With summer in full swing, now is the time to take a few days for relaxation. Whether it’s a quick weekend getaway or an extended vacation to a new place, summer is here and enjoying

yourself is a top priority. Now, just because you’re away on vacation does not mean you should neglect yourself or forego your usual beauty regimen. It simply means that now your beauty is quick and on the go! I know you’re probably saying, “I don’t have time to apply makeup, I’m on vacation,” but I’m sure you still want to look and feel fabulous. Doing a few easy things will be more than enough to have you looking your best while you refresh and relax!

For starters, less is more. Sometimes, too much makeup during the summer months can make a woman look older. Give your skin a break and enjoy a facial if you have never tried one. Vacation is a great opportunity for a beauty service like this. A hydrating or detoxifying facial is a great treatment to give your skin some much needed “TLC.” Facials leave your skin fresh and glowing. Often times, your skin’s natural radiance comes through, so the need for foundation makeup isn’t necessary. With hot and humid temps, your usual cream or liquid foundation is a bad idea. Instead, using a small amount of tinted moisturizer or powder bronzer will give your skin the perfect finish it needs. Sun protection will be mandatory, so choose primers with SPF or a matte powder with SPF to keep a beautiful rejuvenated glow!

Often times, when we take vacations we use it as a chance to eat whatever we want and drink whatever we want. If you are renewing your body from day to day fatigue and stress, then focus on getting your balance with the foods and fluids you intake; it’s better for your overall skincare when you are able to flush out unhealthy toxins.

Also try a new cream blush or lip color. I love cream blush during the summer. A beautiful peach or terracotta shade is just gorgeous. It’s just the added touch you need to give you a peachy bronze summertime glow!

Lastly, as you’re traveling on your vacation this summer, stay moisturized. To keep skin hydrated while flying, I always apply mineral hydrating sprays. These are the best skin refreshers, they add just the right amount of moisture to the skin, and absorb quickly. Spray before the flight, during and after, and your skin will thank you!

the road to success may be a lonely road, but i am committed to the journey.”

generally speaking, it seems like people who are destined for greatness are genuinely embraced by only a select few. but, now that i think about it, i believe god made it that way on purpose. the fewer hands that are allowed to touch you while you are in the success incubator, the fewer opportunities for you to be tainted by the virus called mediocrity. the virus called mediocrity is dangerous because it is the precursor for a disease called average.

i do believe that when we are strong enough, he actually allows us to be touched by the disease called average, just to see if we will simply succumb to it or fight to overcome it. it is a combination of our will, connected to his word that empowers us to be successful in life.

Most people don't fight the disease called average because they don't know the symptoms. when we identify the symptoms we are better equipped to overcome them.

SYMPTOM 1- being overly concerned about the opinions of people. the masses will always have opinions. but the opinions that matter are god's and the people who are genuinely (not selfishly) vested in seeing your success.

SYMPTOM 2- giving up during periods of struggle. struggle is inevitable. it provides the resistance that helps you develop an immunity to average. embrace it, struggle is actually good for you.

SYMPTOM 3- an inability or unwillingness to go the extra mile. Dreamers generally work harder, stay up later, and do more to see their dreams come to pass. the good news is success is reaching for you. the question is “are you willing to do what is necessary to reach it?”

one final note- People often talk about keeping balance in your life as you pursue success. Most often when they use it, they are trying to imply that we should never let any area of our life go lacking. the reality is, that is not possible. balance is not when things don't go lacking. balance is the ability to identify and adjust accordingly when they are. to everyone who is reading this article... success is only a push away. it takes the same amount of effort to turn around, give up, and go back as it does to push just a little further to reach your goals. so go ahead, give it that one last push and MAKE IT COUNT!!!

The race may have changed, but the game remains the same. With an unquenchable desire to contend for the

opportunity to continue serving in Florida’s Legislature, House District 39 Representative, Geraldine Thompson, is leveraging for greater influence by running to represent constituents of Florida’s Senate District 12. Representative Thompson briefly interrupts her campaign schedule to share with GospelNOW, the passion fueling her purpose and the values that lend strength to her stride.

You have successfully served the constituents of Florida’s House District 39 since 2006 as Orange County’s first African-American female to represent the district. What prompted your decision to enter the Senate race for District 12?

I am running for State Senate District 12 in order to continue my work to preserve and enhance public education in the state of Florida. As Florida works to attract businesses to the State, it is important to produce a well-prepared and trained workforce to fill the employment needs of corporations. These workforce needs can only be met with adequate investment in public education. I am also committed to continuing to work for job creation as I did through my support of Sun Rail and the construction of the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center, which will spur the economy and put residents to work.

In the interest of the constituents of District 39, you served on several committees dealing with the economy and education. What difference do you believe your presence on these committees has made, and where do you intend to serve in the Senate?

I served as a member of the Federal Affairs, K-12 Appropriations, Business and Consumer Affairs Committees and Ranking Democrat on the Committee on Economic Affairs. The Federal Affairs Committee focused on the relationship between the state of Florida and the Federal Government. The Republican majority on the Federal Affairs Committee was generally not supportive of initiatives of the Federal Government. I advocated on behalf of the Federal Government regarding the benefits that Floridians would receive from the Affordable Health Care Act and Environmental Protection standards. As a member of k-12 Appropriations, I advocated for adequate funding for Florida public schools

and helped to maintain funding for a number of mentoring and intervention programs. As a member of the Business and Consumer Affairs and Economic Affairs Committees, I supported the Economic Gardening Program which was administered by Orlando’s Black Business Investment Board to benefit businesses throughout the State. I also supported a fair immigration policy for undocumented workers in Florida, similar to that recently purposed by President Obama.

The importance of a quality education is not merely a professional pursuit; but rather, a personal platform for you. Why?

My mother earned a Teacher’s certificate and taught school in the 1950’s in rural Mississippi. She was my first teacher. Before I entered a traditional school or classroom, I was skilled at reading and writing. I loved school because it was a place where I enjoyed great success. My love of education continues to this day. Though I come from a single parent home and what some would consider an underprivileged background, I have been able to accomplish many things because of my academic training and ability. Some older members of my family who were required to work in the fields in Mississippi never learned to read or write. I was their scribe and often read correspondence that they received, and drafted written responses for them. I always believed that if these family members had been able to get an education, their lives would have been different. I believe others can achieve as I did if given the opportunity to acquire a quality education. This motivates me to work to assist as many as possible to obtain an education.

What do you believe needs to happen academically and economically in order to minimize the disparities that exist within the classes and races of our state and nation?

Experience has shown that socio-economic standing is one of the greatest predictors of academic achievement. Privileged Americans can afford private tutors and academic enrichment activities for their children whereas impoverished parents can ill afford to provide their children such advantages. Many low income parents do not have the educational backgrounds needed to assist their children. Recent trends within ethnic communities where disadvantaged youngsters are paired with accomplished adults from their culture and backgrounds are yielding tremendous results in terms of high school completion and college enrollment. Additionally, racial minorities need a greater

understanding and appreciation of their history and background. This will build self-esteem and greater confidence in their abilities to achieve. Many mentoring programs also provide financial assistance which is very important in eliminating achievement gaps and racial disparities.

How difficult has it been to promote the interests of your constituents in a Republican-dominated House, and do you see the journey becoming more or less difficult in the Senate?

During my tenure in the Florida House of Representatives, I have been one of 39 Democrats in a body of 120 members. As a member of a super minority, it has been difficult to get legislation passed. The Florida Senate has 40 members and projections are that, with more Democrats being elected in 2012, 18 of the 40 members will be Democrats. This increase in the number of Democrats will mean that Democratic initiatives will be more successful. I expect to have greater influence as a legislator in the Florida Senate.

In lieu of the “voter-suppression” laws that are now in effect in Florida, what efforts are being made by your campaign to educate and empower voters concerning their rights and responsibilities?

I held a town hall meeting in the Fall of 2011 to educate Central Floridians regarding changes in election laws and efforts to suppress the vote of ethnic minorities in 2012. I stressed during the town hall meeting that the Tea Party and Republicans throughout the Country want to prevent President Obama from being elected to a second term. Therefore, they are purging the voter rolls, making it harder for people to register to vote and harder for them to actually cast their ballots. I urged town hall participants to update their signatures, register family and church members to vote and to not be intimidated or discouraged. The town hall meeting was held at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church and attracted nearly eight hundred people. Segments of the town hall meeting will be aired during a documentary which will be aired on CNN on July 15.

What contribution(s) to House District 39 are you most proud of?

After the election of President Barack Obama, I worked with developer, Bob Mandell and other private citizens, and arranged for two classrooms of Jones High School American History students to attend the inauguration of the United States’ first African American President. Working with AMVETS Post 30, I provided $20 gift cards for 100 children during Christmas. I was also a major

supporter of Sun Rail and the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center which will put many residents in District 12 to work. Most importantly, I worked to increase the representation of African Americans in the legislature and Congress while others like my opponent and her husband were working with the Tea Party and getting paid to block more Democrats from being elected in Florida. Orlando has had one African American in the Florida House for the past 30 years. Today we have two African American House Seats.

What are your ambitions and objectives for state Senate District 12?

I will work to create jobs and improve public education as Senator for District 12.

The race for the state Senate District 12 seat is being closely watched and carefully scrutinized. How would you like to be perceived when this race is over?

After the race for Senate District 12, I want to be perceived as a genuine Democratic candidate who is committed to the improvement of the community, rather than someone who is willing to be a puppet for the Tea Party. I want voters to know that I am a well prepared and experienced individual who presented factual information that they could use to make a decision regarding who they can trust and who can best represent them in the Florida Senate.

As the wife of the Honorable Judge Emerson R. Thompson, Jr., a mother, and grandmother; how involved is your family in your campaign, and how do you maintain the balance between your political, public, and personal life?

Being a legislator is a challenging position. The support of family and friends gives me the encouragement and reinforcement I need to get the job done. My duties are scheduled to provide time for family events and commitments. My husband and I enjoy time together at meals, church, conventions and social functions. A strong family, spiritual, and community life gives me balance. My four granddaughters live in Tallahassee as well as my two oldest children. When I am working in the Capitol, after hours, I attend the girls’ school and athletic functions. My oldest granddaughter will attend law school at FSU in September. This summer, she is with me serving as field director for my senate campaign. I was recently in Tampa for the Florida Democratic Convention where I was elected as a Delegate to the Party’s National Convention that will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina in September. While in Tampa, I stayed with my youngest daughter who lives there. My family and I really enjoy each other’s company and we make a point to get together.

This Mother's Day witnessed the dedication of an open lot at 29th Street and Rio Grande Avenue in Orlando, as the mother, grandparents, and sisters of Terra Dyer stood alongside community leaders,

pastors, businesses, supporters and friends. The field, located directly behind the spot where Terra Dyer was inadvertently killed instantly in a storm of bullets on March 29th, 2012, is the site of what will become the most recent addition to the Holden Heights community.

The groundbreaking was led by Orlando City Commissioner Samuel Ings, Bishop Allen Wiggins of The Hope Church, Charles Walsh, African American owner of The Right Fuel Service Station (who is also donating the land), the family of Rebecca Rae, of Air, Water and Light Technologies (who is painting a wall mural of Terra), and ESSENCE Magazine Co-Founder, Jonathan Sebastian Blount.

Three days prior to the slaying of Terra, Blount found himself hospitalized after being attacked, beaten and robbed less than 100 yards from the exact same location where Terra was slain. Violent crimes in and near the exact location have garnered the attention and commitment of Orlando’s Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The Terra Dyer Community Resource Park will contain a digital computer facility, tutorial services, mentoring, parenting and behavioral modification courses and other life skills enhancement programs, all made possible by the generous donations of a collaboration of businesses, non-profit agencies and local residents. Led by Richard Jones, manager of the Princeton Street Wal-Mart, Nike, Right Fuel, Air Water and Light, area businesses and concerned citizens are donating games, playground items and the like.

The City of Orlando is standing in support of the Terra Dyer Resource Park initiative by partnering with event organizers to develop and implement long-term solutions and policing strategies for the Holden Heights community. Orange County Commissioner Tiffany Moore-Russell and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs have also pledged their support, along with media outlets WESH/CW 18, Big 810 's "The Don Miller Show," 1680AM's "Lady D's Caribbean Affair Connection Gospel Show" and "Back 2 Basics."

The final bell rings on the last day of school, the kids run out of their classrooms anticipating

an endless amount of fun from swimming in the community pool, and summer camp and/or traveling all over the world visiting family and friends begins. The summer represents the freedom from homework and teachers, as well as a transition from one grade to the next, or a new school and/or moving out of our parent's comfortable nest.

Many of us stress during the summer, because we try to make sure that our kids stay mentally and physically stimulated throughout the summer, without breaking the budget. A few weeks of sitting around the house begins to wear out its welcome very quickly as you watch your grocery bill gradually increase. Creating summer fun does require a little planning, but it can be accomplished when you focus on creating memories versus putting your kids somewhere to pass the time away. I do understand camps and amusement carry a price tag, but many of our most cherished memories were free. No matter our situation, we can always create memories that our kids will never forget. Here are a few suggestions that can jump start you down the road of memory lane.

Keep it Simple• Mini Get-A-Ways or Day Trips - Break up the

monotony of summer by going somewhere once or twice a month.

• Fun at the park - Whether it’s a picnic or playing on the playground, for parents who are usually busy, this time with your kids with no distractions will mean the world.

• Camping - Excluding the cost of equipment, communing with nature can slow the pace down for the family and force you to reconnect.

• Outdoor activities - From fishing to catching fireflies at dusk or sand castles on the beach, can create memories that cannot be replaced.

Sometimes, memories are not always what we do for ourselves, but what we do for others. Research has proven that helping others intrinsically makes us feel better about ourselves, so teaching our child to give can directly affect how they see themselves. As parents, we try to teach the importance of giving and sharing; but we think along the lines of sharing a toy or a pencil.

After talking to a 9-year old, she said that she wanted to fix the hunger situation that plagues our society (check next month's issue for details). Although young, she sees that the world needs to be fixed, and where she wants to help. Hopefully, these ideas will be a great starting point for changing the lives of others.

Little Hands in the Community• What to do? - Find something that your

child is really interested in and can actually participate in. More importantly, make sure it is age-appropriate.

• Keep it simple if you create something - If the project is too complicated, your child will lose interest.

• Passion - Make sure you nurture their passion, and do not allow your passion to overwhelm your child.

The summer may end, but the spirit of giving does not, and giving your child these experiences could have a ripple effect for generations to come. So, make sure you take plenty of pictures, and before the summer ends, dedicate a few hours before school starts, and review them with your child. The time spent to organize the events of the summer with the family can create the memories of a lifetime.

many times will need to be five to seven times that which is required for maintaining health. Depending of course on the condition and severity of it, approximately three months of sustained high dosages is usually required before the body begins to heal itself. Remember to add 1 month for each year you have been ill. However, we recommend having a consultation with a licensed practitioner for safety and best results.

How Soon Should Results Occur?It's impossible to give an exact answer. There

are many variables involved, such as severity of the problem, assimilation and digestion, quantity of herbs consumed daily, stress, eating habits and more. However, someone with problems such as constipation or blood sugar imbalances will often get results quickly and often times within a day. While someone with problems such as poor eyesight, joint pain and more may not feel any differences for weeks or more.

What Will Happen If I Discontinue Taking My Prescription Drugs?

Herbs are a slow and safe way to build and maintain health. Do not discontinue taking drugs you are dependent on. Always consult with your physician as you gradually decrease drug dosages and frequency of herbs.

When Is The Best Time To Take Herbs?Since herbs are food, you can take them

whenever you desire. Most people take them 30 minutes before meals to prevent the dilution of digestive enzymes. Others on a busy schedule take them first in the morning and last at night. Herbs for cleansing and insomnia are best taken at night. Appetite suppressants and blood sugar-balancing herbs are best taken 15 to 30 minutes prior.

Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils. Essential oils have been around since ancient times when monks distilled herbs, using them for medicinal purposes. Listed below are some of the more commonly used oils and their properties:

LAVENDER: Antibiotic, antiseptic, disinfectant, anti-depressant, sedative, detoxifier, calming, skin healing, stimulating. If you have only one essential oil in the house make sure it is lavender. It has the most wonderful healing properties, especially with burns, and it is a wonderful multi-purpose oil.

EUCALYPTUS: Refreshing, antiseptic, stimulating, cooling, anti-inflammatory.

TEA TREE: Antiseptic, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, skin healing, decongestive.

LEMON: Antiseptic, anti-bacterial, cooling, uplifting, refreshing, astringent.

ROSEMARY: Invigorating, stimulating, uplifting, helps respiratory and muscular ailments.

HOME HINTS All-purpose Spray: In a 500 ml spray bottle filled with water,

add a total of 10 drops of essential oils such as lemon, lavender or eucalyptus. You can use a blend of the oils (lavender and eucalyptus together is a nice blend) or individually.

This spray can be used to wipe kitchen benches, baby’s highchairs, bathrooms and toilets. In addition, this spray can be used in the air. The oils deodorize the air instead of masking the odors, especially around the sick or convalescent.

Toilets: To keep toilets clean and germ free, simply wipe bowl and seat with vinegar. Pour half a cupful into bowl as well. Leave overnight. Rinse and wipe over with all-purpose spray. A couple of sprays towards the ceiling before leaving the toilet will disperse a fine mist that will coat the seat, door handle and all the surfaces you touch, helping to retard the spread of bacteria. Put one drop of lavender or lemon onto cardboard toilet roll to give room a nice fragrance.

Kitchen: To keep fridges smelling fresh after washing, put 3 drops of lemon oil in the final rinse water. Keep an open container of baking soda in the fridge to absorb odors.

To remove the pesticide residues from fruit and vegetables, combine two tablespoons of vinegar to one liter of water. Soak fruit and vegetables for five minutes. Rinse.

Laundry: To give clothes or sheets a nice scent, try any of the following:

•Put 2-3 drops of essential oil in the final rinse cycle of the washing machine.

•Put two drops of oil onto a clean hanky and place in dryer for the last five minutes of the cycle.

Tea-towels and dish cloths are known for harboring harmful bacteria, and normal machine washing does not destroy these germs. To kill the microbes that accumulate on them, soak overnight in a bowl of boiling water to which you have added one drop of lavender, eucalyptus, tea tree or lemon essential oil. Wash as normal.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY TIPS Headaches: Rub one drop of neat lavender on each temple and massage gently.

Cuts and Grazes: Add one drop of lavender to a cup of warm water. Dip clean cotton square into the water and clean wound gently. Put one drop of neat lavender onto band aid and cover wound. This fights infection and promotes healing.

Tired and Aching Feet: 5 drops of lavender into a bowl of very warm water which contains flat, round pebbles. Rub feet over pebbles for 10 minutes.

Heat Exhaustion: Apply neat eucalyptus or lavender to the temples and back of neck and massage gently. Breathe deeply. (Be careful not to get any in the eyes)

Fever: To a bowl of lukewarm water, add 2 drops each of lavender and eucalyptus. Sponge patient down with this frequently.

Colds: Make up a blend of 10 drops each of lavender, eucalyptus and tea tree.

•Babies: Place one drop of this blend on a clean hanky and place near baby’s head. This will promote sleep. You can also add one drop of this blend to baby’s bath, and the vapors may help to clear the head.

•For children over one year old, place 2-3 drops of blend in the bath.

•Adults: Place 5-6 drops of the blend in a bowl of boiling water. Place head over bowl, then cover head and bowl with a towel. Breathe in the vapors for 5 minutes. Place 2-3 drops of blend in a clean handkerchief to inhale during the day.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Symposium on Job Clubs and Career Ministries

held in Orlando, Florida recently, brought to the forefront the importance of churches and ministries working together to reduce unemployment in communities by helping individuals to become better qualified applicants in today’s competitive job market. Engaging, equipping, and empowering church members and community residents are the goals of employment assistance programs in faith-based organizations, while personal and professional counseling also play critical roles in preparing program participants for successful employment. Guest panelists, including a special appearance by U.S. Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis, presented innovative perspectives on how to “get America back to work.”

While individuals are “in between successes,” well-rounded programs like, Workforce, the Corporation for National and Community Service, AmeriCorps’ VISTA, and SeniorCorps’ RSVP, meet immediate financial and social needs of prospective employees while providing workshops, internships, and volunteer opportunities to help welfare recipients in their transition, aid veterans in job training and placement, assist in re-employment connections for the laid-off, and equip ex-offenders in their pursuit of quality employment opportunities. In addition to the conversation regarding developing and strengthening the skill-sets of the unemployed and underemployed, faith-based organizations were also encouraged to take advantage of available funding and human capital resources to start up programs and enhance existing programs by engaging the community and addressing today’s unemployment issues.

When you are feeling your lowest, I’m sure you can’t imagine one thing to be grateful for. When you think you are deprived, your feelings and thoughts revolve around what you don’t have. You may not believe you deserve for good things to happen to you. Being

grateful and thinking along the lines of the good that is in your life brings more good to you. Admit it, even you are sick of hearing you whine. It gets you nowhere and it just brings more negativity upon you.

Why not give gratitude a try? Look around you and notice the good that is in your life. Even if it isn’t perfect, acting “as if” will bring you immeasurable things. We must be grateful for and appreciate the things we do have before more will be given to us. Say thank you for what you do have. If you concentrate on finding the good in every situation you encounter, you will find a life filled with gratitude and wonder. You have nothing to lose, so why not?

If you don’t know what to be grateful for, be grateful for everything. Everything presents an opportunity for us to be grateful. It is an opportunity to learn and to grow. When you look at the things in your life, even if they do not measure up to what you perceive as perfect, be grateful. Appreciate what you do have. Pretend, fake it, force it if you must. It may not seem logical to you, it may not seem practical, but you will start to see changes. Your attitude may be the first to change. You will start to accept what you do have. You will start to act “as if.”

If you expand your thinking in gratitude, it will boost your well-being. It is the forgotten factor in your happiness. It means taking nothing for granted. Be thankful that you woke up in the morning and have another day before you with limitless opportunities. Once you make a habit of looking at things and being grateful for them, it will help you to begin receiving the abundance that you deserve. It will open you up to the fullness that life offers you to be a part of.

Gratitude seems to be the secret that successful people have, that the rest of us don’t. But it doesn’t need to remain that way. Gratitude is a very powerful force. After you accept what you do have, and feel gratitude for it, everything will change. Things that you need will come to you. You have practiced and acknowledged feeling grateful for what you do have. That will free you and bring better to you because you have cleared the way for more. Whenever you encounter a problem, summon up gratitude. There are lessons to be learned everywhere. Be grateful for the problem and the lesson that you will learn.

You may have gone without, you may be deprived of certain things, and you may have difficult circumstances and feel as if you have nothing. Accept what you do have. Be grateful for what you do have. It doesn’t mean that is what you will always have. It just means that where you are today is where you are supposed to be. Before you can get more, you must be grateful for what you have right now. Make it a point to write down three things you are grateful for in your life every night. It will open a path for more to come.

Be aware of your feelings and never believe that all you have is all you can have. Make awareness a goal. You were destined for great things. Believe that is true. Be aware that thinking alone is not enough. Act as if what you believe will come to you once you are grateful for what already is. It’s the law of the universe.

For some, Victoria Siplin’s race for the state’s District 12 Senate seat appears to be a family affair, with her husband, veteran Senator Gary Siplin being her

predecessor. However, for state Senate hopeful, Victoria Siplin, it’s more of an affair of the heart, a continuum of compassion…a call to care. If you haven’t been the recipient of school supplies in one of their back-to-school drives, or a guest at one of their Thanksgiving dinners, you probably know someone who has. The Siplin’s uncommon demonstration of compassion for their neighbors and constituents is the motivator and qualifier for Siplin’s race to represent District 12. An orphaned immigrant since the age of 3, Victoria Siplin’s exposures and experiences are the reasons she is willing to pick up the baton and continue the race. Between placards and yard signs, appearances and programs, Victoria Siplin takes a brief moment to share with GospelNOW her purpose for running, and what she proposes to accomplish when she reaches her destination.

Your husband, veteran state Senator Gary Siplin, has held the district 19 Senate seat since 2002, which primarily covers the same region that you are vying to represent. What is the motivation for your pursuit of this seat?

For the past 12 years my husband and I have what we call a political ministry based on Luke 6:38 [Give, and it will be given to you], to serve the people politically. We have been and will continue to fight to restore civil rights, assist with education, provide free Internet services, computers, school supplies, backpacks, fight for the elimination of the FCAT, and push for creating jobs and bringing back the bullet train.

What was it about your early exposure to politics that inspired you to become engaged in community service?

Coming to this country at the age of 3, as an orphan, I was exposed to politics while I was in high school and received the opportunity to work in the Florida Senate with the 1st African American male and female senators. The time that I spent with Senator Carrie Meek inspired me politically as I watched her fight and be a voice for her community. In addition to that, I’m inspired by the peace you receive when assisting people improve their lives.

In the event you are elected to represent district 12, what issues do you intend to initially undertake on behalf of your constituents, and on what special interest committees do you plan to serve?

I believe that I will be elected and I will work to create jobs, increase funding to education, health care and teachers’ pay. Florida should be a bright shining light in the Country; yet we lag behind in many areas such as job creation, education test scores, and innovative and exciting approaches to our problems. Businesses fight workers. Unions fight businesses. Republicans fight Democrats. That is stalemate. We need to work together.

Some suggest that you lack the necessary experience to represent a district in Florida’s Senate. What do you consider to be your primary qualifications for candidacy?

They said the same thing about John F. Kennedy. They said the same thing about Barack Obama. These leaders did not have the “leadership experience” that some people believed they needed; yet they lead by example, not by what “insiders” believe they should do. Many people who say that have fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear holds us back from new ideas and fresh approaches. Yet, for those who still need more, I would say that I have over 12 years of productive services in the district and with the Florida Senate.

Your experience with teen girls demonstrates your genuine interest in their success. What advice would you give to young women who are considering a career in politics?

Volunteer and become intimately involved with the community.

On June 15, 2012, U .S . Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and President Obama announced that certain young people who were brought to the

United States as young children, who do not present a risk to national security or public safety, and meet several key criteria will be considered for relief from removal from the country or from entering into removal proceedings . Those who demonstrate that they meet the criteria will be eligible to receive deferred action for a period of two years, subject to renewal, and will be eligible to apply for work authorization.

Under this directive, individuals who demonstrate that they meet the following criteria will be eligible for deferred action, on a case-by-case basis AND can apply for work authorization in the U .S . if they meet the following criteria:

1. Came to the United States under the age of sixteen;

2. Have continuously resided in the United States for at least five years preceding the date of this memorandum (June 15, 2012), and are present in the United States on the date of this memorandum (June 15, 2012);

3. Are currently in school, have graduated from high school, have obtained a general education development certificate, or are honorably discharged veterans of the Coast Guard or Armed Forces of the United States;

4. Have not been convicted of a felony offense, a significant misdemeanor offense, multiple misdemeanor offenses, or otherwise pose a threat to national security or public safety;

5. Are not above the age of thirty.

Only those individuals who can prove through verifiable documentation that they meet these criteria will be eligible for deferred action and work authorization . Individuals will not be eligible if they are not currently in the United States and cannot prove that they have been physically present in the United States for a period of not less than 5 years immediately preceding June 15, 2012 . Illegal immigrant children won't be eligible to apply for this benefit of deferred action and work authorization until they turn 16, but the officials said younger children won't be deported either .

This policy will not lead toward citizenship, but will remove the threat of deportation and grant the ability to work legally, leaving eligible immigrants able to remain in the United States for an extended period . The use of deferred action confers no substantive right, immigration status, or pathway to citizenship . Deferred action means DHS will temporarily halt any removal (deportation) proceedings against you for

a certain period of time (a sort of temporary deportation waiver) .

For young adult immigrants, this new policy gives them an opportunity to further their education or work skill since work authorization will grant them a social security number for enrollment in college and other certificate programs . Currently, undocumented young immigrants cannot attend college or certificate programs since most do not have a social security number . The U .S . will benefit from this policy because college enrollment may increase, military enrollment may increase, and various revenue streams such as car sales and home sales may increase with young adults acquiring purchasing power through working and obtaining social security numbers .

While this guidance takes effect immediately as of June 15, 2012, USCIS and ICE expect to begin implementation of the application processes within sixty days . So, right now there is no process set out where eligible applicants can apply for deferred action or work authorization; however, the application process will be forthcoming . Also, there has been no indication as to how long the process will take for an eligible immigrant to obtain work authorization .

For individuals who are in removal proceedings and have already been identified as meeting the eligibility criteria and have been offered an exercise of discretion as part of Immigration and Custom Removal (ICE) ICE ongoing case-by-case review, ICE will immediately begin to offer them deferred action for a period of two years, subject to renewal .

Although President Obama has been criticized for implementing this policy to gain political momentum among the Latino and immigrant voters, this initiative is the step in the right direction for our country to retain educated young adults in a time where we need skilled and educated workers .
