MICHAEL OLIVERIPhotography was not the initial path

Michael Oliveri set out on, instead directly out of high school he enlisted with the United States Navy. He was later de-ployed to the Northern Arabian Gulf.

Taking pictures of the various ports in which his vessel docked, his love for producing impactful images grew even further. He later realized that the more he took photos of people, the more appreci-ation he had for the art of photography. This realization was an epiphany for Michael and after six years in the military he was finally able to begin his journey of conveying feeling through imagery.

He attended the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara and upon graduation worked closely as an assistant to celebrity photographer John Russo. This gave him the knowledge and ability to fine tune his craft, step out on his own and create incredible images.

editorletter from the

There is one thing people who live in LA know—it is more often than not, beautiful. The days are warm, and with luck, the nights temperate. That is why one night in late November we took to the streets with actress Jackie Cruz, against the backdrop of Santee Alley—Because we could.

It’s always been an odd connection, the so-called Hollywood Connection, because other than Paramount Pictures, none of the studios are in LA. But that connection is real. Hollywood, by that we mean the concept of Hollywood does exist and has always existed. Fashion designers have always looked at film for inspiration—just like those of us in the magazine business. The hat story (on page 88) acknowledges people like Audrey Hepburn and Bette Davis in Now, Voyager. Stars who wore hats. Fun, iconic and very photographable, hats are the perfect prop.

Around our sleek, modern water cooler there is a lot of discussion about print versus digital. Personally, the digital experience of certain magazines, (Esquire, Wired, the missing-in- action Project magazine) is a game changer. Print is static, it’s a destination, not a journey unlike the evolving world of digital publications. But, and this is a big but, the print experience is very real. Nearly 300 years old, the printed magazine is durable and without question unique. And there has always been a certain glamor attached to magazines and the good news is, that still exists.

Ad pages for men’s magazines grew 13% in 2013.

The infamous September issues of fashion magazines required weight lifting spotters and they too were up over 13%. Somebody out there is reading magazines. If you’re reading this one now, enjoy our product-filled Holiday issue!

D: What is your hat style?N: I take aspects of traditional

hat-making and implement in my style. Whether it’s like by distressing or adding turquoise or ornaments that I found. It’s sort of like a psychedelic approach to hat making. Formally I think that a lot of the elements are classic and haven’t been changed for years and years and years. And you know, it’s kind of adding my touch to it. A sort of vagabond, bohemian, gypsy, psychedelic sort of...D: Experience?

N: Yeah, like experience to the thing so it just makes the hat a little bit more unique. D: You said you sort of fell into hat making because you studied environmental science. How so?

N: Well, it’s like I’d always been weirdly, whether it’s consci-entiously or subconsciously, in-volved in fashion or in clothing. However you’d say it. My father worked in advertising and was a model and he’d come back from his trips with a lot of clothes. And I would take those when I was really young and alter them with my seamstress and add buttons and accoutrements that I’d found. [This was] in the Southwest of France where I grew up. I’d wear those, always wanting unique pieces for myself. That was at a really early age. I went to school and trained in environmental science and sustainable development but had always, on the side, been constructing or alter-ing these garments more or less. Then when I got out, I worked for a couple of designers in New York and in LA and did a bunch of odd jobs. And environmental science... [well] the environment is something very close to my heart and I’m always aware about whether it’s dealing with overpopulation or conservation issues but I always found myself gravitating towards clothing you know. It’s what inspired me and fueled me. Then I met somebody who was an old cowboy and a hat maker. I was just walking down the street and saw this guy wear this amazing hat and I asked him where he got it and he told me he made it. That’s kind of how I got into hat making. I’d had the training in [things] like using industrial sewing machines and putting parts together and cutting and sewing. But this is a lost art so there’s not a lot of people who know

how to really do this and so I felt super fortunate to get the doors to that world open to me. I learned how to block and how to make a hat and how to pounce and all the ins and outs and the secrets of hat mak-ing. It brought it back to me having this individuality and craftsmanship. Like when I was young and making these one-offs for myself. I could do that with these hats and have each hat be a character of it’s own for my clients so no two would ever be alike. D: What is it about hats specifically?

N: I think it’s a piece, an item in your wardrobe that can change your look completely. You can add a hat and whatever you’ve constructed to go out in your day, to present the world to yourself... You wear a hat and it just transforms it into a totally different look. I always found that interesting and I found the history of hats interesting. Being a utilitarian item as well as now, a fashion piece. It’s meant to shield you from the sun or from the rain when you’re in New York. Or sometimes, like I hide behind my hat and not talk to people. All those elements com-bined were just some of the reasons why I love hats.

In 2008, Kevin and Bo Carney started the Mohawk General Store, a 400 square foot space located on Mohawk Street in Echo

Park. They eventually moved offices to Sun-set Junction in Silverlake, next to the risqué Circus of Books. They opened a women’s store and a separate men’s store. In 2013, they opened up a new location in Pasadena.

The concept of the General Store greatly appealed to Kevin. “There were general stores all over America, you know, 50 years ago where you’d go in and you could buy a little bit of everything,” he said. The store they created reflects their own personal inter-ests. “We were into ceramics and furniture, lighting, clothing and accessories, shoes, art and books. And so, we were like, hey, what if we put it all together into one concept?”

The store is stylish, but easy going. “It was an extension of our living room, in a way,” he said. “We wanted a living room where people could come and hang out and feel really com-fortable.” What they accomplished was a blend of California mid-century, Native America and cool desert. Kevin installed the shelving units and light fixtures himself. The store that now exists took three years of meticulous detailing.

Kevin and Bo Carney’s arrival in Los Angeles had inter-esting turns. Kevin started sewing at 8 years old, helping his mom make clothes for his family. He went onto study pat-tern-making, draping and tailoring at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He moved to New York starting his own brands; Biast and Generic Costume. Barneys was among one of the retailers who carried his work. Then planes flew into the Twin Towers on September 11th, and changed every-thing. Kevin decided to leave New York and settled in Los Angeles in 2003, doing consultant work for Guess, BCBG and Stussy. He went to Italy to work on a shoe collection and met Bo, a student from Korea. She was studying Fashion Business at Bocconi School of Management in Milan. Her education

retail Mohawk General Store 4011 W Sunset Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90029www.mohawkgeneralstore.com

became useful in their business ventures. In their store, Belgian designer Dries Van

Noten is perhaps the most recognizable name in their cache. According to Kevin, “We wanted to be brand ambassadors in what we believe in.”

Those brands may not be household names, but they’re certainly respectable. They include Arpenteur, clothing inspired by “French hunting, military and work clothes” from the 1920’s to the 1950’s and Swedish company Our Legacy, inspired by “classic garments from your grandfather reimagined for our time.”

For Spring 2014, they’re excited to bring in a new line from Italian company Bare-na and will offer clothes from star designer Junya Watanabe. They curate brands for those who are into fashion, but don’t wish to be loud about it. A designer’s name will not be plastered across a shirt or hand bag that they

carry. They choose garments with a certain amount of “ano-nymity built into the clothes.”

Regardless of how they curate, there will be nothing anon-ymous about the Mohawk General Store. They’re three years into a ten year lease, and their new Pasadena store will certain-ly not be their last. They’re vague on details but Los Angeles is not the only city they’re thinking about, and the Unites States is not the only country they’re considering.

LA legends

Unlike New York City, which is all about urban spaces, L.A. is the ultimate bungalow suburb. We didn’t discover our very own urban catacombs until the late 70s, but by the mid-80s, artists and ambitious young entrepreneurs were creating a new under-

ground scene which set the stage for L.A.’s downtown resurgence.I personally got my start when the Stock Exchange nightclub on

Spring Street marked a forty-year-late return to downtown Los An-geles glamour. The building’s beautiful interiors, once an actual stock exchange, evoked a new level of style outside the usual haunts of Holly-wood and the Sunset Strip. The club was an instant success, and because I knew the principals involved, I seized my opportunity and became the in-house photographer. With no portfolio but a knack for flattering total strangers (not to mention looking like I actually belonged), my pictures were on the society pages of newspapers and magazines––sometimes covering whole pages––literally overnight.

I was only ever looking for great images when I went out at night with my camera. I was never interested in celebrities much though in Hollywood they come with the territory and of course, photographing them was part of my job. But glamour––being fabulous––is even more intriguing because it doesn’t necessarily involve being famous; it’s about attitude and style. From exclusive, star-studded events to the then-new, illegal loft parties, for about six years, I covered it all––sometimes dashing from Beverly Hills to way downtown on the same night.

Fortunately, I was always on the inside; often the only pho-tographer in (or allowed in) the room. People trusted me, in part because I was out every night just like they were, helping to make them fabulous. Some of the very young impresarios, Bry-an Rabin and Brent Bolthouse to name but two, went on to become this generation’s social movers and shakers.

Eventually, I amassed an archive of negatives, almost all black & white, which, thirty years later, truly reflect a unique slice of time in L.A.’s evolving social history. “The real Holly-wood”, as I call it. “HOLLY-WOOD: Inside Out.”

here Montana Avenue

BY DIANE LIEU • PHOTOGRAPHED BY KELLY WEBB

The Westside’s cool microhood we know as Montana Ave. is just the place to spend a breezy Saturday. A stone’s throw from the mighty Pacific, this boulevard of tangible dreams is home to a number of beauty

meccas (with names like Dry Bar and Benefit) as well as sparkling jewelry shops, (with a little something for yourself or a loved one) snazzy boutiques and snackeries with all the makings for the most sophisticated Lunchables you’ve ever seen. Heralded as the “more polished younger sister to Venice’s artsy Abbot Kinney” Montana Avenue is the place to go for a half-caf soy capp, bone dry, before heading to the salon for a hair taming session and new shoes to go with that killer haircut. The tree-lined avenue has a homey, unpretentious feel that is somehow still simultaneously SoCal. Part-time models walking their dogs mix and mingle with new moms on their daily pram walk. Locals drift in and out of shops, grabbing baked goods and essentials whilst tourists float along gathering Christmas gifts and pure gastronomical delights in the form of burgers and beer at Father’s Office, also a local hangout. Or if it’s been one of those days where no one is answering your calls and your Mean Reds are out in full force, your search for comfort foods needs to go no further than Marmalade Café.

Separating the two distinct neighborhoods of Brentwood and Santa Monica, Montana Ave has a fresh, not funky, clean-cut but chic vibe that weaves itself throughout the west side. Every visit is different from the last and with the beach so near, this treasured hot spot is the perfect place to spend a winter’s day, even if it’s only a blustery 65°F.

ListWith more than 50,000 pools, Greater Palm Springs can boast that it has more pools per capita than anywhere else in the country.

A desert oasis lies a little more than 100 miles from LA’s city center. Most of us have heard of it but attach images of business men in brightly colored golf

pants dotting the greens. Who, later, with a towel over their heads, steam like broccoli in a tiled room somewhere. That, or vivid images of overripe teenagers on a spring break rampage moving in swarms up and down the boulevards come to mind. Neither, to be honest, are very appealing. That was then, times are changing and Palm Springs, with over

130 hotels & resorts, is now the place to escape the daily, dusty grind of Los Angeles. Colorful resorts glitter

and lapis blue pools gleam. Palm trees line the avenues, proudly bearing their city’s name and swaying in the desert

air. It feels like any day could be a mid-summer’s day. Coffee shops, candy stores, boutiques and restaurants ranging from chic

to quaint stand ready to relieve you of your work stresses and worries. The LA Fashion Magazine team hit the streets & soaked

up some of the dying summer sun to reveal our favorite resort hot spots in Tinsel Town’s little sister in the desert.

This year-round playground of mid-century homes and hotels is the perfect place for the weekend sojourn

Here’s what you need to know: There once was a fashion illustrator named Tony Viramontes. His quick, energetic illustrations graced the pages of

many European fashion publications. He died young, very young. His work went unnoticed

for decades until Tony’s brother Ed showed them to author Dean Rhys Morgan. “Ed opened them quite

nonchalantly to reveal the most exquisite pieces of work. A book had to be assembled.” Thus, Morgan has put together the beautifully crafted and curated,

Bold, Beautiful, and Damned (published by Laurence King Publishing).

Viramontes became famous. He created portraits of everybody who

was anybody at the time, and conceived album covers for Donna Summer and Janet Jackson.

Mentored by Antonio Lopez and Jack Potter, and heavily influenced by photographer Steven Meisel, Viramontes refined his craft and moved to New York City.

Later he moved to Paris and worked for Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino and Claude Montana among others.

It all came crashing down in a typical 80s manner: AIDS claimed the life of Tony Viramontes at the age of 31.

Victor Ross II

Q Where are you from? I’m an army brat. I come from a multiracial family. Mom and pops still together, 28 years strong. I’m smashed between two brothers. Born in Monterey, California then moved to Germany for 3 years and came back to the states when I was 4. We moved to Missouri and stayed put there. I was raised in the rural towns of LaMonte and Knob Noster, these tiny little farm towns an hour east of Kansas City. I spent my time goofing off with my brothers, playing in the woods, playing sports, fishing and watching the

seasons change.

Q What brought you here? Dreams, curiosity, fear, resistance, confusion, the need to grow. I had already been modeling out of Kansas City for 5 years and after high school I figured if I was going to continue and try to turn this thing into a career, I needed to be in New York or Los Angeles. My parents always told me how gorgeous Pebble Beach was and so there was this curiosity to see the Sunshine State.

I think I just had this innate calling to be back on the west coast.

Q Where does your art come from? Honestly, most likely from my lack of going to therapy. One trip back home a couple years ago, my mom pulled out some artwork she did in high school and it was very similar to some doodles that I do. It was kind of freaky. My mom is actually the first female First Sergeant in the state of Missouri, so with this position and just a military career in general, there is no room for a free spirit or artistry. So this artist that was inside of her who she truly was couldn’t be present you know? Not with that career field. I would love to think that my subconscious was awesome enough to pick up on this version of my mother, this suppressed artist. So I guess in some way it’s just in my blood to want to be creative. I was just fortunate to be able to live it, explore it, express it. These paintings come out of every human emotion. Pure bliss or frustration, aggravation, disturbances, the feeling of being complete, feeling whole, feeling lonely, beauty, love.

Who do you paint for? I used to believe all the stigmas before I painted. I thought calling yourself an artist was pretentious and self idolizing. It’s not true, I have artist friends across all mediums and they are some of the most selfless people I know. It’s a giving of yourself. With that said I paint for me as selfish as it sounds. I paint for my pleasure, my therapy, my feelings, my release. If somebody else likes it cool, that’s a bonus. If I can just evoke peace, a stillness, a calm patience, to evoke anything from anybody is a revelation. So many are just numb out there. To evoke anything is a dream.

A Hyphenated ManYou may have spotted his modestly magnificent mug on the pages of GQ, Unleash’d and Prestige, (opposite the most famous of all those Kardashians none the less) but this model is so much more than just a pretty face. A painter, who professes poetry through both words and images as a photographer, Ross seems to make more use of his 24 hour days than most.

Bex Taylor-KlausBex Taylor Klaus is far from your typical up-and-coming actress. She quickly developed a cult fanbase after viewers were struck by her gender-bending character, Bullet, on Netflix’s revived season of AMC’s The Killing. Catch her on the upcoming season of Arrow, as streetwise DC sidekick, “Sin.”

Q Describe what you do in one sentence.I do moral ambiguity on a professional scale.Q Where are you from?Atlanta, GAQ Where are you going?Chasing the shadows.Q What drives you there? To be an actor is to visit the dark places others strive to stay away from. I want to visit those dark places. I always find the most interesting spots of light there.Q If you were to explain your belief or theory of life to a 5 year old, what would you say? Even when life sucks, there is magic everywhere. You just have to remember to look up.Q What’s your guilty pleasure? What form does it take? (ex: Baking, reading teenage thriller novels, etc)I have this theory that if you feel any guilt, it’s not a true pleasure. That being said, I do have a deep love for Disney princesses and honestly cannot get enough of the old cartoon movies!

Q Describe what you do in one sentence.I shine light on others aiming to inspire, uplift and create humor through art forms of being a TV host personality and actress.

Q How would you describe your fashion style? You caught me at the perfect time. I’m actually defining my personal style right now. As a kid, I got hand me downs from my big brother and it usually looked like boys cargo pants. Now I’m entering a new phase of life where I love a comfortable, classy, beachy style.

But frankly, in my perfect world, I would never want to wear the same outfit twice. I am always on the lookout for new trends and designers because I am so attracted to what is fresh and unique. My style comes down to expressing what I am feeling moment by moment and, like many women, that is changing constantly!

Q Favorite designers? What’s been catching my eye on the runway lately is Sachika Twins, YOZE, Altaf Maneshia, and Alexander McQueen. My attitude is open and soulful right now where I see beauty all around me. The designers that catch my attention usually touch me with a positive, bright, and subtly sexy energy.

Q What’s your superpower or what’s your spirit animal?

My superpower is the ability to see real visions. I’ll see a vision in my mind’s eye and often it will be manifested. It takes a lot of concentration and discipline to get connected to my higher consciousness, but it’s worth it when I do tap into it. The results, well that’s a longer interview to be shared in a more intimate time setting. I’ve got stories. My favorite moments are when I’ll get receive a vision for someone else and it blesses them in a special way.My spirit animal is the enchanted unicorn, flying,

jubilant and vibrant.

RisingStar Best known for her reoccuring role as Marisol “Flaca” Gonzalez, on the hit show, “Orange is the New Black” Jackie Cruz takes to the streets of LA., in style.

Are you up in Canada? Yes, I’m going to Canada on the 29th of this month.

I’m going to shoot a movie, tentatively called “13 Steps” but they’re still working on the name of the movie. The producer and director is Ivan Godoy and there’s another lead character that plays Cairo, which is one of those gangster cartel people. He kills my family and his name is Tero who is played by Raoul Trujillo. He’s been in Apocalypto and Riddick. It’s exciting to work with new people.

Let’s start with the beginning, you were born where?I was born in Queens, New York.

But you grew up…We moved to Los Angeles when I was like 15.I moved to Miami at 21.

What drew you to Miami?Yes. I was working with a Latin Grammy winning

producer there but that was just not working out so well and I had an opportunity to come to New York and I did.

You’re also a singger/musician… which came first, the

music or the acting?Since I was seven years old, I saw six or seven, I

can’t remember — I saw The Bodyguard in Spanish in the Dominican Republic. I was also raised in the DR from 6 to 15 years old, and I went to an American school there, where I saw The Bodyguard and I was so in love with Whitney Houston, I told my mom I wanted to be a singer and an actress. When my mom heard me sing, she put me in classes and said “We’re moving to Holly-wood, baby.”

Your mother was very supportive?Yeah, and I have to say I was raised by five wonderful

women. My mother was 15 when she had me, so she had her sisters raise me with her, as well as a very good friend of the family, Diana Martin, who lives in New York. They’re Italian-American, and they sent me every summer to New York with them, so I was raised with them, and I was a part of the family. They’re like my aunt and uncle, but they’re not blood-related.

How long have you been on Orange is the New Black?I was in the first season, and I’m still moving forward.

Do people recognize you? Has it changed your life dramatically?Yes, it has. I didn’t think it would, but I take the train in New

York, and people are like, “Can I take a picture of you?” It’s crazy.

What do they generally ask you about the show? “When is it coming out?” They’re really excited about that. It’s

coming out in 2014. No one knows the date. All I can say is, every-one’s going to be surprised. The characters say and do things that nobody’s going to imagine. I feel like it’s Christmas every single time I read a script, so imagine how I feel, everybody’s going to be “Wow’d.”

Anything you can let our readers in on?I can’t say a darn thing. Honestly, it’s just insane. You just have to

keep watching. I can’t wait either, because I want you to see what we’ve been working on.

Orange is the New Black is an ensemble acting show, what is that like?

You have to be on your A game everyday. You’re working with these people that I feel make you better as

an actress. Working with people like Kate Mulgrew— I’m honored to be sharing the dream with her. I just think it’s a blessing and I feel so lucky about it. I feel like this show is what has opened doors for me. It’s my dream come true and I get to work with amazing people, amazing writers. It has made me a strong person and a strong woman and hopefully, a better actress.

Did you do anything special to audition? No. It was just a regular audition. I went in there, but — they

didn’t really describe Blackout too much. She’s this wiry Latina with an attitude. I just gave her my own character. They loved it, I guess. They booked me — not right then and there. I didn’t have a callback or anything. They were just like, “Oh, you got the part and this is when you work.”

The greatest thing for me was that it was a recurring role, but I didn’t know I was going to be in it so much. I didn’t think that I would be. I was just so blessed, because they write as they go, so if they like you, they’ll keep writing for you.

Your new album is called Hollywood Gypsy?Yes, Hollywood Gypsy which kind of describes me, cause I’ve

traveled everywhere. I’ve lived everywhere, and I’m from Holly-wood.

I feel like that’s where I was raised, and that’s where my dream is coming true. But honestly it came true in New York also, but I still always go to Hollywood.

Page 56: The LA Fashion magazine December 2013

LA FASHION DECEMBER 201356

Do you have any interest in doing theater?Yes. Maybe in the future. Broadway is awesome. I

mean who wouldn’t want to do Broadway, singing and acting.

It’s a perfect match because you sing, and presumably you can dance.

Of course. I’m Dominican, hello? And I play the guitar. I could do the whole show myself.

When you were growing up did you watch a lot of television?

Yeah. I can say television was my babysitter.

What were some of your favorite shows?I’ve always wanted to be an actress and a singer, so I

watched a lot of the Disney Channel. I wish I had an opportunity when I was younger to audition for that kind of stuff, but I think I started late at 16.

Your also a performer, where do you perform in NYC?I do shows in New York City. I mostly do shows at

The Bitter End in New York which is a very famous place where a lot of rock stars performed.

Who are your musical inspirations?Aretha Franklin. I just really love soulful women. I

also love Fiona Apple, Elvis Costello, Tracy Chapman. I feel like I have a mixture of those voices because I have a raspy tone and I have some note to my voice with some path.

Do you write the songs, or do you find songs?I write and I co-write. I come in with an idea, and

I have people get it out of me and make it sound like a song.

Do you play any instruments?I play the guitar.

What’s your favorite chord?G, this is my favorite chord. You can sing a whole song with a G.

LA PEOPLE

Jason CardiffSMOKING UP THE ROOM IN ALL THE RIGHT WAYS

Jason Cardiff is the President and CEO of CIGIREX, the top cigarette company in the e-cigarette industry race. Created in 2010, Cigirex is the first product in the market place that does not contain Propylene Glycol, the harmful ingredient commonly used in all other E-cigarettes. We sat down with Cardiff to talk e-cigarettes and their immergence as an alternative to nicotine-based cigarettes.

How did you get started in the business of cigarette replacement?I found the first crude electronic cigarettes about six years ago when I was in China doing some other work. When I looked at what it had to offer, I couldn’t believe it. I thought this is just a game changer. Sometimes, you find something and it’s just so revolutionary. No one has ever challenged the traditional tobacco cigarette other than the patch and the gum, which are totally different than a smoking experience. This gave smokers the experience that they like, and it delivered them the addictive part of the cigarette and removed 100% of the carcinogens. The nico-tine is what people are addicted to, but in a traditional tobacco cigarette, it’s the 3,000 chemicals and the paper, the tar and the curing process of the tobacco leaf that is so cancer causing. So we’ve removed all those items. We’ve left the experience smokers love and what they are addicted to.We’re aligned with several charities and cancer organizations. And as education is coming around, they are

more and more accepting of electronic cigarettes. In Europe, we have a huge presence in the UK. There, the products are very accepted by their national health organizations and their version of the FDA is very pro-elec-tronic cigarettes because it stops smokers from smoking.

How does the cigarette work? There’s a very small battery in there that heats up the liquid nicotine and vaporizes it into a pure water vapor, so that’s what you’re inhaling. It looks like there’s smoke. What we’re seeing as smoke is really water vapor.

What’s the policy regarding smoking these cigarettes in public places? To date there’s nothing as far as public policy goes. Certain establishments can ban electronic cigarettes but they can also say no shirt, no shoes, no service. That’s a choice they make as an owner of the establishment. As far as the government goes, there’s no regulation because there’s no secondhand smoke. There’s no secondhand smoke, whatsoever. The benefits are no secondhand smoke, nothing on your teeth, nothing on your clothes, nothing on your hair, and you won’t die from it. You get all the benefits of a regular cigarette.

Any celebrity endorsements at this time?Yes. We’ve worked with a lot of celebrities. Obviously the latest news is our alignment with Jacob Busch.

We’ve also worked with Leonardo di Caprio; he uses our product. There’s a huge list of celebrities that use our cigarettes, but we haven’t necessarily aligned ourselves with 100%, from an advertising perspective.

It’s rare to have a business where we get to do good and have incredible profit margins. Normally, in order to have incredible profit margins, you have to do bad. We get to do both. From a fashion perspective, we have heard from several fashion designers in the New York area that a lot of the models are serious smokers. The reason that they’re smokers, as you know from writing all your articles, is that smoking keeps them thin. It keeps them thin because it keeps them happy. That’s what nicotine does, it keeps you happy. Nicotine is the cheapest happy drug on the planet. That’s why people smoke. That’s what they’re addicted to: that happy feeling.

LA FASHION DECEMBER 2013110

You have created a new style for yourself these past few months and you are not ready, nor willing to follow any fashion trend that may be in the fashion forecast right now. Be yourself this holiday season. Wear maroon when red is in order. Wear green when

your Groupons wear out. You know deep in your heart, that while the gifts are unwrapped by

the lucky ones, that it is you who bought them and brought them to rest upon the tree’s skirt. Heroes need no kudos. Think Marcel Marceau. Cheers!

Your originality and organizational aptitude for creativity leaves your family craving for more this holiday season. You are the spark of the tinsel, but your subtle sense of fashion needs to step up to reflect your magnetic aura. You are loved and admired beyond your comprehension, so throw on those dazzling shoes, zip

up that dress and apply some shiny eye shadow. Yes, you are the belle of the ball this

December. Choose light colors for your hair and sky blue for your eyes. Your lips tell the truth, glossed or matte. Venus will venture as far as stating that you must bring your all ‘end all, be all’. More is more this time of year! Bring out your inner Cher. You are terrific!

Mercury’s retrograde this Autumn brought the fashion retro flare into the spotlight. ‘Twas a difficult choice for you to either wear a fairy gown or a witch dress for Halloween. You figured out how to be either/or. It did not revamp your style though, but as they say “stay with the tried and true”. Hmmm… did the famous Gemini Marilyn Monroe go with the status quo? No!

Cook up a storm, bake a pie and wear all the red, white & green you want. Celebrate

your holidays and the Winter Solstice. Fashion your future as you envision it. Be the Gem in Gemini. Drink water, plenty of red juices and wear tons of perfume. “He knows if you’ve been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake”!

Your ability to understand the future trends transcends your own perception. You are as you are, the backstage director, the trail blazer and you are the one that helps win an Oscar! That real ‘fashion moment’ creator that you are, is one that observes yet projects the trends. Vice versa, your style is timeless, classic as Bill Blass and versatile like Meryl Streep. Trends are too superficial for your intellect. This season be the best lover that

you are naturally, the taste maker that everyone turns to and pull it all together to be

this Season’s best. Keep it cool with a blue Moon hue and you will rule your domain. Feature your eyes and wear a fresh body scent. You should be gleaming and glistening by NYE!!

Tis the season for you to share your blessings with others and witness their happiness. Your charm and savoire- faire have the Santa Claus effect upon your

loved ones, so if you are a lion or lioness, your cubs all look up to you! You may feel the need to have a new hair-do or a new shirt, but you are counted on to spread the holiday cheer with your style and exquisite taste! Fancy yet fair enough, making everyone feel

they are part of your royal realm, like Jackie O gracefully did. Fashion is a noun, not a verb for you fashionistas. You

are loved for sharing with others your love of good taste. Autumn might have had some stagnate moments according to your expectations, but you are excited to fill your bag with gifts and share your abundance, no matter what the amount is.

The Virgin icon that so many around the World vener-ate, has the best outfit out of all holiday icons. Blue silk fabric, gold thread, stars and cherubs adorn her “look”. Yet, she comes in second amidst this Santa Claus patri-archal festivity. You Virgos know her woes too well and you are relieved that Winter is finally here, so that you

can regroup your energy. What a holiday gift burden you have, as so many expect much more from

you than the simple fashion fares. My advice is to sit back and enjoy the holidays, do not fret or care about coming up with more original concepts. You have already influenced the future of fashion more than once. New Year’s Eve is yours to be new and eccentric. Don’t worry be happy!!

Good news, my lady of truth and beauty! No matter what they say, you still are the balance between good and evil and not many can come close to your cheerful love of the holidays. Your over the top fashion choices are so tasteful that everyone that knows you wishes upon a star to be invited to your festivities! You feel balanced during all holidays actually. You have the charm and know-how to decorate your abode

and yourself as you wish and everyone will be showering you with well-deserved compliments.

The designers and retailers are chomping at the bit to have more souls like you devour their holiday wares. You have that knack to make us ‘feel’ the true meaning of the holidays. Amen to you Libras, our Lady of liberty! You radiate beauty like Brigitte Bardot. Happy Holidays.

Fall was the season for you to be “in”! Winter is the time for you to reach out. Your seductive eyes are perfect for that smoky look and your luscious lips for that shiny red gloss or matte maroon tint. Not many can boast either with such flare! You shall attract the object of your desires as long as you learn to be flexible. With the holidays upon us, it is time to put

aside that vampire chic and your sex appeal asid. Please purchase attire that

tones down that “It” factor, so that you receive the love you so need from your family and friends. Save the sex ‘thang’ for NYE. Yes, through your looks you can at-tract what you want just like Marie Antoinette did but

words can only carry you so far. Walk the talk. Classic fashion will find you family fun for this holiday season.

Tis the season to be merry and if you have not started to purchase your holiday wardrobe yet, then stop decorating your tree and go! Allez faire le shopping and stop being so thrifty. You are getting younger in spirit as you are getting older in age, so please consult your friends and/or your oracle for festive holiday fashion garments. Your desire to please exceeds your closet’s contents and now is the time to procure the tools that will carry you through the whole winter

season. Your smile sells a lot, à la Ava

Gardner, but since we do judge books by their covers, please take advice from others this holiday to rise up to the occasion. There’s only so many ways you can revive that vintage tailleur. Save that suit for later when you can actually afford genuine pearls to go with it. In the meantime, enjoy your loved ones while they compliment your new appearance. Feel comfortable in your skin and know that you are loved and appreciated for your efforts!

You are at heart the ‘fashion smashion’ type. You admire clothes as a pure art form as Christian Dior did and disdain the ordinary. You have a nostalgic taste, though your mind focuses on the future. Your charisma surpasses any piece of jewelry’s shine and you do not really care to follow fashion trends. It’s all about style

for you and if there is a time during the year that you like to go that

extra mile for, it is the holidays. Your charm is simply irresistible and amplified during this season. You tend to focus more on decorating your home than yourself and at times that may make you seem aloof. You can be just like a fashion page, perfect and pleasant to look at if you want to. Purchase classic pieces that will carry you on to the next holiday season.

The most versatile sign during this Autumn season was Pisces. You fared well this Fall amidst planets retrograding and eclipses, so now you are ready to be inspired by the magical aura of the holiday season and the stable feeling of family. Your soul shines through your eyes and stirs up everyone’s happy feelings, so make sure to embellish your eyelashes and eyebrows. Elizabeth Taylor won an Oscar with those mesmeriz-

ing Piscean eyes!! The holidays are on top of your to-do list this December because you’ll

get so inspired by the sights and sounds. Silk and velvet adorn you well. Dark lipstick will accentuate your infectious smile, so it’s all about cosmetics for you this December. Add some glitter on NYE, wear some rhinestones and you will be in the spotlight once again. Thank you for sharing your inner beauty with the World. Savor the season while it lasts.

You are the glorious grand beauty that we all wish for during the holidays. You have a smile and radiance that most strive for and venerate much like the one Maria Callas shared with her fans. You are the majestic mirror of our collective creativity that inspires us all to go forward as you canter through December with grace. I

suggest that you look at your wildly wide wardrobe and start editing. It’s a perfect time for a trip to Goodwill before the year’s end. You look good in any color you choose but please make sure you choose the right shoes. Think comfortable because you deserve a break from being the hard working winning horse you are. It is time to graze on some greens and trot into a spa. You

will be on your legs long enough to shop and decorate your house this holiday, so I suggest that you get some rest if you want to bring in the New Year in full force so that you can gallop the night away.
