Rear Commodore of Cruising’s Report

Last month I said that Cruis-ers count in Summerset. Boydo they- we had 29 cruiserssign up. More than DangerIsland! And with good reason- Steve and his crew put onan amazing event. Shrimpconsumption was up; Rumconsumption was up. Now ifonly we could have gottenthe wind up on Sunday.Guess if you can only have 2

out of those 3, I’d pick shrimp and rum. I am acruiser- I know where the start button is for thetrusty Yanmar. Thanks Steve and crew for a greattime!

Upcoming:

Halloween- Oct 31-Nov 1. It was lightly attendedlast year and I got no one to raise their hand thisyear to lead it. Therefore this has been scratched asa formal cruise this year. That is not to say thatnothing is happening. Blessings are talking a partythe 24th (announced via blast and at the OctoberMeeting) and Trust Me!!! will be heading up riverthe 31st to the Franklin Locks- Senior Pass in handto check out the revamped docks. Franklin Locksfolks are looking to go ‘Crick or Creeking’ up HickeyCreek to see if we can find the Pfaff’s new spread.Timing for all this doesn’t really align with ChowderChatter deadlines so we’ll report back next month.

Rum and Reading- November 13-15. York Islandoff St James is the destination for this relaxed week-end cruise. Remember if the wind is ‘wrong’ for an-choring off York Island then it will be ‘right’ for Sani-bel bight. Just look for the sailboats. Trust Me!!!may be running late but we will get there Friday forthe sipping rum contest. I have a bottle of lastyear’s winner and it will take on all contenders. Thisis about quality not quantity. Smoooooth matters. After educating ourselves Friday evening, we willhead in Saturday to Bob Macomber’s book bash atWoody’s up the Monroe Canal. Just follow thestream of dinghies. There is a ‘new’ book this year. Please support literacy.

Thanksgiving – November 25-29. Glen and PaulaVetter are the cruise leaders again this year. Thanks! They are taking charge of the headcountfor Turkey at Cabbage Key. See the form on theWebsite. Talking Turkey 2:00ish. It is better thanMom’s (well at least my mom’s ;-). Info elsewhere. After the stuffing (of the sailors) a relaxing weekendin Pelican Bay.

Vice Commodore—Summerset’s ReportA record number of boats for recentyears, Saturday wind, great parties, fabulous door prizes for all, recogni-tion awards and great participationseem to be the words to describe the2015 50th Summerset Regatta.

Seventy boats entered, and mostraced off Fort Myers Beach in West-erly breezes in Saturday’s OffshoreSailing School Buoy Races. Sun-day’s West Marine Coastal Dis-

tance Race had to be cancelled due to lack of wind. This was the third year we featured a coastal raceon Sunday just for the cruisers. Eighteen CMCScruiser racers entered the competition but the Sun-day’s race was not to be with no wind. Overall par-ticipation in this year’s semi centennial event wasterrific, not only from our club members, but fromboats competing from Fort Myers Sailing Club,Punta Gorda, Naples, Marco Island and one fromPlacida.

Our club’s biggest Regatta saw 165 skippers andcrew members at Friday’s pizza and beer party, sponsored by Little Caesars Pizza and Brock &Barbara Johnson, at Bonita Bills. On Saturday,255 enjoyed the poolside cocktail party at the Pinkshell, featuring music by Eric Stone, and sponsoredby Florida’s Premier Yacht Service. Sunday eve-ning 151 sailors, crew and guests took part in theawards dinner sponsored by Lexus, MorganStanley, and SWFMIA in the beautiful DiamondHead Resort Dining Room. This year over 110CMCS members and guests lent a hand, weresponsors and assisted the 14-member SummersetRegatta Organizing Committee making the GoldenAnniversary a special event.

The support received from local businesses for doorprizes, Gold, Gold+ and Silver sponsors was out-standing – 86 strong! The T-shirt Boat Name SleeveSponsor Program was equally supportive. Our goalwas 60 boats. We had 68 boat name sleeve spon-sors – WOW! This record level of support will en-able us to make a sizeable contribution to youthsailing programs. In total, 230 companies, sailorsand generous donors make this possible. Corpora-tions supporting Summerset and youth sailing asGold Sponsors can be found anytime on our web-sites, cmcs-sail.org and SummersetRegatta.com.They have supported us, we need to support them,so please patronize them and don’t forget to tellthem you are from CMCS or participated in theSummerset Regatta. Gold+ sponsors’ businesscards are printed each month in our newsletter.Listed at the end of this article are the wonderfulfolks who are Gold Sponsors, and we thank you andhonor your support.

VC-Summerset Report ContinuedCMCS wishes to thank the area media for coveringthis year’s Regatta. Six articles and numerous pho-tographs have been published covering our event.Photographers covered Summerset with hundredsof photos on Shutterfly and on our website. Thiswas a record number of photos. Thank you to allthe photographers. Sunday evening’s portrait crewshots were terrific! Bill Gladstone, North U’s Execu-tive Director, came all the way from Connecticut tovideo Saturday’s action atop my mast. This videocan be seen on our website and was shown at Sun-day’s awards dinner.

Sunday banquet was special this year as seventeen“ancient mariners” were present to receive awardshonoring them for participation in the early Summer-set Regattas. Also an historical booklet was givenout with photos, news articles, t-shirt and posterdesigns and remembrances over the years of the 50Summersets.

The Fort Gorda Cup was awarded Sunday eveningto the Northern Team. The Fort Gorda Cup is acompetition between boats homeported in CharlotteHarbor and north, and boats homeported south ofCharlotte Harbor. A low-point scoring system isused and only two events are scored: PGSC’s Con-quistador Cup in March and the Summerset Re-gatta in October. The FGC was established to in-crease participation in both of these major regattas. This is only the fourth year of the competition, whichwas won the first year by the South. Come onSouth Team, let’s go to Charlotte Harbor in Marchand try and win the cup back!

I am very appreciative to all those whose effortsover my eight years as your Summerset Chairmanwere productive ones. We have watched Summer-set grow while supporting youth sailing. I am grate-ful to the Edison Sailing Center for presenting mewith a beautiful Waterford Vase engraved Capt.Summerset ESC Youth Sailors and a note “on be-half of all youth sailors who have benefited from thegenerosity of your energy and passion!” Thank yousailors.

We are grateful to all those who participated in theyear’s 50th Summerset Regatta. It was a specialone, with beautiful weather and great sailing. Let’skeep the growth rate up as we have done for thelast six years. Remember, only 345 days to the nextSummerset Regatta! It will be special – “SAIL THETRADITION”.

SUMMERSET Saturday Cocktail PartyShrimp Police

There were lots of people who made all of theSummerset social events run well. Everyone whoattended the Saturday Cocktail Party at the PinkShell probably encountered our very own shrimpNazis! Debbie Merriman, Theresa Roake, ShirleyMaddix, Debra George, Chris Shields, and MaryYankaskas.

There were plenty of others who have been men-tioned elsewhere but these people spent their eve-ning making sure that everyone got enough (but nottoo much!) shrimp to eat.

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

The adage, “Don’t fix it unless it’s broke”, is a famil-iar phrase. – one we ascribe to most of the time. But when changes occur within an organization, itbecomes the responsibility of the Officers & Direc-tors to run the “sniff test”, making sure that how theorganization conducts business is what is writteninto its operations manual, otherwise known as ourBy-Laws. The last time CMCS’s By-Laws wereamended was during Joan Perkett’s term as Com-modore. The basic structure of the document hasnot required significant change since then. Corpo-rate governance suggests that By-Laws be re-viewed every five- seven years ( or sooner if opera-tions or structure has changed in such a way thatthe structure is out of synch with the By-Laws).

When leadership determined that there needed tobe, in place, an ongoing system to identify, cultivate, promote, and nominate leaders for the future, achange within the By-Laws was needed to matchthe process to the organizing principles. What usedto be an annual Nominations and Elections processevolved into an ongoing cadre of members andleaders known as the CDC, or Club DevelopmentCommittee. CMCS is blessed to attract and retainthe membership that the organization has enjoyedfor 50+ years. To insure that continuity of leader-ship, the CDC was birthed, and is now led by ViceCommodore, Don Lawson.

Once the Article on Election of Officers requiredsome edits and updating, the Ad Hoc Committeebegan looking at the document holistically and sawminor verbiage that needed aligning, e.g. in someArticles CMCS is referred to as “The Society”, andin others it is referred to as “the Club”. Some Arti-cles contained duplicate language.

The Flag Officers & Directors have reviewed thesuggested edits & revisions and believe they areready to be brought to the General Membership forfinal input and eventual adoption. The draft of theedits is available on the CMCS website in the Mem-bers Only section. If you would like to have a hardcopy of the document, one can be provided for you.

Follow this link to the By-Laws on the CMCS web-site:http://www.cmcs-sail.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/2015-10-22-CMCS-Bylaws.pdf

CMCS Rum and Reading Cruisea/k/a Macomber Cruise

November 13-15, 2015

This is CMCS’s most educational cruise! And it is so simple that there are nopre-requisites. It begins on Friday. Trust Me!!! will anchor at York Island for theevening. As always, if the wind is wrong for York Island it will be right for Sani-bel Bight. Communal Cocktails will in fact occur at 5 PM on Friday night. Judyintends to sweet talk the largest boat in the anchorage to host. If that fails wewill see how many folks we can squeeze on Trust Me!!!. (30 something is thecurrent record). There are no class size limits in this CMCS school. BYOB anda tidbit to pass. There will be an educational seminar on the intricacies of sip-ping Rum. Learn by doing. Trust Me!!! will supply the first couple of choices butfeel free to contribute if you have a special favorite. ‘Old Nassau’ remains onthe banned list; Xaniche– last years winner will be present. The request to use16 oz glasses has been tabled.

Saturday morning we'll weigh anchor if we ended up at Sanibel Bight and headto York Island to anchor (a proper display of flags and colors is encouraged). The expeditionary force from the fleet will dinghy up the Monroe Canal toWoody's Waterside Pub (a very dog and sailor friendly establishment) for theBob Macomber Annual Book Celebration. http://www.robertmacomber.com/Scuttlebutt.html The ’class’ starts at noon though it runs well into the evening. If you aren’t in the first wave of dinghies to head in don’t worry. Folks unable tojoin the naval assault are encouraged to join the land forces that will arrive bycar and bike. The usual drill is there is a hog roast, beer, and a band or two.And we act very literary Bob wanders about being very authorly and hawks asmany books, hats, and t-shirts as he can. There is a new book this year. Atthis point that Wake dude must be as old as Bob. After you are booked out, head back to your boat to recover.

Nothing formal is planned for Saturday night or Sunday so head home early orhang around and hit the Waterfront for lunch and make it a complete tour of St.James city. Trust Me!!! will monitor 16/72 and my cell is 822-6934

CMCS Thanksgiving Cruise - 2015November 25 thru 29, or whenever you can make it.

Cruise leaders: Glen & Paula Vetter aboard Freestyle

Once again we plan to head North to the Cayo Costa State Park area, where mostof us anchor in Pelican Bay and enjoy the Park. This cruise has evolved into avery flexible weekend that can accommodate everyone’s schedule. There’s

plenty to do at Pelican Bay with exploring in your dinghy, access to Cayo Costa’sbeach, and of course, our tradition of happy hours on a boat, beach, and/or mana-

tee hole.

Thanksgiving dinner is done either by preparing the BIG meal yourself on yourboat (not our idea of fun), or by joining us, at Cabbage Key for their traditional

turkey dinner.

Arrangements have been made for a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursdayfor 2:00 PM at Cabbage Key. Please, do not call Cabbage Key to make or changedinner reservations with the CMCS group. Make these reservation through ourcruise leaders – Glen & Paula Vetter. ONLY our Cruise Leaders will be modify-

ing the CMCS dinner reservation at Cabbage Key. We’ve tried to make it easy foryou to make your reservation by using the handy RSVP form on the CMCS web-site. http://www.cmcs-sail.org/event/thanksgiving-cruise-2/. Simply type your

information in the boxes, and then click on “Submit RSVP”.

Our cruise is unstructured. Most people work their way up to Pelican Bay on the 26th. Arrive when youcan. The cruise is a destination cruise, so only New Year’s Eve counts for the cruising award.

Pelican is a good anchorage and most boats can tuck in if there is a norther…or go around to School-house Bay (aka Hurricane Hole). Cayo Costa State Park is a great place to meander around. Pleaseremember that there is a $2/day per person shore fee payable at the honor box or you can pay at theoffice if you don’t have change.

As is our recent custom, we are spending New Year’s Eve at Fisherman’s Village. We have free use ofthe boaters’ lounge from 4-12 or later. Bring snacks for snack hour and a dish to share for pot luck.Your hosts (Dan and I ) will provide some form of meat….spiral ham comes to mind and food setups(plates, forks…well, you know what that all is). Snack hour generally runs into potluck and it’s hard totell what phase we are in. We start snacking at 5. Serious food is after that. I don’t mention drinking be-cause that really doesn’t have a time frame.

All are welcome and it is an easy drive up there. No charge for the land cruisers except the requiredfood items!

The marina will also have a band, snack type food, and beer/wine. All are welcome to enjoy the music.Food and beverage- extra charge! (very reasonable).

All slips are currently reserved and the Marina is sold out. If you are one of the 13 boats who made res-ervations for a slip, you are fine. In past years we have had a waiting list and all got in. No guaranteesabout this year, but it is certainly worthwhile getting on the waiting list. You can also anchor out if youlike and use the dinghy dock.

Nothing has changed at the marina. The building is as you remember it! Many of us go up on the 30thand stay 2 nights.

There is a new reservation policy. A credit card is required and there is a 72 hour prior to reservationcancellation policy. If you cancel within that 72 hours, you will be charged 1 night dockage. If you wishto get on the waiting list it is imperative that you speak ONLY to Randy Chevalier. If you speak with any-one else (name withheld-Jim) don’t count on having a reservation. 941 575 3000

If you have any questions other than reservations, feel free to call or email me.

Election Procedures forCMCS Officers and Directors

According to our CMCS Bylaws the way we electofficers and directors provides more opportunitiesfor the membership to become involved with thegovernance of their organization.

Under the current bylaws, the 1st Vice Commodorehas the responsibility to submit this article in Augustfor the September Chowder Chatter each year ex-plaining how the process works.

There are two ways a candidate can be nominatedfor a Flag Officer or Director position. The first wayis that the Club Development Committee can nomi-nate them and the second way is that any memberin good standing can nominate them.

Historically, the Nominating Committee operated ona 3 month basis. On November 12th 2013 the Boardexpanded this Committee to a 12 month Club De-velopment Committee “CDC”.

The Club Development Committee “CDC” con-sists in part of a past commodore, two current direc-tors and two members from the general member-ship. If you are interested in serving on the CDC,contact the 1st Vice-Commodore. The Commodorewill also solicit interest from the floor at the generalmembership meetings for members interested inserving on the Club Development Committee“CDC”.

At the September and October General meeting(s)of CMCS, the Commodore will review the process ofselecting the Officers and Directors for the comingyear. The Commodore will also encourage that writ-ten nominations for Flag Officers and Director posi-tions be submitted to the CDC no later than Novem-ber 1.

The Nomination form is available on the CMCS Website, and published in the September and OctoberChowder Chatter.

You can nominate yourself, in fact you will noticethat you have to sign the form and another memberin good standing has to sign the form. We do notwant someone nominated who does not want toserve.

The Club Development Committee meets through-out the year to prepare a Nomination slate of Offi-cers and Directors, and will report that slate as arecommendation of the CDC at the NovemberBoard Meeting. No action may be taken by theBoard other than to accept or reject the recommen-dation of the CDC before the December GeneralMeeting of the Society.

In the event that the CDC Club Development Com-mittee does not select a nominated candidate pro-vided from the general membership for its’ own slateof Officers and Directors, that nominated candidateshall still be included and placed on the ballot. Inother words, all properly nominated candidates willappear on the ballot.

All nominations shall then be submitted by Novem-ber to be published before the December Meeting ofthe Society.

Another element to our voting process is the Cre-dentials Committee that will actually run the elec-tion. Two members selected from the general mem-bership, not any Flag Officer or Director, will consti-tute this committee. The Commodore will requestvolunteers at the November membership meeting.Requests for absentee ballots would be made to theCredentials Committee. The Fleet Purser and FleetYeoman will act as staff to the Credentials Commit-tee.

Voting is by membership, not by member. In mostcases that means that each family has one vote. Weanticipate that you will pick up your ballot with yourname tag at the December meeting of the society. There will be provision for write in nominations. Ifyou request an Absentee Ballot and then decide toattend the December meeting of the society, you willnot get a second ballot.

This process and procedure is a work in progressand may need some modifications. Our goal is tohelp you get more involved in the workings of yourclub.
