Hi all. Happy New Year everyone. By the time you are reading this you will be well into the festive mode I imagine. Nicky & I wish you well and trust you get plenty of down time to go for a ride or two. I would like to extend my thanks to Jo de Reeper for the work she did in or-ganising the meal for our Christmas function. A bit of a hick up with the Spit Roast but it all turned out OK in the end (Boys involved will need to keep the “Cone of Silence” going because if the Sheriff finds out it could be costly). The next big social event on our Branch calendar will be the Kaituna “Back to Basics” Rally. Kelvin has been busy working away on organising a great rally for you all. Please get your registrations in soon as space is limited and I know of many out of town people who are registering to come along. It would be a shame if you missed out. The weekend plans include a BYO BBQ on the Friday evening followed by Rock N Roll music from the resident DJ “Chippie”. A selection of activities on the Saturday, including an invigorating walk around the farm, day trips off to Havelock & a picturesque bike ride into a part of Marlborough many may not have seen. The Saturday evening meal in the woolshed is also provided included in the cost of registration. Remember the date 21st April as this will be the Branch AGM. This year’s committee has been small and it has been suggested to me that some branch activities haven’t happened or have lacked effort from the Committee. Whilst the facts are true I do not accept that the promotion and activities of the Branch are solely the Committee members’ responsibility. There are al-ways good ideas coming forward but the common theme is “I only come up with the ideas the Committee can execute them” and this is not always possi-ble. This is not a Branch issue only I see it at National level as well and with-out more membership participation the Branch and the Club will be very dif-ferent in the future. So, cutting to the bottom line, if you’re passionate about motorcycling, enjoy the company of others with a common interest and would be prepared to put some time into the Ulysses Club come along and join in. Club Subscription renewals are due for many of us this year. They are now overdue for payment and if you intend being a member after 31

st January,

and haven’t paid already you need to do so asap. If you’re unsure when your subs are due, your membership expiry date is on your membership card, or you can drop me an email and I can confirm via my membership list. Whilst I could ramble on for ages it’s time for us to get down to Portage and judge the best picnic set up.

Ride to Akaroa & Punakaiki, Anniversary Weekend 2015.

Tom Brown and I rode down to Akaroa, Robert Graham came down with us as far as Woodend. It was a stunning

day for a ride, calm, sunshine and the beautiful coastline

made your heart happy.

It could have been a straight-forward ride. Before we got to

Kekerengu it was agreed that the boys have a stop there

and I drive through to Kaikoura to meet them there. I wait-

ed, waited and waited, I thought wow I must have been go-

ing flat-out (that’s not like me) wow riding faster than Tom.

The boys hadn’t seen me going past them in Kekerengu ,

they thought I must be in some sort of trouble. They

checked back along the road and ditches. After their search

they decided to go to Kaikoura. They found me waiting and

happily alive. Thanks for looking out for me. After that we

rode uneventfully to Akaroa. It was just beautiful, very calm,

wonderful scenery and very peaceful.

Next morning I left a bit earlier than Tom, so he could enjoy

his ride over the winding road. We found a nice coffee shop

in Lincoln and had a delicious morning tea. Lincoln seems

to be a new little town, new houses on small sections. The

University still had rubble lying around from the earth

quake. Tom lead the way to Arthurs Pass, again we had

perfect weather conditions and were able to enjoy the ride

and scenery.

In Arthurs pass Village Tom met a Ulysses member from

Westport……..and had a catch up with him. We had a

great lunch, but we were under tension, - there were few

Kea’s around who were very skilled in pinching food off our

plates. After lunch we drove down the pass, excellent ride.

We decided to ride via Lake Brunner to Punakaiki. The

road after Moana was closed because of an accident.

Sadly, we found out later it was a motorbike accident and a

rider was killed.

In Punakaiki Suzy Pouwhare was waiting for us. Suzy was

talking to another Ulysses member from Greymouth. Sorry

I can’t remember the name. We stayed at the Speights Ale House, had a great dinner and enjoyed each other’s

company.

We all enjoyed the weekend away.

Tom and I are planning another weekend away. On Waitangi weekend we will be going to Hanmer Springs and on

the second night we are staying at the Blackball Hilton. Everybody is welcome to come along and enjoy a weekend

away. More info closer to the time or just talk to Tom or myself.

RETREADS REPORTS 10

th December 2015 - East Coast Inn, Ward.

Having been AWOL for two months I thought I had better front up today to see how the Retreads Group were pro-gressing in my absence. It was a bit of a shock to arrive at Brayshaw Park to be greeted with the sight of around 24 other bikes. All up around 26 bods which is a pretty dammed good response. Murray further confirmed num-bers had been very high for the last several weeks. I can only assume word had got around that as I have not been present lately its fairly safe to join in with the Retreads on their weekly rides knowing full well any misbehaving will not be reported on in the Club’s monthly bulletin. Having come to that conclusion, and not wanting to jeopardise fu-ture attendance numbers, I feel the only honourable thing for me to do is to resign as the Retreads unofficial scribe in order to allow someone less obnoxious and more accepta-ble to the Retreads family to report on their weekly rides. So there you have it Murray, I’m sure you will be inundated with offers to take over from me!

Today’s attendees included Lindsay Learmonth, Noel & Pip Sutherland, Noel Duff, Derek Stripling, Lou Jowers, Grant & Liz Johnson, Karl Marshall, Jimmy Allan, Danny McGow-an, Chris Donaldson, Murray Brooks, Evan Teale, Ray Beard, Terry Maloney, Dutch, Bill Harrison, Allister & Julie McLeod, Peter Nelson, Peter Unger, John Welch, Stuart Paul, Graham Howard – a prospective new member & bringing up the rear yours truly.

After Murray’s pep talk which included a welcome back for Noel & Pip, an introduction & welcome for Graham and a warning to everyone present that I was back on the scene, it was time to hit the road to Ward. It was a fairly warm day so it was with some relief to get underway and have a bit of a breeze to cool us down a tad. The ride out was unevent-ful apart from having to slow down a few times for earth-quake damage road repairs. Upon arrival it was quite a sight to see all the bikes in the carpark – there wasn’t a hellava lot of space left for the travelling public. In fact whilst we were dining a delivery truck turned up and had to thread its way past the bikes and venture onto the grass verge beyond the car park to actually turn.

Pip Sutherland has a brand new Harley which looks pretty dammed smart – all blue & white with heaps of chrome. It certainly is an eye catcher & Pip looks pretty comfortable on it.

wandered onto the veranda Peter beckoned me over to the table he was seated at & suggested I draw up a chair & sit beside him. He even had a smile on his dial which doesn’t happen very often when I am present. So I thought what the hell, he must be mellowing in his dot-age. When I finally sat down next to him after placing my meal order, a distinct change came over him as he ques-tioned himself as to why in heaven’s name did he ask me to sit next to him as he now had to be on his best behav-iour. There was however an ulterior motive for his invita-tion. It seems Peter has been having some erection is-sues which he wanted to discuss with me. Strange I thought, especially when we had our resident Doctor seated a couple of tables away. To move on he started asking me how I got on with my erection technique to which I responded pretty dammed well, especially since I have a diagram specifically laminated so it doesn’t come to any harm in adverse conditions. He was very intrigued to hear about this instructional diagram and asked me if I would email him a copy as he is convinced he must be lacking in specific parts to function properly. I kindly of-fered to do so as soon as I got home, let’s face it no one likes to see someone botch an erection. So Peter I am dying to know how you got on. Was the diagram of much use? Have you got all the Bibs & Bobs necessary to complete the erection technique? Hopefully with the use of the diagram you will have many successful Caravan Awning erections in future which hopefully do not flop prematurely!

It was good to see Grant partaking of a healthy meal for a change. Instead of his usual bowl of soup he opted for something more substantial like an “all day breakfast”. It even got Liz’s approval as I noticed she had the same!

All too soon it was time to head for home, which meant riding into an ever increasing north westerly. A small price to pay for a good day

THANK YOU MURRAY.

On behalf of the Retreads Group I

would like to Thank Murray Brooks

and his off-sider Lindsay Learmonth for

their efforts in running the Thursday

Retreads Group.

Murray has been a Ulysses member

what works when it comes to

organising the rides.

Lindsay is always there to step in when-

ever Murray cant make it, - so we are

never without a ride on a Thursday.

What's in a name…. Bob Marks

An attorney arrived home late, after a very tough day trying to get a stay of execu-tion. His last minute plea for clemency to the governor had failed and he was feel-ing worn out and depressed. As soon as he walked through the door at home, his wife started on him about’ “What time of night to be getting home is this? Where have you been? Dinner is cold and I'm not reheating it.” And on and on and on. Too shattered to play his usual role in this familiar ritual, he poured himself a shot of whiskey and headed off for a long hot soak in the bathtub, pursued by the predictable sarcastic remarks as he dragged himself up the stairs. While he was in the bath, the phone rang. The wife answered and was told that her husband's client, James Wright, had been granted a stay of execution after all. Wright would not be hanged tonight. Finally realizing what a terrible day he must have had, she decided to go upstairs and give him the good news. As she opened the bathroom door, she was greeted by the sight of her husband, bent over naked, drying his legs and feet. “They're not hanging Wright tonight,” she said.

GREETINGS FROM PETER Hi Jeff 16 Dec ‘15 Yes I am still out here somewhere in the gr eat metropolis of Wanganui. Have been following your emails and the monthly news letter with interest. Just thought I would drop you a short note to wish everybody in Marlborough Ulysses a Merry Xmas and a Great 2016. Am back on the road with a NZ new 2007 VL800 C50T Boulevard. Have not been out on it much as am still sorting out the June flood damage/repairs etc. We are back in the house and slowly getting straight. Have renewed my membership for a further three years and have left it as Marlborough Branch. Hope that's okay? Please pass on my best wishes to every-body in the club, take it easy out there. Regards Peter Bedborough, - (ex Blenheim, now Whanganui)

2015 Branch Christmas Party (13 December)

Our Christmas function on Sunday was a great success.

The meal, location and company were

really good. A big thank you to everyone who came

along and made this an enjoyable event. A really big thank you to those who helped

run the event for all those present. Jo de Reeper the main organiser who ran the event so well ably assisted by

Allan de Reeper. Others who need to be mentioned were Tom Brown, John King, Don Best, They nearly cooked the meal for us. Kevin and

Nicky Bright who helped Jo by cooking half of the meat. Sue and Ian (Mac) Mc Donald who helped all day doing all the extra jobs

that needed to be done.

Also mother (Clause, Claws or was it Claus) Louise Peace and her very helpful elf Jock Woodley. Suzy and Mac Pouwhare for the

use of their Spit Roaster. In the end we didn’t use it, but it was there if needed.

Last but not least Marina Newman. Thanks for helping lay the tables, cleanup and all

the other bits you did.

If I missed any helpers out, thank you for your help. You know who you are. You all

made this a Great Christmas party. Just before 6 pm while at the venue I

received a phone call. Oh Jeff, where is the venue for the Christmas party. It`s at the Car Club at Omaka, I replied. Oh, I know it`s not

at the Cart Club , there no one here said Colin Wynn. If I was giving out a booby

prize who do you think should get it.

to bring me soup and take care of me while I lie in bed and moan. You're a woman. You never get as sick as I do,

so for you, this is no problem. _______________________________________________

Because I'm a man, I can be relied upon to purchase basic groceries at the store, like beer, milk or bread. I can-

not be expected to find exotic items like 'cumin' or 'tofu.' For all I know, these are the same thing.

_______________________________________________ Because I'm a man, when one of our appliances stops

working, I will insist on taking it apart, despite evidence that this will just cost me twice as much once the repair

person gets here and has to put it back together. _______________________________________________

Because I'm a man, I must hold the television remote control in my hand while I watch TV. If the thing has been

misplaced, I may miss a whole show looking for it.....though one time I was able to survive by holding a

calculator..... ______________________________________________

Because I'm a man, there is no need to ask me what I'm thinking about. The true answer is always either sex,

cars, bikes, sex, sports or sex. I have to make up some-thing else when you ask, so don't ask.

_______________________________________________ Because I'm a man, I do not want to visit your mother, or have your mother come visit us, or talk to her when she

calls, or think about her any more than I have to. Whatever you got her for Mother's Day is okay; I don't

need to see it. And don't forget to pick up something for my mother, too. _______________________________________________

Because I'm a man, you don't have to ask me if I liked the movie. Chances are, if you're crying at the end of it, I didn't ..and if you are feeling amorous afterwards....then I

will certainly at least remember the name and recommend it to others.

_______________________________________________ Because I'm a man, I think what you're wearing is fine. I

thought what you were wearing five minutes ago was fine too. Either pair of shoes is fine. With the belt or without it, looks fine. Your hair is fine. You look fine.

Can we just go now? _______________________________________________

Because I'm a man, and this is, after all, the new year 2016, I will share equally in the housework. You just do the laundry, the cooking, the cleaning, the vacuuming, and the

dishes, and I'll do the rest...... Like wandering around in the garden with a beer wondering what to do.

The Bad Tooth - Kelvin Watson

An Irishman walks into a bar, notices a very large jar on the counter filled to the brim with $10 bills. He guesses there's at least thousands of dollars in it. He approaches the bartender and asks, "What's with the money in the jar?" “Well ...you pay $10, and if you pass three tests, you get all the money and the keys to a brand new Lexus." The man certainly isn't going to pass this up, so he asks, "What are the three tests?" "You gotta pay first," says the bartender ,"those are the rules." So, after thinking it over a while, he gives the bartender $10 which he stuffs into the jar. "Okay, "says the bartender, "here's what you need to do: First … Drink a whole quart of tequila in 60 seconds or less, and you can't make a face while doing it." “Second … There's a pit bull chained in the back with a bad tooth. You have to remove that tooth with your bare hands." “Third … There's a 90-year old lady upstairs who's never had sex. You have to take care of that problem." The man is stunned! “I know I paid my $10, but I'm not an idiot! I won't do it! You'd have to be nuts to drink a quart of tequila and then do all those other things!" "Your call," says the bartender, "but, your money stays where it is."

The man has a few more drinks and finally says, "Where's the damn tequila?" He grabs the bottle with both hands and drinks it as fast as he can. Tears stream down both cheeks -but he doesn't make a face -- and he drinks it in 58 seconds! Next, he staggers out the back door where the pit bull is chained to a pole. Soon, the people inside hear loud growling, screaming, and sounds of a terrible fight … then nothing but silence! Just when they think the man surely must be dead, he staggers back into the bar. His clothes are ripped to shreds and he's bleeding from bites and gashes all over his body.

FUN Bike Facts ——Jim Barrett

The Fonz (aka Henry Winkler—TV series, ‘Happy Days’) couldn’t actually ride a motorcycle. In the 1970s cop show CHIPs, Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada, who played bike patrolmen Jon and Ponch, were so dissatisfied when their Kawasaki Z1000s were swapped for BMWs that they put the BMW fairings on the Kawasakis and continued to use them. Contrary to popular opinion, the motorcycles used in Easy Rider have not both been lost or destroyed. One of them, which was wrecked during filming, has been restored by Dan Hagerty, who played Grizzly Adams in the TV show of the same name. No one knows what became of the Triumph 6T ridden by Marlon Brando in The Wild One. its worth £500,000. Street Hawk only ran for 13 episodes. Although BMW claims it has been making Boxer twins continually since 1923, production stopped for a few months in 1986 when the company decided its future lay in triples and fours. Customer outrage persuaded the Germans to restart the twin-cylinder engine production lines. MZ invented two-stroke expansion chambers. The current owners of Bimota-Lorenzo-Ducati is a direct descendant of the original founder of Ducati. Cagiva is a shortening of the words Castiglioni – the founder – and Varese – the town where the company is based. Triumph also makes golf balls. Magnesium wheels are porous, and allow tyres to deflate if the protective paint is scraped off. The same process occurs with alloy wheels, only much more slowly. Dynos only measure torque and engine speed. Peak power is then calculated using a mathematical equation. Titanium ore is abundant. The reason its known as an expensive material is because its strength and hardness makes working with it difficult and costly. Early bike helmets were lined with cork. Before becoming famous for bike helmets, ARAI made helmets for building sites. The founder of ARAI, Hirotake Arai was a stunt rider. Princess Anne and George Harrison have both owned custom-painted ARAI helmets. Barry Sheen’s King helmet was Bell Star helmet with a King sticker on it.
