Upgrades to the College Up for Public Vote

Muskegon County residents will vote on more than who becomes President of the United States this November They will also vote on a millage requesting funds for development-projects of four major areas of the college The millage would cost a taxpayer $198 a month (based on a home whose value is $100000) These areas include

middot the mathscience wing with plans to add onto the current labs with a two-level addition as well as new equipment and space that could mimic real-life science and

medical facilities middot the Bartels-Rode Gymnasium with plans to renovate and expand which could end up leading to additional courses to be taught at the college middot the Arts and Humanities Department with plans to improve the Overbrook Theatre as well as give the students a better space than the pole barn they are currently taught in middot a planned 35000 square foot satellite-facility to be constructed downtown if money is left over

Residents of the community have mixed reactions that are relative to the downturn of Muskegonrsquos economy and the need for training in skills directly related to jobs here in the city

ldquoI wouldnrsquot approve this millagerdquo said Ty Reminga a Grand Valley University alum and Montague business owner who resides in Muskegon ldquoI have nothing to do with this college why should I have to pay for improvements for their (MCC) institutionrdquo Reminga feels the projected yearly $24 that would be taken out of his taxes if the millage were approved isnrsquot his responsibility to giveldquoI have received letters from GVSU asking for money all the timerdquo Reminga said ldquoI give them money Why wouldnrsquot (MCC)

just do the same Why wouldnrsquot they ask their alums for donations have parties sell candy bars do something But do not ask us(the taxpayers) for more moneyrdquo

Another area residentmdashAlex Mooremdashfelt similar to Reminga

ldquoIf theyrsquore going to ask us for moneyrdquo Moore said ldquoshouldnrsquot they ask us for our opinion on what to do with the moneyrdquo Moore believes the money should go to the training of jobs related to Muskegon fields rather than the arts program or the gymnasium ldquoI think the money would be better fit to decrease the wait-time of the nursing program Last I heard it was three-yearsrdquo

ldquoI think itrsquos (the millage) a welcome additionrdquo said Nick Bessinger a lifelong resident of Muskegon and businessman in the area ldquohellipIrsquod be willing to pay the extra money per yearhellip(MCC) would bring inhellippeople from rural areashellipnot to mention the increase traffic to downtown Muskegon if that (satellite facility) were to get approvedrdquo

In defense of his millage request MCC President Dr Nesbary said ldquoJob training and the MCC Bond Proposal are congruent not exclusive Each of the three major priorities (mathscience wing gymnasium and arts department)hellipare designed specifically to directly educate and train students in critical (fields) or upgrade facilities supporting critical thinking and creativityrdquo

Nesbary says that the arts do not mean less-skills for the students only more skill sets and better problem-solving skills ldquoA number of fields of study to the artshelliplead to real jobs and employment Broad research demonstrates the value of arts in economic developmentrdquo Nesbary added Nesbary proposed to get the students out of the current art building located separately from the rest of the college near the back in a pole barn

ldquoThe (current) fine arts building ishellipan ill-equipped pole barnhellipopened in 1976 as a lsquotemporary spacerdquoNesbary said

ldquoItrsquos not unlike living in a barnrdquo said Tim Norris department chair for MCCrsquos arts and humanities department ldquoOur students deserve better If we had (more) usable space we could offer more classes to better meet the needs of our studentsrdquo

Both Nesbary and Norris agree that the needs of tomorrow need to be looked

at as well as the needs of today ldquoMuskegon continues to transform itselfrdquo

says Norris ldquohellipwe canrsquot just look at the role (the arts) plays in our community todayhellipwe must plan for the futurehelliplike churches libraries museumshellipthe arts improves a personrsquos quality of liferdquo

Student Government President Eric Howard is all-in for the millage

ldquoThese departments (do) deserve the renovationsrdquo he said ldquoThere are other areas needed improvinghellipbut the college has done a good job of prioritizing (the renovations) A new gymnasium would keep students at the gym longerhellipthey could open it to the community during the weekend at a certain costrdquo

As a nursing student Howard has used every lab space the college has to offer ldquoThis area is the most in need of improvementsrdquo he said ldquoThe biology study room and the storage rooms are painfully smallhellipto accommodate more studentshellipitrsquos imperative to expandhellipclassroomsrdquo

Whatever motive the individual may have for agreeing with or disagreeing with the millage set to be voted on in November it has become increasingly clear that the college is in need of reno-vations But is the community at handmdashespecially members such as Moore and Reminga who have little or nothing to do with (MCC)mdashwilling to pay a pro-jected yearly tax of $24 to improve the facility and the community it surrounds

ldquoI would ask them what is more focused than expanding fields in educationhellipand creating jobsrdquo said Howard ldquoIf people say the tax is too muchhellipmaybe you have to give up a dinner at a restaurant one nighthellipgive up pop for a weekhellipor work a couple extra hours I would ask them (res-idents who oppose the millage) to think how easy it would be to save $24 a yearrdquo

Politics The word makes me cringe every time I hear it Every four years we have to tolerate the nonstop barrage of critical commercials disparaging one candidate or the other It seems to start earl ier last longer and there seems to be more ldquomudslingingrdquo than ever befo re I t i s remin i scent o f elementary school antics Ever been in a situation where you had two friends that hated each other and would

constantly comp lain about the other one to you That is what this reminds me of Often I donrsquot want to vote for either candidate I would rather avoid the whole situation and not vote at all

On the other hand it wasnrsquot until 1920 that women were allowed the right to vote I know that many fought for that right To that end I should honor those before me that gave me the right to voice my opinion Think also of the many in the armed forces that fight so that we may keep our freedom I have never lived under a dictator and hopefully never will I have a soldier to thank for that For all of those that gave their life to protect our freedom I need to honor that sacrifice by voting

Ignorance is not bliss in this case either There are many items on the ballot that can affect our daily lives For example some politicians would like to eliminate

Pell Grants and make getting a student loan more difficult Knowing what is on the ballot and what the issues are will make a huge difference Again I cringe because I have so much homework to do and other things that just seem more important than taking the time to get the right information This though is important If we are to maintain our rights and freedoms we must be vigilant

So I know many of you like me roll their eyes every time there is an election Keep in mind how many people fought for this right Turning 18 and being able to vote may not seem like a big deal When you consider that your voice may change the outcome of a vote it becomes powerful There are often situations where the vote was decided by a very small majority especially in local governments Take back your power and voice your opinion Vote in November

In this election season voters see a lot of mud-slinging TV commercials political cartoons magazine ads and campaign billboards This type of art is called persuasive design The Bay Window decided to interview a political artist for their opinion on the 2012 election

Erin Hoffman fine arts teacher at Muskegon Community College and advisor of the Art and Graphic Design Club currently has her political art up for display Itrsquos located just outside the main doors of the Overbrook Theater She created ldquoA War to End All Warsrdquo in 2010 which depicts scenes from crucial US battles through collage It was appropriately completed before the 10th anniversary of 911 Hoffman said ldquoEvery war seems like itrsquos going

Hoffman admits when asked about her vote ldquoIrsquom a Democrat so Obama I agree with a lot of his pointsrdquo While the major presidential issues of economy gay rights and womenrsquos r ights are churning up some controversy this elect ion isnrsquot provoking as much enthusiasm from the American public as the 2008 Presidential election We asked Hoffman her opinion and she mused ldquoThis election just isnrsquot as sexy We were choosing either the f i rst African-American President or the first female Vice President in 2008rdquo

In regards to young voters there have been Voter ID law changes in some states that discourage young voters to

Lost in the shadows Chasing my thoughts As they circle around

I feel as if Irsquoll drown

Thoughts and feelings intertwine As they enter and exit my mind

Through my soul I open the window and set them free

When the confusion engulfs me in worry

You appear to save me and make me safe Your arms wrap around me and hold me close

They let me know that I have finally found home

Home is where I want to stay Where the darkness is unwelcome

And the corners are all lit with the light of a thousand suns Where the dawn and dark never come

This is MCCrsquos first year with a wom-enrsquos soccer program This team is loaded with freshmen and has only one sophomore Savannah Swan-son The Lady Jayhawks are being coached by Josh Watson He was an all-state player in high school and also played collegially at Western Michigan University Coach Watson has been coaching for 19 years now

Freshmen Autumn Brodeur talk-ed to me about her coach and she said ldquoHersquos not like any other coach Irsquove had Coach Watson tells us what we have to do and what needs to be done Hersquos not yelling at us at what we should be doing He knows whatrsquos best out on the field for us individually and that way we can put everything together to win as a team Coming into our first season I was nervous to see how he would react to some things and hersquos handled everything very wellrdquo

The first ever Muskegon Communi-ty College Womenrsquos soccer game took place in Battle Creek against Kellogg Community College Ashlee Taylor from Mona Shores recorded the first goal ever by a Lady Jay-hawk She was assisted by Linsye Haan from Fruitport They are both now forever in the record books for that goal and assist that took place 15 minutes into the game

The gamersquos score was tied 1-1 at halftime Freshmen Anna Carmean from Fruitport scored the Lady Jay-hawkrsquos second goal to put them up 2-1 over Kellogg Community College With eight minutes remaining on the clock KCC scored a goal to the tie

Womenrsquos Soccer Kicks off initial Seasonthe game at 2-2 Regulation ended and the game ended with the score of 2-2 draw The Lady Jayhawks last game was played on October 7th against Owens Community College OCC scored pretty early in the match at 2 minutes and 48 seconds and our Lady Jayhawks couldnrsquot recover of-fensively and defensively and lost the game 3-0 Despite three goals Fresh-men Goalkeeper Emily Manchester from Muskegon had eight saves and the team shot the ball 4 times The Lady Jayhawks came fairly close to scoring on a couple corner kicks but

just couldnrsquot get the ball in the goal This is a young team and they play very well together A couple more games together and this team is go-ing to be playing more as a unit and become a team to watch out for

Autumn Brodeur told Bay Window ldquoThe potential of our team is at its finest probably right now We are halfway through our season and are starting to play like the team we are We had a crucial loss to Owens Com-munity College this past Sunday but we are finally playing together and that loss can only make us stronger
