Box 359 Kooskia, ID 83539 (208) 459-2100 HAMMETT, IDAHO 83627 THE IDAHO ODD FELLOW REBEKAH NEWS FLOYD HENSLEY LEGIONNAIRE OF THE YEAR BEULAH EASTON TURNS 99 Friends and family of Beulah Easton met at Creek- side Residential Care Center in Jerome, on Sunday, March 28, 2010, to help Sister Beulah Easton celebrate her 99th birthday. Sister Beulah signed the member’s register of Sy- ringa Rebekah Lodge No, 110 on March 12, 1945 and was an active member until about three years ago. Beulah and the late George Easton raised on son and five daughters, all of whom joined either the Odd Fel- lows or Rebekahs. Sisters Shirley Shropshire, Jean Floyd, Wanda Bragg and Wilma Bragg remain active in Syringa. Submitted by Wanda Bragg Floyd Hensley, PGM, PGP and PDC of the Idaho Odd Fellows was presented with the prestigious ‘Legion- naire of the Year’ award at the annual Awards Banquet of Bonneville Post #56 of Idaho Falls, where he is Past Post Commander of the V. F. W. Floyd has 34 years of service and received the award for distinguished service on the County Memorial Team, providing military rites for all veterans. The team provides rites for well over a hundred funerals per year. Floyd rarely misses a call and is in charge of picking up, loading and returning the equipment; a work intense job to which he is very attentive. Congratulations Floyd!! The third week in March, Assembly President Ro-berta Joy Lee visited the three lodges in District 1. OnMonday,March15,at10:00a.m.shemetwithBingham#78.AlsovisitingwereJeanFloyd,RuthHarrisonandas-sociatememberWandaHays.FollowingthePresident’smessageonthewomenoftheBible,atableauonLydia,thefirstChristianconvertinEuropeand“asellerofpurple”whoassistedPaulandSilaswaspresented. Reader was Alice Mayer and Elaine Beyeler por-trayedLydia.LunchwasservedattheSeniorCitizensandgameswereplayed. Tuesdayevening,March16,PresidentRobertaJoytraveled toBlackfoot for themeetingofProgress#48attheChineserestaurant.Duetoillnesses,anopenmeet-ingwasnecessaryconductedbyNobleGrandCathyTou-saint..Programfortheeveningwasthesingingacappellaof thePresident’ssongsbyaguest. Outof townmem-bersvisitingwere:ShannonVieth,MattandAnnaBreezeofPocatello.AliceMayerandElaineBeyelerofAmericanFalls. Thursdayevening,March18,a roastporkandpotluck supper preceded the special meeting of Ivy #23 tohosttheAssemblyPresident.ThemeetingwasconductedbyNobleGrandShannonViethwithashortprogramon“AVirtuousWoman”takenfromProverbs30.PresentinghervirtuesweremembersAmandaRussell,SuzanSoles,andCrystalShepherd,whowereclothedinwhitesatinrobesand carried appropriate articles such as books, lamp,broomandetc. ThePresidentconcludedtheweekwiththeMeetingofDistricts1and2heldinAmericanFalls.(reportedelse-whereinthispaper).

PRESIDENT VISITS ZENITH 59

Wow !! The sun shined, the rain and wind disap-pearedandthe14thdayofAprilwasperfect. Zenith59wasveryhonoredtohostourPresidentJoyLee.Ween-joyed a leisurely lunch and pleasant conversation. Wewere honored to have 24 Rebekah sisters and brotherspresent.Thelodgepresentedourpresidentwithamon-etarygiftandawristcorsage.Itwasalsopassedthatwedonate the meetings silver drill money to the presidentsprojects. Wehonoredourdeskofficerswithamonetarygift and thank them for their dedication toadifficult job.ThePresidentgaveareadingonthe‘WomenoftheBible’whichweallenjoyed.Dessertwasenjoyedbysomeafter themeetingandthedayendedinfriendship,loveandtruth.JoyceWikse,reporter

DISTRICT 1 AND 2 CONSOLIDATE

District Meeting for Districts 1 & 2 was hosted byBinghamRebekahLodge#78intheAmericanFallsmeet-ingplaceatStJohnsEpiscopalChurch.About20sistersand10OddFellowswerepresent. NobleGrandKayBammertopenedthemeeting,andturnedthetimetotheCommitteeofElaineBeyeler,Chair-man;KayBammert,ViceChairman;andSecretaryAliceMayer. Rebekah Assembly President Roberta Joy Lee,VicePresidentJoAnnJohnston,andSecretaryVickiKielewere introducedandHonorsgiven.DistrictDeputyPres-identsVerlaRaeMortensonandAliceMayerwere thenintroducedandHonorsgiven. ElaineBeyeler,AssemblyOutsideGuardian,andKayBammert,HonorGuard,werealsointroduced. The Odd Fellow’s Meeting were honored to haveGrandMasterJamesWeighallandGrandSecretaryKen-nyAverillpresent.PGMMattBreezeconductedthemeet-ing. Afterarecessfor lunchconsistingof friedchicken,salads and dessert, a Joint Open Meeting of Odd Fel-lows and Rebekahs was held with Frank Lawyer actingas chairman. It was voted to recommend to the GrandLodgeandAssemblytheconsolidationofthetwodistricts,withmeetingplacesdeterminedby thehostingRebekahLodge.ThenewDistrict1will includelodgesatAshton,IdahoFalls,Blackfoot,Pocatello,andAmericanFallsandSodaSpringsOddFellows.ItwillcontinuetomeetonthethirdSaturdayofMarch.

We were honored to have the following attend aspecialmeetingonApril14thfortheDegreeRally.ThoseattendingwereBrothers: RalphCollins,Captain;JamesWeighall,GM;GenePola,Dept.GM;KennyAverill,GrandSecretary;GeorgeMcGaffick;RobertWeygandt,PGMandFredWise. MemorialDay,originallycalledDecorationDay,isadayofremembranceforthosewhohavediedinournation’sservice.Therearemanystoriesastoitsactualbeginnings,withovertwodozencitiesandtownslayingclaimtobeingthebirthplaceofMemorialDay.Thereisalsoevidencethatorganizedwomen’sgroupsintheSouthweredecoratinggravesbeforetheendoftheCivilWar:ahymnpublishedin1867,“KneelWhereOurLovesareSleeping”byNellaL.Sweetcarriedthededication“ToTheLadiesoftheSouthwhoareDecoratingtheGravesoftheConfederateDead”(Source:DukeUniversity’sHistoricAmericanSheetMusic,1850-1920).WhileWaterlooN.Y.wasofficiallydeclaredthebirthplaceofMemorialDaybyPresidentLyndonJohnsoninMay1966,it’sdifficulttoproveconclusivelytheoriginsoftheday.Itismorelikelythatithadmanyseparatebeginnings;eachofthosetownsandeveryplannedorspontaneousgatheringofpeopletohonorthewardeadinthe1860’stappedintothegeneralhumanneedtohonorourdead,eachcontributedhonorablytothegrowingmovementthatculminatedinGenLogangivinghisofficialproclamationin1868.Itisnotimportantwhowastheveryfirst,whatisimportantisthatMemorialDaywasestablished.MemorialDayisnotaboutdivision.Itisaboutreconciliation;itisaboutcomingtogethertohonorthosewhogavetheirall.

MemorialDaywasofficiallyproclaimedon5May1868byGeneral JohnLogan,national commanderof theGrandArmyoftheRepublic,inhisGeneralOrderNo.11,andwasfirstobservedon30May1868,whenflowerswereplacedonthegravesofUnionandConfederatesoldiersatArlingtonNationalCemetery.Thefirststatetoofficiallyrec-ognizetheholidaywasNewYorkin1873.By1890itwasrecognizedbyallofthenorthernstates.TheSouthrefusedtoacknowledgetheday,honoringtheirdeadonseparatedaysuntilafterWorldWarI(whentheholidaychangedfromhonoringjustthosewhodiedfightingintheCivilWartohonoringAmericanswhodiedfightinginanywar).ItisnowcelebratedinalmosteveryStateonthelastMondayinMay(passedbyCongresswiththeNationalHolidayActof1971(P.L.90-363)toensureathreedayweekendforFederalholidays),thoughseveralsouthernstateshaveanadditionalseparatedayforhonoringtheConfederatewardead:January19inTexas,April26inAlabama,Florida,Georgia,andMississippi;May10inSouthCarolina;andJune3(JeffersonDavis’birthday)inLouisianaandTennessee.

HOW TO OBSERVE MEMORIAL DAY The“Memorial”inMemorialDayhasbeenignoredbytoomanyofuswhoarebeneficiariesofthosewhohavegiventheultimatesacrifice.Oftenwedonotobservethedayasitshouldbe,adaywhereweactivelyrememberourancestors,ourfamilymembers,ourlovedones,ourneighbors,andourfriendswhohavegiventheultimatesacrifice:

*byvisitingcemeteriesandplacingflagsorflowersonthegravesofourfallenheroes.*byvisitingmemorials.*byflyingtheU.S.Flagathalf-staffuntilnoon.*byflyingthe‘POW/MIAFlag’aswell(Section1082ofthe1998DefenseAuthorizationAct).*byparticipatingina“NationalMomentofRemembrance”:at3p.m.topauseandthinkuponthetruemeaningoftheday,andforTapstobeplayed.*byrenewingapledgetoaidthewidows,widowers,andorphansofourfalleddead,andtoaidthedisabledveterans.

Thiswouldhelpgreatlytoreturnthesolemnmeaningbacktotheday,andtohelpreturnmindsandheartstothinkupontheultimatesacrificesmadebythoseinservicetoourcountry.Justonedayoutoftheyeartohonorourlovedones,ourancestors,ourfriendswhodiedinconflictsandwars--nottohonorwar,butthosethatdiedinthoseconflictsandwars.
