The Monticello Public Library News Volume: 245 June 2018 Book Club Book Club will next meet on Wednesday June 20th at 7:30pm to discuss Educating Esme by Esme Raji Codell. "A must-read for parents, new teachers, and classroom veter- ans, Educating Esmé is the exu- berant diary of Esmé Raji Codell's first year teaching in a Chicago public school. Fresh- mouthed and free-spirited, the irrepressible Madame Esmé--as she prefers to be called--does the cha-cha during multiplication tables, roller-skates down the hallways, and puts on rousing performances with at-risk stu- dents in the library. Her diary opens a window into a real-life classroom from a teacher's per- spective. While battling bureau- crats, gang members, abusive parents, and her own insecuri- ties, this gifted young woman reveals what it takes to be an exceptional teacher." Between the Covers Book Club Carolyns next pick for her Be- tween the Covers Book Club is The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson. "The Devil in the White City draws the reader into a time of magic and majesty, made all the more appealing by a supporting cast of real-life characters, including Buffalo Bill, Theodore Dreiser, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Edison, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and others. Erik Larsons gifts as a storyteller are mag- nificently displayed in this rich narrative of the master builder, the killer, and the great fair that obsessed them both." It will be on display throughout our six week Summer Reading Program. Roger definitely has a passion for music. He first discovered Blues music while in the Air Force and just knew that that was the music for him. He enjoys listening to rock music, going to lots of concerts, playing the guitar and has even taught his nephews to play guitar too. Roger has a thing for guitars and has a large collection of those alone. He also has a drum kit and bass so that when friends are over they can have a jam session. Roger got the guitar in our display case in Japan while visiting his son. In ad- dition to collecting, he also builds guitars out of cigar boxes and amps out of anything electrical. (Like an old chrome toaster or a transistor radio!) Roger leaves guitars at fam- ily members houses so that he can play for them when he visits. He always plays for his family at holi- day get togethers. What a great way to bring the family together! Thanks, Roger!
