It’s been weeks since the Lakers beat the Celtics and became

NBA Champions for the second year in a row. I wasn’t happy about it then, and I’m still not happy now. I’m not going to be a sore loser about it or make excuses but let’s be honest, you know as well as I do that the ref-erees were wrong. Yes, I know the final score and that is what matters. However when the Lakers are going to the line more than double the amount of times as the Celtics there is some-thing wrong.

The NBA refs and the World Cup refs must be in cahoots because it was the ref who robbed the USA of a win against Slo-venia. The video clearly shows there was no foul committed by the American players. That “invisible” foul discounted the goal that would have put the USA up 3-2 in the final minutes. Fortunately for the United States soccer team bad calls didn’t cost them the championship.

In American Football news, Commis-sioner Roger Goodell is contemplating ex-tending the regular season from 16 games to 18. It doesn’t seem as if this idea is go-ing over very well with many of the players. More games mean more risk of injury before

even reaching the playoffs. I’m sure I’m not the only fan that would love a longer foot-ball season. But there would be no season without the players. More games equal more revenue. The NFLPA (National Football League Players Association) wants to know if the players would benefit from the money earned in the two additional weeks. I agree, I want com-pensation for two additional minutes of work let alone two weeks. Whatever decisions the Commissioner chooses I

hope it’s as fair as possible. The NCAA made the decision that Reggie

Bush was ineligible for the Heisman in the wake of the USC scandal. Should the Heis-

man Trophy Trust strip Bush of the trophy, it will be awarded to Vince Young. Although I understand the logistics behind such a de-cision, I don’t think it makes much sense. Whether Reggie Bush was technically ineli-gible or not, he still received the most votes because of his performance. He can still say he won the Heisman if they strip him of it or not. Good for Vince Young.

I f Orlando’s Rashad Lawrence had become a depressed, angry teenager, lacking self confi-dence, plagued with dysfunctions like chemi-

cal dependency, learning disabilities, behavioral problems, communication difficulties, or even in-carceration; statistics would definitely support all of this. Studies report that after losing a parent, 85% of children exhibit such symptoms and behaviors. To the contrary, the Olympia High School standout has weathered a storm that would leave any adult rocking and reeling. At the onset of his adolescent years, Lawrence’s mother passed away soon after the birth of his baby sister. Somehow, he managed to take a stance, blast off, navigate his route, and now he’s headed for the end zone at the Big Ten’s Northwestern University. Despite the odds against him, Rashad Lawrence simply kept moving. Ra-shad speaks about his mentors, his motivation, and the momentum that has landed him the no. 13 spot on the Orlando Sentinel’s final Central Florida Top 100 list. - by Rhielle Davis

Gospel Now congratulates you on your recent high school graduation and double congratula-tions for the opportunity that you now have with Northwestern University. Where are your emo-tions right now?

Can’t really put what I feel into any one emo-tion right now. I see it as another step on the way to get to where I want to be.

What was it that helped you to make the final decision to go with NU?

Last summer I visited NU and the coaches seemed to be 100% real. They were really interest-ed in how I could help them as well as how they

could help me. They weren’t like some of the others who seemed like car salesmen, trying to sell me on their school. The NU coaches seemed legit and I felt safe.

Who were the others that approached you? Duke, FAU, FIU, Perdue, Stanford, Vander-

bilt, UCF, and several others.

Now that you’re moving 1100 miles north of your family, what will be your source of motivation?

My personal desire to succeed, knowing that my mom wants me to succeed, knowing that I have people back home who want me to suc-ceed; and even knowing that there are people both here and up there who may not want me

to succeed. All of this works together like one big powerball to motivate me.

After your mom passed in 2004, who became the mentors and models in your life?

My uncle. He’s in prison now; but he took me under his wing. I learned a lot from his bad deci-sions. He showed me a lot, and he says he did it so that I wouldn’t have to. He taught me to be strong. I was 11 when my mom died, and I had to become a man. I had to grow up.

Wide receivers are known for their speed and pass-catching ability. Undoubtedly, you are a man on the move, where does that drive and mo-mentum come from on and off the field?

I think it’s in my family’s veins to just get it done. Both on and off the field, I just stick to it until it’s done.

Since every step is a yard closer to the end zone, share with our readers one step that may take us all closer to our personal end zones.

Make sure you keep going. Don’t ever quit; even when times are hard. My 1st year of football was in the 9th grade when I played JV. I never played Pop Warner, I only played in the neighborhood. I always played Jr. Magic. So, in middle school, I played basketball. When I got to high school, I planned to play basketball; but I tried out for JV football and I made it. I dropped every pass during that entire season; but I never quit. I missed bas-ketball tryouts because of the JV football schedule, and that’s how I ended up here. I would say it was kind of divine. Just don’t ever quit.

Give me a little of your background. How long have you been the pastor?

Hope Church of Orlando has been here for 26 years. My father is the founder of this church. I was almost born in the church. The call of God on anyone’s life is what dictates the path that one should take. So I received my calling years before I accepted it. My

acceptance to the call was in 1989. At that time, I accepted the call to preach, and then I was ordained in 1991. Then I just followed in my dad’s footsteps in terms of caring for the ministry. It took God placing a shepherd’s heart in me to care for the people. That’s kind of how I got to where I am now.

Tell me a little about that calling.Typically when we have these divine

calls with paths we don’t want to travel, we run from them. A calling is a God ordained urge that he places within someone to do a certain task, or to travel a certain course. The task that I was assigned was to preach the gospel of good news. Once I accepted it, then

the clouds of my future started to roll away. See, back at that time, I was in college majoring in Pharmacy. I am a registered Pharmacist. I was touring the country with my sax; I have about 10 CD’s around the nation. But once I accepted my call, then all those other things became secondary to what God told me to do.

What is the focus of your ministry? Our focus here at the church is to

change this community by meeting the needs of the total man. So we try to focus on really addressing the social, economic and spiritual needs. That may be through housing, worship

itself, medical, entrepreneur ventures, and education. We look at the needs of the total man, and we feel God has given us the ability as King’s kids to give a kingdom influence. So we try to influence everything around us for the Kingdom of God. That’s what we be-lieve will make the community a better place, and the world a better place.

acceptance to the call was in 1989. At

Bishop Bishop Allen Wiggins

On a Sunday morning leading all the way to late afternoon, their parking lot is packed! From the

daily charity drives to that fancy hooked up kid’s playhouse, I have been meaning to stop by and pay a visit to the Hope Church of Orlando. So when I had the opportunity to meet with its leader, Bish-op Allen Wiggins, not only was I full of questions, but I was full of excitement. This is an interview about how God can influence Man to influence Community.

Allen WigginsSo you provide all of these services? Housing? Job placement?

Yes, we do it all; either directly or through partnerships. Our newest venture is something called Kingdom Kids Zone, where we have taken one of the houses in our community and turned it into a children’s frat house. They are just having a ball with that! It’s located right in front of the church. This place is run by about 15 teachers that are a part of our minis-try, and this is how they give back to the community. So we have certified teachers that shape the curriculum which is consistent with what we teach in the adult church and they break it down for the kids.

How long has this church been around and how long have you been pastor?

We’ve been here in Washington Shores for 26 years. We started with 9 members, and now we are at about 1500. We started at a house, then we moved to an upper room at the Wilcox Mall. Our next move was to Orange Center Blvd; this was the first church constructed. After that, we moved over to where we are now. I’ve been senior pastor for 9 years now. I was co-pastor 2 years prior to that; Assistant Pastor prior to that, Minister of Music, and Deacon. I kind of assisted my daddy all the way through.

With your church being around for so long, and it being such a big

part of your life, what have you seen change in the community surround-ing the Hope Church of Orlando?

There have been tremendous changes. First of all, at the surface, if you could reflect back even 10 years ago, this area was not a safe place to walk. I believe through the grace of God allowing us to influence the community, now it is a safe place. It is not totally rid of all the things we would like it to be, but it is tremen-dously different. I feel that we have really helped this place not only to

become a beau-tiful place, but also a safer place to live. Secondly, I believe we have really done a good job with “king-dom influence”. Even though we are still a com-muter church, the people in this area

still look forward to seeing us. I got a letter one day from a lady that said we just look forward to hearing the church bells chime at noon. So it’s been little things like that; when you get the feedback from the community that you’re making a difference.

Humor is infectious. The sound of roaring laughter is far more contagious than any cough, sniffle,

or sneeze. When laughter is shared, it binds people together and increases happiness and intimacy. In addition to the domino effect of joy and amusement, laughter also triggers healthy physical changes in the body. Hu-mor and laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your energy, diminish pain, and protect you from the damaging effects of stress. Best of all, this priceless medicine is fun, free, and easy to use.

Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humor lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert.

With so much power to heal and renew, the ability to laugh easily and frequently is a tremendous resource for surmounting problems, enhancing your relationships, and supporting both physical and emo-tional health.

Laughter is good for your health

Laughter relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your mus-cles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after.

Laughter boosts the immune system. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infec-tion-fighting antibodies, thus improv-ing your resistance to disease.

Laughter triggers the release of en-dorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.

Laughter protects the heart. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.

Laughter and humor help you stay emotionally healthy

Laughter makes you feel good. And the good feeling that you get when you laugh remains with you even after the laughter subsides. Humor helps you keep a positive, optimistic outlook through difficult situa-tions, disappointments, and loss.

More than just a respite from sadness and pain, laughter gives you the courage and strength to find new sources of meaning and hope. Even in the most difficult of times, a laugh–or even simply a smile–can go a long way toward making you feel better. And laughter really is contagious—just hearing laughter primes your brain and readies you to smile and join in on the fun.

The link between laughter and mental health

Laughter dissolves distressing emo-tions. You can’t feel anxious, angry, or sad when you’re laughing.

Laughter helps you relax and re-charge. It reduces stress and increases energy, enabling you to stay focused and accomplish more.

Humor shifts perspective, allowing you to see situations in a more realis-tic, less threatening light. A humorous perspective creates psychological dis-tance, which can help you avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Humor and playful communication strengthen our relationships by triggering positive feelings and fostering emotional

connection. When we laugh with one another, a positive bond is created. This bond acts as a strong buffer against stress, disagreements, and disappointment.

Laughing with others is more powerful than laughing alone

Shared laughter is one of the most effective tools for keeping relationships fresh and exciting. All emotional sharing builds strong and lasting relationship bonds, but sharing laughter and play adds joy, vitality, and resilience. And humor is a powerful and effective way to heal resentments, disagreements, and hurts. Laughter unites people during difficult times.

Using humor and laughter in relation-ships allows you to:

Be more spontaneous. Humor gets you out of your head and away from your troubles.

Let go of defensiveness. Laughter helps you forget judgments, criticisms, and doubts.

Release inhibitions. Your fear of holding back and holding on are set aside.

Express your true feelings. Deeply felt emo-tions are allowed to rise to the surface.

Moore-Russell manages to balance politics, public interest, law profession, and parenthood . Orange County’s District 6 Commissioner is an Orlando native, product of Orange County’s public school system, University of South Florida and Florida State graduate, and community advocate whose public interest existed long before her election to the Orange County Commission . Commissioner Moore Russell’s election to the Orange County Commission made history, in that she was the youngest County Commissioner that has ever been elected to serve on the Orange County Commission in charge of a budget exceeding $5 billion and more than 8000 employees . Commissioner Moore Russell’s love for this community is consistently demonstrated through her initiation and involvement in programs like Family Hope Day, Annual Summer Safety Event, Pine Hills Clean Sweep, School Days are Here Again, and Town Hall Meetings and Workshops; all designed to promote community partnerships while empowering citizens and neighborhoods . Commissioner Moore Russell is not only a politician, but also an attorney, wife, and mother . She is married to Anthony K . Russell, Jr . and they are the proud parents of Anthony K . Russell III . YOU MUST BE ONE OF THE HARDEST WORKING WOMEN IN CENTRAL FLORIDA. TELL ME WHAT AN AVERAGE DAY IS LIKE FOR YOU.

It varies . In the morning I’m with my son, getting him ready for school, fi xing lunch, and getting him off ; and then my day starts . I may have meetings with various boards that I sit on, appointments with con-stituents, and I try to make time for a boot camp that I participate in, at least two times a week .

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR YOU TO HAVE SUPPORT WITH A SCHEDULE LIKE YOURS, AND WHAT DOES THAT SUPPORT SYSTEM LOOK LIKE?

Extremely important . There would be no way for me to have a child and do what I do without support . My job is not a 9 to 5, or even a Monday through Friday . I have a supportive spouse; and since I’m from Orlando, I have my mother and my godmother . They all make up my village and I am blessed to have a loving environment where I don’t have to worry about

who is watching my son . He didn’t go to daycare until he was 18 months because of that loving environment . Even now, I don’t have to rush to get to the daycare by 6:00, because of my sup-port system . Matter of fact, my village had input as to how we would manage things with a baby . My husband and I didn’t just have a baby . We sat

down beforehand, as a community with our support system and decided how we would schedule

time for family .

BEFORE YOU WERE ELECTED TO THE ORANGE COUNTY COMMISSION, WAS MARRIAGE AND FAMILY APART OF THE PLAN?

Yes . I wanted to be a wife and mother; and it was an even

greater priority for me than being a successful lawyer or even a public servant . For me, it all just came at once . It’s funny how God does things .

NOW THAT YOU ARE A “MOM,” ARE YOU MORE PAS-SIONATE ABOUT ANY PARTICULAR ISSUE IN REGARDS TO YOUR SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY?

It opened me up to other issues like pre-natal

care for our out-of-wedlock moms and benefi ts for the children . I found myself explaining to our younger mothers that they have options, and I became sort of an advocate concerning issues pertaining to families . Education and programs for the next generation took a greater priority because I want my son to be able to say that “my mom was instrumental in making some things happen .” Public safety at home took on a diff erent perspective . Recognizing that I am now responsible for this other person, I developed a heightened sense of public safety, where I just want families to be safe in their homes and neighborhoods .

I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE IN FULL THROTTLE FOR RE-ELECTION TO YOUR DISTRICT 6 ORANGE COUNTY COMMISSION SEAT. THIS TIME AROUND, YOU ARE MAR-RIED AND A MOTHER; IS THERE ANYTHING DIFFERENT ABOUT THE WAY YOU ARE HANDLING THE CAMPAIGN CONSIDERING THESE DYNAMICS?

It will be a little diff erent . I am prioritizing and planning more . I’m not a “super politician .” Sometimes I have to say no . I can’t attend every event . I realize that I must schedule time for me . In the campaign we do walk every Saturday, and I’m visiting churches on Sunday mornings; but on Sunday evenings, I am at home with my family .

NOW THAT THE FIRST FOUR YEARS ARE COMING TO A CLOSE, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY YOUR GREATEST CON-TRIBUTION TO THE COMMUNITY HAS BEEN?

It has been an interesting four years . My great-est contribution has been my tireless advocacy for the less fortunate; fi ghting to keep programs in place, like after school programs . I have worked hard to keep the issues of poor people in the face of politics .

LOOKING FORWARD, WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH ON BEHALF OF THE CITIZENS IN YOUR DISTRICT?

I plan to fi ght for more job opportunities, and actually bring them to the district . Orange County has been successful at attracting companies; but many of those companies are going to the other side of town . I would like to off er more incen-tives to smaller companies to hire people who already live here, instead of moving everyone in from someplace else . Unemployment in Orange County is very high, and I would like to see more of the people who live here become employed .

FOR THE PERSON WHOSE PLATE IS LOADED LIKE YOURS, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO HELP THEM MAN-AGE IT ALL, WITHOUT LOSING IT ALL.

You need a relationship with Christ . This is what keeps you grounded and reminds you when you are veering from “HIS” purpose . Your relationship with Christ also helps you know who really has your back . People are fi ckle and sometimes only love you for what you can do for them . You need to be able to have that quiet time with “HIM” to get alone and commune with “HIM .” You must stay rooted to family . It is important to remember who brought you to the party or who brought you to the dance . Keep family fi rst . Take care of home and take care of yourself . Force yourself to take care of yourself and be careful of what you eat . Lastly, be careful of who you allow around you . Leave negative people alone .

ommissioner Tiff any Moore Russell serves on the Orlando Metro Plan Board, Orange County Canvassing Board, Orange County Value Adjustment Board, Orange County Community Action Board and the International Drive Improvement District . She is a member of the Florida Bar, Orange County Bar Association, Virgil Hawkins Chapter of the National Bar Association and the Paul C . Perkins Bar Association . Commissioner Moore Russell is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc ., NAACP and serves on the Board of Directors for Living Hope Ministries and the African-American Chamber of Commerce . On November 2, 2010, incumbent Commissioner Tiff any Moore Russell will again appear on the ballot for the Orange County Commission’s District 6 seat .

From Beverly Hills to Manhattan, and all in between, fashion is pas-

sion for most women and a lot of men.

Fashion is all around us and in just about every aspect of our lives.

As I was sitting in a worship service at my church, the Bishop said some-thing that sparked my attention, but it was very key. He said, “how I look, it does matter, how I dress, it does matter, I am a God Representative.”

Should we start a fashion revolution of our own that shouts the Good News and shows taste and modesty?

I found in the bible, women are portrayed as fashionable. In Proverbs, the woman described there makes beauti-ful garments of purple and scarlet. In the book of Esther, it says that she was given cosmetics to beautify herself for the King. The bible says that we have been called "lovely" by God and he GIVES us the

desires in our hearts, then we are given DIVINE permission, as sons and daughters of the KING, to move this industry closer to Christ.

Here Is Some Fashion Food For Thought:

It DOESN’T matter if you’re a fashion forward fashionista or just trying to find something

that fits, what DOES matters is how you look and how you dress…YOU ARE A GOD-RERESENTATIVE!!

hoW lonG have you Been a laWyer and What made you PurSue laW aS your Career?

I have been practicing law for approximately 15 years . It has been a desire that I have had since a young child . I credit my mother with my decision to become a lawyer . When I was younger, I asked her a lot of questions . One day I was asking ques-tions and she told me that I should be a lawyer because I asked so many questions . It stuck . Words are truly powerful and can determine your child’s destiny .

Can you exPlaIn hoW you eStaBlIShed the unIted Front For holIneSS, InC. and What IS the ComPany’S Goal?

United Front for Holiness is an organization, which brings Pastors together of all denominations for the purpose of uniting common beliefs . This organiza-tion is a vision of my mother; Pastor Carrie B . Bryant, that stems from her love for people and a desire to help pastors . As a result of the love she has, and the love the people and pastors have for her, United Front for Holiness was organized as a way for them to unite and come together, fellowship, express

their love for God, one another and to benefit the community in which they live .

What ChurCh do you attend and hoW dId your FaIth helP you BeCome aS SuCCeSSFul aS you are today?

I attend True Holiness Deliverance Tabernacle, Inc . My faith is the reason that I am successful . I truly believe that if God were not on my side, I would not be where I am today .

Can you elaBorate on the mISSIon oF FlorIda’S ChIldren FIrSt, InC. and hoW dId you BeCome a Part oF the movement?

Florida’s Children First, Inc . is a non-profit organi-zation which provides services to youth who are wards of the state by court order . These children are dependent children . The services we provide are legislative services, trying to get legislative changes that benefit those who are currently in the system and those who turned 18 years old and have aged out . We also have a new statewide pro bono proj-ect which is geared towards providing a free legal health check-up to those who are ages 18-25 who have aged out of the dependency system . We are also recruiting attorneys to provide representation to those currently under the court’s jurisdiction ages 16-17 . I am the pro bono coordinator . I recruit attorneys to perform the legal health check-ups, recruit young adults to participate in the program, match the young adult with the attorney and pro-vide assistance to the attorneys, who volunteer their time to this underserved population .

What hIGh SChool and ColleGe dId you attend and Can you exPlaIn hoW eduCatIon Played a role In your lIFe?

I attended Seminole High School in Sanford . I attended the University of Florida and the University of Florida's College of Law . Education plays an important role in my life; without education I could not pursue my dreams and desires . Education gives you options . I have more opportunities because I have a degree .

Can you exPlaIn the nomInatInG ProCeSS to BeCom-InG a CIrCuIt Court judGe and What CredentIalS are needed to Be aPPoInted?

I sit on the 18th Judicial Circuit, Judicial Nominating Commission; which assists by inter-viewing and sending the candidates to the gover-nor . The governor actually makes the selection and

appoints the candidate to serve as judge . You must be a licensed attorney who has practiced for five (5) years and a resident of the circuit to apply for the county or circuit position that has become vacant . The attorney must then submit an application to the commission . Each commissioner reviews the applications and interviews the applicant . Once the applicants are interviewed, then commissioners deliberate and choose three to six (3-6) names to

recommend to the governor . The governor’s office then interviews the applicants and appoints one of the applicants to fill the vacancy .

hoW dId you deCIde to run For eIGhteenth CIrCuIt Court judGe?

The timing seems right . The judge currently hold-ing this seat will not seek reelection, thus leaving a vacancy to be filled by election . It is my desire to serve the residents of the 18th Judicial Circuit, spe-cifically Seminole County residents . My aspiration to serve as a judge is another way for me to con-tinue giving to the residents of the 18th Circuit .

O n June 11, 2010, U .S . Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a proposal to increase the fi ling fees

for immigration applications and petitions by a weighted average of about 10 percent but would not increase the fee for the naturalization applica-tion . The last fee increase by USCIS was in 2008 .

USCIS is a fee-based organization with about 90 percent of its budget coming from fees paid by applicants and petitioners to obtain immigra-tion benefi ts . USCIS’s fee revenue in fi scal years 2008 and 2009 was much lower than projected, and fee revenue in fi scal year 2010 remains low . According to USCIS, the fee increase is necessary to ensure USCIS recovers the costs of it's operations .

USCIS encourages formal comments on the proposed rule through www.regulations.gov. The comment period runs for 45 days, beginning June 11, 2010 and ending July 26, 2010 .

At a time where the country is in a recession and unemployment is quite high, USCIS should not be considering such a fee increase, but should focus on reducing related costs and expenses .

Applicants should keep in mind that fee waiv-ers requests will continue to be considered by USCIS . USCIS has the ability to waive fees on a case-by-case basis for “inability to pay .” In deter-mining “inability to pay,” USCIS offi cers consider all factors, circumstances, and evidence supplied by the applicant .

In a land where Magic dominates the scoreboard and the Magic Kingdom lights up the night sky, a modern day Cinderella rises from the ashes of brokenness; not by the potion of some mag-ical spell, but by the power and providence of the Master and Creator of the universe . With a leap of faith, Central Florida’s

Le' Andria Johnson has “Leaped into Her Destiny,” going from poverty to prominence in a seemingly overnight turnaround of her entire life . Having recently lost her home and needing an “out,” she found an opportunity for transition and life transformation through the gift that God’s Word declares “will make room for you and bring you before great men .” In her initial television performance, the “fl ip fl op, sock wearing,” free spirit tee shirt donning diva quickly found her way into the heart of the judges with her acapella rendition of “This is the Day .” Belting out hair raising, gospel favorites that bear soul stirring melodies and lyrics, testifying of her own pain; week after week, Le' Andria competed for the top gospel spot on one of the nation’s greatest perfor-mance platforms against some of the most phenomenal gospel talent on this side of heaven . Being judged by Tina Campbell of Mary Mary, Yolanda Adams, and Pastor Donnie McClurkin was one thing; but sharing the stage with gospel greats like Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Kim Burrell, Kurt Carr, Karen Clark Sheard, Lala Hathaway and more was another unbelievable experience alto-gether . We caught up with LeAnn, as we aff ectionately call her in Central Florida, at Mama Nems’ upscale soulfood restaurant just two days after her incredible win as BET’s Sunday Best for 2010 .

Congratulations on winning BET’s Sunday Best! Orlando and Gospel Now are extremely proud of you and we are celebrating with you and your entire fam-ily. How in the world does it feel after all that you’ve come through, to be chosen as “The Sunday Best?”

It’s exciting. It’s a great feeling. It pushes me to be stronger and to continue no matter what; and I thank God. It’s a great feeling!

What do you think you gained most from the entire competition?

a higher awareness of my call, my faith was strengthened. If I could put it in a nutshell, I gained more confi dence in God, and I gained strength.

When you rst arrived at the competition, consider-ing the people you were competing against; did you

see yourself as the winner?oh no, not at all. It was very interesting to see

how many people could express their life through song and express their testimony through song. a lot of them had a great testimony, as you could see; but I didn’t see myself winning when I fi rst got there, not at all.

What does your win actually mean for you and your children?

I’ve said this before; the yes inside of you could be the yes for somebody else.

That was profound. Tell us about the experience. There were multiple levels of the competition, what was the actual competition like?

We had to stay in new orleans the entire time. It was good, great actually. It was kind of hard, because we began to be a close knit family. the entire com-petition thing went right out of the window. It went

right out of the door with a lot of us. at that point, it was no more competing; but more supporting each other. that was pretty easy, but it was also somewhat weird. It went from competing to just supporting. they were like, “y’all are supposed to be competing.” We couldn’t because we were like family. It turned from competing to supporting.

Where do you want to go from here? I would like to eventually be able to minister

wherever God would have me to minister, around the world and across the nation. I would love to go to africa.

Why Africa? It’s a place where I’ve never been. this sounds

funny, but I would love to go into the wild where the lions and all of the wild animals are, and just sing. It may sound crazy to some, but that’s what I would love

to do, that’s exciting to me.

You are the winner; that means there is a prize, what did you win?

I won a car, 2010 Ford taurus Sho, and I won a recording contract…and a cash prize.

What can we expect to see and hear from you in the near future?

I will sing my testimony and tell my whole story. many people edit pieces of their life according to what they want us to know. It is my plan to write and sing my whole story, without editing it.

For the aspiring Sunday Best contestant, what advice or encouragement would you o er them?

never give up, never give up, keep pushing. there is something great inside of all of us, and if we want that greatness, we have to push for it. just don’t quit. never give up.

Congratulations on winning BET’s Sunday Best! Orlando and Gospel Now are extremely proud of you and we are celebrating with you and your entire fam-ily. How in the world does it feel after all that you’ve come through, to be chosen as “The Sunday Best?”

If you are looking for a PUBLIC SCHOOL with an academic program infused with Humanities and Fine

Arts throughout the curriculum, a cultur-ally diverse faculty and student body, a safe and nurturing environment in which to achieve aca-demic success, create artis-tic expressions and perfor-mances, a place where every child is a “star,” then look again at the Humanities and Fine Arts Charter School.

HFACS is a free, public, charter school in Leesburg, Florida. It is the only school of Humanities and Fine Arts in Lake County and the State of Florida.

Dr. Shelia Smalley said her dream was becoming a reality when parents lined up to enroll their children in her Humanities and Fine Arts Charter School (HFACS) at Macedonia Church of the Living God in Leesburg Florida.

Approved by the Lake County School Board in 2009, the charter school, which will open August 23, 2010, is a 40 year old dream. According to Dr. Smalley, a former principal and retired associate professor from the Uni-versity of Central Florida, her dream started in a freshman orientation class at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, where she was impressed with the life of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, who opened up a school for African Americans. “In that class at 16 years old, I said to a fellow freshman, one day I will have a school of my own for all children.” Dr. Smalley said, “And a very supportive Board of Directors, consisting of people who I worked with in the past, helped to make my dream a reality."

HFACS will provide quality education for students in kindergarten through 5th grade. HFACS’ curriculum will integrate humani-ties and arts into its core curriculum, it is ac-countable to the Lake County School System

and it must be aligned with the Florida Next Generation Sunshine State Standards and Benchmarks. HFACS will provide Extended Day Program, which will allow parents to bring their kids to school at 7a.m., where they will be under supervised care until 8:25 a.m.. An after school program will be avail-able from 3 – 6 p.m. for $45 per week for each child.

Mission of the School The mission of the Humanities and Fine Arts Charter School is to

• provide quality educational programs for kindergarten through fifth grade stu-dents that promote academic success and creativity; • infuse the Humanities and Fine Arts

throughout the curriculum, through Hu-manities and Fine Arts instruction and opportunities for oratory, musical, artistic, dramatic and dance performances; • empower students to create artistic ex-

pressions; and • maximize the potential of students to

become critical thinkers, independent learners and leaders of tomorrow.

You can receive additional information about what we offer, donating, and register-ing your child by calling (352) 365-6890 or visiting www.humanitiesandfacs.com.
