Hi Branch members, On behalf of everyone I would like to thank John for his work as Coordinator in the past year and wish you a speedy recovery to full fitness. Unfortunately I was not able to attend the Kaituna Ridges Rally again this year but I have read and listen to the reports with interest. To Murray and your team you have done the Branch proud. Well done. For 2016 the TT2000 and the Kaituna Ridges Rally dates will not clash. This will be good for many Ulyssians. Colin Simpson ran a Saturday ride in March. This was well supported and has filled a gap for some members. This will be a regular day on our rides calendar. Good on ya Colin. The inter Branch ride was a success with all four top off the south Branches getting together for lunch at Berlins. Have you been on the Branch website lately? It’s progressing all the time. Well done Bob. Have you been on the Club website lately www.ulysses.org.nz The website is always changing with more member discounts and new gear and is about to have an upgrade. See you at the Branch AGM (it’s a good place to have your input into our Branch). I am about to attend the Club AGM and Coordinators meeting. For details of previous meeting’s minutes you can access these through the Club website. I am happy to share your thoughts with Natcom. Drop me a line or give me a call. Havelock – Friday to Sunday 20-22 February 2015. Having purchased our first caravan just before Xmas and returning from our first away trip of 2 ½ weeks last Sunday, Dale & I were keen to get away in it again so it was a pretty simple decision to opt to take it out to Havelock for the Rally, especially when we remembered we camped in a tent at last year’s rally and the heavens opened up on the Saturday night which led to a not so comfortable night, a very wet pack up and almost a mutiny by “She Indoors”. I had promised Murray I would get out there early Friday afternoon to help set up, however being new to caravanning, we (I really mean “I”) duck shovelled around all morning sorting out what to take & even did a trip to Waikawa to purchase a fairly compact Bar- B- Que which had caught my eye at Burnsco. The end result was we didn’t arrive until after 3pm so I was about as useless as tits on a bull as far as helping set things up was concerned. Another time consuming factor was to decide whether or not I take the motor bike in which case it would be up to the better half to tow the caravan to & from the Rally. A quick check that the caravan insurance was up to date settled the issue however it would be an understatement to say I was not a tad nervous. I have to eat humble pie and admit she did it with the greatest of aplomb. Upon arrival Murray & Lindsay directed us to an area where we could park the caravan and set ourselves up. Murray reminded us that Happy Hour was not far away so we had better sharpen up our act & get sorted sooner rather than later. Dale insisted that we would pitch the awning & she took great delight in reminding me that on our first trip away we pitched it twice and that I was far better at it the second time so this time it should be a breeze. When I asked how she came to that conclusion she informed me that the first time I used the word F—K about a dozen times whereas it was only mentioned once the second time! Begrudgingly I have to admit that she was right once again, this time it went up with no tantrums. Having settled in it was a case of joining everyone for Happy Hour under the shade of a couple of Willow trees beside the river. The next couple of hours of socialising were most relaxing, a great way to get into rally mode and to meet new people. It was then time to think about tea, you had the choice of cooking it at your camp site or using the Bar-B-Que and kitchen facilities at the Woolshed. I was rather keen to

use the new Bar-B-Que so I set it up on a table just outside the awning and while waiting for Dale to prepare the food, I browsed through the instructions which were a tad difficult to follow, and I quote:- “Onoe the connections are made, do this simple leaktest. Tum the gas on at the cylinder, but bo not tum the appliance on. If there is a leak, bubbles will appear. Never use a naked flame to test leaks.” The end result was to forget the Pidgin English instructions & just light it up which I duly did once the food appeared. For a minute or so things went along smoothly so I ducked inside to grab a beer as one does when one cooks on a Bar-B – Que only to hear a scream from Dale that we have a fire! Shit I was out of the caravan in a flash to find flames around the hose connection at the Bar-B-Que itself which had not been done up tight enough. I quickly “tumed” the gas off which did the trick & extinguished the flames however not before doing some damage to the gas hose. On closer inspection apart from a couple of dark scorch marks on the hose it was still intact and in one piece. Unfortunately this little hiccup did not go unnoticed, initially by all in sundry around me who expressed concern at our predicament, but once things were back in control I got the distinct impression those who knew me were rather smug that for once I had cocked up & they had every intention of letting me squirm a bit. Having got over all the excitement I shifted the table & Bar-B-Que further away from the awning & relit it. All was well so we went ahead & started cooking. While all this was going on Evan Teale & his son arrived and started pitching a small tent beside us. I took pity on them and invited them to share our meal for which they were most grateful. After tea it was off to the Woolshed

for more socialising and dancing to music supplied by our resident DJ, Kelvin Watson, before calling it a day. Saturday dawned a little overcast accompanied by some rather loud noises not too far away from us. At first it sounded a bit like someone winding up a TV satellite dish but as it changed both pitch & tone it became increasingly difficult to identify. At one stage I thought it sounded as if someone was having a bad dose of

KAITUNA back to Basics Rally

emitting wind from the anus (commonly referred to as a good old fashioned FARTING session) but then I remembered the Port-a-Loo was a reasonable distance away and no one would be capable of conjuring up such an audible resonance given both the distance and the fact that anyone ensconced in the Loo is surrounded by fairly dense plastic. Obviously other people had become aware of this unusual dawn chorus and it wasn’t long before its source was revealed. It seems Blackie has a CD of every conceivable fart possible accompanied by the appropriate degree of groaning required to match the Richter scale reading of the said fart and took great delight in turning it on as loud as possible each time some poor unfortunate soul took up residence in the Port-a-Loo. Needless to say no one dared use that particular loo after that.

Saturday morning was a please yourself affair with no set activities. Some opted to walk up the surrounding hills, some went up to Havelock or elsewhere and others opted to stay around camp and either chill out or catch up with mates from other areas. Around 2pm it was time to hold the Motorcycle Gymkhana. Kelvin approached me to enter since I had come by bike. Until that point in time I had not given entering a thought, especially after last year’s fiasco when Louise Pearce & I entered this event using mountain bikes rather than motorbikes and to my disgust was made to look like a real Charlie by Louise who outclassed me in just about every event. If I was as bad as that on a dammed pushbike, what the hell was in store for me on a motorcycle? It was therefore with considerable reluctance that I finally agreed to enter. To make matters worse Grumpy had to undertake some repairs to Bob Tanner’s Harley that morning which resulted in some wag fashioning up a wooden cross with the words “RIP Harley Davidson” inscribed on it. Ray Beard subsequently repositioned the cross next to my bike as a joke which I thought was quite funny until I had committed myself to entering at which point I started to wonder if it was in fact a bad omen. And so with great apprehension I lined up at the start swearing that I would do everything possible to stay upright even if it meant coming dead last. I also felt rather self- conscious when I looked at all the other entrants, I was the only wuss wearing a helmet, but as Blackie had said to me as I was about to head off to the start, you only have one head and it’s not worth the risk of getting it knocked about. To cut a long story short all the events were fun, I achieved my goal of staying upright and even managed to successfully negotiate some of the events

in their entirety. Following the Gymkhana, another “Happy Hour” helped while away the time before we all headed up to the Woolshed for a demonstration of Huntaway and Heading sheep dogs at work and the impact of technology in the Woolshed Covered Yards in the form of electronic scales and drafting gates. It was then time to head back to camp to

spruce up for the evening’s activities. The evening kicked off with a formal two course meal of roast mutton, spuds & an assortment of salads followed by a rhubarb pudding, all laid on by our hosts, Paul & Muff Newton. The meal was superb, the setting rustic and the company at our end of the table oozing charm and sophistication. Pity about the rest of mob in the room! Our branch welfare officer Chris Donaldson and his wife Sue had been co-opted to help Paul & Muff, initially to serve the meal and later as kitchen hands to collect and wash dirty dishes. At the conclusion of the meal Murray said a few words of welcome to everyone especially those who had travelled considerable distances to attend and thanked Paul & Muff for once again hosting our Rally and providing such a wonderful meal. He then called on Mike Dew our National President to say a few words. Mike reiterated Murray’s comments and congratulated the branch on such a successful rally despite the low attendance of its own members and strongly urged the Branch to continue holding an annual rally as he felt such events were the mainstay of the Ulysses movement. It was then time for Murray and Kelvin to hand out some prizes. The moment Murray opened his mouth I got this sinking feeling as he was staring straight at me. And sure as God made little apples he launched straight into a rather

exaggerated version of my Bar-B-Que fiasco, finishing with a strong

rd Me, but I’m dammed if I know how the Judges came to

that conclusion. There were five draws in the raffle with four of the five draws going to well-deserved winners however the third draw was a bit dodgy as the organizer (Kelvin) claimed that prize. Paul on guitar & vocals, Muff on vocals & Chris Donaldson on violin kicked off the music for the night with some well-known sing-a-long songs. Following Muff’s departure from the stage Carol Smith from Canterbury took her place and gave an extremely talented solo performance which was

very easy to listen to and appreciated by all present. The arrival of Kelvin in his best DJ outfit signalled the start of Party Time and those with stamina and the ability to gyrate a tad proceeded to dance the night away. Woke up Sunday morning to an overcast & misty day. Once again we were

subjected to a replay of that musical masterpiece entitled the Fart Overture whilst we went about our early morning ablutions. Once breakfast was over it was time to start packing up and depart for home to bring the curtain down on another great Rally. Some final comments: The Rally attracted 49 entrants representing four different areas: Marlborough 32 Canterbury 12 Nelson 4 Westport 1 There were also some day trippers who turned up on Saturday for a few hours. Well done to Murray Brooks, Jeff Champion & Lindsay Learmonth for organising another great event and to Kelvin Watson for convening the successful Gymkhana and providing the evening entertainment. Likewise our thanks to Megan Trilford & Lou Jowers for assisting the organisers as and when required. And finally a big thank- you to Paul & Muff Newton for hosting our Rally at their property. 26th

February 2015 – lunch at Kohatu.

10am start today so I had to make a real effort to extract myself from the sheets early enough to make the start on time. Needless to say I only just made it. A good crowd had gathered for today’s ride including Tony Williams, Lou Jowers, Allan Graham, Lindsay Learmonth, Terry Maloney, Danny McGowan, Evan Teale, Chris Donaldson, Ray Beard, Peter Bugler, Peter Unger, Karl Marshall, Graham Check, Grant Johnston, and Murray Brooks. Upon leaving Brayshaw Park I couldn’t help noticing as we cruised through Fairhall the cloud build up over the hills and wondered if that was an ominous sign. The ride up the valley to about the Wash Bridge was pretty good however as we started climbing the air chilled somewhat and pretty soon a few spots of precipitation appeared on my visor. By the time we got to the Top House Road turnoff the drizzle had really set in. The turnoff was our designated catch up stop and everybody was fairy busy donning wet weather gear for the next leg of the trip through to Kohatu. The drizzle eased the lower we descended to a point where it was fairly non-existent by the time we got to our lunch destination. We were met at Kohatu by a welcoming party from Nelson in the form of Trevor Stanton and Paul Trewavas, which was great. Rod Curtis also made the ride out from Nelson but I got the distinct impression he was not part of the welcoming party because as soon as he spotted me, he wanted to know what the hell I was doing there and gave a perfect imitation of having had his day totally spoilt. I haven’t the faintest idea why he reacted like that. I have only ever said nice things about Rod as far as I can remember. The fact that I suffer from severe memory loss on occasions is irrelevant and shouldn’t colour his opinion of me. So come on Rod, how about a kiss and a cuddle next time we meet!!!! Fortunately Murray had pre-warned the Kohatu Pub staff of our visit so they were ready for our invasion. Not only

did they have to cope with our lot but also with numerous tourists and they did it with the greatest of aplomb. The menu catered for all tastes, the quality of the food superb and their efficiency tremendous. The young waitress was very easy on the eye and gave as good as she got on the banter stakes. It would be totally remiss of me not to mention Grant’s choice of food today. True to his GP’s instructions he persevered with his standard bowl of soup, however he did go slightly astray in that today’s soup was somewhat more full bodied than previous

bowls of soup he had consumed. For those readers with an interest in culinary matters the contents of Grant’s soup were eggs, bacon chop, hash browns, mushrooms, toast and tomatoes. Obviously the kitchen whizz couldn’t cope with trying to puree that lot so the soup, to quote Grant’s own words, “was a tad lumpy.” It must of tasted ok as there wasn’t a hell of a lot of a mess left on his plate by the time he had finished slurping his way through that lot. As we were finishing our meals, Murray decided he wanted a couple of pictures of our group but as he was rather hemmed in he asked Rod to take them for him. Now Murray that was a real dumb idea. For starters Rod has a hearing problem and he couldn’t hear the click of the camera when he pressed the appropriate button so he kept asking all in sundry if he had actually taken a photo. Furthermore I don’t think modern technology is Rod’s thing judging by some of his comments such as which side should he aim at the photo subject & which hole should he look through? The final straw was how he held the camera in his hand. Every time he took aim the little pinkie of his hand holding the camera sort of semi cocked and pointed straight at the subject matter rather the actually helping to hold the camera. After a very pleasant and leisurely lunch it was time to think about heading for home and the choice of route to take. I opted to head back via Nelson with a stop at Rai Valley for an ice cream. It was a good long ride today,

great scenery, great company and about three seasons thrown into one. Bob #8033

5th March 2015 – Flaxbourne Café, Ward. Too bloody hot to lie in this morning so got up early & scored some brownie points by bringing She Indoors a cup of tea in bed. Needless to say the brownie points were well & truly negated within ½ an hour but it was good while it lasted. The trick now was to front up at Brayshaw Park early for a change. I managed to get there around 10 to 11 so that was a new experience for me & was rather chuffed with myself. Assembled for today’s ride were Murray Brooks, Lou Jowers, Stuart Paul, Karl Marshall, Tom Brown, Lindsay Learmonth, Peter Unger, Jeff Eales, Gordon Berry, Evan & Margaret Teale, Tony Williams, prospective new member Dereck Stripling who hails from the UK, Danny McGowan, Brian & Louise Pearce, Ray Beard, Terry Maloney and yours truly. Jeff Champion joined us at the Café. Having informed us of today’s destination, Murray then reminded us not to ride too close to the bike in front of you and then sent off three or four bikes early all of which were under 200 cc. I offered to ride tail end Charlie today. Our catch up stop was opposite Montana at Riverlands. As the multitude took off I noticed Brian & Louise deep in discussion over Brian’s 3 Wheeler so I dismounted to see what the issue was. It couldn’t have been too serious as they both took off before I could talk to them. As I turned back to my bike another rider pulled into the layby. Thinking he was a late comer I wandered over to see who it was only to be greeted by a tourist with a very heavy load on the back. It seems he had stopped because the pack he had strapped onto the top of his other saddle bags had worked loose. Once I ascertained he was ok and didn’t need help I left him to it and took off to catch up with our mob. I caught up with them at the new Dashwood overpass, which is now operational but subject to a 30km per hour speed restriction. Most of it is sealed however there were a

couple of places where we rode over rough metal. Once finished it will certainly ease the flow of traffic over what was previously a bottle neck. Rather than head straight to Ward we turned off onto the Ward Beach Road past London Hill and over the dry concrete ford before re-joining the main road directly opposite our destination. I caught up with Brian & Louise to see what the issue was at Montana only to be informed that when Brian turned on the key, a warning light came on. Brian was adamant it couldn’t be an oil issue as he had checked the oil two days ago. Louise asked Brian if the light went out during the trip out but apparently it did not and remained activated for the whole trip. Based on the assumption it had got to Ward in one piece Brian was more than convinced it would also see him home at which point he could do a more serious analysis of what might be amiss. Having been pre-warned of our visit and numbers the Café’s staff was ready & waiting and it wasn’t long before the first orders started to arrive at the tables. Ray Beard took newcomer Dereck Stripling under his wing but I’m not sure that was a good idea, especially when I asked Ray what he had ordered for lunch. Before Ray could engage his brain properly he blurted out he had ordered “Nut Clusters”. I couldn’t believe my luck, especially when I saw the look on Dereck’s face after hearing Ray’s response – talk about a stunned mullet; he didn’t know whether to laugh, cry or simply pretend he didn’t hear correctly. After giving Ray’s response serious consideration I couldn’t understand why he wanted to take on board an additional “Cluster of Nuts”. One can only assume his original cluster has suffered some sort of malady or are passed there used by date and need replenishing. Don‘t be surprised if you see Ray swinging from a tree on Saturday at Shelleys. It was great to see Margaret out on her bike today. It’s a pity that there is always someone in the group who put people like Margaret off however. Today was no exception; the Wally of the Day award goes to Gordon Berry. No sooner had I said it was great to see her when Gordon threw in his tuppence worth by saying that he fully agreed with me especially as he had followed Margaret all the way out to Ward and he had kept a very close eye on her rear end bearing for the entire trip!! After lunch Murray decided it was time to take the obligatory group photo but had an issue with how he was going to capture such a large group in one photo. His answer was to get us all to get up close & personal below the balcony while he took the photo from the elevated position of the balcony. Unfortunately he needed to gain further height to capture us all and it was at that point in time that Murray lived up to the Ulysses’ motto of disgracefulness by displaying the worst table manners I have ever seen. Murray proceeded to climb up onto one of the balcony tables upon which we had just finished eating from and from which future customers were going to eat upon following our departure. I don’t know, if my kids had done that they would have got a swift kick up the backside. Needless to say as the photo was being taken there were several suggestions for Murray to either take one or two steps backwards or forwards while he was snapping away in the vain hope he

he might just step off the table unexpectedly. What he lacked in table manners was more than compensated however by nous as he managed to avoid succumbing to our suggestions very nimbly.

With the formalities over it was time to hit the road either for home of further afield. I opted to continue south for a while & got as far as Clarence before turning for home. Pity it got quite windy on the way back to partially spoil what was otherwise a perfect ride on a perfect day with great company (that is of course assuming one ignores the presence of Ray, Gordon & Murray!)

12th March 2015 – Foresters Café – Rai Valley.

Arrived at Brayshaw Park to be greeted by Graham Check, Terry Maloney, Lou Jowers, Karl Marshall, Tony Williams, Jeff Eales, Grant Johnston, Ray Beard, Gordon Berry, Brian & Louise Pearce, Anne Rockhouse, Derek Stripling, Danny McGowan, Margaret & Evan Teale, Stuart Paul and Lindsay Learmonth. All up 19 of us for today’s ride – quite a good muster. In the absence of Murray the role of leader fell upon the tall shoulders of Lindsay today. Kevin Bright had brought Nicky down to Brayshaw Park to see us off. As she is currently confined to a wheelchair following her mishap with a sheep recently, she had to remain inside their tin top but everybody had a chance to say G’day to her. Lindsay gave us a brief pep talk about today’s ride and destination and then it was time to hit the road. Louise sort of stood beside her bike looking rather nonplussed for a moment, something was not right but she was not quite sure what. Fortunately Kevin B came to her rescue when he wandered over from his vehicle to hand Louise her riding jacket. Louise don’t fret over this little indiscretion, it’s just a case of having a senior moment, something several of our group experience judging by what I have seen over the last couple of years or so. You can now consider yourself a member of that exclusive club; hopefully I will not suffer the indignity of having to join your ranks for a few years. The ride out was pretty good, not too much traffic and we got along at a reasonable clip. There were quite a few cars at the Café so parking at first was a bit of an issue but we soon sorted that out. By the time our lot got inside the place was fairly full which would bring a smile to the Café owners. There was a bit of a wait for our orders to be processed but that was understandable and no one was complaining. Sorry that’s not quite right, our resident Doctor did a bit of a bellyache over the menu – it was bereft of an “all day breakfast of soup” so he had to settle for something a little more healthy and smaller in quantity than he is used to! At least he admitted his meal was very tasty and enjoyable. Louise obviously wanted to make amends for her earlier indiscretion and decided that she needed a fairly large dose of sugar to counteract the possibility of another senior moment. She achieved this by ordering an extremely large portion of lemon and passion fruit Cheesecake to follow her main course. Grant, you had better watch out, looks like you have some competition on the eating stakes! During lunch Ray produced a pictorial book of motor bikes under 200cc loaded to the gunnels with everything you could imagine. I’m not sure which Asian country was featured but it was amazing just what they could load on such small bikes. In some cases the rider was only just visible. How the hell they stay upright as well as negotiate dense city traffic is a mystery and one I certainly have no wish to experience. Grant joined our table after lunch and somehow the conversation got onto professions and the trials and tribulations that go with those professions. Not to be outdone I waded in boots and all and related a story about my dealings with Inland Revenue over a Client’s cock up when

preparing his GST Return. When I had finished Grant congratulated me on my rather long drawn out dissertation of the pros & cons of GST which he said tongue in cheek he found rather riveting and will ponder over it for days to come. Yeah right Grant. At least it was right up there compared to the pros & cons of an ingrown toenail or suffering from constipation, etc!

No one seemed in a hurry to depart so after lunch quite a few sat around outside enjoying the cooling breeze and each other’s company. Around two o’clock the exodus commenced as people slowly left for home but not before we all admired Graham Check’s latest acquisition. It was a very new Maxsym 400i Scooter, apparently manufactured in Taiwan. We all couldn’t help noticing the advertising on the number plate holder which indicated Graham had purchased it through Rolling Thunder in Christchurch so we wondered if Harley Davidson had some input into the mechanics of the Scooter. Someone made the comment that on the way out they had followed Graham and he certainly got along at a fair rate of knots so obviously it has some grunt. It looked pretty cool as well, so well done Graham, we hope you really enjoy it.

The trip home was reasonably uneventful. I followed Louise & Brian as far as Havelock until I turned off to go through Queen Charlotte Drive and latched onto the wheel of Ray Beard at some road works just past the top of the hill out of Havelock. Had a bit of an issue, somewhere between Linkwater & Ngakuta Bay, while following Ray’s line through a corner and had to take some fairly evasive action in a hurry. Some crazy tourist on a bike with a pillion rider on board heading the other way was gesticulating at us as if we had really pissed him off for some unknown reason. It was only after we had gone past that I realised I might have mistaken the rider as a tourist. There was something familiar about him. Not sure if it was the red or pink leather jacket or the BMW bike he was on but on hindsight it just might have been me old mate Peter Unger. I quickly dismissed that idea however as I have never seen Peter go quite as looney as that guy did!!

Upon arrival at Picton Ray headed to his favourite Café on the foreshore while I headed to Burnsco at Waikawa to look at some merchandise I had spotted in their latest catalogue. A cup of coffee at the Jolly Roger was just what the doctor ordered before the ride back to Blenheim. Got home around 4pm to bring the curtain down on another day in paradise and enjoy a cold beer.

19 March 2015 Pelorus Bridge A beaut day for a ride with little wind and a good crew turning up at Brayshaw Park for our scheduled ride to Pelorus bridge. A week ago we were advised that the present lessees, the Neal family and staff, were leaving by the end of this month and another family were taking over. So I had prepared to present them with a goodbye / thank you card signed by Ulysses members present. However on checking on arrival with staff there has been a hitch and because the campground and shop is owned by D.O.C. they have to approve any new lessees which at this stage has not been completed. Still likely to happen but probably not till after Easter so we hold off any presentation until then. Some members might ask what's the reason for our interest. Simply put the management and staff have been really great and are always so chatty, friendly and like to have us " oldies " on. Lou made a comment to me prior to leaving that did I notice that the Railway station car parks were almost empty due to firstly our old site being time limited and the south side now payment needed. Obviously we all much preferred the Railway station than our present meeting place. We will just observe the station over the next wee while before making any changes again. On today's ride were Terry Maloney, Derek Stripling, Lindsay Learmonth, Tony Williams, Suzy Pouwhare, Ray Beard, Dutch, Alan Graham, Tom Brown, Lou Jowers, Peter Nelson, Karl Marshall, Peter Bugler, and the writer. On arrival were Chris Donaldson and Rod Curtis. Thirty minutes later Evan & Margaret Teale turned up. I understand someone forgot to check their fuel tank and ran out of fuel, oops Margaret. The ride out was great and we all managed to pretty much stay together as a group and very little heavy traffic. Did find it definitely a lot cooler so a little heavier gear was needed. After about an hour and a half we left in our usual way. A lovely day out with good friends. Murray #3161

ONE WISH?

Prince Charles was driving around his mother's estate when he accidentally ran over her favourite Corgi, crushing it to a pulp. He got out of his Range Rover and sat down on the grass totally distraught. The whole world was against him and now his mother would go ballistic. Suddenly he noticed a lamp half-buried in the ground. He dug it up, polished it and immediately a Genie apeared. "You have freed me from thousands of years of imprisonment, " said the Genie." As a reward I shall grant you one wish." "Well, " said the Prince, "I have all the material things I need, but let me show you this dog." They walk over to the splattered remains of the dog. "Do you think you could bring this dog back to life for me?" asked the Prince. The Genie carefully looked at the remains and shook his head. "This body is too far gone for even me to bring it back to life. Is there something else you would like?" The Prince thought for a minute, reached into his pocket and pulled out two photos. "I was married to this beautiful woman called Diana,” said Charles, showing the genie the first photo. "But now I love this woman called Camilla,“ and he showed the genie the second photo. "You see Camilla isn’t beautiful at all, so do you think you can make Camilla as beautiful as Diana?" The Genie studied the two photographs, scratched his head, thought about it and after a few minutes said, "Let's have another look at that dog." Kelvin Watson

1pm DOD Ride, 8 March 2015.

There were 5 of us gathered at the Railway carpark and after a bit of a chat it was agreed we would ride to Rai Valley for an ice cream and anyone who would like to go further, we’d decide at Rai Valley.

It was a good relaxed ride on a warm sunny afternoon. The traffic was light and there were no problems passing it when we needed to. The shop at Rai makes the biggest ice creams you can imagine and after I’d finished eating my creation, Stu, Maly and Bill opted to head off back to Blenheim. They had other arrangements to see to and the cricket to watch.

Tom and I decided that the ride over the two saddles to Nelson was too good to miss. The road was in good condition and it’s a brilliant ride. In Nelson we stopped at the beach, sat relaxed in the sun, put the motorcycle world to rights and Tom even considered whether he might have another ice cream – this time from the Mr Whippy van, but the queue was too long the whole time we were there.

The trip home was another brilliant ride. The low sun was on our backs, still keeping us warm. After a bit of a stop at Pelorus to stretch our legs, we arrived in Blenheim just after 6pm. Thanks for the company at Rai Valley Malcolm, Stu & Bill and Thanks Tom for the great ride today.

Cheers, John Laing #5083

SUNDAY RIDE

At the National Art Gallery in Dublin ,a husband and wife were staring at a portrait that had them completely confused. The painting depicted three black men totally naked sitting on a park bench. Two of the figures had black willies, but the one in the middle had a pink willie. The curator of the gallery realised that they were having trouble interpreting the panting and offered his assessment. He went on for over half an hour explaining how it depicted the sexual emasculation of black men in a predominately white, patriarchal society. 'In fact,' he pointed out, 'some serious critics believe that the pink willie also reflects the cultural and sociological oppression experienced by gay men in contemporary society.' After the curator left, an Irishman approached the couple and said, 'Would you like to know what the painting is really about?' 'Now why would you claim to be more of an expert than the curator of the gallery?' asked the couple. 'Because I'm the guy who painted it,' he replied. 'In fact, there are no black men depicted at all! They're just three Irish coal miners. The guy in the middle went home for lunch.' Jane Laing

Not much on today except lawns and the normal household drudgery’s. Saw that Colin Simpson was going to try Saturday’s rides and see how much interest he would get. Well the one sided coin turned up heads, that’s it then- Saturday ride it is. At the Argosy was Colin, Mike Brasch, Kart Marshall (new member). Not long after we were joined by Gisela Schulze, John King and Rob Gridley, a friend of Colin’s who was on for the ride and also checking us out to see if he should join Ulysses or not. Kevin Bright stopped off his way to the hospital to pick up Nicky who unfortunately had some more work to do on her wounds suffered as a result of motor cycle versus sheep. Hope you are feeling better Nicky and it won’t be too long before you are up and about again. We are the reason he was late- sorry. Colin gave us a briefing about where we were going- Motueka via Top House where we would have a catch up. Colin lead the way, Mike was tail end Charlie. A great ride up to Wairau Valley Township where we were joined by Jim Barrett. Weather cooled a little as we got closer to Top House. Another briefing at Top House with the instruction to turn right at the junction and up over the hill. Gisela went on ahead followed close behind by Colin and Rob. I was next to leave, got to the turn off and waited for the others. Bit of a mix up here we turned left at the junction! The ride through here is awesum, great roads and great scenery. Weather warming up now as well.

We regrouped at Tapawera, waited for Mike who had gone back to let Colin and Rob know where we were then it was off to Motueka. These would have to be among some of the best rides at this end of the country. Magnificent trees lining both sides of the roads and lovely swooping bends. Another catch up at the Motueka airport then off to the Elevation Café for lunch. Great service, great food and great company- just the best day. After lunch, a petrol stop then on the home run. Mike, Jim, Gisela and John went on the direct route home, Colin, Rob, Karl and myself rode back through the Moutere Valley. Not far into the ride we had a stop at traffic lights for road works. Further up the hill a Fulton Hogan truck was doing road marking on a newly sealed piece of the highway. Down to a crawl testing our slow riding abilities! It was so hot and the stink of the paint was awful. Rest of the ride to the main highway was the best, Colin set the pace we obliged. Back to the main highways and traffic- slow ride round Tahuna then out to the Whangamoas. I pulled over to let Colin, Rob and Karl go ahead as I knew the boys wanted to have fun. Good ride over the hill, not too much traffic, a couple of camper van and trucks. Stop for a catch up and ice cream at Rai Valley then off for the home run. Thoughts for the day- ride was great- company was great- weather was great- all in all a great day. Everyone on the ride said they enjoyed it and all look forward to another Saturday Cruise with Colin. Susy Pouwhare

CRUISING WITH COLIN. Saturday 14th March.

I would like to thank all those people who have sent their best wishes, flowers, food and supplies to myself and Kevin over the last couple of weeks as I have been recovering from my accident. It is very much appreciated. I am progressing well but it will be a while before I will be back on the bike. I would just like to say that given my involvement as a Ulysses Mentor, I was always under the impression that given the right skills any situation could be mitigated and avoided whilst riding. I now have a new respect for this fact. There are simply some events which despite the best rider skills are simply unavoidable. In my case the sheep walked and ran out onto the road with no warning. They were hidden in long grass and were not visible until on the road. As I was so close to them when they walked out onto the road I had such a short distance to apply my skills to stop or avoid. I was thankful I maintained my composure and applied my brakes in the right fashion to reduce my speed as quickly as possible before the impact. I credit this with the fact I got off quite lightly with my injures, i.e. just peripheral damage and no internal or head injures. So, if there is any lesson to be learned, it is that you can never have too much training and practicing of your road craft skills. Thanks again everyone for your messages of support. Cheers Nicky # 7125

Had I known I’d be writing the trip report maybe I would have been a bit more attentive, counted bikes and people that sort of thing but here we are. There was Bill, Nicky and Kelvin at the railway station when we (Braschs) arrived, followed shortly by a bearded Barry chap on his Triumph. Tom B, John L, Bryce and Denise joined us. Crikey Brocky even showed up, the gad-about, he’d also been out the day before I hear We were all looking expectantly at each other trying to remember who ‘Trip Leader’ was, when he turned up in his car. Mr Bright apologised for not being able to join us (but we let him off) and he was happy to tell us where to go. So indeed, off we went. The Barretts tagged along when we reached Wairau Valley and it was a glorious ride up that long stretch of road. The cloudless sky was a cheerful blue, the air cool and crisp, reminding us that autumn isn’t far away and while I was feeling a bit chilly by the time we reached St.Arnaud, it wasn’t that bad to justify putting another layer on. The garage at St.Arnaud is a great wee place to stop nowadays, it seems the new owners have really got their act together, as well as conveniently having petrol (yes I know it’s a petrol station and that’s what they do) it also has a cafe off the side now, as well as being a fair sized dairy for locals and stocking the odd fashionable merino for the chilly tourist. Anyhoo, we carried on to Murchison, I’m enjoying a nice stress less ride on the back, a lovely day to count your blessings. We spot a bunch of other bikes at Murch and pull over to see if they are the Nelson lot and indeed they were. A sign warned us that the ‘iron bridge’ would only be open for ten minutes on the hour, so we thought we’d get a move on as we didn’t want to be hanging around on the wrong side of the bridge with rumbling tummies. As it happened the bridge was open and no work being carried out, although you could see where they are replacing the wooden boards (one at a time it seems!) presumably they’d be back tomorrow to carry on. Arrived at Berlins to be met by loads of other bikes (you can tell there I didn’t count) but there were loads, forty? Fifty? I really couldn’t tell you, but John and Jim were busy taking photos so if you feel inclined you can count them yourself. As well as the Nelson lot, there were folk from Westport and Greymouth too! And ex-Blenheimite Don Best. Everywhere was rather busy, lots of people admiring bikes and engines and whatever. Quite a nice buzz really, but we had to get inside to get some food otherwise there wouldn’t be any left with this amount of ravenous bikers. The staff were under a bit of strain but there seemed to be enough grub to go around, at least I hope there was, the menu had a good selection at very reasonable prices. Stomachs full and the usual exchange of yarns complete it was time to head home. Some stopped briefly at Murch for fuel and then we managed to call in again to the garage at St.Arnaud for a quick cuppa before riding back up the valley. This is where I apparently volunteered for the trip report. All in all a great day, fantastic weather, good company, thanks Trip Leader. Lorraine Brasch (and a very good trip report it is too! Thank you Lorraine.– Editor)
