The summer months also mean that we are closing in on the upcoming Fed- eral Election and the rhetoric is certainly ramping up with the Harper Conserva- tives throwing everything at Canadians to hold onto power! In 2011, Harper used the recent re- cession to his advantage and every com- mercial was doused with the message that Harper and the Conservatives were the only party able to manage and main- tain the economy and that Canada was the best performing country of the G7. Well, what a difference 4 years makes, not to mention what a difference the price of oil makes! Our economy is still depressed, there are no good jobs to be had, unemployment is still at unaccept- able levels, especially in Windsor where we have the highest unemployment rate in the country and we are worse off today than we were 4 years ago! The recent budget is proof of the Harper Conservatives’ insatiable thirst to attempt to hang onto power with them throwing money at Canadians in the form of the child tax credit, which is not a bad thing for those families that need it, but why the hell do the wealthiest Canadians need that money when we have people living in poverty, seniors that have to use food banks to survive, our youth with the highest unemploy- ment rates in history and the very real threat of Harper removing 36 billion dol- lars in transfer payments to the provinces to maintain or Canadian Health Care sys- tem! There are many out there that will say, I want and deserve that Child Tax Credit regardless of how much money I make, but think of this, will that money cover the cost of Cancer treatments for a loved one if our Health Care system is forced into an American style pay as you use system. Will you be able to afford the cost of a broken leg or arm. It is esti- mated that if we had to pay out of pocket, an average hospital stay would cost $1,000.00 per day! If Harper or any other political party is allowed to reduce the Health Care transfers by 36 Billion Dol- lars, no amount of Child Tax Credit, in- come splitting, or any other scheme will help any of us offset the out of pocket cost of our Health Care. We have witnessed the attacks on Health Care with everything from user fees to private clinics to the threat of tak- ing away our Thoracic Surgery availabil- ity in Windsor. Imagine Ontario having to deal with a loss of approximately 18 Billion Dollars (our share) of transfer payments and then imagine what that means to our level of service and the availability of affordable Health Care in Ontario. II hope you are enjoying your summerwith family and friends and takingadvantage of the nice weather!The summer months also mean that

we are closing in on the upcoming Fed-eral Election and the rhetoric is certainlyramping up with the Harper Conserva-tives throwing everything at Canadiansto hold onto power!

In 2011, Harper used the recent re-cession to his advantage and every com-mercial was doused with the messagethat Harper and the Conservatives werethe only party able to manage and main-tain the economy and that Canada wasthe best performing country of the G7.Well, what a difference 4 years makes,not to mention what a difference theprice of oil makes! Our economy is stilldepressed, there are no good jobs to behad, unemployment is still at unaccept-able levels, especially in Windsor wherewe have the highest unemployment ratein the country and we are worse off todaythan we were 4 years ago!

The recent budget is proof of theHarper Conservatives’ insatiable thirst toattempt to hang onto power with themthrowing money at Canadians in the

This Government has been on a con-tinual drive to download costs and re-duce service and if we as Canadians givethem the opportunity, they will most cer-tainly destroy one of our most cherishedCanadian social programs and HealthCare as we know it, will be gone!

Sisters and Brothers, this is our time,our era and our fight and we need tocome together like never before to takeHarper on! We can't look at our seniorsand our youth at the end of the cam-paigning and say "We hope we did ourjob". We need to ensure that the mostsignificant election of our lifetime willbe one that we win for the better good ofall Canadians!

There will be a mass Health CareRally held on August 26th at the Cio-ciaro Club starting at 10:00 am. We willhear from experts on what the impact ofthe loss of transfer payments will be andwith the full support of all of us we willsend a message out from Windsor to therest of the country that we are preparedto fight to maintain our affordable, acces-sible and publicly funded health care sys-tem. Harper and any other politician thatschemes to reduce our Health Care sys-tem to an American style system will geta clear message that if they try it, theywill be removed from office!LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARDBY BEING THERE TO SUPPORTOUR HEALTH CARE!Auto Manufacturing

Our community and many othersacross the province have been trying toconvince both levels of government onthe need for a comprehensive, concreteAuto/ Manufacturing policy that willallow us to compete for investments inNorth America. Last year Ford an-nounced that a small engine programwas going to be awarded to Mexico in-stead of right here in Windsor because ofthe lack of support for Ford's needs byour provincial and federal governments.

Nobody likes to ask for hand-outs butthat is what it takes in our global realityand Mexico understands this along withthe United States and most other globalauto jurisdictions that know that it takesreal policy with an understanding of theglobal nature of investments to be ableto attract these types of major invest-ments and job creators.

Unifor has come up with a realistic,progressive and thoughtful documentlaying out our vision of what must bepart of any comprehensive Auto/Manu-facturing Policy. We have taken inputfrom many of the stakeholders and useddata to back up our arguments.

With every major manufacturing job

creating another 8 spin-off jobs, it is nowonder that these investment opportuni-ties are highly attractive and our govern-ment understands this but won't put theirmoney where their mouth is! The Na-tional web site will soon have the directlink to our discussion paper and our pol-icy.

WW hen I was a young ladback in grade school inthe late 60s and early 70s,

I can clearly remember my schoolmates arguing about many, manythings. Sometimes the argumentswould end up turning into a schoolyard fight (clearly those days weredifferent times). I always remem-ber the last words you would hearfrom one of the combatants beforethe swinging started. “Oh ya, whatare you going to do about it?”

My childhood is long gone nowbut there are still many “fights” toget involved in. It is just done in adifferent, non-physical way now,and it is certainly about different is-sues!

This fall we have what is prob-ably one of the most importantFederal Elections in the history ofour country taking place. In myopinion, there are many major is-sues that are important to all of us(as working people) that our cur-rent Federal Government is not

properly addressing. That needs tochange.

Our healthcare system is beingdecimated by all the budget cuts tothe provinces from the Feds. Ourcountry lacks an affordable na-tional childcare plan. We bleedgood manufacturing jobs every daybecause we lack a competitiveauto/manufacturing strategy. Wedesperately need a policy thatkeeps us on the same playing fieldas our competitors vying for workin other countries. We need to havea stronger CPP system in place tohelp Canadians when they reach re-tirement age. The list of things thatneed to change is endless… Thecurrent chef has fooled us with dif-ferent recipes for far too long nowand never been able to get it right.Time for a new chef!

I hear many people com-plain and state their opinions onwhat is going on in our country.My question is this, and it takes meback to my grade school days…

”What are you going to do aboutit?”

The pages in this magazine arefilled with facts and figures show-ing that the current government’spolicies are not doing what theyneed to d o . I am n o t g o i n gt o g o over/through them again inthis article, the facts speak loudlyfor themselves. They (the currentfederal government) are certainlynot doing what I believe they needto do to fix the problems, but arewe going to do what we need todo? What are you going to doabout it?

Please, please take some timeto get involved. Get educated, readup on the issues and make an in-formed choice. Volunteer some ofyour time for the candidate of yourchoice.

If we are not part of the solu-tion then we are the cause of theproblem, and we will have to livewith what we have created.

AA s you know by now, the HarperConservatives have droppedthe ‘writ’ triggering the cam-

paign period for the upcoming October19th election; thus making it thelongest in 90 years, eleven weeks in-stead of the traditional five weeks.

Elections Canada estimates that atraditional 37-day campaign, the min-imum required by law, would costroughly $375 million to the federalgovernment in administration fees.Now that the writ has been dropped,the official election campaigning com-mences and the political parties willapply pressure to Canadians to supporttheir initiatives. Fair Elections Act

Last year, the Conservative Gov-ernment introduced their poorly namedbill, “The Fair Elections Act”. Thispiece of legislation had a number ofitems buried deep within it. Whilemost attention focused on the fact thatit made it harder, if not impossible, formillions of Canadians to be able tovote. It did this by nullifying the his-torically used system of vouching forindividuals that do not have a perma-nent address as one example. It alsointroduced the fixed election date ofOctober 19th and held some interest-ing ‘election time’ proposals that mostpeople paid no attention to.By The Numbers

A campaign that runs for 37 dayswill see spending limits of $28 milliondollars per federal party campaign.With the extension of the campaign toa total of 78 days, you would think theparties have to stretch their dollars fur-ther over this extended period of time.However this is not the case. In fact,the Fair Elections Act says that forevery day over the 37-day traditional

campaign period, a party will be ableto spend approximately $685,000 perday more. When we do the math thatmeans a new spending limit of $53million dollars based on the 78 daysthis election covers.Why does it matter?

You may be asking why this mat-ters to you? After all, political partiesare responsible for their own financingduring an election right? The answeris ‘kind of’. They are definitely re-sponsible for their own fundraising, towhich the Conservatives are betterthan anyone else. In fact they are thebest by far and raise tens of millions ofdollars more than the other partiesprior to an election. Did you know thatas a taxpayer, you and I pay 50% backto all the parties once the election cam-paign starts?

That is correct, once the PrimeMinister ‘dropped the writ’, the elec-tion campaign had begun and everysingle dollar spent by the parties be-come reimbursable by 50%. So, if theConservatives spend the limit of $53million dollars, the taxpayers are onthe hook for $26.5 million as a reim-

bursement to the party. This does noteven take into account what the otherparties will get back as reimburse-ments.

So, to recap this, the Conservativeshave the most in fundraising. Theywill outspend the other two partiescombined in this election based ontheir large corporate donors. The tax-payer will pay 50% of their entire bill,so essentially, every attack ad you seeon television until October 19th, you,the taxpayer, paid half the cost.

Setting things upfor the Future

Many people believe that PrimeMinister Harper is setting the Conser-vatives up to be even more dangerousin the future by having the ability toget so much back from the taxpayer.Think about this.

Let us assume the next election infour years will be a traditional 37-daycampaign. That will mean the Conser-vatives will have a spending limit of$28 million dollars. After the 2015

election, the Conservatives will get arebate cheque of $26.5 million dollarsmeaning that we the taxpayer, have al-most singlehandedly paid for that fu-ture election and they do not have toworry about fundraising.

With the wealthiest of individualsand corporations backing them, it isnot hard to see that the Conservativeswish to begin a campaign early to de-plete the resources of the other politi-cal parties. My hope is that Canadiansrecognize the attacks on their rightsand freedoms by the Conservativesover the past decade. Their record in-cludes demonstrating their hiddenagenda to pick winners or losers bysigning many free trade agreements,selling our jobs, all the while disman-tling and disintegrating our basic val-ues surrounding public health care,moving towards a privatization model,destroying environmental controls ,diminishing workers rights and re-ducing the standard of living for allworking class people.

Workers’ PrioritiesIt is important to remember what

our priorities, as workers are when wego to the ballot box. Many membershave a difficult time relating politics tothe work of the union but it is inter-laced at many levels. Take for in-stance, the economy. When theeconomy was in bad shape during therecess ion of 2008/09 andChrysler approached the Governmentfor loans (loans that were all paid backahead of schedule unlike bank bailoutsthat were never repaid), they, the Con-servatives, made a big show of ‘play-ing tough’ with labour unions anddemanding further concessions of theworkers before they would lend themoney.

Manufacturing in this country is animmensely important industry that hasbeen a lifeblood to hundreds of thou-

sands of working Canadians fordecades, yet the Conservative Govern-ment, led by Stephen Harper and lo-cally, Jeff Watson were willing to letthe industry die. If not die, they weredefinitely willing and anxious to takethings away from workers to makethem feel agitated and insecure at atime that true leadership would havebeen to instil hope and confidence.

We would ask you to consider afew things. What would $15 a daychild care mean to working families inthis country? Is it important for goodjobs to be here for our children? Dowe want to ensure we have security inretirement not just for ourselves butalso for our friends, family and othersin the community? When you get tothe answers to these questions and ifthat answer is yes, then the Conserva-tives are not the party for our future inCanada. Have a look below to seesome of the things that happened underthe Stephen Harper regime.

• Moving towards US-style (privatefor-pay) heath care

$2.2 billion investment to facilitate thelaunch of the next generation minivan,we as a membership need to reflectand appreciate the fact that we gavethis company the tools it needed forsuccess.

When we came out of the 2009bankruptcy there was a tremendousamount of uncertainty about the plantand our future. With the entire auto in-dustry in jeopardy we were mandatedby the Government to take cuts to ourcollective agreement. As well, wewere forced to embrace changes to ourtraditional work culture, which werecontroversial to say the least.

Now it is our opportunity to holdthe company accountable to providethe resources needed to implement theprocess they have dictated to us.

We as a membership were held ac-countable to embrace the WCM prin-ciples, which in turn helped us EARNinvestment. It is now our turn to holdthe Company accountable to the pillarsof WCM as dictated to us by them.

Our collective futures at FCA willbe determined, in the long run, by in-vestment and this $2 billion is a greatstart and should allow us some sense

The Guest Services department hascreated a new computer program totrack the rotation of the GSR and thecommittee feels this should fix theconcerns that have been raised over thelack of fair rotation. The committeewill continue to monitor the rotation tomake sure everything continues to runsmoothly.

The workplace committee is con-tinuously trying to address the con-cerns with management regardingstaffing levels. They are having anumber of concerns from differentclassifications where workers not get-ting (or taking) their breaks. The col-lective agreement clearly states thatmembers are entitled to breaks; whenit is time for your break, please notifyyour supervisor so that you can takeyour much deserved break period. Ifyou are having issues with manage-ment not providing you with yourbreak, please call your representative.Point Edward Casino

Your Bargaining Committee hasdone a tremendous job of capturing allof your issues, writing the proposedlanguage and presenting the non-mon-etary issues to the OLG. Vice Presi-dent Doug Boughner, your BargainingCommittee along with myself, havejust recently wrapped a week longround of bargaining in Brantford On-tario with all the Unifor representedOLG facilities. All of these sites votedand unanimously agreed upon themost important core issues and mainpriorities for all of our Unifor repre-sented OLG workers. With the govern-ments “Modernization Plan” fastapproaching, we all recognize thatPensions, Benefits, Scope of Work,

However, we cannot getcomplacent and must recognize that ifGovernments don’t enact Trade Legis-lation that helps Canadian manufactur-ers, we will surely be on the losing endof investment decisions in the future.This is just one more reason we needto ensure our vote counts in the up-coming October 19th election.Caesars Windsor

Recently, Chairperson Dana Dun-phy and the workplace committee metwith Caesars on the idea of offeringearly retirement packages to our eligi-ble members.

They will be having a follow upmeeting later in August to see if pack-ages can be implemented and managedwith in depth conversation on this pro-posal. This would be a great benefitand opportunity to the entire member-ship and would allow those who wantto retire the ability to do so. At thesame time any retirements that comefrom this proposal will preserve juniorjobs and add a sense of security tothose members.

The new employee dining room(EDR) has reopened with a number ofconcerns being raised by the member-ship and the committee. Just a few ofthe issues are:• Items are overpriced,• The menu does not change, • The cost (and mere charging) of

and Full Time to Part Time Ratios arethe most important common issuesfacing our members today. The Point Edward bargaining com-

mittee will be back at the bargainingtable to deal with all of the local issuesSept 8th - 11th. We have high expec-tations to close out these issues duringthat time. On September 17th and18th, the main table group will be backat the bargaining table to deal with thecore issues raised above. Finally, ourgoal will be to conclude on September22nd and 23rd. All of this bargainingis extremely difficult as the OLG isdoing their best to make all contractsseem as inexpensive as possible undertheir “Modernization Plan” forprospective buyers. It has been a longroad but we sincerely ask for your sup-port and solidarity over the next fewmonths, as it is imperative to show theOLG that our members are united anddeserve a fair and respectable collec-tive agreement.

Health Care RallyWith the recent decision of the

Harper Government to cut $36 billionin Health Care transfer payments to theProvinces, Canadians should be verynervous as to the future state of theprogram. This is a program that hasbeen cherished by millions of peoplefor over 53 years and is now in jeop-ardy of becoming a U.S. style, pay-as-you-go system. Let me be clear, thecontinued privatization of our healthcare system in Canada will impactevery single person in this countrynegatively. With soaring costs in theUnited States, health care bankruptciesare commonplace. I was a little dismayed walkingthrough the parking lot during OURunion picnic and seeing all the for-eign built vehicles in the lot. MaybeI am a little old school in my think-ing - but folks if everyone bought aforeign built vehicle we would beout of a job.

We are all aware that in today’sglobal economy some parts on do-mestic cars are from overseas, andeven some models are assembledelsewhere. But the fact remains thata nation that abandons its core man-ufacturing base is committing itselfto economic dependence on overseascorporations and countries.

It is the union (in this case automanufacturing) in North America'sBig Three that believes in a higherWORTH of its workers, (reflected insalary, benefits, etc.). This is whywe support Big Three auto. For wesupport higher worth for Workers. Itmust have been the week I was

having, but shortly after the picnic Isaw a local elected official driving aNissan Van. A direct competitor toour minivan? Are you kidding me?What message are you sending toyour neighbours and to your com-munity?

I decided to send him a message,on behalf of all the working brothersand sisters who work hard in connec-tion to our van! Many of us are de-pendent on that van and when I sawthat elected official in that van Icould not help but consider it a totalslap to our membership, our familiesand our communities’ faces. UAW contract talks-Payment is due

Contract talks could not come ata better time. The Big Three’s bot-tom line is healthy and billions arebeing made. Like us, those workersbegan making sacrifices seven yearsago to help these corporations getout of the trouble they got them-selves into. Like us they will belooking to be fairly compensated forthose sacrifices. Payment is due. Imust admit every time the UAW ne-gotiates I have hope, but they alwaysseem to let me down.

Stephen Harper's re-election strat-egy depends on a lot of you not vot-ing. And if you mess with his plan byshowing up at the polling station onElection Day, he's prepared for that,too: he's made it a lot harder for youto vote.

The prime minister has made itso much harder that "many tens ofthousands" of Canadians may be de-nied their constitutional right to casta ballot in the upcoming federal elec-tion, according to Harry Neufeld, for-mer chief electoral officer for BritishColumbia.

Harper has mostly managed toavoid being accused of Republican-style voter suppression, and the law-suits, among other tactics, employedto challenge voting lists stateside. Butrecent changes to Canada's electionlaws under the so-called Fair Elec-tions Act will make it considerablymore difficult for many low-incomeand marginalized Canadians to exer-cise their constitutional right. Thatcould help Harper get re-elected inwhat is shaping up to be an extremelyclose election in October and why itis vital for our members and theirfamilies, friends, neighbours to getout and vote.

According to the groups, a mere6,201 votes across 14 ridings handedthe Conservative party a majority in2011. Even though he's had the sup-port of less than 40 per cent of Cana-dians, Harper has held power foralmost a decade by focusing on get-ting out the vote among his loyal

base, who tend to be older and moreaffluent.

The Conservatives put the newelection laws in place ostensibly inresponse to the national outcry overthe robocall scandal, in which partyoperatives were accused of using au-tomated phone calls to direct non-Conservative voters to the wrongpolling stations on election day. Themisleading calls were reported in rid-ings across the country and appearedto be targeted based on informationfrom closely guarded Conservativeparty data.

MOTORCITY CHRYSLER - Oneand two units reached a tentativeagreement on Thursday, April 23,2015. Bargaining went right to thewire, as we were deadlined for Sun-day, April 26, 2015, at 12:01 a.m.Therefore the Technicians toolswould have had to be removed on theFriday, April 24, 2015.

We had done a marathon of bar-gaining throughout that week, whichincluded until midnight WednesdayApril 22, 2015. On a couple of occa-sions the employer would walk awayand we were prepared to strike thisfacility if necessary. We had alreadyscheduled an information/ratificationmeeting for 5:00 p.m. for Unit 1 and8:00 p.m. for Unit 2, as it appeared anagreement was not going to be had.However, at 4:45 p.m. the Companyfinally came to the plate to get us towhere the bargaining committees feltthey needed to be in order to achievea tentative agreement that wouldpass. We brought both tentativeagreements reached and the follow-ing highlights.

LL abour Day is more than a dayoff. It is a time to celebratethe key role that workers play

in building our economy. It is also atime to come together as a labourcommunity and reflect on what isneeded to enhance the well-being ofall workers and their families. Thefailing economy and the govern-ment’s austerity programs have ledto layoffs, contracting out, and theprivatization of public services.Families are struggling to make endsmeet while the rich are getting richer.

The government has underminedthe work of the labour movement,they have interfered with collectivebargaining and attacked unions. ThisLabour Day, let’s make a commit-ment to fight for change, let’s ensurethat all workers have the right to fairwages, that older workers can retirewith dignity and that seniors andfamilies have access to the healthcare they deserve.

Let’s make a commitment to be-come involved in the upcoming Fed-eral election.

Canada’s Federal 42nd generalelection is scheduled to occur Octo-ber 19, 2015. Harper’s majority gov-ernment has failed Canada in anumber of areas. As JohnCartwright, the president of theToronto and York Region LabourCouncil stated in an article to theStar.com. “This government hasoverseen the largest privatization ofmunicipal services in Canada’s his-tory through requirements that allmajor infrastructure projects be car-ried out as “public-private partner-ships.”

They have refused to renew theCanada Health Accord and are cut-ting $36 billion from health care

funding across Canada. Although theConservatives have been retreatingon some aspects of the TemporaryForeign Worker Program, they ush-ered in a massive expansion of theprogram that both exploit migrantworkers and undermine local wagestandards.” Let me expand on anumber of these issues:HEALTH: On March 32, 2014 theCanada Health Accord expired andthe Harper government failed torenew the agreement. The accord isan agreement between the Federalgovernment and the provinces andterritories which provides stablefunding and sets national standardsfor health care. It also sets goals forwait times, home care, prescriptiondrugs and primary care. Without anagreement the provinces and territo-ries could lose over 36 billion infunding. This will impact the avail-ability of programs, services andsupports available in our community.JOBS: Most of the jobs that havebeen created under this government

are part-time and precarious. In a re-cent report prepared by the UniforResearch Department economistsJim Stanford and Jordan Brennan,which compared the performance ofthe economy under current and pastprime ministers, revealed that sincethe Harper government was electedthe total employment has only in-creased at an annual average of only1.0% per year. The unemploymentrate has averaged 7.1 % under thisgovernment which is the 6th worstamong Post-War Prime Ministers. Interms of youth, in 2014 there wereless youth working than in 2006.This is impacting the ability of fam-ilies to meet their basic needs.ECONOMIC RECORD: In2006 when Harper was elected, theunemployment rate was 6.6 %, cur-rently it is 6.8% and increasing. Wehave lost over 400,000 manufacturingjobs. This has impacted the availabilityof good jobs as well as people’s spend-ing power which in turn impacts oureconomy. We need a government that is

committed to building an economythat sustains jobs with decent wagesfor the next generation.RETIREMENT SECURITY:

A large portion of Canadiansdon’t have access to a pension planwhile those who have pension planshave been negatively impacted bythe recession. In 2013, the govern-ment voted against an NDP motionto expand the pension plan and hasstated that any mandatory expansionof the pension plan would kill jobs,hurt the economy and burden fami-lies with extra costs. This past May,the government “flip-flopped” on theissue and announced that they arelooking into an expansion. But thisrecent announcement was short ofspecifics, it simply stated that overthe summer the government wouldbe consulting experts on "options"for allowing voluntary contributionsto the CPP. Their position is thatCanadians should take it upon them-selves to save their own money forretirement. This stand is not takinginto consideration all those Canadi-ans who work in part-time and inprecarious jobs. Without adequateretirement income, we will see an in-crease in reduced living standardsfor seniors as well as an increase inseniors’ poverty.

Is this an acceptable track recordof a government that says that theycare about Canada and Canadians?Over the next few months, becomefamiliar with the platforms of the po-litical parties and their position onthese critical issues. Before castingyour vote this fall, reflect on these is-sues and make your vote count. Let’sstand together to enhance the well-being of workers and their families.

TT he Harper Conservatives havecontinually stated that HealthCare is a priority for them

however their actions prove to thecontrary. From the constant down-loading of services and the elimina-tion of over $36 billion dollars intransfer payments to the Provinces,we should be able to see exactlywhat their priorities are and it is cer-tainly not to public Health Care.

The so-called Mega Hospitalbeing located on County Road 42 issupposed to help us in this regionwith our wait times, more beds andsupposedly, increased services.However, how can we even considerthis based on today’s needs when itis going to take upwards of ten yearsbefore it is even in place? By thetime the new Hospital is created, wecould very well, have a whole newset of issues and problems related toHealth Care in the region.

If we compound our wait timeissues at area hospitals that will takea decade to fix and add the long-termbed shortage; we are certainly ap-proaching, if not already in a crisis.Currently over 800 people in theWindsor/Essex region are awaitinglong-term care beds, a staggeringnumber in a time when we shouldhave the best, most well fundedHealth Care system in the world.

Government leadership isneeded on this issue, Health Care isa priority to every single Canadianand if we do not stand up and speakto the importance of keeping it Uni-versal we will be in for a terrible pri-vatized system that will resemblethat of the United States. In 2007Harvard University did a study thatconcluded that 60% of all personalbankruptcies in the United States

were due to Health Care bills. Ac-cording to the American Journal ofMedicine, in 2007 (the latest dataavailable), there were over 118,000bankruptcies in the U.S. during the3-month period of January to April,of which 60% or over 70,000 weredue to Health Care bills. Is this thevision for Canada that we want?The Harper Government took our

money from the Health Care system($36 billion dollars) to pay downtheir inflated deficit going into anelection period so that they wouldlook like they were good ‘stewardsof the economy’. Now those healthcare costs transfer to the Provincesthat will need to be made up by ei-ther raising taxes or eliminating ser-v i c e s . I n t h i s p r o c e s s , t h eConservatives have found a way tomake it look like the problems are at

the Provincial level when it liessquarely with them.

The lesson here? Get out andvote and let’s hold our elected repre-sentatives to account for their deci-sions, especially when it comes toour most precious of values, ourpublicly funded, universal healthcare system.

FISHING TOURNAMENTAnother successful fishing tour-

One Step in the right direction couldinvolve modifying benefit packages toinclude mental health days as a part ofsick day allotment; keeping into consid-eration that employees identified with amental illness will, almost certainly,need the use of more sick time than anemployee that does not fall into the cat-egory for a mental health diagnosis.

It is rather evident to me, that mentalhealth does increase the need of sicktime used by an employee. Without em-ployers having an understanding andworking with the employees, there is amuch higher risk of short/long term dis-ability claims, work performance issuesand further negative outcomes thatcould have otherwise been prevented.

Sick day or health day? Physical ormental health, attention to illness is re-quired to prevent worsening symptoms;both should be treated without discrim-ination to eliminate stigmas in the work-place.

Mental health problems need to berecognized in relation to sickness ab-sence, rehabilitation and prevention inall diagnosis.

Time for ChangeIf you haven’t felt the effects yet,

You read it correctly. The Conser-vative Federal government continues toannounce devastating health care cuts of$36 billion over 10 years, as well as anadditional $16.5 billion cut to healthcare equalization payments.

one that everyone has access to – fornow. Every life matters in every corner and itis not only our duty as Canadian citi-zens, but also as human beings to pro-tect one another… Make no mistake, weare under attack.

there is a stigma to recharge/heal yourmind? Workers with mental health ill-nesses can be just as productive as otherworkers if they have access to the rightsupports. The understanding of mentalhealth having a direct cause and effecton work performance and sick timeused is often overlooked; however, it isa leading cause of disability around theworld.

Statistics show that people sufferingfrom severe mental health problems areabsent from work 12.1 days more thanthose without such problems; whereasindividuals with moderate mental healthproblems still had a higher absence of3.54 days per year than those withoutsuch problems. In the long run, to takea day off to balance the mind is benefi-cial to both the employee and the em-ployer. A sick day is a preventativehealth measure; nurturing both the bodyand mind are key to avoiding worst-casescenarios, such as mental breakdowns,stress leaves, suicidal ideations, etc.

An employee with a previous dis-ability claim is almost seven times morelikely to have another disability claim

83% of employees believe theyshould disclose their diagnosisto their employer, but 31% feltthat their supervisor would notbe understanding or supportive.

Roger Kersey turned 100 on July13th. Roger is a Local 240 retiree outof the Ford Motor Company - OfficeUnit. Roger was hired at Ford MotorCompany in production and be-longed to Local 200. He then took ajob in scheduling teletype and waslater asked to move to the office as aLocal 240 member, where heworked in Export Supply. Rogerworked for Ford Motor Company for35 years and has now been retiredfor 40 years. A birthday celebrationwas held in July at the RiversideSportsmen Club. HAPPY BIRTH-DAY ROGER!

They continue to at-tack Unions, make cuts to healthcare, and sign one-sided trade deals.We need to focus on electing a gov-ernment that will have the best inter-ests of Canadians in mind, agovernment that is committed to cre-ating good jobs, with strong indus-tries, sustainable health care, and iscommitted to creating a secure futurefor all Canadians. Unit Reports:Accurcast

This Unit remains busy, with anumber of outstanding grievances. A3rd step meeting was held in July.The Committee, along with the Na-tional Representative and LocalPresident are continuing to work toget these issues resolved.

AutolivAutoliv continues to be busting at

the seams, and is now at capacity.All new looms have arrived and con-tinue to be installed. Since Februaryof 2014 Autoliv has seen 51 newhires. Chairperson Paula Carson andher committee continue to provideexcellent representation to the mem-bership.Hudson Manor

Hudson Manor continues to havelow occupancy. As a result of this,there will be restructuring of hoursand layoffs in September. The cur-rent CBA expires in December of2015. The Committee continues toprovide great leadership to the mem-bers at Hudson Manor.

Mahle Filter SystemsNew equipment has recently ar-

rived and is being installed. This

summer has proven to be one of thebusiest at Mahle. Assembly lines arebeing relocated to make room for in-coming programs; there continues tobe a number of trials and launch ac-tivity. Current population is 161members with an additional 40 stu-dents/labour pool, which is provid-ing the membership with vacationreplacement.Tilbury ManorNursing Home

This unit’s collective agreementremains expired. The parties met inMay for conciliation, and were un-able to reach an agreement. We arecurrently in the process of choosingan arbitrator, and hope to have anagreement in place as soon as possi-ble. Tilbury Manor has also experi-enced a low concensus, whichresulted in the cancellation of a num-ber of temporary posting.

TT his is my first article for TheGuardian magazine since ac-claiming the President’s po-

sition in the spring and I would liketo express my sincere thanks for theleadership and experience that GaryTaylor brought to Unifor Local1498. All the best to Gary and hisfamily in their future endeavours inhis retirement! With Gary’s retire-ment I have some big shoes to filland will be working hard to do thebest to serve the active and retiredmembers of our local, especiallywith 2016 Big 3 bargaining loomingon the horizon. I also want to take amoment and congratulate our Exec-utive Board for acclaiming their po-sitions. I’m proud to be workingwith a great group of people, andwhile there will be a lot of work todo, this group of people will get itdone.

This October 19th, Canadianshave a chance to make a change byvoting for a new government. Asyou’ve probably been reading inother articles, it’s plain to see thatCanada needs a change in leader-ship. The Harper government hashad its time, 10 long years at thehelm, and now Canada needs newleadership to take over and start fix-ing the damage that has been done.

There are huge issues each partyneeds to address. Having a NationalAutomotive Strategy is one of theimportant issues our union is inter-ested in but it does not stop there.It’s also about having a strategy toaddress the disappearance of goodpaying jobs not only in the automo-tive sector, but manufacturing ingeneral, the health care sector and

many other industries. Young peo-ple can’t find jobs after spendingyears in school and find themselveswith loans they can’t afford to pay.Giving corporations tax breaks in thehopes of creating jobs doesn’t work– business just pockets the moneyfor themselves’ and the only bene-factors are the CEOs and stockhold-ers. Our next government mustwork with each industry and theunion and all the stakeholders to de-velop new strategies to makeCanada’s economy stronger and vi-able.

Health care is an issue that af-fects every Canadian, yet we neverget fired up about it until it’s too late.The latest issue is the Harper govern-ment’s decision to cut $36 billion infunding to the provinces health care.If this cut goes through, it means thatthe provincial governments will haveto cut health care services or raisetaxes to make up the shortage causedby the federal cuts. Aren’t we alltired of having to wait for whatseems forever in emergency roomsjust to see a doctor or wait weeks tomonths to get an MRI or other scan-ning/testing done? How are thesecuts going to affect those who needit the most – our aging population?

We need a federal governmentthat will meet with the provinces andrenew the Canada Health Accordand commit to improve its share ofhealth funding. We need a federalgovernment that builds up publichealth care to provide for the needs

of Canadians and not privatize it forprofit. We need a federal govern-ment that will create a national drugcoverage program that will savemoney that can be put towards betterand safer care and medications. Weneed a federal government that pro-tects Medicare for all with a plan thatprovides for chronic care and long-term needs of seniors and otherCanadians.

Canada’s public health care pro-gram has been a source of nationalpride, but it has taken a hit underHarper’s government. It’s time toelect a federal government that willrestore that pride into this program.

To help with this issue, there willbe an Educational Health Care Rallyheld on August 26th between 10 amand noon at the Ciociaro Club.Please attend to show your supportfor this important election issue.

These issues are only a coupleof the very many important issuesthat will be a part of the upcomingelection. If any of these issues areimportant to you, you need to haveyour voice heard. The only way todo that is to get out and vote.

According to Statistics Canada,in the last election held in 2011,voter turnout averaged 61% of thepopulation. It was also shown thateligible voters aged 18-24 had avoter turnout of 49.7% and votersaged 25-34 had a voter turnout of55.4%.

Young adults need to be encour-aged to show up and vote. If youhave children, nieces, nephews orgrandchildren that are of voter agemake it a family experience and takethem to the polls. It is going to betheir future as much as ours that isgoing to be affected. Without vot-ing, your voice is not going to beheard and change will not happen.So on October 19th make your voicebe heard and get out and vote!

CC urrently at Hiram Walker’s wehave no members on layoff. Thecompany has hired four new

members that have gotten their senioritylate last year and has hired six more inJune of this year. We also currently have10 students working, who are all mem-bers’ children. They will be workinguntil the end of August. The company isgoing to be hiring more hopefully soon,we still experience manpower shortagesat times and some postings are going un-filled. We have had 18 members retire sofar, since the union bargained retirementincentive packages for many employeesin 2014. More packages will be available

to members in 2016 and 2017.This was done to gain job security

for the current workforce and hasworked to this date. Additionally theunion has negotiated a longer grow-inperiod to get to full wage and hopefullywe are now seeing the upside to this bythe company attracting new productsinto the plant, hiring and creating newjobs for people in our community. Also,we will be going to a second shift in Bot-tling, Shipping and Receiving andBlending in mid-August to keep up withorders.

The company has recently had a jobfair at the Caboto Club (July 30/15).

They stated that they are going to be hir-ing twenty new employees and over2500 people in the community showedup for a chance to get hired.

The new products and the new line inthe bottling room are running well. It hasadded a challenge for all departmentswith so many different flavors of liquorsand I’d like to commend all the membersfor stepping up and successfully transi-tioning these new products into ourplant. A JOB WELL DONE!

The federal election is upon us and itis an opportunity to let the Harper Gov-ernment know, that we have had enoughof attacking workers and wages. Enoughdownsizing public services! Our econ-omy has performed the worst underStephen Harper than any other govern-ment in our post war history. The Harpergovernment plans to decrease provincialheath care by $36 billion over a decade,ignoring the needs of the aging popula-tion and risking that health serviceswon’t be available for you and your fam-ily when you need them. More seniorshave been forced into poverty by theHarper Conservatives’ failure to makenecessary increases to the Canadian Pen-sion Plan (CPP), Old Age Security(OAS) and Guaranteed Income Supple-ment (GIS). Thanks to all the membersfor filling out your “I WILL VOTE”pledge cards. Please make sure to vote. Labour Day parade is coming quickly.

FEDERAL ELECTIONSFAST APPROACHINGAs you are all aware, the FederalElections are fast approaching and

we are all working tirelessly to ensure that we will electa Government that will work on behalf of working peo-ple like you and I. The National has put in place RegionalCo-ordinators to work with our Locals at ensuring wereach all our members and outline the importance of theissues facing us and the concerns we have with the Gov-ernment in place today. The National has promoted cam-paigns to educate our members on the numerouschallenges we have and the issues facing us and to giveus the tools we need to engage our members to make achange in solutions. The importance of voting has beenhighlighted and we have tried to communicate that andremind everyone how important your vote is. With somany issues facing Canadians from good jobs to healthcare and issues facing our seniors to mention a few, theneed for changing Government is crucial.

CANADIAN COUNCIL At the time of writing this article, preparations are

already concluded for the Canadian Council being heldon August 21-23 in Montreal. Under our new Uniforstructure Canadian Council is only held once per year. Itis a great opportunity for our Canadian Council delegatesto attend not only this council but all of the related in-dustry council meetings and various other committeemeetings. It will be well attended by our Local UnionsDelegates.

WW e are at a proverbial fork inthe road. We all have the op-portunity to decide which

road to take by voting in the FederalElection on October 19.

The Harper Conservative govern-ment has been driving the bus calledCanada down a crumbling dead endroad that is polluted, getting hotter anddevastated by climate change. The busis going to run out of fuel!

The rich get richer and our childrenand future generations are facinggreatly diminished lives.To change direction we must changedrivers!

The other fork leads to a sustain-able economy and environment andhope for future generations.

Harper claims to be a good stewardof the economy but he is like a recklessLas Vegas gambler playing roulettewith our economy. He let Canada’seconomic “chips” ride on one number,high priced oil. The ball didn’t stop onblack and we are left with no manufac-turing jobs, a recession and a crashingloonie!

Harper blew the opportunity to di-versify the economy through GreenEnergy, conservation, and o thersustainabi l i ty measures . Harperis a job killer!

In addition to the worst record onthe economy since 1960, Harper hasthe worst record on the environment,eliminating or cutting funding to 26Government and Civil Society organi-zations working to protecting ourhealth and our environment.

We can’t have a strong, sustainableeconomy without a sustainable envi-ronment. All economic activity is gen-erated from our natural resources.There are no Jobs on a dead planet!

We need to make sure that a newfederal government attends the COP21 Climate Summit in November.

Good, Green Jobs Now!Unifor Canadian Council recom-

mended support for Sustainable Devel-opment, action on climate change anda National Transportation strategy, in-cluding mass transit and High SpeedRail.

Windsor activists joined a massive“Jobs, Justice and Climate” rallyheld by unionists, including Unifor,environmentalists and activiststhrough the streets of Toronto. Therally attracted some 10,000 people andactor and activist Jane Fonda and au-thor Naomi Klein spoke.

Unifor National President JerryDias told a Climate Summit of theAmericas panel that protecting andrestoring our environment and fightingclimate change will help create goodjobs in Canada, “Our long-run eco-nomic stability depends on building asustainable relationship with nature,”Dias told a panel on Greening Trans-portation during the Summit. “Weneed what nature provides: resources,space, land, air, and water. Especiallyin Canada, we understand the eco-nomic importance of our resources.”

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

At this time of my retirement as theMember of Parliament for Windsor-Tecumseh, I reflect on the role that thelabour movement has played in my per-sonal, professional and political life. Ihave long believed that a vibrant labourmovement is fundamental to a function-ing democracy. That is very true of theactive role that the UAW, the CAW andnow Unifor has performed in Canada.

We have had many struggles. We haveaccomplished much. We have madeCanada a better country. It is obviousthat there is still much to do. I think ofthe need to strengthen the manufactur-ing sector and create more stable jobs.Much still needs to be done to improveour health care system and protect ourenvironment and our civil liberties.

As I look to the future, it is my sincerebelief that the labour movement andmore specifically Unifor, will activelyparticipate in making Canada an evenbetter country. I encourage all of you,both individually and collectively to re-main actively engaged on the issues ofthe day. Unifor and its members havethe skills and expertise to provide lead-ership in resolving these issues for thebetterment of our country and futuregenerations.

My partnership with Unifor has alwaysbeen based on social democratic princi-ples. We have attempted to guide

A Personal Message . . .ourselves based on what we judged was inthe best interests of the membership andmy constituents. From the time I first ranfor public office until today we have walkedhand in hand, we have fought the goodfight, we have made a difference.

At a more personal level, I will miss themany friendships I have been so privilegedto have formed with members of Unifor.Many of these relationships have inspiredme both in my professional role as a lawyerat the Legal Plan and as a Member of Parlia-ment. I hope that these will continue as Imove forward into my retirement.

I take this opportunity to thank my wifeMaureen and our children for all their loveand support. Maureen and I are looking for-ward to spending a great deal of time withour seven grandchildren.

I wish all of you a peace-filled andprosperous future.

If you have beenswallowing the rhetoricabout Conservativesnaturally being the ‘besteconomic managers’,then these results aregoing to shock you.

For seven of the sixteen indicators, the Harper government ranks last (or tied for last) among thenine postwar Prime Ministers. In six more cases, it ranks (or is tied) second-last. Among the re-maining three indicators, the Harper government never ranks higher than sixth out of nine.Considering the overall average ranking of each Prime Minister (across all sixteen indicators), theHarper government receives an average ranking of 8.05 out of a worst-possible 9.0. That is deadlast among the nine postwar governments, and by a wide margin – falling well behind the second-worst government, which was the Mulroney Conservative regime of 1984-93.The very poor economic record of the Harper government cannot be blamed on the fact that Canadaexperienced a recession in 2008-09. In fact, Canada experienced a total of ten recessions duringthe 1946-2014 period. Most governments had to grapple with recession at some point during theirtenures – and some Prime Ministers had to deal with more than one. Instead, statistical evidenceshows that the recovery from the 2008-09 recession has been the weakest (by far) of any Canadianrecovery since the Depression. A uniquely weak recovery, not the fact that Canada experienced arecession at all, helps explain the Harper government’s poor economic rating.
