President’s Report

Our guest speaker last week was Janette Etherington, Rotarian Coordinator for Interplast.

Janette is PP of the Rotary Club of Nunawading and could address us from Melbourne over Zoom. Zoom is opening

our meetings to more visitors, with AGD Katherine Davies, RC of Holdfast Bay, Tetsuya Yonezawa, RC of Usa Japan

and prospective member Yemi all joining in.

Rotary was a founding partner of Interplast, and Rotarians, Clubs and Districts across Australia and New Zealand still

play a significant role in supporting their work.

I thought I knew a lot about Interplast but was surprised at the scale of its operations.

Until the current travel bans, they were sending out a team every two weeks, covering 17 countries though Asia

Pacific. So far, they have performed 26,500 reconstructive surgeries and enabled 8120 training opportunities for

partner medical personnel since 1983. The teams only go where invited to work with locals so they can participate in

complex procedures and provide the essential follow up care. All the team members are volunteers but there are

significant logistics costs. This is another example where Rotary initiated and funded a partner project which lead to

further Government, Corporate and personal funding.

Currently they are supporting and training local medical teams via internet, until they can resume overseas visits.

We should consider how our club can raise funds to support Interplast in future.

This week it is time to call the member 3rd place below you on the list. Please support this initiative to keep our

friendships strong, while we cannot meet in person.

HI everyone, As I have been the COG editor now for numerous years, I feel that I am

perhaps getting a little stale and SOME NEW BLOOD would be much appreciated.

I am willing to go on doing the COG until someone else is prepared to undertake the job.

Please give it some serious thought and advise Sabrina / David Koetsier of your interest

WEBSITE Our club website has several links on the front page which take you to a variety of Rotary Videos, see example below. www.morialta.org.au. The district 9510 Vimeo has a video about the District Conference to be held in Ballarat next year.

RC Adelaide Guest Speaker Sir Peter Cosgrove. I logged into the address by Sir Peter Cosgrove who spoke as a Zoom speaker at the RC Adelaide meeting on 27 May. The meeting was recorded and the link to the address on You Tube is as follows: ...https://youtu.be/L-a1QXTAwA8 Also at the meeting, that I observed, were Dennis Heanes and Trevor Stirling and possibly other Morialta members and alumni. Sir Peter had as a theme “leadership in troubled times” and was able to relate incidents from his career and also to the current Covis pandemic and the current leadership but also the bushfires earlier this year and as a former governor general issues faced by Sir John Kerr in 1975. An interesting address and the power of Zoom as a medium that has given us the opportunity to be included. It runs for an hour and is worth watching.

Membership Item

First day of winter in Adelaide but hopefully warming up for the last few weeks of our Rotary year. Let’s

hope the next 6 months will be very different as our State starts to open up again.

The Morialta Rotary chat initiative is going so very well with members contacting each other and making

those connections even stronger for our Club. Well done all and please keep it up. Third name under you

on the list this week. Likewise, please have a look at the photo posted by Richard Hurn this week and send

in your entry to be eligible for an amazing prize donated by Richard. Who will he nominate to have the

mystery photo next week?

Fingers crossed we will be able to meet soon and maybe welcome new members and also new friends to

our Club.

Keep well.

Queues continue outside for people hoping for help from the Interplast team.

Example of a tumor that became huge because local help was not available for early intervention. The

Interplast team with local support, were able to remove the tumor and help her regain a normal life.
