I have applied bronze and gold tones to the eyes. The bronze enhances the crease makes the eyes stand out and it translates well in photos.

For the blush and lipstick, I chose bold colours as in photos, the flash can naturally wash out models’ faces. So a touch of color on the cheeks and lips will make the face look natural as well as highlighting bone structure and defining the lips.

As eyebrows frame the eyes, makeup artists tend to fill in the brows. Especially for photo shoot. The use of soft brow pencil or a brow powder, just following the natural shape, can define the eyebrows and create a dramatic look.

SELECTION PROCESS

FRONT COVER IMAGE

Hair and Make up- I like the lose curls styling for the hairstyle as it looks effortless and natural. The coordinating make-up is effective as it emphasises the the bone structure of the model and ties in with the accessories. This fashionable main image will capture the attention of the target audience.

Styling- the wardrobe choice is casual and in fashion. I have chosen an eye catching necklace to match the bold lip colour. It is simplistic and contemporary which embraces today’s fashion.

Pose- The model communicates to the target audience through the pose, its relaxed and gentle which will invite the readers in.

Subject- the focus of the main image is a normal girl who has a natural look and will relate with the readers on a personal level. Also an unfamiliar face on the shelves may work in Urban magazine’s advantage as amongst all the famous faces, people may be drawn to my magazines front cover out of curiosity.

Shot type- I have gone for a medium shot which allows readers to notice the fashion and the urban background. The blank spaces in the corners of the photo are deliberate, as to allow room for the text to fit neatly around the subject.

CONTENT PAGE IMAGES

For the biggest image on the content page I chose an image from the same photo-shoot as the front cover photo. This is to indicate that this image is referring to the main article.

The second image will be of an original image from behind the scenes of Milan Fashion Week. This is an article that is not featured on the front cover, but this will show that the magazine has variety and even more interesting articles inside.

Another photo included on the content page will be of sandals and pearls as the target audience (teenage girls) typically like to read about shoes and accessories.

Page 14: Fashion magazine construction

The main article will feature four images. One will be of the same model advertised on the front cover- creating synergy. This image relates to the double page spread due to the colourful graffiti and fashionable styling.

The next one will be of another aspect to the double page spread- this editorial fashion image is of the Chinese male who I interview in the article. The Graffiti background represents city style.

This photo is of the other female interviewee. This photo showcases African urban fashion at its finest and will inspire teens of all nationalities. The concrete background connotes an urban jungle.

And this image is off the Serbian teen I interviewed for my magazine. The edgy pose communicates high fashion and the smart styling represents a segment that urban fashion covers- geek chic.

BREAK DOWN OF THE FRONT COVER

Page 16: Fashion magazine construction

To begin with I have created my magazine front cover using Adobe Photoshop. With creating a new file I began with a Size A4 (21cm x 29.7cm) background which I then built up my design upon.

To follow I created a coloured strip which I located at the top of the magazine page to give it a splash of colour and to comply with my initial design.

Now I have selected the main image, which I cropped to apply with the rule of thirds and to fit on the conventional 4A magazine size. I have further enhance the image in regards to contrast and vibrancy with the use of HDR toning option tool.

Page 17: Fashion magazine construction

Then I began to incorporate the magazine masthead- Urban. Following my design I stayed with the deep green colour and applied some editing techniques such as; stroke and Bevel and Emboss. In order to make the mast head 3D in order to stand out from the background.

Next I imported a barcode to be used on my front cover. I positioned it in the bottom left cover following a typical magazine layout. Being located her it does not disturb the textual and visual arrangement of the front page.

I then opened a supporting image in Photoshop, which I cropped and edited using enhance- saturation and brightness options. I then pasted it into the front page and located it on the left side of the front cover as not to obstruct the main image.

Page 18: Fashion magazine construction

With my first article design assembly, I have moved on to my next textual feature. I began formatting my main article buy giving it prime location- along the bottom of the page with increased text size in order to be noticeable and eye catching. I also enhance the text using FX stroke tool to make it bolder.

Implementing the next article I chose a bright yellow colour to create a ‘summer like’ feel to it, as the magazine is a June issue. Also the subjects of the article are relative to fashion which will attract my target audience. The chosen font is in capital letters, san-serif style making it bold and easy to read.

DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

Page 20: Fashion magazine construction

The mast head is too dark meaning it is fading into the background. I will reasses potencial colours in order to make it stand out more.

The colour scheme is too colourful, like Elle and Teen Vogue I should stick to a colour scheme which consists of 3 colours.

The unoriginal image looks out of place. This is an aspect I will develop on.

FIRST FRONT COVER DRAFT

The strip along the top is the same colour as the models lips. I may develop on this feature.

Page 21: Fashion magazine construction

SECOND FRONT COVER DRAFT

I have re-arranged the text to create some variety.

The black text is not standing out enough. I will change this aspect.

The badge is obstructing the main image, I will relocate this.

I have decided not to include the unoriginal image.

Page 22: Fashion magazine construction

Developing on my cover I have decided to go for a classical 3 shade colour scheme- black, white and green.

The title for the main article is fading into the back ground, I will fix this through applying the stoke affect to outline the text.

I relocated the badge so now it no long detracts from the main image.

The color scheme of this draft make it look gothic which may attract the wrong audience.

THIRD FRONT COVER DRAFT

Page 23: Fashion magazine construction

The masthead is a serif font- Gungsuh that has been edited with shadows and an outlines to make it stand out and memorable. The title is located at the top of the page slightly to the left, which will catch the target audiences eye. As the word ‘Urban’ is in a bold font, this will emphasize the youth culture that my magazines wants to attract. The formatting of the mast head connotes urban style.

The primary cover lines of the magazine uses stylish colours (blue, pink and turquoise) which are eye catching and endearing to the reader. The secondary selling lines use contrasting colours such as black and white which stand out from the background and complement the other three colours used in the textual design.

The language in the selling lines are, short, sharp and contemporary as they describe topics that teenage girls discuss or would like to read about. The bold pugs, such as the badge, make a strong impact on the target audience and using the titles of the articles as a mecognisim to hook the audience in and making them want to read the whole article.

The Barcode is vital for selling the magazine. It is made up off a digital series of numbers which shows the number of issues sold and the number of magazines in stock in the shop.

Main Image- is a medium portrait photograph of a typical girl, who represents the magazine’s target market, teen girls. This is to make the magazine personal and inviting to the desired audience.

The lighting is dim and turban background is out of focus as the emphasis is on the main image . The colourful wardrobe choice is in style and contemporary ,combining the teens with sophisticated modern fashion. The relaxed pose and inviting facial expression of the model is welcoming and friendly embodying the essence of’ girl next door’.

Overall the image and text fit together well as they both reflect Urban style, the use of a ‘normal girl’ on the cover appeals to the target audience and the eye catching colours and topics of the titles will make the issue stand out on the shelves.

The connotation behind the colour scheme is that they are current and complimentary which ties in with the contemporary styling of the main image.

BREAK DOWN OF THE CONTENT PAGE

Page 25: Fashion magazine construction

Moving on to my content page I began with a light detailed patterned background. This will give the page a neutral base in which I will build up all the content information on. Through this process I applied the same skills necessary for my front cover.

Next I included the masthead and first image. This will inform the readers that this is the content page. I created these aspects first as they will catch the readers eye first. The curly font of the masthead is visually pleasing and will attract the target audience.

With more time and effort I was able to create an effective and informative content page that is relative to the front cover. It also continues the bright colour scheme showcased on the front page and the background reflects the urban staircase background.

Page 26: Fashion magazine construction

FIRST CONTENT PAGE DRAFT

The background is too plain and boring for the type of magazine I wish to create

Page 27: Fashion magazine construction

Denotation\ connation- The use of hints of pink, turquoise and blue in the text represents the youth and playfulness of the magazine yet still staying bold and classical with the use of black and white. The connotations of the main image may interest an audience who wants to read more about the article advertised on the cover.

Use of text- The font size is relatively small throughout the contents page as there are many articles that need to be showcased. The text colour is classically black making the small print easy to read. There are boxes of text next to the images to inform readers what articles they are linked to.

Main image- The models facial expression is cool and mysterious which could intrigue and entice the audience. The image is medium shot of the same model displayed on the front cover. The fashionable denim wardrobe shows the model is embodying a modern and youthful look. This style is worn by many celebrities today, the reader will recognise this making it an attractive image.

Direct Mode- There are many articles listed that may personally appeal to different individuals due to their interests and relations to certain subjects. ‘Fashion’ and ‘Urban’ stand out the most on this page as it is repeated many times, this is because these are the main themes of this magazine.

Masthead- The name of the magazine is ‘Urban’ which represents the magazine as a young, fresh and edgy magazine which is about fashion. This will attract an audience who is interested in the new trends and the latest fashion icons. The mast head is located at the top of the page this is so it is the first thing the audience reads. Its relative size is due to my design including three large images related to the articles inside. The black colouring of the masthead makes it stand out from the white box out making it extremely eye catching.

Selling line- this magazine has the month and year considerably small and situated above the masthead, this is due to the date not being as significant as the other information on the content page. Also the name of the magazine was advertised on the front cover I have situated it under the mast head. Although the date and magazine name small and not bold, their black outlining makes the month, year ‘June 2015’ and magazine name stand out against the contrasting white back ground.

BREAK DOWN OF THE DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

Page 29: Fashion magazine construction

I began with writing the most important information, to begin to structure my article. I then continued by implementing the images- arranged to give the pages symmetry and organisation.

I then wrote more of the article and changed the background- to a urban skyline in order to continue the urban city theme. The layering for this design was difficult, yet it helped me to develop my photo-shop skills.

With all my text typed and laid out on the page I then began to reassess background choices due to this one being too dark and clashing with the colour scheme.

Page 30: Fashion magazine construction

FIRST DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD DRAFT

The introduction at the top looks out of place, I will have to reposition this aspect of the article.

The page number don’t need the letter P.

The text is not justified and looks amateur.

The images look like they are missing something, I will need to create text boxes in order to make them more visually intriguing.

To continue the theme on the content page I will change the odd number page to blue and leave the even numbers pink.

I will also highlight the letters ‘Q’ that stand for question, in the corresponding colours that the image is boarded with.

Page 31: Fashion magazine construction

Main images- The main images are long shots of the teens interviewed for the magazine. The teens are styled in a modern fashion which embodies a contemporary take on the average teen stereotype. The subject combines youthful glamour and high fashion, which is what the target audience wants to read about. There are many aspects to the images; the graffiti backdrops, impressive prints and bold poses. The styling and set also keep with urban theme and reflects each individual style as well as symbolizing international unity through fashion

Text- the text is positioned below or above to the image that is linked to it, this creates an organised feel to the article and makes the double page easy to follow. The article begins with the capitilised letter, like the conventional layout of a magazine spread. The text is outlined with a thick black line which creates a ‘graffiti like’ effect. I also made the text justified to create a visually pleasing finish.

The background- The backdrop for this double page spread is a sketched urban scene. It links in well with urban city theme.

Language- The language in the magazine is modern and ‘teen like’ which will appeal to the target audience. The substance of the article consists of four short interviews. They give an honest insight into the lives of four very different teens who are united through their interest in urban fashion. It discusses how each teen interprets urban fashion as well as answering a variety of fashion related questions.

Features- I have included pull quotes from each interview to be positioned in the coloured boxes by the sides of the photos. This makes the images more eye catching and interesting to the readers.
