A Word from Pastor Nairn Matthew 7:21-27 (Please read)

Greetings in the Risen Lord, Jesus Christ,

How is our foundation of faith? Is it strong as a rock or is it weak like sand? Has our faith born good fruits of work for others? Have we witnessed and expressed our faith to one another or even our neighbors or family? Are we a wise child of God or a foolish one? During this time of transition of pastors at St. John’s, it is a good time to examine ourselves as ministers of Christ. Are the ministries of St. John’s strong in proclaiming the name of the Lord not just in worship but also in social outreach in the community of Davis? Is there more that we can do not just for the church but also for others? This is a good time to renew and strengthen all aspects of St. John’s Lutheran Church ministries. We must not allow the rains to fall, the floods of the worldly ways, the winds of temptation and evil to weaken our faith. It is a time to strengthen our faith. We need to continue to look to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ through His word that nurtures our faith. It is a time to get more involved in the ministries of St. John’s so that it continues to flourish and grow. Maybe even begin a new ministry. We need to be part of the discussion about a new pastor by supporting members of the call committee or council members. It is a time to renew relationships with members who are not attending. Yes, and even, inviting new people to share in worship and fellowship. We need to look forward not backward to reinforce the ministries of the church. Each person who is part of St. John’s has an important role to play in the present and future of our church. Everyone has been given spiritual gifts to share as part of the ministry of St. John’s. By sharing our spiritual gifts we can become wise people with a strong foundation like a rock, so that when a new pastor is called to St. John’s, we will be prepared to continue the faithful ministries of the church. Remember, nothing is impossible with our faith in God.

Council Minutes

July 8, 2012 Council members present: Mary Frances Good, John Cooper, Melissa Brown, Kathy Thomas, Andy Dalton, Pas-tor Randy Nairn Members present: Jack McGuigan, Jackie Burns St. John’s Prayer List: We removed names from the prayer list. We did not know some of the people on the list. If the congregation feels we need to add names back on the list, we hope they will let us know. Church Picnic: Pastor Nairn will be here the 5th of August. It would be great to have our picnic then. The 12th is our second choice. We can go to Blackwater Falls or Davis City Park. Andy will call and make reservations. Grape juice for Communion: Some people would prefer grape juice over wine for communion (many for medical issues). We can put it in the center of the tray as cups are distributed and Melissa will put a notice in the bulletin. Pastor Nairn’s arrangements: Pastor Nairn would like a room for the next Saturday night (Aug 4th). Melissa will check on this. Pastor Nairn will get a check for being our interim at the beginning of the month, his mileage at the end of the month. Andy will tell Dottie. If someone is in the hospital, please let Pastor “Randy know. We agreed it was a good idea to publish Pastor Nairn’s contact information. Payment for lay leaders and organist: Bishop Dunkin

says that lay leaders need to be paid. The IRS rate for mileage is $.55 a mile. We should be paying our organist. The AGO recommends $350 a Sunday; we know we can’t do this. John made the motion that we pay our organist $100 a week effective today which will be revisited when we have a new pastor. Melissa second. He will be paid at the end of the month. Andy will let Dottie know. Sunday School web site: Kathy has found a site on the

internet for Sunday School that she would like to subscribe to. Melissa said that Sundays and Seasons has some material Kathy will look at this and get us information about the cost of the subscription.

Church Website: We need to have someone working on

our website. Chris Thomas can get the newsletter on the website. Andy knows Phillips Kolsun, who has been generously sponsoring our URL would also love to do our website. Chris is also willing to maintain the website. Council would like someone local and would like Chris to do that. Andy will contact Phillips and make arrangements. New Member: Karen Peterson wants to become a member. John makes the motion to accept Karen as a member. Melissa seconds; all in favor; motion passes. Karen needs to get a letter of transfer from her home church. Opening and Closing building on Sunday: Andy or

Kathy will open the church. We will consider asking Louis to turn on the fans/heat on Saturday. Jack will show him how to use the thermostat. Kathy will be back up. Andy will close up the church. Kathy will get keys made and have them at the bank. We should take down the office hours from our sign (Andy will do). Worship committee duties: Duties will include - choosing hymns (Bob Schaaf) unless preacher of day wants suggestions (OK with Pastor Randy), Bruce is willing to assist. Jack will supervise the sign up of readers. The worship committee will come up with a draft of their policies at the worship committee meeting this Thursday. The lay leaders are self-regulatory. The lay leaders (Davis 5) are meeting again 22nd July with Matt Reigal. Mary Frances gets the wine and will get grape juice. Mary Frances and Dottie will do communion preparation and altar guild. Worship committee will be responsible for the sign. Church Insurance: The council at our last meeting we approved a new insurance policy including the organ which is a better rate per thousand than we have now. We do not have a special endorsement for stained glass windows. In time, Jack will get additional quotes, but we need to do this asap. They will not supply coverage for sexual claims, we can get that through church mutual. Adult Education: Since Allen left, we have no adult

education. Jack has volunteered. Andy motions that Jack lead an adult ed class. Jackie needs to put a query in the bulletin to find out when interested people would like to meet. Jack reminded us that we need to start thinking about what we will do to celebrate the 500th anniversary of reformation--hopefully with the Catholic church. Jack suggested to Father Grassi that we each find 4 or 5 people who could meet and study St. Augustine’s catechism. The overall goal is mutual understanding of the two churches. Andy moved to give Jack permission to get the group together. John seconds. All in favor. Andy moves to adjourn. Kathy seconded. All in favor. Meeting adjourned.

Just a note from your

Council President

Hello Everyone!!! Hope all of you are enjoying your summer. It has been extremely warm here in Davis, but I guess we shouldn’t complain seeing as how the white stuff (snow) could be falling. I am posting Pastor Allen’s address again just in case someone didn’t get it. Here it is: Pastor Allen’s new address is

Rev. Allen Schwarz Canadochly Lutheran Church 4921 E Prospect Rd 2998 Cape Horn Rd Red Lion, PA 17356 York, PA 17406

The MSP has been submitted to the Synod and now we wait to here from Bishop Dunkin when he finds a candidate for us. Seminarians are only available in October and February and we can only interview one at a time. Ordained pastors will also be able to see our profile. Call committee has been elected by council. Those who will be on the committee are Thisbe Cooper (chairperson), Maggie Brown, Sam and Amy Goughnour, Carolyn Pell, Ron and Jackie Smith, Jim Arnold and Rick Watson. We do have lay persons already scheduled to do services through September and Pastor Randy Nairn will be our interim pastor until we find a new one. Pastor Nairn will be here on August 5th and September 9th to administer Holy Communion. Should you have any pastoral needs during this time, please contact Pastor Nairn at 301-501-2410. The Sunday School has finished their fundraiser and I think we did really well. I want to thank all of you who have supported us in our effort. We will be going to Idlewild again this year and would like to invite all the congregation to go if they would like to. I will let everyone know the date in the near future and the cost of the tickets. We hope you can join us for a fun day. Our kids are very special to us. I ask God to help all of us as we look for a new pastor. I am sure he will lead us in the direction that we need to go and that is best for St. John’s Once again, I thank all of you for the wonderful job that you do at St. John’s. You are all very special people

God Bless. Kathy

THE PRAYER CORNER

Pray without ceasing…1 Thessalonians 5:7 Lord, you know better than I know myself that I am growing older, and will someday be old.

Keep me from getting talkative, and particularly from the fatal habit of thinking that I must say something on every subject on every occasion.

Release me from my craving to try to straighten out everybody’s affairs. Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details - give me wings to get to the point.

I ask for grace enough to listen to the tales of others’ pains. Help me to endure them with patience. But seal my lips on my own aches and pains - they are increasing and my love of rehearsing

them is becoming sweeter as the years go by. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally it is possible that I may be mistaken. Keep me reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a saint - some of them are so hard to

live with—but a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil. Make me thoughtful, but not moody; helpful, but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom, it seems

a pity not to use it all—but you know, Lord, that I need a few friends at the end. ~Anonymous

Borrowed from St. Philip Lutheran Church, Roanoke, VA newsletter

Dear Lord, As St. John’s goes through this transition period, help us to remember that it is going to take a united congregation to see us through. Lead us to continue to be willing to help out in any way we can. Help us to be patient with our volunteers and remember that we each are doing the best we can. We all function at different speeds and if left alone will do a wonderful job. Help us keep up the good work as You lead us down this unknown path we have embarked upon. Amen.

Celebrate Jackie Burn's Retirement

Jackie Burns is retiring from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service after 30 years of service. There will be not one but two chances to celebrate Jackie's retirement and the beginning of a new chapter in her life. The first will be Friday, August 17th, beginning at 4:00 pm at the Canaan Valley State Park Resort and Conference Center. This will be a BBQ Buffet in the Canaan Valley Lodge Dining Room. The cost of the buffet will be $18/person (including gratuity) payable at the time of the dinner. There will be a ceremony after the dinner to celebrate with Jackie. The second will be Saturday, August 18th, beginning a 3:00 p.m. at the home of Bruce and Andy Dalton in Timberline Housing Development. This will be a potluck dinner/picnic. If you would like to attend one or both of the celebrations, please RSVP by August 9th (or if you have any stories or photos to share send) to B.J. Feather ([email protected]) or Richard Zane

([email protected] ) or call 304-866-3858.

For more information or directions please contact us.

Jackie Burns is retiring after 30 years of service with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on August 3rd. Jackie coordinated various programs including the Conservation Village at the Forest Festival, Wild School for 120 fourth and sixth graders, helped volunteers from the Friends of the 500th develop teaching trunks for local schools, wrote press releases, staffed the Visitor Center, lead field trips, worked with the Bird Fest planning group, explained the Refuge's hunting policy to a pair of woodcock hunters, as well as coordinating many other programs and activities; this was all just a normal part of an excellent day for Jackie. Jackie was also a frequent contact, administrative coordinator and information source for new volunteers. Born and raised in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Jackie remembers always liking the outdoors. However, she never had that one incident to turn her towards a career in nature that many people have. Her “aha moment” came as a junior in high school when she turned to a guidance counselor for career advice. There was a box of brochures on various career fields, all in alphabetical order. Nearing the end, she found “wildlife biologist” - until then, she'd never known there was such a possibility; she loved biology and she loved the outdoors! It sounded perfect. She earned her degree in Wildlife Biology and Management from WVU and later pursued a Master's in Education. Jackie's career began as a biology tech for the US Fish and Wildlife Service, reviewing permits and developing maps from aerial photographs. This assignment was in Elkins where she became more enamored with the highlands of West Virginia – developing a love for “the music, the mountains and the people”. But a career move to work in environmental education took her across the continent to the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge in California. Later, a transfer to Philadelphia gave her a chance to develop the environmental education program at the John Heinz NWR near the Philadelphia International Airport. While Jackie was in college, the Environmental Impact Statement was being written for the proposed Canaan Valley NWR. As a senior, she solicited support for creating the Refuge. In 2000, when an opportunity to transfer to the young Canaan Valley NWR arose, she jumped at it. She has juggled managing volunteers, developing educational programs and visitor services as CVNWR's Refuge Naturalist.

Jackie lives in Canaan Valley, but she can be found anywhere in the region – participating in or teaching yoga, contra dancing, singing, crafting, enjoying the outdoors or bemusedly watching for the future “which is yet to be played”.
