The period began with the IYC Leukemia Cup on March 24-25. CMCS had four boats

(15%) participating in the twenty-six boat fleet. There were two buoy races on

Saturday and a combined ―reverse start‖ race on Sunday. In the Orange non-spinnaker

fleet, Steve Romaine’s Air Supply was fifth overall. In the Pink True-Cruising Fleet,

David Naumann’s Jolly Mon was second, Diane Fowler’s Windy City was third, and Roger

Horton’s Wicked Wicked Ways was fourth overall.

The San T’weenie distance race was a success considering some of the uncertainties

leading up to it. This was the first of four distance races. The wind forecasts proved to

be misleading (again!) All of the forecasts were for 15+ knots all day. Nobody suggested

that the wind might die in the afternoon (it did!) So this race was typical of most

distances – lots of luck combined with lots of skill out-guessing the wind! Congratulations to all who competed!

Hopefully, everyone had an enjoyable day on the water. There were thirteen starters and twelve finishers. Brock

Johnson’s Vixen was first in the True Cruising Division, followed by Diane Fowler’s Windy City and Bill

Misenheimer’s Barefeet. Roger Horton’s Wicked Wicked Ways was first in the Non-Spinnaker Division, followed

by John Churchill’s Nurdle and Tom Horner’s Bentley. Forrest Banks’ Midnite Rider was first in the Spinnaker

Division, followed by Eric Milbrandt’s Full Tilt. Erik Soronen’s Triumph was first in the Multi-Hull Division.

We’re half way through the 2012 buoy series. After nine races, (two throw-outs), Erik Soronen’s Triumph is in

first place in the Multi-Hull Division. Eric Milbrandt’s Full Tilt is in first place in the Spinnaker Division, followed

by Forrest Banks’ Midnite Rider. Cecil Hazen’s Desperado is in first place in the Non-Spinnaker Division, followed

by Steve Romaine’s Air Supply and Roger Horton’s Wicked Wicked Ways. In the True Cruising Division, David

Naumann’s Jolly Mon is in first place, followed by Brock Johnson’s Vixen and Diane Fowler’s Windy City. The next

buoy regatta will be the Summerset Regatta in October.

Davis Island Yacht Club is sponsoring this year’s Tampa - Ft. Myers Race on May 3-4. Some of our members have

expressed an interest in racing in this event. A NOR and entry form were recently sent to CMCS racers. If you

are interested, contact Steve Roake ([email protected]) or Mike Kayusa ([email protected]). We need

HELP! assisting with the finish for this race. Volunteers are needed to be the finish boat on station at ―SC‖ light

beginning at 7:00 AM on Friday, May 4th. By breaking this up into short assignments, it makes it easier for all.

Please contact Mike or Steve (above) to volunteer. Mike volunteers each year to be the RC for our annual Kayusa

Cup distance event in September – one of CMCS’ long distance series races. Let’s return the favor and help Mike

out with the Tampa-Ft. Myers Race.

The Fort Myers Sailing Club is Sponsoring their annual River District Regatta on Saturday, May 5th. The entire

entry fee (contribution) goes directly to Edison Sailing Center. This regatta is open to everyone. For further

information, visit their website: www.fortmyerssailingclub.org or contact Steve Roake for more information. The next race will be the Estebel Night Race Race on Saturday, May 12. This is the second event in the 2012 Distance

Series. The Estebel Night Race will be the last distance race until the Kayusa Cup in September. The Estebel Night Race is

always a fun event! Sail into the sunset and return by the stars!

Diane Fowler has volunteered to organize a Ladies Race on June 9. This race requires a woman to be at the helm at all times

during the race, including the start. There may also be a ―dress‖ code! It is a ―fun‖ race (aren’t they all?!) with separate

awards for this event only. Contact Diane for more details and to express your interest in participating. All registrations (for

this event only) will be handled by Diane Fowler.

The next month will be busy for our local racers. The NSYC Messmer Cup (April 28-29), The DIYC Tampa-Ft.

Myers Race (May 3-4), The FMSC River District Regatta (May 5), The NSYC Bone Island Regatta to Key West

(May 17-18) and the NYC Key West to Naples Race (May 20-21) should provide plenty of entertainment for our

racers!

Work is under way on the October 5-6, 2012 47th Annual Summerset Regatta. Watch for news on Summerset in

upcoming issues of the Chowder Chatter and on the Summerset website: www.SummersetRegatta.com. Start

getting your crew psyched now!!

Remember that WFPHRF certificates expire on June 30. Renew now while you’re thinking about it! A reminder to

all that WFPHRF has some rules that we may not always be aware of, including some safety requirements and

minimum crew requirements. Perhaps now is a good time to take a minute and re-read those rules! (I did - I’d

forgotten about the minimum crew requirements).

And speaking of rules, one of the benefits of being a U S Sailing member is receiving a new ―Racing Rules of

Sailing‖ rule book. The rules are updated every four years. The next new rules book will become effective on

January 1, 2013. Join now to be on the mailing list for the new rules book. CMCS sponsored a rules seminar last

year which was well-received. Look for an announcement in the fall for a rules seminar that will address any

changes to the Racing Rules.

Well nothing but rave reviews from the Cape Haze Cruise to Palm Island Marina!!! This

was no April Fools’ joke! Many thanks to Gerry & Kathy Wellens on ―Slo Dance‖ who

were great CMCS hosts.

I understand that Palm Island Marina went over and above to make sure their guest

boats (crews) were well taken care of. Unfortunately ―Chase the Clouds‖ didn’t make it

out of the slip that weekend however I understand there were a dozen or so CMCS boats

who did make the cruise.

The Tween Waters cruise was hosted at South Seas Resort by Steve Romaine & Cindy

Carlino on ―Air Supply‖. I understand that Saturday night the only drop of rain in all of

SW Florida was over Air Supply during the cocktail hour. But I’m really certain it didn’t

rain on their party. Don’t know the count at the dock but there were 13 boats on the

race course the following Sunday for a very blustery start. Chase the Clouds was waiting for everyone at the race

end off Ft. Myers Beach Marker 6 and we saw all kinds of wind, and lack off while anchored.

Well the end of April is upon us and no one has volunteered to lead the ―Heading North Cruise‖. The timing of

this Cruise was designed to coincide with the Davis Cup Race Tampa to Fort Myers Beach. Some members have

inquired about this cruise however, no one has stepped up to go to the head of the pack. ―Chase the Clouds‖ will

be leaving her slip Sunday (29th) to head north at a very fast pace to get to Davis Yacht Club by Tues. pm. The

race begins at 1100 hrs Thurs. the 3rd off St. Petersburg in Tampa Bay.

FYI, The Davis Cup Race is an overnight race to the SC marker of Ft. Myers Beach. Race Commodore Steve

Roake is looking for boat(s) to finish this race so don’t be shy about volunteering to be committee boat. Easy,

take the finishing boat name, number and time of finish (GPS time). As of this date I know of several boats from

CMCS participating in the race so wish us all well.

So moving into May, Memorial Weekend ~ Danger Island Cruise, Russell ―The Governor for Life of Danger

Island‖ and Kathleen Vance on ―Shadowfax‖ are overseeing the events beginning Fri., May 25th thru Mon. 28th

(Memorial Day). Reminder ~ Change of location to Pelican Bay behind Cayo Costa. Always a great time!!! With lots

of Boats!!!!

Not too soon for planning for the June Cruises. The ―10,000 Island Cruise‖ is a distance event for over a week

of sailing and island hopping beginning June 1st. The cruise leaders will be Ben and Carolyn Preston.

Fisherman’s Village Cruise begins June 13th thru 17th (Fathers Day). Bob and Bev Duff on ―Chase the Clouds‖

are hosting this event. We have a blanket reservation for slips and all reservations for this cruise must be made

thru the cruise leaders (Fisherman’s Village will not take individual reservations for this event). Please provide

boat name, skipper and fundamental information of the boat. Dockage rate is very competitive and we always have

a great time on this cruise. Tentative cruise intinary will be provided via ―blast‖ by mid May.

Well, I’m exhausted just writing up all these happenings for CMCS. Look for all of you out on the water in the

coming weeks. For now, fair winds, calm seas and just enough breeze to keep the boat moving!

Cape Haze Cruise – April

Cruise Leaders Gerry and Kathy Wellens

This year the Cape Haze cruise was highlighted by four

days of good weather and the greatest group of CMCS

boaters. We did Thursday night at Pelican bay with

cocktails on Slo Dance.

Friday morning we pulled anchor and sailed to Palm

Island Marina. Some went to the anchorage. After lunch

it was pool time. The marina had redone the pool and

hot tub area. (Gorgeous!) 5 o’ clock was (What else?)

cocktails and pot luck/grill at the pool.

Saturday was leisure time at the pool or break out the

dinghy for a nice ride to Don Pedro beach for some fun

and sun. We were joined at the marina by two boats

from The anchorage. We had the launch reserved for a

group Ride to Rum Bay restaurant. Others stayed to

have dinner at Leverock’s restaurant at the marina. By

the time dinner was done we returned to the marina

after sunset.

Sunday we had some short pool time then we sailed back

To Pelican Bay or some went home. Windy City hosted

Cocktails for those in Pelican Bay.

Monday we left the anchorage for home. If this sounds

like fun ( it was) then make plans to attend next year.

The slips have been reserved for 2013 on March 28 through April 1st. Start counting the days.

Boats attending were:

Windy City, Lazy Susan, Shadow Fax, Air Boss, Air Supply, Sea Isle, Second Edition, Intrepid, Trust Me, Slo

Dance, Tanglefoot, Wings, Sunday Silence, and Easter Lee. The Diedrickson’s were aboard Slo Dance.

Monday we left the anchorage for home.

The word has definitely gotten around that CMCS is the Sailing Club to belong

too!!! And many thanks to our members for bragging about our activities. CMCS

members never lack for something to do! If someone criticizes that they can’t

find something to do in our organization, they’re just not participating. Come

to the membership meetings, join us on published cruises and get out on the

race course are regular events challenging members and guests.

This month we welcome another member to the CMCS family of boaters. Ed

and Debra Blum on their boat ―Lucky Duck‖, a Hurricane 21’. They have living

in SW Florida of 10 years and Ed has been crewing with Roger Horton. Ed and

Debra are looking for crewing and social adventures with CMCS.

Speaking of Roger Horton, I have to share ~ Roger is the ―recruiting-est‖

member of CMCS (if there is such a word). He has sponsored more sailors to our group than any

other member. Many thanks Roger for bragging about CMCS and offering the opportunity to so many

people to be a part of our club.

One other thing, trying to get photos of all newer (and more seasoned) members into the Chowder

Chatter. Please remind me to get your photo if I’ve not already done so if you are a newer member.

Also, on the cruises, trying to get photos of members on their boats so be sure to ask if I have the

camera with me each event.

Many boaters ask if CMCS is only a sailing club, my response is, we’re an inclusive organization and

welcome responsible boaters, be them sail or power. SW Florida is such a beautiful , environmentally

sensitive area that those of us who really cherish it for its pristine beaches, waterways of all kinds

welcome like minded boaters to our ranks. We are all advocates for maintaining and contributing to it

continued habitat. So bring it on, sailors of all kinds ~ Aren’t we all ―power boaters‖ at one time or

another. It’s just that some go faster than others.

Looking forward to seeing the CMCS Burgee flying on many new members boats along our waterways.

Be sure to hail them when you seen the burgee waving in the breeze.

West Marine Community Day was a success. Thanks to

all of you who purchased marine products from West

Marine’s McGregor store. The store’s gross for the day

was $20,000! In addition, the Edison Sailing Center’s

car wash and hot dog sale the Saturday before netted

them $200. Look for a presentation of the big $1,000

check from West Marine to the ESC at an upcoming

General Membership meeting. What a great result for a

worthy cause!

For all you sailors who also love to see artwork depicting sailboats, I want you to

know about the Cape Coral Art League’s Summer Regatta art show running in May.

From the entries, the Summerset committee has been invited to select the artwork

to be used on this year’s T-shirt and accompanying promotional materials. At the show reception on Thursday,

May 10th from 5-7:00 PM our selection will be unveiled, as will the judges’ selections for the show. If you can’t

make the wine and cheese reception, the show can be viewed during regular gallery hours, which are Monday –

Thursday from 11 AM to 4 PM for the rest of the month.

Believe it or not, our Summerset committee is up and running. We still need LOTS of help, so please take my

phone calls when I call up begging! Sponsorships are starting to come in, but we need YOU to talk to your

favorite businesses and see if they will support us in exchange for great publicity. The great looking T-shirts we

will be producing can have their names or logos prominently displayed for years to come. Same with the boat

names on the sleeves, so don’t forget. Let me know if you need any help downloading forms.

Thanks in advance, Joan Perkett – Summerset Vice Commodore

JUNE IS THE TIME FOR THE CRUISE TO THE 10,000 ISLANDS.

Always a great cruise to points south. This is a weeks’ cruise (more or less) beginning June 2nd.

Plan on the usual cookout on the beach at Panther, meals at the Rod and Gun Club at Everglades City, dingy trips

to Tiger Key, kayaking around the anchorage areas and campfires on the beaches. Lead by very experienced

cruisers, Ben & Carolyn Preston aboard Kestrel II. As this is extended cruising, participants need to contact the

Cruise Leaders.

The 97th annual Danger Island Festivities are sched-uled for Saturday, May 26th through Monday, May 28th (Memorial Day), with many of our boats arriving on Friday the 25th.

As Governor-for-Life of Danger Island, my re-sponsibility is to notify everyone worldwide of our CMCS Cruise to Danger Island.

Reminder –Danger Island, as shown on all 2011 nautical charts, is located on the entrance spit to Peli-can Bay. The Pelican Bay anchorage is one of the fa-vorites of CMCS as a getaway for rest and relaxation (R & R).

Due to the weather report for that weekend – sunny and warm, temperature high 92, low 73, rain chance 10%, wind SW 6 – 12, current 3 knots and warm sand – we have again scheduled our championship events over a two-day period (Saturday and Sunday).

Danger Island is the number one cruising event of our club each and every year. To properly prepare for the cruise I must have a super-talented team of volunteers (make believe) to assist in the planning and execution of this greatly anticipated event. Many thanks to those 82 volunteer applications I received. Please submit your application and complete the attached medical form again next year. Our new schedule and the introduction of our super-talented team members is as follows:

Friday, May 25th:

Happy hour, sing-along and telling stories about members not attending this weekend.

Beach barbeque and potluck prepared with your propane or charcoal grill, if you have one. Otherwise, begging for heat is permitted.

Saturday, May 26th:

11:00 AM -- The Prestigious Black Tie Croquet Tournament. This event will be hosted by your Governor-for-Life Russell Vance, and First Lady Kathleen.

1:00 PM – The Tie-less Couples Horseshoes Tournament. This event will be hosted by Lt. Governor Steve (―I’m not racing‖) Romaine and Cindy (―You’d better not be‖) Carlino.

6:00 PM – The Grand Chowder Contest. This event will be hosted by Lt. Governors John Reekie, and Susan (honesty) Reekie.

7:30 PM – The Shell of the Conch. This event will be hosted by the Governor. This year we will again feature the ever-popular joke-telling contest, with prizes awarded based on audience acclaim (NOT!).

Sunday, May 27th:

11:30 AM – Bring your lunch to Danger Spit

1:00 PM – The Bald Ball Bocce Tournament. This event will be hosted by Lt. Governors Ray Gherardini and Diane Fowler. Practice at home is recommended before the cruise. As the game of Bocce Ball originated in Italy, Ray will provide a translation of the commentary from Italian to English, while Diane will keep the red wine flowing.

1:00 PM – Simultaneously with the Bocce tournament, we will have the Aerial Corn-Hole Diving and Bom-bardment Contest. This event will be hosted by Lt. Governors Dan Green and Carolyn Wilson. Practice at someone else’s home is recommended.

2:30 PM – Final Awards Ceremony and cleanup.

9

Monday, May 28th:

9:00 AM – Weigh anchor for home or your next port of call.

Our Hostess for the Weekend, will be Lt. Governor Suzanne Aguilera, assisted by our Danger Island Photographer, Lt. Governor Charles Tomlins. Our Chief Engineering Staff consists of Jerry and Kathy Wellens, and Dennis Aguilera. Volunteer assistants are always welcomed by our Engineering Staff.

NOTES:

There will be an awards ceremony after each event. Awards will be presented for first, second and third place.

Name Badges: Our Danger Island Hostess, Suzanne Aguilera, will provide stick-on name badges for all CMCS members and their guests. The badges will help the old time members meet the new members and the new members get to know the names of the old time members. The badges will also help those who cannot remember a person’s name for two minutes.

WHAT TO BRING TO DANGER ISLAND:

Chairs and beach umbrella – this is KEY. There is no shade on Danger Spit.

Charcoal or gas grill and side dish to share for Friday’s pot-luck BBQ

Black Tie or reasonable facsimile (men AND women). You cannot play croquet without one.

Cooler, sunblock, bug repellant, garbage bag, flashlight, and any other survival gear you or your dog may require.

CHOWDER!!! – (Remember, the second ―C‖ in CMCS stands for Chowder!). Prepare your best chowder, set up your ―hut‖, dress up, play music – be creative! There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards for Best Tasting and Best Presentation. As always, ―. . . if you say it’s Chowder, it’s CHOWDER!‖

We expect 29 to 30 boats this year, so start putting air in your dinghy now!. Let’s make this year’s Danger Island Cruise the best one yet! See you there.

The best,

Russell Vance

Really Great Stuff For Sail

Innovative Boating Safety Program Helps Reduce Disruptive Radio Chatter on Channel 16

Southold, NY—August 8, 2011—Sea Tow Services International, Inc. announced it has completed in-

stallation of its revolutionary Automated Radio Check (ARC) boating safety service through its network

of Sea Tow franchises, and will make the free public service available nationwide through additional ma-

rine outlets. Boaters now are able to obtain radio checks through the Sea Tow ARC service in major

coastal boating markets across the U.S., including the East Coast, Gulf of Mexico, and Southern Cali-

fornia, as well as in select inland regions. The first boating safety program of its kind, Sea Tow ARC is

made possible due to Sea Tow’s ongoing relationship with marine communications specialist MariTEL.

Conducting a radio check through the Sea Tow ARC service couldn’t be simpler. All boaters need to do

is tune their VHF radios to Channel 24, 26, 27, or 28, depending on the region, key the mic, and ask for

a radio check. The ARC system responds to each radio check with an automated reply, and also replays

to the boater’s original radio transmission, allowing him or her to assess the strength of the signal and

confirm the VHF radio is in good working order. To find the Sea Tow ARC service channel in a particular

region, all you have to do is visit http://www.seatow.com/boating_safety/ARC.asp. The web page also

links to an instructional video demonstrating how to use the service step by step.
