Cleves was built in 1875 as the new vicarage for the parish of Kemsing and enjoys an enviable position, nestling on the south face of the North Downs, just above the village and the church itself, and overlooking the lovely Holmesdale Valley. It was named after Ann of Cleves, one of Henry VIII’s wives, whose family were given the parish of Kemsing by the king.Now, Vision Homes have sympathetically converted the building into four, fabulous houses and have built three furthernew homes alongside it.

The grounds, extending to well over an acre, are entered through grand, automatic, wrought iron gates;and are sheltered from the North by vast mature beech trees. To the south, each house opens onto agenerous private patio, paved in natural, Indian stone, planted with herbaceous borders and with mellowbrick walls forming a division between the private and open space. Wicket gates lead to the shared garden;a large area of formal and landscaped lawns which is surrounded by areas of informal garden with roughgrass giving seasonal displays of daffodils, bluebells and primroses. To the east of the grounds a path leads through a narrow woodland shaw and opens onto Kemsing’ssuperb “Common Field,” about 25 acres of mown grass with a well-equipped child’s play area and tennisclub with three courts and a pretty pavilion. To the west, a path leads through a wooded part of the gardento the public footpath which goes up the Downs to The Pilgrims Way, the ancient pathway from Londonto Canterbury which follows along the southern scarp of the Downs for most of the way.

kemsingKemsing lies some four miles north east of Sevenoaks. It is a pretty villageof tile-hung and half-timbered houses with a strong and thrivingcommunity, recently identified as being among the top three villages inKent for ease of commuting and travel. The M25, M26 and A21 junctionsare all within a short drive and fast and frequent train services to London(under 40 minutes) are available from Otford Station (some five minutesdrive by car).

DirectionsThe Cleves is situated in the favoured and pretty, easternend of Kemsing. It is accessed off Church Lane whichruns north off West End, the road that runs through thevillage. On turning into Church Lane, follow the drive upthe hill, past the church and at the top bear left andproceed through the gates to the property
