On October 13 2011 John Selmon discussed the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) with the Bay Window This team was established in August of this year There are 24 members in this team but there are 5 core members These members include John Selmon himself Larry Visconti Becky Evans Gerald Nyland and Sally Birkam The purpose of the team is to maintain the safety health and well-being of MCCrsquos students faculty staff and community It is the responsibility of the team to identify and initiate services or intervention strategies for students with troubling behaviors These behaviors could include substance abuse disruptive conduct mental illness and many other things The reports can be classified as normal or critical Normal reports may be answered the day after being submitted but critical reports will send a text message to the core members so immediate action can take place About 40 reports have been filed so far this school year When asked about what made MCC decide to establish BIT Selmon replied ldquoViolence on college campuses caused colleges to start monitoring student conduct and behavior to prevent it This way we can get involved earlyrdquo Once a report is filed the student that the complaint is filed against will be brought to the BIT members to discuss their behavior and hear their side of the story ldquoWe try to intervene and prevent situations that will have to [suspend] the student from the campusrdquo states Selmon The procedures for the meetings are very discrete and do not violate any privacy rights Anyone can file reports against students other students staff and even visitors can file Access to the report sheet and more information about it is available on the MCC homepage Students can go to ldquoCurrent Studentsrdquo and scroll down to ldquoStudent Conduct Reporting Formrdquo The faculty staff and administrators can access the reporting form on the ldquoFacultyStaff Infordquo web page If the situation could be life threatening everyone is advised to call the police first Then file the report

Presented by MCCrsquos ldquoOverbrook Playersrdquo the play drew strong crowds during its 5-day run at the Overbrook Theater The show which concluded on Sunday followed the efforts of one man as he

struggles against the local powers and the media to speak an ldquoinconvenient truthrdquo The play was written by Henrik Ibsen and adapted to the American stage by Arthur Miller ldquoAn Enemy of the Peoplerdquo was the

MCC troupersquos first show of the season As an offering of the Muskegon area Arts and Humanities Festival 2011 and the theme HOME the action of the play deals with an upheaval in a small Norwegian town when a local doctor discovers pollution in the waters that feed the townrsquos main industry In keeping with the theme of HOME the town was populated by MCC alumni and staff some of whom were in the Overbrookrsquos original 1972 production of this play A riveting night of theater - and as relevant today as it was when it was written in 1882 ldquoEnemyrdquo was produced by Sheila Kulp Wahamaki directed by Tom Harryman designed by Brian Goodman with costumes by Jeanette Wahr and stage managed by student Michael Munson The MCC student cast included Dustin Day Lauren Thiele Andrew Rocco Steward Cory Goodrich Jarod Peterson Tre Wesley Perry Casey Webb Michael Pollock Sean Rust Colleen Murphy Clayton Cudney Edward Draven Hall Tiffanie Miller and Travis Shepherd

Here at the Bay Window we have heard some rumors that the punishment for smoking on campus has been increased ndash to the point of expulsion So I was assigned the task of investigating When asked what has changed with the smoking policyrsquos enforcement since its enactment President Dale Nesbary made it clear that he wasnrsquot aware any recent changes to the ldquoTobacco Free at MCCrdquo policy He went on to say that he didnrsquot believe that there needed to be any repercussions because students and staff should understand that its important and ldquothere for a reasonrdquo He recommended for me to speak with Rosemary Zinc ndash Vice President of Finance and Administration ndash and she was unaware of any changes as well In fact she was unaware of any procedures to deal with smokers other than telling them to stop As she said ldquoitrsquos just a policy donrsquot do thisrdquo

The Board of Trustees passed the policy for Muskegon Community College to be tobacco free The reasons were to help keep the environment and healthier for both staff and students The efforts havenrsquot been hindered due to lack repercussions so there really shouldnrsquot be any reason to have them On the other hand the reason that the policy did so well could be the fact that normal students donrsquot know that it is Just a Policy

On October 5th Jason De Leon University of Michigan professor and host of the show ldquoAmerican Treasuresrdquo on the Discovery Channel came to MCC to give a lecture the first of the series of lectures that MCC will present over the school year on how anthropology is helping us to understand the experience of immigrants that have passed over the Arizona border

Tobacco Free at MCC is Just a Policy

Using Anthropology to Understand Immigrationfrom Mexico Using evidence from the objects that immigrants have disposed along their journey to the United States and treating the sites of the disposal as an archeological find Leon has been able to understand the nature of the immigrantrsquos travel He discussed the hardship of the expedition from northern Mexico from ravenous bajadores (essentially bandits) and misguided coyotes (those that guide immigrants through the rugged terrain of the Arizona desert to the lack of water and sometimes death of exhaustion During their crossing to the United States the immigrants discard items that Leon has been able to render into an image of the person(s) that carried them He stressed these objects importance to our

BENJAMINGLICK

heritage by using the analogy of the relics we still find at the bottom of the Hudson river in New York to study the lives of Irish immigrants He also talked of a number of factors that affect migration such as post-911 politics and technology The politics of immigration the most influential of which comes from Arizona deal with the distribution of security monitors and even the application of drones used to seek combatants in the wars in the Middle-East But ultimately it seemed that the point of this was that no matter the concentration of deterrence from state politics to drones and security forces that there is no effective measure to stop the flow of human migration because it levels itself to an act of nature

The Saturday after Reel Steal was released to theaters my friends and I all went to see it I wasnrsquot expecting it to be a great movie but what I got was more than worth the price of the ticket Being a simple person all I wanted to see were a couple of giant robots smashing each other into little pieces and there was plenty of that Personally I think there should have been more but in retrospect there was a pretty good balance Unfortunately the foundation of a movie cannot be based solely on the image of two god-like machines fighting it out for their ownerrsquos financial benefit so they brought in a kid From that point on the movie follows an almost formulaic process thatrsquos been overdone in so many other films Spoiler alert Dad is a bum dad gets kid for summer kid finds robot kid fights robot dad and kid grow close robot wins where he definitely shouldnrsquot have every bodies happy until dadrsquos past comes to light dad ditches kid a auntrsquos house dad apologizes they fight robot they win the moral victory end of spoiler For the most part you can tell whatrsquos going to happen about three and a half minutes ahead of the movie Two words fighting robots and in the end thatrsquos what the movie was really hinging on Cookie cutter movies like this tend to drag on and on and on but this one didnrsquot Instead it kept me routing for the

Real Steel Original But Disappointing

BENJAMINGLICK

Okay letrsquos be honest here Real Steel isnrsquot going to win an Oscar nor is it going to garnish acclaim from critics and it shouldnrsquot Real Steel a futuristic boxing flick centered around a dead-beat dad his estranged son a possibly sentient robot and their will to carry on even after defeat is eye-candy and shouldnrsquot be taken for anything beyond its superficial characters poorly grafted plot and Hollywood rhetoric If you want a good movie just to sit back and turn your brain off to Real Steel is kind of what yoursquore looking for Irsquom not going to bother going into what I thought was wrong with it cinematically because this movie doesnrsquot even deserve the attention that Irsquom reaping for it now And to be perfectly honest whatever was wrong with it is irrelevant because what Real Steel represents isnrsquot a commentary on societyrsquos lust for blood-sports but

father son and robot trio the entire way A true underdog story enough so to melt even the thickest processor (get it robot joke never mind) The whole experience lasted about 120 minutes but it was a very short 120 minutes At times the movie gave me the same feeling I had watching the Lions at Texas intense and if I hadnrsquot been in the theater Irsquod have been cheering the entire time It was this intensity that brought the movie from ok to good for a cookie cutter movie that is Seven and a half thumbs up out of ten

rather that movies main stream movies have become less of an artistic statement by the directorwriter and are just another product that we consume on a mass level What do they call that oh yeah consumerism Ironically with all the realistic special effects Real Steel presents it just seems as mechanical as the robots that the story is based on I mean I was aware that there was a story and that there were characters that took place in a world as dull and uninteresting as a drive down Getty street (no offense) But I didnrsquot care about any of it even leading up to the climax and there was a climax that used every Hollywood trope that one can think of (kid and love interest have tears rolling down their face in slow motion as hero claims ldquovictoryrdquo) But I do have to give credit to Real Steel it wasnrsquot a remake or a sequel unlike most things that have come out this year And although it was crudely adapted from a short story in The Twilight Zone it managed not to be a remake of Footloose So in a way Irsquom grateful to Hollywood for doing something that was in fact original but also disappointed in that it was another mass produced movie that I will more than likely forget about in a week

The Ides of March Movie Review

BIANCABOVA

Photo courtesy of Sony PicturesPromotional poster for the Sony Picture ldquoThe Ides of Marchrdquo

Based on Beau Willimonrsquos 2008 play entitled Farragut North George Clooneyrsquos latest film The Ides of March follows political staffer Steven (Ryan Gosling) from his idealism to the furthest annul of political integrity as he works the promising campaign trail for the next United States President (George Clooney) Clooney aside from providing the first-rate performance wersquove come to expect from him wrote the screenplay in such a manner that it never crosses into cheap

political-thriller territory but rather takes a realistic approach exploring the world of backhanded political intrigue in a thoroughly human if not at times exceedingly bleak lens Clooney also directed the picture and did so with an artistry that complimented its understated atmosphere Ryan Gosling once again proved his versatility outside of the indie genre and gave the perfect intensity to his role The additionally star-studded cast includes top-notch performances by Phillip Seymour Hoffman Marisa Tomei Paul Giamatti and Evan Rachel Wood The bottom line is is yoursquore looking for an action-packed thrill ride of overly dramatic stories of political backstabbing and rivalry this is not for you Rather you find The

Ides of March is a film that lives up to the reference in its title a film that explores the effects of human error on politics and the effects of politics on the human condition

NBA Season Looks Bleak

The way things are looking there may not be an NBA season this year NBA commissioner David Stern has already cancelled the first 2 weeks of the season The pre-season which is supposed to be happening now has been cancelled as well Stern has publicly stated that ldquoWe remain very very far apart on virtually all issues We just have a gulf that separates us We are so far aparthellipwe canrsquot close the gap With every day that goes by I think we need to look at further reductions on whatrsquos left of the seasonrdquo This happened before back in the 1998-1999 season where the season was reduced to only 50 games The Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA championship in that shortened season The 1st of 3 straight championships The NBA is coming off a highly-anticipated and successful season From the combined talents of Lebron James Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh to the Miami Heat to whether the Los Angeles Lakers would get their 2nd 3 peat in a decade If the NBA is to be locked out for the whole season it will be devastating to the players and more importantly the fans

Cody Kleeves The Jayhawkrsquos Cody Kleeves is one of the greatest shooters I have ever seen in my life He can make it from anywhere beyond the 3 point line Irsquove seen this guy 4 feet behind the line and make 4 to 5 in a row effortlessly You can guard him and put a hand in his face and he will continue to make shots making you look silly for trying Not only can he shoot he also has pretty good dribbling skills that help him create his own shot

He was clearly the best player on the team (respectively) and will probably keep that title this upcoming season Cody led the Jayhawks last season in scoring averaging 17 points per game He shot 40 from the field 38 from the 3 point line and 70 from the free throw line He made ninety-nine 3 pointers last season as well When the game was on the line Cody was the one we wanted the ball to go to Hersquos proven himself to the community that he is a force to be reckoned with You can catch him in this upcoming season wearing the 1 jersey Watch and be amazed at this guyrsquos game Itrsquos phenomenal
