What is the first thing you notice that the year

is inching towards its end? Is it the turning of

the leaves? Perhaps it’s that slight chill in the

morning’s air. Maybe you have noticed it

getting darker in the evenings on the way

home from work? Or is it just that indefinable

but delicious ‘sniff’ of autumn?

Away from nature and into the commercial

world it might be the first Christmas adverts on

television (I saw my first this week) or the

arrival of Christmas themed chocolates in the

supermarkets (three weeks ago) that shock

you into realising that Santa may soon be

thinking about some maintenance to his sleigh.

The signs in nature that the year is pressing on

are consolingly stable. By comparison there

only ever seems one direction of travel from

the world of commerce. Christmas, for shops

and businesses, begins, depressingly, ever

earlier.

The rhythms of nature are, it seems to me, a

reassuringly gentle guide to change. That

reassurance seems partly to lie in the certain

knowledge that they are elements of a grand

cycle, a continuation stretching both

backwards and forwards, further on than we

can imagine. We are part of that. We are

engaged with that cycle and it with us.

There is very little we can do about the

changing year except to embrace it (and

possibly, being British, complain about the

weather it brings). That innocent

dependency in the rhythms of nature is a

reflection on our dependency, too, on God

and all that He has provided, and has in

store, for us. The Christmas adverts and

chocolates may hint at pleasures soon to

come but when they are gone the greatest

gift remains – the gift of being endlessly

loved in one tremendous, everlasting and

ever-renewing cycle of life.

TODAY’S COLLECT

Faithful Lord, whose steadfast love never ceases and whose mercies never come to an end: grant us the grace to trust you and to receive the gifts of your love, new every morning, in Jesus Christ our Lord.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading Isaiah 45.1-7

1Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him – and the gates shall not be closed: 2I will go before you and level the mountains, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, 3I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. 4For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I surname you, though you do not know me. 5I am the LORD, and there is no other; besides me there is no god. I arm you, though you do not know me, 6so that they may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is no one besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. 7I form light and create darkness, I make weal and create woe; I the LORD do all these things.

Second Reading I Thessalonians 1.1-10 1From Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace.

2We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, 3constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labour of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 4For we know, brothers and sisters beloved by God, that he has chosen you, 5because our message of the gospel came to you not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of persons we proved to be among you for your sake. 6And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for in spite of persecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit, 7so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 8For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has become known, so that we have no need to speak about it. 9For the people of those regions report about us what kind of welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God, 10and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead – Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming.

Gospel Reading Matthew 22.15-22

When the chief priests and Pharisees had heard the parables, they realized that Jesus was speaking about them. 15Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said. 16So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, ‘Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in

Thank you The redevelopment of St Mary’s is coming on well but it does make things a little more difficult (and colder!). Thank you to everyone to for being so accommodating these past few weeks. Thank you to everyone who has cleaned and cared for St Mary’s during the building works. Sarah.

Encircled in Care Would you be interested in joining us for Encircled in Care, a three week training resource for pastoral visitors and all who offer care in the church and the community. We are going to be running three sessions intended to help us be even better at what we do and how we care and share experience and wisdom with one another. The dates are 2nd November, 9th November & 23rd November 7.30p.m. - 9.00 p.m. in St. Mary's Hall. For more information email me on [email protected] or put your name down on the sign up sheet at the back of St Mary’s and St Michael’s. Simon

Job Club Help St Mary’s Church Hall Any help that anyone can offer with being part of the welcoming team would be fantastic. If you have just half an hour free on a Tuesday morning to help support this valuable social outreach work I would be delighted to hear from you. Many thanks, Simon

Coffee On A Tuesday St. Michael’s and All Angels Walford - 24th October, 28th November, 23rd January, 27th February. 10.30 until midday All welcome. Please bring friends neighbours and family. Wendy Alston

Shoe Box Appeal 2017 The shoe boxes will be delivered to the warehouse at the beginning of November so could you please let me have filled boxes by Sunday 29 October. There are leaflets by the door in St Mary’s. Tina Raddenbury (01989 218295)

Church Cleaning. As some of the existing team are planning to move away from Ross, we urgently need one or two people to help with vacuuming and dusting St Mary’s. At the moment we are doing the cleaning on Friday afternoon/evenings, after the builders have finished for the week about 4.15 p.m.; it takes 1 - 1 1/2 hours. The new person/people would only be needed for a cleaning session about once every three weeks. Please speak to Janet Cooper if you think you might be able to help.

House Groups in Advent will be following a four week course entitled "Songs of Advent". There will be an opportunity to join groups throughout the Benefice. Please contact Canon Chris on 01989 762368 for more information.

accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. 17Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?’ 18But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, ‘Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? 19Show me the coin used for the tax.’ And they brought him a denarius. 20Then he said to them, ‘Whose head is this, and whose title?’ 21They answered, ‘The emperor’s.’ Then he said to them, ‘Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.’ 22When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.
