Cycling In Moray-
A Personal View
As a cyclist for at least 30 years, I have cycled along mostroads and cycle paths in the North East. Finding my wayaround was not a difficult thing to do as I would pick up anordinance survey map, pick a road or track and off I went. Bydoing this I discovered many fabulous cycle paths and tracks. In some cases an animal track in the woods would be a greatway of getting about. Most paths and tracks nowadays arelooked after by the Forestry Commission, they are well main-tained and offer real fun for all cycling abilities. Here are justa few tracks I have come across. Whiteash Trails, Fochabers - The Fochabers Ring. Adifficult varied cross country trail you’ll want to ride again andagain. A difficult climb to the monument, then the fun starts. To complete this ride is a good outing at 8km. Ordiequish Trails start at the car park.An easier ride for the less adventurous, a wee bit for everyone. The Soup Dragon This is great fun, a friendly route that can beenjoyed by everyone. The only catch is the climb, but wellworth it, I promise. A good 5 km round trip. The Haggis This is a long trek which leads in the direction ofBen Aigan, full of interest but could take most of the day. Nottoo difficult, I would personally recommend this for a greatday out.Gordzilla Not the monster it sounds… a great flowing routewhich could be done at speed or at a more peaceful pace. Not a long ride at 1hr but could be liked to other paths likethe ‘Haggis’.The Gully Monster As the name suggests an awesome trailof monster proportions! Not many have ridden one like it.More for the technically minded and a great ride. Quarrelwood, west side of Elgin A great place to learnthe skills of off road cycling and for the family to enjoy the sur-rounding beauty of this woodland area. A popular place forwalkers, so watch how you go and follow the code. Ben Aigan Trails A95 Ben Aigan Car Park - this has 3tracks all very different. The Ben Aigan Hammer A ride round the summit of Ben Aiganit has some of the most beautiful views of the Spey Valley.
Lots of bumps and wooden walking sections but well worththe travel to the start. The Mast Blast Not for the faint hearted, this trail is very fast, downhill with rocks and jumps. Once you hit the forest roadremember to follow the marker and take the right turn. This isa single track which takes you right back to the car park. The Pink Fluffy Bunny For the more experienced, not thecuddly trek the name would suggest. Fast, free, furious anddownhill. More a Hare than a Rabbit I think!! Best of thebunch, but be careful. Sanquhar Woodlands, Forres This is a ForresCommunity Woodland Trust facility. A designated mountainbike trail within the Sanquhar woodland. A three colourgrading: moderate; difficult; jumps. This means that all levelsof ability can enjoy this beautiful trail. A total of 1.1km, butpacked full of fun. Culbin Forest, Nairn Heavy-duty mountain bikes aren’tnecessary here. This is fairly level terrain with a mixture oflong, straight tracks where you can pick up speed, andwinding paths among dunes covered in pine trees where youcan just enjoy a leisurely cycle. There aren’t any specific biketrails so you can make up your own route within the forest. And it’s easy to find your way around, with numbered junctionmarkers and a helpful free map available. If you want to cycleto Culbin, National Cycle Route 1 runs through the south sideof the forest, around 800 metres from the Wellhill Car Park.
These are but a few of the wonderful treks, tracks and pathsyou can travel within the Moray Coastal area. For people whoprefer harder surfaces, there are many roads that branch fromthe A96 that can take you along quiet country roads enablingyou to see a lot of what you would miss if you travelled by caror train from Inverness to Aberdeen. In this age of 50’’ TVsand computer games I recommend that you get out there andsee your beautiful Moray Coast and get fit at the same time.If further information is required, log on to the Internet andsee what’s available in your area, or pop in to your local cycleshop for advice on all aspects of cycling.
Happy Cycling!Reg Stuart, Stuarts Cycles, Forres

What will you believe this Easter?
Why do you believe what youbelieve? If you want to answer that question, then you really need to know whatyou believe. For example, do youreally believe what the Bible tells usabout Jesus, or have you been influ-enced by others to think differentlyabout Jesus! In fact, there are manypeople who do not take the time toprove what they actually believeregarding the biblical account ofJesus. Many people assume whatthey believe is right because that iswhat they have learned over theyears.
Where did you get your beliefs? Is the source of your religious beliefsthe Bible - or some other authority? Ifit is not the Bible, then maybe yourEaster will be all about those lovelyEaster eggs and Easter bunnies! Onthe other hand, the Bible gives ussomething far more substantial andmeaningful to think about. Indeed, this is the time of year to remember
the death and resurrection of JesusChrist.
Do you believe that Jesus died foryour sins?Let us never forget the brutality ofChrist’s crucifixion that all theGospels tell us about! Yet manytreat the historical events of Christ’sdeath as if Jesus were a fictionalcharacter like the Easter Bunnybecause that is what they have beenled to believe. But what we need toremember is that Jesus was a realperson who died for our sins on thecross. After all, the Old Testamentprophets foretold of Christ’s deathwith extreme accuracy hundreds ofyears before it actually occurred. Andthe whip that tore his bleeding backopen was a real whip - just like thosebig nails that were driven into Hisbody because of our transgressions.
Why should we believe that Jesusdied for us?The author of Hebrews says inchapter 9:22, ‘...without shedding ofblood is no remission.’ Therefore
Jesus blood was shed, so that wecan experience forgiveness of sin. Ifyou do not believe that, then youcannot know God in a personal way. This kind of language might seemstrange to those who have never ex-perience Christ’s forgiveness. However, I can testify that as youngman my life was completely ruinedby alcohol, until someone told meabout a Saviour who could sort outmy messed up life. I thought therewas nothing to lose by asking God toforgive me, and it was as simple asRomans 10:9-10 says, ‘That if youshall confess with your mouth theLord Jesus, and shall believe in yourheart that God has raised him fromthe dead, you shall be saved. Forwith the heart man believes to right-eousness; and with the mouth con-fession is made to salvation.’ Now,that is a powerful reality you canbelieve and experience this Easter ifyou real want to – the choice is yours!

®Donnie Darko’s favourite!
Rabbit Spring Rolls
page 12 - April 2010 SpotLight - Nairn and District
Donnie Darko came to dinner and subsequently wecooked him a great spring time recipe! Rabbit is a verylean meat with virtually no fat on it and has a verydelicate flavour.
Get your local butcher to bone the rabbit and cubethe meat, which will make it much easier for you to use.
Anyone wondering who Donnie Darko is, he’s theteenage boy from the film of the same name who is‘guided’ by Frank, a demonic time travelling rabbit!
For the spring rolls450g rabbit - 1 cm cubed - this can be replaced with chicken50g bean sprouts5cm piece fresh root gingercut into matchsticks1 tbsp chopped fresh coriander, stems only1 red chilli, finely chopped1 egg12 sheets spring roll wrappers or filo pastryVegetable oil, for deep frying
For the dressing150g sugar200ml rice vinegar150 ml light soy sauce2 limes, juice onlyPinch star anise powder - optional1 clove garlic
For the salad½ red cabbage, finely shredded 1 apple peeled and grated2 red onions finely sliced
For the spring rollsMix together all of the spring roll ingredients, except
for the wrappers and egg, until well combined.
Lay a spring roll wrapper on the work surface andspoon some of the filling into the centre. Draw in the
sides of the wrapper, then roll upwards, sealing theends with the beaten egg. Repeat with the remainingspring roll wrappers and filling, until you have 12 springrolls.
Half fill a deep, heavy-based pan with vegetableoil and heat to 180°c. Deep-fry the spring rolls in smallbatches for 6-8 minutes, or until golden-brown and crisp.Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchenpaper.
For the dressingBring the sugar and vinegar to the boil in a pan,
then simmer for 5-6 minutes, or until thickened andsyrupy. Take off the heat and add the remaining ingre-dients. Set aside to cool.
For the saladToss all of the salad ingredients together, then
drizzle over the dressing and mix well to coat evenly.
To serve, pile the salad onto serving plates andplace the spring rolls on top. Garnish with corianderleaves and lime wedges.

In the event of more than 5we would require a Postal Ballot to electthe 5 Comm. Cllrs.• Comm. Cllr. John Mackie gave hisreport covering some of the issues dealtwith over the past 4 years, some withsuccess and others not so successful. He also outlined the numerous changesto Community Councils over that periodand highlighted the amount of time spenton Planning matters, which was verydifficult due to lack of adequateresources. He also highlighted some ofthe surveys NSCC had undertaken, involving A96 safety; Play Equipment inour area; Spring Clean-ups undertakenall of which had a positive effect on our
neighbourhood. Our efforts in relation tothe A96 has resulted in local ElectedMembers; MSP’s and GovernmentMinisters all coming forward and recog-nising the problems and identifying theneed for a Nairn By-pass. He then wenton the thank the various Cllrs. Who werestanding down and outlined some oftheir achievements. He also thankedTHC Elected Members and Council De-partments for their support over theyears, also Northern Constabulary; TheNairnshire Telegraph and Spotlight fortheir support, which was gratefully ac-knowledged. He also thanked theComm. Cllr’s. Wives/partners for theirsupport when we were attendingmeetings and other duties. Without all ofthem we would be able to function.• Comm. Cllr. We have lodged a complaintagainst this.• Cllr. Laurie Fraser thanked NSCC Cllrsfor all their work over the past 4 years, inparticular in relation to the A96.• Comm. Cllr. Youngson informed themeeting about an application submittedin respect of Little Balblair House(former Convalescent Home) on Moss-side Road. The application was to dividethe original building and to add a further3 apartments, making an additional 5
apartments. This would require removalof an number of trees which are coveredby TPO’s and would greatly increase thevehicular traffic emerging onto Moss-side Road, as well as requiring up to 13Rubbish Bins to be placed on thefootpath at that entrance. Car Parkingbays proposed would further impact onthe Tree root systems. The meetingunanimously agreed that NSCC shouldlodge an objection to this application. We have still to be formally told aboutthis application by THC Planning Dept.He also reported that a previous appli-cation for Sandown House had beenapproved for the addition of two rooms(B & B) & we had supported this appli-cation.• Likewise Deskford Cottages hadapplied for an extension which we weresupporting.• Murd Dunbar asked to speak in con-nection with the Firhall Bridge which isin need of upgrading to allow disabled;wheelchair users and mothers withpushchairs to cross more easily.NSCC was already aware of this issuefrom Press coverage and the Chair, withthe agreement of those in attendance, gave our full support to this venture, andoffered to help in any way.Next Meeting - 7.30pm on Tuesday 2nd.March 2010 in Nairn Academy todetermine the Election of NSCC Candi-dates for the next 4 year term.
