Pastoral letterand Church Meetings
SSppoottLLiigghhtt®
DDoo NNoott MMiissss TThhiiss FFrreeeeddoommTwo of us were standing speaking withPastor Martin Akumu outside his home.It was late afternoon and hot. We had just been speaking to twothousand children at the opening of acompletely refurbished library, followinga morning and part of the afternoonteaching at a Leader’s Seminar. This was taking place seven miles eastof the city of Kisumu in Kenya, two milesoff the main Nairobi Road. Martin and his family, and some threehundred people in the surroundingcommunity, walk four miles each dayalong a rutted rural track to buy water. Martin houses and feeds ten orphans intwo ‘huts’, outside his tiny home.Carrying water daily for seventeenpeople is no easy task. A hydrologist examined the field outsidehis home, and there was water under-ground.Martin spoke to us about his dream. “Ifonly I could drill a borehole, and installa pump for fresh water.” He is acapable responsible man.“If this water were to be provided, Icould also sell containers of water for a
few Kenya shillings, to help feed theorphans, and prevent people trampingthe four miles to the water centre atNemasaria.”
I have known Martin for seven years. He oversees some 17 rural churchesaround Kisumu, and I have spoken inthese various churches during my visits.
Martin has a ministry to those who arereally poor, and by poor, I mean havealmost nothing!
When local folks back in Scotlandlearned of this water situation, and ofhow easily it could be resolved, therequisite money was generously givenand sent, within a few weeks.
Work started digging a deep well, andat the end of March it was completedand functioning.
The water is clear and clean and peopleno longer have to trek along that roughtrack to the main Nairobi Road for water.
When children come home from schoolthey can now study, and complete theirhomework assignments, instead ofbeing sent to fetch water beforedarkness falls.
This micro project has made animmense and immediate difference in
one local community.Jesus Christ was always taking peopleone more step along the road, andsometimes a stage further than somereally wanted to go, but one more stepwith Jesus is invariably exciting, andwhen we move on to the next stage wecan experience a new sense offreedom.Jesus taught, “If you hold to myteaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and thetruth will set you free”.His brother Jacob wrote, that faith byitself, if it is not accompanied by action,is dead.Faith and action; but do note the order. These rural Kenyans have been set freefrom the drudgery of having to carryheavy loads of water, as a result of oneman’s compassionate vision.Jesus can set men and women freefrom various burdens, sins, and addic-tions.Do not miss the freedom whichJesus Christ, the risen living Son ofGod, offers.

Nairn Community andArts Centre
reflecting a cultural partnership
The face ofCommunity Centresin the Highlands ischanging. Nairn isleading the way inpromoting Arts andCulture in addition tothe more traditionalCommunity CentreActivities. Thisbright, modernadaptable building
with excellent Arts Facilities has become a vital part of theCommunity.
Now in its third year ofoperation the centreoffers a wide variety ofactivities and events forall ages. The uniqueaspect of The Centre isits adaptability. Thelarge comfortableTheatre which can seatup to 300 has cateredfor local events such asFashion shows,Cookery Demonstra-tions and evenweddings! and hasalso hosted ScottishOpera, The NationalTheatre for Scotlandand Traditional stars“Phil and Ally”.
It is home to Music Nairn, Ramage International JazzFestival, Feis Inbhir Narainn and the Nairn Book & Arts
Festival. Renaming the Centre “NairnCommunity and Arts Centre”will reflect this cultural part-nership
Jim Clark, Chairman said “Ithas always been the board’svision to see communitygroups and the arts working
together and sharingideas in thisadaptable architec-tural designedbuilding”.Evidence of thesesuccessful partner-ships can be seenthis June when NairnBook & Arts Festivalhost their annual cel-ebration of literature, drama, art and film at the Community Centre. Parner-ships have been formed with many of the groups alreadyusing the Centre including Cinema Nairn, who are puttingon three films, two concerts promoted by Music Nairn, and “Fun with Gaelic” by Feis Inbhir Narainn

It is home to Music Nairn, Ramage International JazzFestival, Feis Inbhir Narainn and the Nairn Book & Arts
Festival. Renaming the Centre “NairnCommunity and Arts Centre”will reflect this cultural part-nership
Jim Clark, Chairman said “Ithas always been the board’svision to see communitygroups and the arts working
together and sharingideas in thisadaptable architec-tural designedbuilding”.Evidence of thesesuccessful partner-ships can be seenthis June when NairnBook & Arts Festivalhost their annual cel-ebration of literature, drama, art and film at the Community Centre. protection while also securing our jobs.
Moray Council could either change the de-sign of the scheme or commit to relocat-ing M&C’s Garden Centre.
Both the High Street shop and Garden Centre operate as one business and their combined loss to the town would be huge.
We bring £1million to the local economy every year and sup-port numer-ous local suppliers - some of whom fear they would close if we do. Town centre vitality would diminish; visitor numbers to the area would decrease; and Forres would lose an institution which has been in the town for nearly 130 years.
Under the current plan, the Garden Centre would be in the mid-dle of a major civil engineering project for up to two years and
-dict a third of business would go.
Land would be per-manently lost to the
works and the seclud-ed plant selling area would be swamped by an elevated A96.
As staff, we unani-

Please feel free to speak to any of us for more details or support our drive by signing our petition - either in-store or online.
Thank you.

At the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS) weare only too aware of how much whales and dolphins havealways fascinated us humans and that seeing these amazinganimals in their natural environment is often a memorable ex-perience. People tell us just that every day! If you choose the right site and invest a little patience, thenyou could glimpse one or more of the 24 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises recorded around the Scottish coast. If you do fancy getting out by yourself, with the family or thedog to see some of these creatures, then the Moray Firth is afantastic area to see whales, dolphins and porpoises fromland. The resident population of bottlenose dolphins tendsto spend a lot of time close to the coast and can be veryactive, making them easy to spot. Porpoises are smaller andtend to be quite shy but with a bit of practice, they can also be
seen around the coast. Even Minke whales make regularvisits to some of the deeper coastal waters like Cullen Bay. Before you get out and about, there are some considerationsthat you will need to take onboard- a good set of binocularsfor a start! In the Moray Firth area, the bottlenose dolphinsand minke whales tend (not always though) to be seen moreregularly in the summer months - watching in good weather(and earlier in the day) will increase your chances of sightinga whale or dolphin. On a windy day, waves and sea spraymay obscure a dorsal fin breaking the surface. As for good viewing spots, there are countless great placesfrom which you can watch for whales and dolphins in theMoray Firth. Top sites include; Cromarty Sutors, ChanonryPoint, WDCS Dolphin and Seal Centre at North Kessock, FortGeorge, WDCS Wildlife Centre at Spey Bay, Cullen Bay,Broughty Ferry Castle, and Aberdeen Harbour. If you want to watch for whales and dolphins in comfort andwith easy access to food and facilities, then the WDCS centreat North Kessock is ideal. From the Cullen Bay Hotel too, youcan even look for minke whales through the dining roomwindows while you eat! Other sites such as Lossiemouth,
Nairn and Spey Bay offer easy access to cafés and toilets.Fancy being guided by the experts? Then WDCS can helphere too. Some of the best encounters with whales anddolphins are when out walking the cliffs and beaches, and ifit is an all round encounter with nature that you are interestedin then you could sign up to WDCS' PoD Plod, a brand newchallenge event taking place in August, and created to helpraise funds to protect the dolphins of the Moray Firth. Theevent is a 26-mile sponsored walk along the breathtakingMoray Coastal Trail from Findhorn Bay to Spey Bay….. thechallenge is to do it in 2 days!Guided by Sarah Dolman, WDCS’s head of policy forScotland, and Alice Pope, WDCS’s Scottish ConservationOfficer, you will also be taken on a dolphin and wildlife boatcruise, look out for dolphins from viewing spots along theroute, enjoy a reception and guided tour of the WDCS WildlifeCentre at Spey Bay and finish with a dolphin watching trip toChanonry Point with resident dolphin expert, Charlie Phillips. No matter where or how you choose to go watching, anotebook and ID guide are useful to take with you. These willhelp you to make notes about what you are seeing and lookup the details if you are not sure. If you spot something thatpuzzles you then WDCS now has a comprehensive speciesguide that can be accessed on-line through wdcs.org. Makegood notes and take pictures, then check them on-line whenyou get home.If you get hooked, then you could become a regular WDCSshore watcher. Contact our volunteer manager and we’ll getyou trained up and watching the sea! It’s a vital part of whatWDCS does as we use our shore watch data and otherresearch to try to understand dolphin movements all yearround and better manage potential impacts to them and theirenvironment.

Tarte Tatin
Tradition says that the Tarte Tatin was first createdby accident at the Hotel Tatin in Lamotte-Beuvron,France in 1898. The hotel was run by two sisters,Stéphanie and Caroline Tatin. There are conflictingstories concerning the tart's origin, but the predominantone is that Stéphanie Tatin, who did most of thecooking, was overworked one day. She started to makea traditional apple pie but left the apples cooking inbutter and sugar for too long. Smelling the burning, shetried to rescue the dish by putting the pastry base ontop of the pan of apples, quickly finishing the cookingby putting the whole pan in the oven. After turning outthe upside down tart, she was surprised to find howmuch the hotel guests appreciated the dessert.
IInnggrreeddiieennttss150g/5oz unsalted butter1 fresh vanilla pod200g/7oz caster sugar8 apples300g/10½oz puff pastry1 medium egg, yolk only, plus 5ml double cream - to make egg wash150ml/5fl oz crème fraîche to serve
FFoorr tthhee bbuutttteerrssccoottcchh ssaauuccee150g/5oz caster sugar150g/5oz unsalted butter150g/5oz golden syrup70g/3oz whipping cream
Cut the unsalted butter into thin slices and mouldthe butter slices (using well washed hands) into a non-stick frying pan with high sides.
Split the vanilla pod and mix the vanilla seeds byhand with the sugar. Tip the vanilla sugar onto thebutter and shake the pan until the sugar is evenlydispersed.
Peel and core the apples and cut in half through thecore. Pick out any pips. Arrange the apples skin sidedown. Pack the apples in as tightly as possible.
Cook on a baking sheet on top of the stove untilthe apples have started to caramelise. You may need tochange this tray a few times during the cooking processbut it saves the oven top. Always take great care whendealing with hot liquids and under no circumstancesleave it alone.
Roll out the puff pastry evenly to about 2mm thickon a floured surface and prick with a fork. Place on topof the apples and cut the excess pastry away. Egg washand then bake in the oven at 200C/400F/Gas 6 until thepastry is golden brown, about 15 minutes.
Meanwhile make the butterscotch sauce. Place thesugar, butter and golden syrup in a stainless steel panand boil until the sauce is a dark caramel colour. Addthe whipping cream to the hot caramel and stir untilmixed thoroughly.
Press the tart with a plate that fits the inside of thepan and drain any excess liquid. Leave to rest for 20minutes. Then turn the tarte tatin out onto a plate andserve immediately. Pour the caramel sauce around andoffer the crème fraîche separately.

Police ReportP.C. Eric Craig attended and gavean update on Policing matters. P.C.Craig informed the meeting thatthings had, happily, been fairly quietof late with a 10% - 20% reductionin reported crime in Nairn,Badenoch and Strathspey areascompared to same time last year.Nairn has not suffered from cutsalthough some Supervisor roles hadbeen reduced. There has been aspate of vandalism in the Fisher-town area.
Matters Arising From Previous Minute Not Otherwise On AgendaElection of Chair ~ C. Cllr HarryThompson was proposed by DickYoungson and seconded by JohnMackie, at this point the retiringChair John Mackie stood down andhanded over the Chair to HarryThompson.Election of Vice-Chair~ C. Cllr. JohnHart was proposed by John Mackieand seconded by Dick Youngson.Election of Secretary ~ C.Cllr JohnMackie was proposed by DickYoungson and seconded by MartinAshford.Election of Treasurer Dick Youngsonwas proposed by John Mackie andseconded by Martin Ashford.Co-option ~ Martin Ashford and Dr.Alistair Noble were co-opted ontoNairn Suburban C.C. with full votingrights. Proposed by John Mackieand seconded by Dick Youngson.
Chair’s Report Sandown Lands Inquiry ~ said therewas little happening at the moment,
we probably wont hear anything tillafter the General Election. Hethanked John Hart and NairnConcerned Residents Group fortheir presentation to the Inquiry andalso Dr’s Alistair and Joan Noble fortheir contribution on behalf of thelocal community.
Community Council ConsultationJohn Mackie & Martin Ashford willcarry on with the consultationprocess. There will be a meeting ofthe Nairnshire C.C.’s on Tuesday4th. May 2010 at 7pm in the Court-house.There followed an open debate onthe Highland Council’s ProposedCuts consultation. The meetingagreed, generally, that while theSwimming Pool had grabbed theheadlines, and consequently thepublic attention, there were manyother important services facing cuts.Bus Services to and from theHospital were identified as potentialproblem, leaving some out-patientsand people attending GP Surgerieswith no option but to pay for Taxi’s orwalk.vDr. Noble commented that theavailable resources needed to beidentifiedvand the various transportoptions rationalised.
Treasurer’s ReportC. Cllr. Dick Youngson reported thatour current balance was £231.57.He also reported that a sub-committee from the Nairn C.C.’swas being formed to deal with localplanning issues that affected Nairn, and not just in the C.C. areasinvolved. Brian Stewart suggested
that this joint committee should lookat “joined up thinking” in respect ofroads and not just building. C. Cllr.John Mackie commented thatNSCC still had not officially beennotified about a planning applicationin respect of the former Convales-cent Home.
Oral or Tabled Reports from LocalAuthority CouncillorsCllr. Laurie Fraser told the meetingthat THC were to meet BearScotland on Monday 3/5/2010.Cllr. Fraser will also look into thereason why no notification forthe Convalescent Home wasforthcoming.
