The third week in March, Assembly President Ro-berta Joy Lee visited the three lodges in District 1. OnMonday,March15,at10:00a.m.shemetwithBingham#78.AlsovisitingwereJeanFloyd,RuthHarrisonandas-sociatememberWandaHays.FollowingthePresident’smessageonthewomenoftheBible,atableauonLydia,thefirstChristianconvertinEuropeand“asellerofpurple”whoassistedPaulandSilaswaspresented. Reader was Alice Mayer and Elaine Beyeler por-trayedLydia.LunchwasservedattheSeniorCitizensandgameswereplayed. Tuesdayevening,March16,PresidentRobertaJoytraveled toBlackfoot for themeetingofProgress#48attheChineserestaurant.Duetoillnesses,anopenmeet-ingwasnecessaryconductedbyNobleGrandCathyTou-saint..Programfortheeveningwasthesingingacappellaof thePresident’ssongsbyaguest. Outof townmem-bersvisitingwere:ShannonVieth,MattandAnnaBreezeofPocatello.AliceMayerandElaineBeyelerofAmericanFalls. Thursdayevening,March18,a roastporkandpotluck supper preceded the special meeting of Ivy #23 tohosttheAssemblyPresident.ThemeetingwasconductedbyNobleGrandShannonViethwithashortprogramon“AVirtuousWoman”takenfromProverbs30.PresentinghervirtuesweremembersAmandaRussell,SuzanSoles,andCrystalShepherd,whowereclothedinwhitesatinrobesand carried appropriate articles such as books, lamp,broomandetc. ThePresidentconcludedtheweekwiththeMeetingofDistricts1and2heldinAmericanFalls.(reportedelse-whereinthispaper).

Wow !! The sun shined, the rain and wind disap-pearedandthe14thdayofAprilwasperfect. Zenith59wasveryhonoredtohostourPresidentJoyLee.Ween-joyed a leisurely lunch and pleasant conversation. Wewere honored to have 24 Rebekah sisters and brotherspresent.Thelodgepresentedourpresidentwithamon-etarygiftandawristcorsage.Itwasalsopassedthatwedonate the meetings silver drill money to the presidentsprojects. Wehonoredourdeskofficerswithamonetarygift and thank them for their dedication toadifficult job.ThePresidentgaveareadingonthe‘WomenoftheBible’whichweallenjoyed.Dessertwasenjoyedbysomeafter themeetingandthedayendedinfriendship,loveandtruth.JoyceWikse,reporter

District Meeting for Districts 1 & 2 was hosted byBinghamRebekahLodge#78intheAmericanFallsmeet-ingplaceatStJohnsEpiscopalChurch.About20sistersand10OddFellowswerepresent. NobleGrandKayBammertopenedthemeeting,andturnedthetimetotheCommitteeofElaineBeyeler,Chair-man;KayBammert,ViceChairman;andSecretaryAliceMayer. Rebekah Assembly President Roberta Joy Lee,VicePresidentJoAnnJohnston,andSecretaryVickiKielewere introducedandHonorsgiven.DistrictDeputyPres-identsVerlaRaeMortensonandAliceMayerwere thenintroducedandHonorsgiven. ElaineBeyeler,AssemblyOutsideGuardian,andKayBammert,HonorGuard,werealsointroduced. The Odd Fellow’s Meeting were honored to haveGrandMasterJamesWeighallandGrandSecretaryKen-nyAverillpresent.PGMMattBreezeconductedthemeet-ing. Afterarecessfor lunchconsistingof friedchicken,salads and dessert, a Joint Open Meeting of Odd Fel-lows and Rebekahs was held with Frank Lawyer actingas chairman. It was voted to recommend to the GrandLodgeandAssemblytheconsolidationofthetwodistricts,withmeetingplacesdeterminedby thehostingRebekahLodge.ThenewDistrict1will includelodgesatAshton,IdahoFalls,Blackfoot,Pocatello,andAmericanFallsandSodaSpringsOddFellows.ItwillcontinuetomeetonthethirdSaturdayofMarch.

With the significantly less than normalsnowpackinIslandParkthisyear,thesnowatthecampgroundisalmostgonealreadyandtheforecastisforalotofwarmweathersocampingconditionsshouldbeexcel-lentinJune.Allthedetailshaven’tbeenfinalizedyetbutearlycamperscanexpectaFridaynightpotluckandtherewill be the usual “Buckaroo Breakfast” hosted by HomeEncampment#13onSundaymorning.Lastyear’sturnoutwas pretty good and they were rewarded with excellentweather.Thecampgroundownershavemademanysig-nificant improvements to thecampgroundsince theear-lieryearsandcontinuetomakeimprovementseveryyear.Therearefivecabinscurrentlyavailable(withalltheusual“necessities”)forthosewhodonothaveequipmenttoordo not wish to “rough it” but would like to enjoy the ca-maraderieofanODD FELLOW Weekend Tradition.Thecabinsrentfor$110.00andaccommodate6people.Thecabinsincludeonedoublebed,ahide-a-bed,andasetofbunkbeds.Togetalookatthecabinsandthecampgrounditselfyoucangototheirwebsiteatwww.buffaloruncamp-ground.comandselect“Features”. WehadagreattimeinSalmononApril14,2010,conferringtheDegreesto7newmembers.Theweatherwasgreataswellasthehospitality,althoughImustsaytherocksontheroadwereabitdisturbing. MemorialDay,originallycalledDecorationDay,isadayofremembranceforthosewhohavediedinournation’sservice.Therearemanystoriesastoitsactualbeginnings,withovertwodozencitiesandtownslayingclaimtobeingthebirthplaceofMemorialDay.Thereisalsoevidencethatorganizedwomen’sgroupsintheSouthweredecoratinggravesbeforetheendoftheCivilWar:ahymnpublishedin1867,“KneelWhereOurLovesareSleeping”byNellaL.Sweetcarriedthededication“ToTheLadiesoftheSouthwhoareDecoratingtheGravesoftheConfederateDead”(Source:DukeUniversity’sHistoricAmericanSheetMusic,1850-1920).WhileWaterlooN.Y.wasofficiallydeclaredthebirthplaceofMemorialDaybyPresidentLyndonJohnsoninMay1966,it’sdifficulttoproveconclusivelytheoriginsoftheday.Itismorelikelythatithadmanyseparatebeginnings;eachofthosetownsandeveryplannedorspontaneousgatheringofpeopletohonorthewardeadinthe1860’stappedintothegeneralhumanneedtohonorourdead,eachcontributedhonorablytothegrowingmovementthatculminatedinGenLogangivinghisofficialproclamationin1868.Itisnotimportantwhowastheveryfirst,whatisimportantisthatMemorialDaywasestablished.MemorialDayisnotaboutdivision.Itisaboutreconciliation;itisaboutcomingtogethertohonorthosewhogavetheirall.
MemorialDaywasofficiallyproclaimedon5May1868byGeneral JohnLogan,national commanderof theGrandArmyoftheRepublic,inhisGeneralOrderNo.11,andwasfirstobservedon30May1868,whenflowerswereplacedonthegravesofUnionandConfederatesoldiersatArlingtonNationalCemetery.Thefirststatetoofficiallyrec-ognizetheholidaywasNewYorkin1873.By1890itwasrecognizedbyallofthenorthernstates.TheSouthrefusedtoacknowledgetheday,honoringtheirdeadonseparatedaysuntilafterWorldWarI(whentheholidaychangedfromhonoringjustthosewhodiedfightingintheCivilWartohonoringAmericanswhodiedfightinginanywar).ItisnowcelebratedinalmosteveryStateonthelastMondayinMay(passedbyCongresswiththeNationalHolidayActof1971(P.L.90-363)toensureathreedayweekendforFederalholidays),thoughseveralsouthernstateshaveanadditionalseparatedayforhonoringtheConfederatewardead:January19inTexas,April26inAlabama,Florida,Georgia,andMississippi;May10inSouthCarolina;andJune3(JeffersonDavis’birthday)inLouisianaandTennessee.
