of this Police Station will reduce the rate of criminal activities, and serve as a deterrent to elements on committing crimes in this neighbourhood.

"Effective crime prevention can only be achieved when communities and individual citizens joining hands with our law enforcement agents, so that criminals can be arrested in order to face the full wrath of the law and make our country a safer place."

Kamwandi Combined School gets a helping hand from Erongo Red

Absalom Shigwedha at Henties Bay

The electricity distributor in the Erongo Region, Erongo Red, has given financial assistance to the Kamwandi Combined School in Henties Bay to build a school boundary wall.

Painted blue and built to the tune of N$87,000, the wall was officially handed over to the school by Erongo Red on Friday last week. Some residents of the town, school staff and

Erongo Red staff helped in the painting of the wall. However, the school still needs the hands of good Samaritans for it to be completed.

Speaking at the event, the Henties Bay regional councilor and a member of the Erongo Red Board, Michael Skini, said Erongo Red recognised the role that primary and secondary education has in preparing learners for tertiary education and this was the reason why the company gave the money to the school to build the boundary

Henties Bay Mayor, Herman Honeb

wall.He said Erongo Red support initiatives

to improve the livelihoods of Namibians, thus helping the Government in this endeavour.

“We are building a good foundation for a brighter Namibia. We are committed to be a caring company,” said Skini.

He said Erongo Red also gives bursaries to promising young Namibians to further their education at tertiary institutions. He called on other businesses in the country to financially assist the school, so that they can take it from where Erongo Red has ended and complete the wall.

Henties Bay Mayor, Herman Honeb, said the building of the boundary wall at the school is a good initiative, as once the school is behind the wall, it will help learners to deeply concentrate on their studies.

Honeb said he has noted that educational officials are frequently visiting Henties Bay, which is a sign that the town is doing well educationally. “We need to make Henties Bay a town of educational excellence,” he said.

Honeb said it was also pleasing to learn that the wall is painted in blue as this colour means good things such as

peace, sincerity, confidence, intelligence, stability and wisdom.

The Inspector of Education, Ernest Oliver, applauded the community members, school staff and Erongo Red staff who have contributed to the painting on the wall. The Principal of the Kamwandi Combined School, Henrietta Speelman, gave the vote of thanks at the event, following which the visiting dignitaries were entertained by the school's Oshiwambo cultural group, their Damara/Namibia cultural group, the school choir group and the saluting group.

'Beach Break' seafront erven under the hammer for N$3.5 million

Donna Collins

The much anticipated 'invitation only' private auction of the luxurious 'Beach Break' development sea front plot and plan erven, scheduled for Friday evening, is pulling in a crowd of serious buyers with lots of money to spend.

The scramble is on to snap up some of the last remaining privately owned sea front properties in Swakopmund, and a total of six seafront erven and eight development erven will go under the hammer at reserve prices starting at N$3.5-million for a sea facing spot.

Of the original ten beachfront stands on offer, already four have been snapped up, and by the end of the auction, it is expected that bidding fever will see

these pieces of prime real estate going for even a higher price than set down. Sizes of each sectional erf on the sea front are approximately 450-500m, and only the cream of the crop estate agents in Windhoek and Swakomund have listed this up market development on their books.

Architect Pieter Mostert said this week that there has been a huge interest for such high end property, and that at least 170 'serious buyers' have registered to attend the closed auction on Friday. He also said that no one will be allowed inside the marquee for Friday night's auction without proof of a pre-booked invitation - not even the press - as they need to "protect the privacy and the interest of their exclusive clients".

This luxuious new development

One of the house designs on offer for the few beachfront erven still available, selling for N$3.5 million

in Swakopmund not only offers last remaining beach front spots upon which to build your dream mansion, but going under the hammer as well are eight development erven for the apartment blocks, which will offer breathtaking views and top end finishes. Many of the units have been snapped up already, with the one-bedroom flats going for N$2.7-million whilst the upper-class apartments or Penthouses with three-bedrooms are selling for N$8.5-million! The reserve price for these development erven range between N$9.4-million to a whopping N$17-million.

Rated as one of the most exciting property developments at the coast, construction on the houses is starting at the end of this year, followed by the apartments next year to be completed over two years. Purchasers can choose

between a couple of house design options to choose from as the Beach Break development is opting for a standard look.

Mostert said that the developers are Erf 66 (Pty) Ltd and Spirante Investments, a Namibian based company. A family trust bought the property back in 1998 from the Swakopmund Municipality, and that the entire property of 7 500 sq meters, is in a sectional title development which has been valued at N$35-million. He mentioned that people buying into this develpment are grabbing an incredible investment, certainly judging by the rate that Swakopmund's property has grown over the past two years. Mostert also said

that the shoreline area won't be affected by the development, as the developer plans to construct a boardwark on the high water mark for day trippers and surfers, and to ensure sufficient parking for members of the public.

Commenting on the "hefty price of the beach front house plots, Robert Willson (Estate Agent Seeff Namibia) said that they were well priced, considering that there are literally only two other privately owned beach front erven on the market left in Swakopmund outside of this development. The one is going for N$5.5-million, and the other N$8.6-million. "So you do the maths", he said.

Mayor Alderman concerned about rising crime in Walvis Bay

Absalom Shigwedha

The Mayor of Walvis Bay, Wilfried Alderman, said the death of well-known Walvis Bay businessman, Hans Jörg Möller, has deprived the town of a model citizen, who tried to protect his family during a home robbery. Möller was shot in the stomach when group of five men broke into his house on the early morning hours of 17th June. He died in the Swakopmund hospital the following day.

“On behalf of all residents, I wish to extend our heartfelt sympathies to his wife Carol-Ann Sowden-Möller and their two young daughters, as well as the respective families and close friends. We ask the Almighty to give them all the strength necessary to cope with their sorrow,” said Alderman.

He made these remarks when he addressed the ordinary council meeting for the month of June held at the Kuisebmond Chamber on Tuesday this week.

He said Namibians need to ask themselves as to what can be done to make the country a better place to live.

“We need to feel safe all times. We need to reassess our values so that respect for one another becomes the norm,” said Alderman. He said the destruction of homes and families was further highlighted recently when he received a group of concerned residents of Walvis Bay at his office, concerned that drug trafficking and drug abuse have been destroying parts of the town.

“Children as young as 12 have become enslaved by a new drug called Good-Good, which is relatively a cheap concoction of dagga and various household chemicals. The community

is desperate and needs assistance to root out this evil,” he said.

One of the main hurdles of preventing the community from confronting drug lords and their network of peddlers, he said, seems to be fear of retaliation by criminals.

Alderman said the Walvis Bay Municipality is planning to convene a meeting of important stakeholders to discuss the way forward in dealing with this form of crimes. He however was quick to add that, without resources, the fight against crimes will be meaningless and he was therefore pleased to acknowledge the recent inauguration of the Yianni Savva Police Station near Afrodite Beach, which will equip the law enforcers to perform their tasks more efficiently.

Alderman then informed the meeting that the Walvis Bay Municipal Budget for 2016-2017 will be announced this coming Thursday. “What I can say at this stage is that the budget will reflect the fine balance between affordability, service delivery needs and future growth,” he said.

Coastal chess minds shine at Junior National Chess Championships in Windhoek

Burst water pipe a display of beauty

Maria Davel-Wallis

Many coastal junior chess players excelled at the closed section of the Junior National Chess Championships held in Windhoek over the weekend. Junior chess players who qualified in their different age categories will represent Namibia on National Level in South Africa in August.

More juniors from the coastal region participated in Windhoek over the weekend, after the National Junior Open Chess Championships held in Walvis Bay on early in June had to be cancelled due to technical difficulties. The 200 plus junior players who participated were left disappointed and frustrated when the computer system had failed after the fourth round. After this event, the President of the Namibian Chess Federation, Otto Nakapunda, had told Namib Independent that more juniors per section would be included for the

closed section of the Junior National Championships. After a special meeting of the Federation on 13 June, between 8 and 15 qualifying juniors per section were eventually invited to Windhoek for the closed section of the Junior National Chess Championships.

The Championships started at 18:00 on Friday night and concluded around 14:00 on Sunday. Speaking to us from Windhoek, the head arbitrator at the event, Goodwill Khoa, said they were very happy with the standard and performance of the junior contenders.Local chess coach, Immanuel Gariseb of Royal Chess Minds Academy told Namib Independent that coastal contenders “did extremely well, and it is clear that chess in the Erongo region is improving. Students are working hard and are looking forward to the upcoming Royal Minds Challenge which will take place in Swakopmund during September.”

He says all the parents are

extremely supportive and that, in many cases, this could be “the edge for many players.”

Coastal Chess Minds shining at the Junior Nationals were: Maxime Herrmann u/14 Girls (Gold), Karl-Philipp Hermann (u/14 8th place), Anthony Van Der Meer (u16 Boys -Gold), Liam Blaauw (u8 -Bronze) Alexander Bertelsmann (u10 -Silver), Justine Van Der Meer (u12 - Xavier Hartmann (u14-Bronze) and (Herold Olibile - Bronze). Those awarded are from the Royal Chess Minds Academy, while also representing their various schools: Private School Swakopmund (PSS), Swakopmund School of Excellence (SSE), Walvis Bay Private High School and Dolphins Private School.

Gariseb told Namib Independent that for him, as a coach, the past 6 months have been “nothing short of great”, and he is looking forward to the future tournaments and performance of the students.

A burst pipe at Dune 7 caught the attention of our photographer at the weekend, not only because of the wasteful running water that was gushing forth, but because of the beautiful rainbow it created as the water showered high into the air. Fortunately the Walvis Bay Municipality attended to the matter shortly after the complaint was reported to them, exercising diligence and haste in the country's call to spare our water

resources in a time of severe drought.

The Belgian Choclatique in Walvis Bay celebrated the Day of the African Child recently by inviting a group of children from the Kids Haven Children’s Home for a chocolate presentation and tasting tour.

This was part of a larger initiative which sees the Belgian Choclatique being actively involved with fundraising for the Kids Haven. “We have always been involved with the children’s home, helping to pay their pharmacy account, etc., but now we hope to raise N$15 230 in all, “explains Adelaine Bruwer, owner of the Belgian Choclatique.

Adelaine started her business in November 2013, and it has grown

tremendously since then, so much so that she now employs 13 members of staff. “It all started after a wonderful experience in a dream, where I was shown that I’ll be making chocolates. I was very excited, did a lot of market research and realised that there is a big gap in the market for good quality chocolate in Namibia, especially with so many tourists visiting Namibia throughout the year.”

Adelaine then went for training from a chocolate factory in Cape Town, prior to opening the Belgian Choclatique that November, which specialises in manufacturing chocolate truffles with a variety of fillings, gift hampers, wedding favours, corporate gifts.

“Many clients already told us that we can call ourselves the

“Hamper Specialists”,” says Adelaine. She added, “What is wonderful about our chocolate products is the fact that it is healthy, made from the Cocoa bean, only cocoa powder, cocoa butter & added milk powder together with sugar, but less sugar than other chocolate products available in the market. There are no other oils or preservatives added, in other words, not that fattening at all and gets digested very well, no saturated fats. That is also the reason why you have this heavenly experience when enjoying our chocolate.”

That is indeed wonderful news for all the ‘weight watchers’, to enjoy without having a guilty conscience. Of note is that the Belgian Choclatique also offers a diabetic range, which has a very delicious taste with no unpleasant aftertaste like many other diabetic products. These products are also 100% Banting Friendly. Adelaine says that they welcome private and individual customers, but they get a lot

of work supplying branded chocolate for hotels and lodges, corporate companies and event planners. They also supply products to other shops who are interested in selling these superb and delicious treats.

And what a treat it was indeed for the children of the Kids Haven on 16 June 2016, who came into the shop with wide eyes and noses in the air, taking in the wonderful aroma of chocolate that wafts around the store. “They enjoyed it so much!” said Adelaine.

Adelaine says that the Belgian Choclatique is now involved with the Kids Haven on a permanent basis. “We will be having competitions from time to time, to help them raise funds for their everyday needs for the kids.”

If you would like to support the Belgian Choclatique in this initiative, you can like the Belgian Choclatique’s facebook page and watch out for the great competitions which will be advertised there in support of the Kids Haven.

The fourth and fifth suspects in the murder case of well-known Walvis Bay businessman, Hans-Jörg Möller (50) has been arrested and has appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court last week.

Erongo Police's Detective Chief Inspector, John Matongwe, told Namib Independent that the fourth suspect Elly Ndapuka (29) and fifth suspect Malakia Shiweda (28), were both arrested in Windhoek on 22nd June.

Matongwe said the two appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court last Friday on charges of murder, attempted murder and housebreaking with intent to commit robbery. Just like the first three suspects, they were denied bail due to the seriousness of the case and to allow for further investigation. They were remanded in custody.

All five suspects will now appear in court on the 2nd August 2016. Accused, Gottlieb Panduleni, second accused David Tashiya and third accused David Shekudja, had already appeared in court.

Möller was shot in the stomach when five armed men broke into his residence on 17th June 2016 and died the following day in Mediclinic Swakopmund. He leaves behind his wife and two young daughters, who are campaigning for stricter bail restrictions for accused murderers.

Namibian Goju-Kai students return from training in Japan

Sports reporter

A group of Namibian Goju-Kai senior karate students and instructors recently returned from Tokyo, Japan after having been invited to take part in a karate training/grading cultural exchange event with Goju Kai Japan. The group spent 10 days in Japan during early May 2016. This exchange and training event is by invitation only and has become an annual occurrence which gives students of this martial art the opportunity to experience the cultural roots of karate in the place where Goju Kai karate originated.

The Namibian contingent was led by the Chief Instructor of Namibia, Shihan Leonard Martin, who also had the opportunity to grade and attain the very high level of 6th Dan black belt. In addition to this the status of Renshi Shihan was bestowed on him, which puts him into the ranks of the most recognized master karate instructors in the International Karate-Do Goju Kai (IKGA) Association.

It is a highlight for any karate student to be graded by the most senior members in the organisation, and to then have the opportunity to train under the watchful eye of the organisation’s Grand Master. The Grand Master and International head of I.K.G.A. Saiko-Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi heaped praise on many of the group and Shihan Leonard for the very high standard that he observed during their stay in Japan, they were all true ambassadors for karate and Namibia.

Another significant achievement was the successful grading of Katelin Martin and Brandon-Lee Martin, daughter and son of well-known Shihan Leonard Martin. Katelin has also achieved great success in the international tournament arena this year.

Senseis Dean Theisinger and Llewellyn Manale attained the high rank of Yondan (4th Dan black belt), hard earned after their long and dedicated path with Namibia Goju Kai. Zaid Ely and Bruno Lourenco who have also

proudly served Namibia Goju Kai for a substantial number of years attained Sandan (3rd Dan black belt) and thereby their international instructor status.

Namibia Goju Kai has a long history with Japan with its Founder and President, Renshi Shihan Trevor Norval (6th Dan black belt), during his earlier years in karate having trained under the founder of the style KaisoGogen Yamaguchi.

The style of Goju Kai was introduced to Namibia in 1990. Since those humble beginnings, dojos have been established in Windhoek, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay offering traditional karate teachings as well as the latest training in sport karate. Goju Kai Namibia with the dedication of its senior instructors has since produced some highly qualified karate-ka who have proven themselves in the local and international karate arena.

Following are all the members of the Namibian contingent with their respective grading achievements:• Leonard Martin (Renshi-Shihan - 6th

Dan black belt)• Dean Theisinger (4th Dan black belt)• Llewellyn Manale (4th Dan black belt)• Zaid Ely (3rd Dan black belt)• Bruno Lourenco (3rd Dan black belt)• Katelin Martin (2nd Dan black belt)• Angel Zhang (2nd Dan black belt)• Brandon-Lee Martin (1st Dan black

belt)• Nathan Augustus (1st Dan black belt)• Rayloon Kuilders (1st Dan black belt)• Rasmus Esterhuizen (1st Dan black

belt)• Westley Izaks (1st Dan black belt)• Megan Cupido (1st Dan black belt)

Cgals head for World Choir Games in Russia

Maria Davel-Wallis

The popular chamber choir, the Cgals, is leaving for Sochi, Russia, this weekend, where it will be participating in the 2016 World Choir Games, from 7 July to 12 July. The choir gave a couple of well-attended concerts in the German

Lutheran Church in Swakopmund over the weekend. The founder-conductor of the Cgals, Linda Liebenberg, told Namib Independent that they had been invited to participate in several events, under which the closing ceremony, and they were looking forward to representing Namibia at the World

Choir Games.“What makes our choir unique is

that the members are from all walks of life – with the age difference between the youngest and oldest being 51 years – and also we represent many different cultural groups of the country. This group is a private choir where members have to pass an audition and the group is open to all ladies residing at the

coast of Namibia. The Cgals have over the years become a household name in Namibia, not only because of their singing, and the quality thereof, but also for their love of fun, the group’s spirit and the shared love for music.”

The Cgals will participate in three categories – Musica Sacra, Folklore and Chamber Choirs. The trip cost around N$30 000 per member.

Confirmed: NASA just discovered earth has a new moonOne of the most amazing discoveries recently is that NASA has just declared Earth appearing to have a second moon that has been orbiting around our big blue sphere for nearly a century now, without our knowledge whatsoever.

That’s right, a second moon! However, this moon isn’t exactly the same size as the other one and, in fact, should be called an asteroid - that just so happens to be wandering around with us as we fly through space.

Luckily this second “moon” was found by the Pan-STARRS 1 asteroid survey telescope located in Haleakala, Hawaii.

This asteroid has been extremely illusive due to its sporadic and unusual path of orbit around the Earth. Tilted at eight degrees, the asteroid is considered to be highly elliptical which makes it able to travel within the ranges of 38 to 100 times the distance compared to our “first moon”.

This moon is also being referred to as asteroid 2016 Ho3, apparently it has been captured in our gravitational

pull for just about a century and has been doing a wonderful job of evading our eye for the stars above. In addition, the asteroid makes its way around the sun for 365.93 days, which is seemingly a tad longer than Earth’s 365.24.

Spanning about 40 meters across and is about 100 meters wide, the asteroid’s orbit tends to be one of the harder things to track. Because of its tilt as well as elliptical orbit, the asteroid may appear closer to the sun and can seem to be moving extremely fast compared to our planet, and then in other times the asteroid may be found farther away but moving slowly.

According to a researcher, the asteroid is expected to never get closer than about 14 million kilometres away from Earth. They also claim that the asteroid will never stray off its course more than 40 million kilometres, and is expected to be around for many more centuries before it decides it has bigger plans in the universe.

Dr Heimlich uses his manoeuvre for first time

After demonstrating the life-saving technique countless times, the retired doctor uses it on a choking woman at a retirement home.

The 96-year-old surgeon credited with developing the world-famous Heimlich manoeuvre has used the emergency technique for the first time to save a choking woman.

Dr Henry Heimlich went into action when an 87-year-old fellow resident at his retirement home in Cincinnati, Ohio, had a morsel of hamburger stuck in her throat.

He developed the life-saving technique in 1974 and has demonstrated it numerous times during exercises, but had never before used it in a real-life situation, he told a local newspaper.

"She was sitting in the chair and I turned her around so that her back would be exposed to me, put my arms around her and pressed, where I described it, on the

abdomen, below the rib cage," Dr Heimlich explained.

"And after three compressions this piece of meat came out and she just started breathing. I sort of felt wonderful about it, having saved that girl."

Retiree Patty Ris was lucky enough to be sitting next to Dr Heimlich at the Deupree House facility on Monday when the morsel of food became lodged in her windpipe.

"God put me in this seat next to you," Ms Ris wrote in a note to her saviour, the newspaper reported.

The retirement facility said one of its employees had also noticed Ms Ris in distress and was about to perform the technique on her. But the employee decided not to upstage Dr Heimlich, allowing him to take control.

Deli serves doggy-breakfasts

London and Scotland have more in common than just their voting tendencies, it would appear. Both places also really, really, really like dogs. And more than just as pets: also as brunching companions.

Pedigree London dog parlour Pet Pavilion teamed up with Chelsea-based restaurant Bluebird to create the Bites and Bones Brunch earlier this year, and now Scottish deli Corbie and Cheip, in Auchterarder, Perthshire, is serving special bowls of doggy porridge to four-footed visitors.

Anne Schaeflein, the deli’s owner, came up with the idea shortly after opening last September and spent

months working on the recipe with Ciaran Quigley of Barry Mill, near Carnoustie.

Anne, who has had dogs all her life, created a dog-friendly wholegrain porridge which she serves warm, with vegetables, German bacon or offal from nearby Grierson organic farm, for £3.50 (N$ 71.00) a bowl.

A bag of oats can be taken away for £2.50 (N$ 50.00)

‘Most dog owners are guilty of treating their pet almost like a child, so it’s nice to be able to take them somewhere they can eat alongside their owner,’ she said.
