Imagine if every day at 4pm, you had to stand in a line with your child and the clothes on your back, waiting for the line that seems to go on and on forever. You lean to your left and then to your right to see if the line is even moving. Then you feel a little tug on your hand, and as you look down, the afternoon sun hits the big brown eyes of your four year-old daughter as she asks, “Why is the line so long mommy, I’m hungry?” You respond, “I don’t know, but we have to be patient.” She then says, “Why do we always have to stand in line to eat?” as her face begins to frown. You take a deep breath, and all you can say is, “I know, I know.”

This scenario may seem like a scene out of the movie “Pursuit of Happyness,” but the reality is, this scenario plays out every day in the U.S. We see infomercials asking us to donate money to kids who are starving overseas, but what about the kids and families that are sleeping in shelters, or the homeless, or maybe the people down the street or even next door? When we were younger, our parents told us to “clean the plate, because there are kids starving all over the world,” but as a child that has an abundance of food in the refrigerator or the pantry, the concept of hunger is a distant thought. We use the word starving interchangeably with just being hungry, because we have never had to experience true hunger.

When trying to come up with a theme for this article, I asked a friend's nine year-old daughter, "What would you do if you could change the world?" She paused for a second and responded with a shy confidence, "feed the hungry." I stood in awe for a few seconds, amazed by such a mature response, but I then realized that this nine year-old has pointed out a major issue within the U.S. that is oftentimes swept under the rug until the holidays. There are organizations and people who see the need to help, but many of us do not step outside of our busy worlds to even see that the cashier at your local grocery store, or the waiter at your favorite restaurant barely makes enough money to feed their family, but too much to get assistance, or how many kids sit in the classroom day after day depending on the free breakfast and lunches as their only meals of the day.

This article was not meant to make you feel pity on these people who work hard every day to provide the best way they know how, but to put a “HUNGER” in your belly for change. We all have the ability to make a difference, if we are willing to step outside of ourselves throughout the year to make a difference in someone’s life.

Here are a few small ideas that can have a major impact in the lives of people who are barely surviving in one of the richest countries in the world.

These ideas may seem small, but to those who need help, these small gestures of aid could change their lives forever. Expand your world and watch how you can turn lives around and bring hope back to the hopeless, or faith back to those who may have given up on God’s ability to better their situation. Let’s get our “Hunger” back and let that put a fire in our belly to change the world.

Special Message – To my inspiration Monica Acosta: Keep dreaming big and watch the world change around you!

Pam Powell Joins Rev. Al Sharpton on

Voter Education Tour

P astor Pam Powell, of Pam Powell Ministries, joined the Reverend Al Sharpton in Eatonville, Florida at

Macedonia Missionary Baptist, where Willie C. Barnes is the pastor, in support of the Voter’s Education Tour. Powell and other members of the African American Council of Christian Clergy plan to host several seminars during the next several months to advise people about new voting districts and how to make sure their voter registrations are in order. Powell is also a candidate for the state House of Representatives in District 46, which is in Orange County and includes Pine Hills. "We want to ask them: 'Are you registered? Can you vote? Do you know if there's been a precinct change?' because with redistricting, people are very confused," she said. Sharpton told the pastors to make sure people in their congregations know about changes in voter laws and that their identification and registrations are in good order. The coming presidential election is too important for people to be turned away from the polls, he said. Sharpton concluded his remarks with "This is not just another election, the future of this country will be determined by this election, and Florida is ground zero."

Nestled on the Hope Church campus at 3032 Monte Carlo Trail, Orlando, Florida, the school is poised to offer a new resource to the greater Washington Shores community. Applications for the 2012-2013 school year are currently being accepted online at: http://www.pinecrestcreek.com/ and at the administrative office of the Hope Church.

In response to conversations about moving forward with innovative ideas for community enrichment, Bishop Wiggins has been working to assist in the development of educational enrichment opportunities to address the growing needs of the area’s residents. “Our goal for Pinecrest Creek Academy is to provide our current and future generations innovative strategies for academic success,” he states.

Pinecrest Creek Academy is a tuition-free, Orange County Public School Board approved charter school. Opening August 2012, the school will launch a new path of progress in education for the Orlando community. The First Academy is a Christ-centered K-12 college preparatory school located near the heart of Washington Shores in Orlando. The school recently joined hands with neighboring pastors to inaugurate the 2012 Pastors Leadership Award, which honors students from low-

income backgrounds that evidence strong Christian character and outstanding academic potential. Six very special students received tuition awards and will be attending The First Academy this fall. Praise God for the academic giftedness and extraordinary spiritual sensitivity of children in our community!

Place buttered side down in the pan. If possible, place a steak weight or bacon press on the sandwich. Once side is golden brown, butter other side. Turn sandwich over and place the weight back on the sandwich. The second side will cook quicker. Remove from pan, cut diagonally and serve immediately.

In the early 19th century, when methods of chemical analysis first became available, scientists began extracting and modifying the active ingredients from plants. In the U.S. chemists began making their own version of plant compounds, beginning the transition from raw herbs to synthetic pharmaceuticals. Over time, the use of herbal medicines declined in favor of pharmaceuticals.

Recently, the World Health Organization estimated that 80% of people worldwide rely on herbal medicines for some aspect of their primary health care. In the last 20 years in the United States, increasing public dissatisfaction with the cost of prescription medications, combined with an interest in returning to natural or organic remedies, has led to an increase in the use of herbal medicines. In Germany, roughly 600 - 700 plant-based medicines are available and are prescribed by approximately 70% of German physicians.

How Do Herbs Work? For most herbs, the specific ingredient that causes

a therapeutic effect is not known with certainty. Whole herbs contain many chemical and nutritional ingredients, and it is likely that they work together to produce the desired medicinal effect. Many factors determine how effective an herb will be. For example, the type of environment in which a plant grew will affect its components, as will how and when it was harvested and processed.

How are herbs used? The use of herbal supplements for medicinal purposes

has increased dramatically over the past 30 years. By recent law, all herbal and dietary supplements are required to adhere to strict manufacturing guidelines, called "Good Manufacturing Process" or GMP. It should be noted that strict manufacturing guidelines do not necessarily guarantee the quality of the materials used by supplement makers and supplements -- unlike pharmaceutical drugs -- can be marketed without undergoing testing to prove their safety and effectiveness.

Herbs are often used in combination to enhance a specific therapeutic effect. Consumers must take many things into account when using herbs, such as the species and variety of the plant, the plant's habitat, how it was stored and processed, and whether or not there are contaminants (including heavy metals and pesticides). For this reason, it is recommended you seek the care of a trained expert in herbal medicine to treat a medical condition, particularly when the condition requires prolonged care.

For additional information on this topic contact us or visit us at www.mynaturesdelight.com

Dr. Corlis Renee Johnson, Pharmacist, Functional Medicine Practitioner.

Plants have been used for medicinal purposes long before recorded history. For example, ancient Chinese and Egyptian papyrus writings describe medicinal plant uses. Indigenous cultures (such as African and Native American) used herbs in their healing rituals, while others

developed traditional medical systems (such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine) in which herbal therapies were used systematically. Scientists found that people in different parts of the globe tended to use the same or similar plants for the same purposes.

If you do have garden space, here are the perennial medicinal herbs that I recommend.

Chasteberry: A perennial flowering shrub, this is a great herb for treating women’s problems.

Goldenseal: An antibiotic herb, goldenseal grows best when planted in a shady area.

Lemon balm: Also known as melissa, this weedy antiviral mint has sedative properties. Although it sometimes looks like it has died away, it always comes back.

Mountain mint: An insect-repelling herb that should be more popular among gardeners than it is.

Oregano: Another weedy mint-a great source of antioxidants.

Self-heal: The reputation of this mint as a panacea is only slightly exaggerated.

Spearmint: This herb is about as good as peppermint for settling the stomach.

St. John's Wort: Simply the best herbal treatment for depression.

Tansy: This herb contains some of the same anti-migraine compounds as feverfew.

Valerian: The roots contain a great anxiety-relieving sedative. But be warned - the tea smells like dirty gym socks.

Wild yam: Many herbalists recommend this herb for women's reproductive health.

Willow: The willow tree's easy-peeling bark contains the herbal version of aspirin.

Growing an Indoor Herb Garden An Herbal Vineyard would be ideal,

but you don't need an estate - or even a yard - to grow medicinal herbs. All you need is a kitchen windowsill where you can grow a potted aloe plant - your instant, herbal emergency kit in case of accidental burns.

There are many other herbs that you

can raise on a windowsill or on your back porch. If you're a city dweller, you can find space in a roof garden, courtyard, balcony or fire escape. Quite a few medicinal-culinary species that are native to semi-arid climates will also flourish in sunny kitchen windowsills. Here are some to consider. Basil: This insect-repelling herb is

recommended for treating bad breath and headache.

Chives: Along with their cousins, garlic, leeks and onions, chives help prevent cancer and treat high blood pressure.

Dill: This herb is deservedly famous as a remedy for colic and gas.

Fennel: This herb is good for treating upset stomach and indigestion.

Hyssop: Mentioned in the Bible, hyssop contains several antiviral compounds and is useful in treating herpes. (It's also under review as an AIDS therapy.)

Lavender: Some varieties of this lovely herb are loaded with sedative compounds that can penetrate the skin. Toss a handful into your bathwater if you want a nice-smelling way to relax.

Parsley: Best known as a great source of chlorophyll for combating bad breath, parsley is rich in zinc, which is good for men's reproductive health.

Peppermint: A major source of cooling, soothing, stomach-settling menthol.

Rosemary: Rich in antioxidants, this tasty culinary spice may help prevent Alzheimer's disease.

Sage: Sage shares much of the medicinal potential of rosemary.

Savory: Europeans add this herb to bean dishes to reduce flatulence.

Thyme: This is one of the best sources of thymol, an antiseptic, stomach-soothing compound that helps prevent the blood clots that cause heart attack.

Mike Scott talks about his run for Orange County School Board District 5 and the journey to becoming the first African-American man elected to the School Board and the youngest Board member in the state of Florida. Mike was born and raised in Orlando to Mike Scott, Sr. (Oak Ridge H.S.) and Diana Smith (West Orange H.S.). Mr. Scott is a graduate of West Orange, and furthered his education at Valencia College and the University of Central Florida, respectively. He has been a member of the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps and is currently a Youth Mentor, Counselor, and Boy Scout Leader in the University of Central Florida's Soldiers to Scholars Program. Mr. Scott is a recipient of the Orange/Osceola Public Defender Community Partner Award and Valencia College’s Student Leader Service Award as former Student Government Association Chief of Staff. Mr. Scott, as a member, received the community service award for past activities with the University of Central Florida’s Men of Integrity, an organization that teaches service first, leadership and community involvement through innovative and collaborative partnerships with multiple organizations.

What is a School Board Member and why are you running for School Board?

To the first part of your question, a school board member is elected by a geographical area to represent those schools, communities and families in that area. Individually, a board member has no authority to make decisions regarding school policy; however, when the board meets the singularly elected board members collectively form the governing body of the school board and they vote and make decisions according to the needs of the districts they represent and the collective good of all students under their care. As to why I am running; there is a lack of communication and understanding from the policies the board enacts to the operational plans the superintendent implements, and ultimately the actions the teachers and staff execute. There is a serious disconnect in what the communities need, versus what is actually offered. The school board today is not reflective of the communities they represent, and oftentimes is not receptive to change or differences of opinion from some of its communities.

Why should someone vote for you over the other two candidates?

As I started to infer from my earlier answer, the school board is a collective and reflective body; and

while there is a collection of thoughts, many people cannot relate to the individual board members or the board as a whole. I make mention of this because I bring a much needed and different perspective to the school board. More so than my counterparts, I have been faced with many adversities as a result of past and current school board decisions as a former student, parent and community educator. When I look at the school board I do not see myself in its reflection, and while my other opponents are good people, they lack specific understanding of the challenges our youth face. I would ask you a question, when you look at the school board and its members and the candidates for the Orange County School Board District 5 race, where do you see your reflection?

What would you do differently if and or when elected?

I would listen, I would listen, I would listen. It is impossible to make decisions for people you represent if you do not communicate with them, and it is impossible to make decisions for people you do not understand. I would establish a regular and consistent flow of communication via standard mail, meetings, Email, phone calls and town halls where the communities set the agenda. I would solicit criticism of my actions as an individual board member; after all you cannot improve upon something if nobody tells you it’s wrong.

How will you implement all of these great ideas you propose? Do you think the other board members will be receptive?

Absolutely, I have past working relationships with some of the current board members and I am confident they are open to change provided they have a means, legally, factually and fiscally to implement that change. I would start with coalition building as I already have done in my nonprofit and expand from there. While grant dollars, programs, new policies,

and procedures work, the first step is engaging our communities, finding where their needs are, and then partnering with them to service those needs through listening and being receptive to constructive criticism.

Can you tell us a little more about your community involvement and how you think it supports your candidacy for the school board?

I am a mentor, and I work with several nonprofits and government agencies to improve the life of not only our youth but also their families, even if they are nontraditional ones. In my nonprofit work, we have developed and fostered relationships with community and business leaders to allow for better opportunities for employment of our youth and parents. I am a lifelong Boy Scout and presently a Boy Scout leader. As a mentor and advocate, we educate

our youth on life skills, cognitive behavior therapy, represent them in court and teach them financial and legal literacy.

Lastly, outside of your community service and mentoring activities, what skills or experience do you possess to be an effective board member, what qualifies you?

I am the Vice President of Operations for Helping All Youth Achieve, a nonprofit that serves over 300 youth and families annually. I have been in government and public service for over 10 years, at several levels. In my current position, I am responsible for maintaining approximately 60 million dollars in government assets; I manage and provide oversight of a $600,000 annual contract budget, and a $450,000 operating and expense budget. I serve many elected officials and constitutional officers here in Orange County. I am intimately familiar with how to accomplish goals when many parties involved may have competing needs, and I work well in finding consensus where many may see none.

Pastor Jonathan L. McKnight Pastor of Sanctuary of Praise Ministries in Orlando

Family, Fun, and FaithYou have consistently provided opportunities for spiritual growth and development through conferences, revivals, and seminars. Tell us about the direction the Lord is taking you in as it relates to meeting the needs of not only the members at Sanctuary of Praise, but also throughout the community.

The most important thing that the Lord has impressed upon me is about unity of the Body of Christ, by examples of leadership becoming kingdom-minded outside of our individual churches. I believe God wants to eliminate the competitive nature of individual ministries and bring about a concerted effort back to winning souls. My mindset now is, I am willing to do whatever I have to do to make us conscious enough to get to God, not just Sanctuary

of Praise, but everyone. When people leave our churches, we need to make sure we have equipped them to get to God. I believe the community

has become so divided because of the silent, competitive nature of ministries. My focus right now is to embrace unity and

not try to build a solo ministry, but to incorporate as many people as we can into the Body of Christ. I believe God is checking our hearts for motives that are malicious, divisive, and selfish. He is building His KINGDOM, and His KINGDOM is greater than Sanctuary of Praise or any denomination. I believe God smiles when His children win other children.

What do you believe the Lord is speaking concerning the structure and order of the family today?

It’s important that we begin to teach family structure. Society has tried to re-define what family structure is. From a spiritual perspective, a lot of our households are not in the proper order. Most of our households are now fatherless. It’s hard to identify with God, the Father when there is not a natural father in the household. When there is no father walking in that role of authority, the

understanding of submission and order is changed in a family. Our roles have changed. There

are mothers having to be fathers and mothers. There are children who

have to be parents. The family needs to go

back to the

Jonathan McKnight, Pastor of Sanctuary of Praise Ministries in Orlando, speaks candidly about the challenges that threaten the stability of the family, and the safeguards necessary to protect it. The once-married, now divorced and single father opens his heart with the intent to enlighten and empower churches and families, as he facilitates the 2012 Family and Prayer Conference.

Page 33: The Latest GospelNOW Magazine

original state of order where the father is the provider, leader of prayer and protector, the mother is that support system, a beam of support that brings the atmosphere of a house, turning it into a home, and the children bring the laughter and preparation for the next generation. The problem that I see is in the area of roles, especially as it relates to discipline. Structure is discipline. Most people don’t like discipline or structure. Most of the time, it goes against what society is saying. The liberalism of the family according to the interpretation of society has caused a conflict against the Word of God. The bible says “Fathers, train up your children and provoke them not to wrath.” We have so many angry children because the only time they get instructions from parents is a corrective, destructive and violent instruction. We need to bring balance back into the family.

How much does the strength and structure of your own family influence your perception and understanding of what the modern family should look like?

The way my parents and my family nurtured me is the most solid thing that I have in my life, outside of my relationship with God. My family is blessed. My father, Bishop James E. McKnight, and my mother, Mother Jessie McKnight taught me the most important structure that I know about family. I saw a father who was home every night, I saw a mother who was home every day. I saw a man and a woman married, raising their children in the principles of God’s Word. I saw a father work two jobs, I saw a mother work two jobs, a father pastor two churches and a mother support him in that role. The most important thing they taught me is that if you are going to be a family, you must pray. They taught me how to live for God. They had me in a safe environment as a child. I was never violated as a child. I never saw my father hit my mother, never saw them yell and fight. They taught me that I have to function in peace. Anything pulling me outside of my peace is not the will of God.

What would you say are the most critical threats against the family and what safeguards should be employed to protect it?

One of the number one threats against the family right now is the attack against the institution of marriage. I think the enemy is trying to re-define what marriage is, when God plainly stated what marriage

is. He said “for this cause shall a man leave his father and his mother and cleave

to his wife,

and the two shall become one. I believe that they become one, they shall be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth. In order to protect the family, I believe we need to leave marriage defined as God established it. We need to continue to believe in the institution of marriage. Marriage is not a bad word. I believe the family can experience the highest form of success when there is God at the head, and the family is walking in the principles of the Word of God. I believe it is crucial for each family member to understand their role and their place, and we function as a unit to support each other. I believe the father provides for his family, the mother takes what is provided (not implying that a mother has to stay home pregnant, barefoot, and cleaning house) and they work together as a unit. As kids, we had chores. We had assignments to assist our mother and our father. As children, we were assets by helping our parents to run the household. I believe families should understand the importance of having fun. I believe there must be a yielding of our hearts to God; then we are able to give our hearts to our marriage and our family. To protect the family, I believe we must employ time-management skills, and teach the family to walk in love, and the importance of planning and investing in strategies to help the family operate according to the Word of God. I also believe that the balance in the first family was disrupted and subsequently interrupted by a voice from outside of the family. It just happened to be a voice that had no family; but instead, had a motive to oppose what God instituted. In order to protect the family, I believe we need to literally keep the voice and the Word of God as the final authority over every outside voice; that includes spiritually, socially, politically, and anything that contradicts what God has said. We sometimes treat God as if He doesn’t understand our dilemmas. We forget that He is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. God completely understands when parents release their kids to go to war and eventually encounter loss. God witnessed loss; but He brought salvation and deliverance out of that loss. We forget that “we have not a high priest who is not touched with the feeling of our infirmities.”

You are a father. What principles are you depositing into your son’s life to help him understand God’s plan for the family?

I teach my son that God is the authority in the earth. I instill in him the importance of reverence and having a fear of God. I teach him honor and respect. I teach

Page 34: The Latest GospelNOW Magazine

him the value of hard work and servanthood. He has learned the importance of prayer. My son still wants me to pray with him before he goes to bed.

How much responsibility rests on the faith community to help develop stability in families and provide support for families?

I think protecting and supporting the family is the number one responsibility of the church. I believe broken families make broken churches. I came from a holistic family environment, but in my own immediate family, experienced brokenness. It is important for the family environment to be whole, because when there is brokenness at home, it fosters dysfunctional fellowship and worship. God re-directed my focus and re-defined growth in my mind. I was never stuck on numbers, but God caused me to see the difference between numerical growth and the development of the people. I focus on the maturity of hearts and methods to help people to evolve to greater levels of spiritual maturity. Many of us have had to experience hard places from time to time; and I teach that maturity and growth can come from a hard place. When we keep our focus on God, transformation takes place, and ultimately, transfiguration. I think it is important for us to continue believing in the family, even when interruption occurs. God witnessed interruption, loss, separation, sacrifice, pain, and shame in His family; yet, it all ended in unity, love, and victory. The first family in the scripture is the greatest example of this. God

gave us biblical examples to help us make it through our own brokenness.

How have you rebounded from your own brokenness?I believe it has been my belief system in who God

says I am. That, along with the support of my family, became my stabilizing force. Had I listened to people who thought they knew…I would have missed God. Families are not exempt from change, pain, brokenness and tragedy. We all need the grace and protection of God.

If there were one message that you felt compelled to convey to families today, what would it be?

God has given me what I believe is the CLUE to a successful marriage and family. We must communicate and commit. There must be love and loyalty. Understanding and unity are a part of the equation; and there must also be excitement and energy for making it work, and keeping it together.

You have a family-focused event coming up that will address some of the issues we’ve discussed. Give us some of the details about the event, and tell us what participants should expect to experience?

It is the Family & Prayer Conference, being held at Sanctuary of Praise at 5600 Westgate Boulevard in Orlando, August 12-16, 2012. The week includes a talent night, bowling, a family forum, and a Prayer Conference with guest speakers, guest artists, workshops, prayer services, and a panel discussion. Canton Jones

Performing LiveSaturday, oct. 13th at The central florida fairgrounds

Gospel R&B singer and producer Canton Jones grew up in a musical family in Deerfield Beach, a coastal town in southeast Florida. As early as the age of five, Jones joined a singing quartet his father formed,

and by age 16, he was making beats for himself and for other local singers. After high school, Jones moved his home base to Atlanta, where he attended Morehouse College. It was there that the singer joined the school's popular glee club, which afforded him a chance to tour extensively and sing for Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, Bobby Jones, and Ray Charles, among others. In the meantime, Jones also began attending Pastor Creflo Dollar's World Changers Church, where he began singing in the choir. During a solo performance in one of the megachurch's services, Jones caught the attention of the congregation's youth pastor, who asked him to help in the youth department. He did, and not long after, he signed an independent record deal with Arrow Records, a church-based label spearheaded by the pastor's wife, Taffi Dollar. His first album, 20 Years 3 Months & 12 Days, came out in 2003, and one year later he completed The Password. His breakthrough came in the summer of 2005 with the release of Love Jones, which made its debut on Billboard's Top Gospel Albums chart at number 11. Jones offered an even more popular follow-up, Kingdom Business, in 2008; the disc shot all the way to the number three slot of the same chart.

The United States Court of Appeal for the Sixth Circuit, by its ruling on June 26, 2012, sent a strong message to lawful permanent

residents who take short trips to the U.S. and spend the majority of their time abroad. The message or ruling in the Lateef v. Holder decision states that if a lawful permanent resident is deemed to have abandoned his/her residency due to long trips abroad, then the Immigration Courts can terminate status with an order of removal. Usually, when a lawful permanent resident is seeking entry into the U.S., the Immigration officer will examine the amount of time the permanent resident has spent abroad. If Immigration officer deems that the permanent resident has abandoned his/her status, then he can take away the green card and refer the case to Immigration Court.

In these types of cases, the government has the burden to prove by clear and convincing evidence that the permanent resident abandoned his or her status. Typically, the government will seek to show the permanent resident lacks family, financial, employment and property ties in the U.S. Additionally, the government will document the lengthy trips abroad and repeated trips abroad which have resulted in short stays in the U.S. Lastly, the government will provide other evidence in the record to document the permanent resident’s intent in maintaining his/her permanent status in the U.S. Lawful permanent resident status may be lost through abandonment, whether intentional or unintentional.

What are some common mistakes that are Red FLaG IndICatoRs that a lawful permanent resident is not living in the U.S. and has abandoned his/her status? here is My List Based on Past and current cLient’s Mistakes:

1. Lawful permanent resident that buys a one-way ticket from the U.S. to destination country abroad (it shows no intent to return to the U.S. within a short period) – there should always be a roundtrip ticket with final destination in the U.S.;

2. Lawful permanent residents who spend 6 months abroad, 1 month in the U.S., 6 months abroad, 1 months in the U.S., - this is a definite red flag to an officer.

3. Lawful permanent residents with no job in U.S. and no lease property or home ownership in the U.S.;

4. Lawful permanent residents who have not filed tax returns in the U.S., but have filed tax returns abroad for income earned abroad; and

5. Lawful permanent residents who take short trips to the U.S. for purposes such as giving birth to a child in the U.S., filing tax returns, doctor visits, attend weddings or funerals and then return to longer time spent abroad.

Remember, as a lawful permanent resident, you MUST be permanently residing in the U.S. and not visiting the U.S. after long trips abroad. The U.S. government and immigration authorities have taken a tougher enforcement position on this issue.

S ome call it crazy, but others call it “kingdom.”

Recently in central Florida, the ministry formerly known as Empowerment shut its doors and merged with the Livingston Street Church of God (commonly known as ‘910,’ which

is the physical address of the church). Bishop Kelvin L. Cobaris, pastor of Empowerment Ministries, was born, reared and received his training at ‘910’ under the leadership of Bishop Thomas E. Chenault. Feeling impressed of the Lord to launch the Empowerment Ministries Church, Bishop Cobaris stepped out in October of 2004 and started the work of educating, equipping and empowering men and women for kingdom service. God showed His approval of the Empowerment Church, as over the span of nearly eight (8) years, the ministry grew by leaps and bounds, impacting families throughout and near the Pine Hills community through love, outreach, and practical teaching.

Contrastingly, the Livingston Street Church of God has been just as impactful with the ministry that has been shared throughout the years. The 1980’s and 1990’s were some of the most memorable years of this church. It has been referred to nationally as one of the most lively and progressive ministries within the denomination of the Church of God. The praise and worship has always been soul stirring and Bishop Chenault’s preaching has remained unparalleled. Bishop Chenault is also responsible for successfully branding the church with the phrase, “there’s no ’10 like 910” through the love that he showed to the students at Jones High School, where he worked as a teacher.

After serving at ‘910’ for more than thirty years and nearing retirement, Bishop Chenault called on his son in the ministry, Bishop Cobaris, to carry out the task of taking the church to the next level. Realizing that ministry is all about building God’s kingdom, rather than building your own, Bishop Cobaris took on the God-sized assignment to serve as Co-Pastor of his home church. Believing that this task was God-ordained, the Empowerment Ministries Church was dissolved and the two (‘910’ and Empowerment) became one on July 8, 2012!!

Since the merger, ‘910’ has been experiencing rapid growth. Bishop Cobaris’ energy coupled with Bishop Chenault’s wisdom is a recipe for successful ministry. The two men and churches working together-- spiritual father and spiritual son, traditional and contemporary-- is a model for churches all over the world.

In October of 2012, ‘910’ will be celebrating ninety (90) years of ministry to the community. The celebration will include a banquet and other festivities, which includes the ‘910’ Reunion Celebration, where there will be a hand-clappin’, foot-stompin’, Holy Ghost good time with the spiritual sons and daughters that have been produced from the ministry.

The Empowerment and ‘910’ merger was smilingly summed up by Bishop Cobaris who said: “in the words of Peaches and Herb, ‘reunited… and it feels so good!!’ If both of my daddies (God and Bishop Chenault) are happy, then so am I. It’s all about the Kingdom!!”
