FOREWORD

HISTORY The invention of the cuneiform writing came around 4000 BC with the first signs of organized astral cult in Mesopotamia. My research (Melammu Symposium, 2008, Sofia) proves that the Sumero-Babylonian Astrology came into being around 5,500 BC - in times pre-historic. Astrology or better Astro-Sophy was given then to the prophet of God, Enmeduranki in a Revelation. Astrology is the art to correlate events in Sky with events on Earth. Many achievements in the observational Astronomy in Babylonia are unsurpassed even today, e.g. the prediction of the heliacal phases. We should forget all Astrology books we have read, we should erase from our mind all we know about Astrology before we start investigating Babylonian Astrology. And this is but only the first step, the theoretical lab-class of the student-navigator. The real Babylonian Astrology experience, the real journey of the captain, starts and ends with the personal sky observation.

PRINCIPLES 1: The Light is the primary medium for communication of the stars. God is Light and the whole World is made of Light. The medium of God through which He may show us what He wants is the Light. The Light is the object of sight and sight is our primary sense. The stars emanate their essence outward into Light and let us know them thereby. The more shiny a star, the stronger. The steadier its light, the steadier its nature. When it shines on Earth for the most part of the night (un-annihilated by the solar light), then the peak of its influence. When the star cannot be seen, then the trough of its influence. 2: The picture of the celestial firmament, directly observed by the unaided eyes of the astrologer, is the essence of Babylonian Astrology. No ephemeris, no books, no computer program is Babylonian Astrology. Not a part of the sky is to be observed, but the whole sky since the whole firmament is the screen of the Divine projection. Each and every point on the sky- with its luminosity and color- is an integral part of the picture that God draws for us every moment. And what we see on the firmament with our own eyes only is what is important.

Since this book was written in 2000, a lot of new material came into my hands. The section on the Arcus visiones of the planets is according to the Schoch values which give valid results only for Jupiter and Venus. All graphics here are made with my computer programs ‘Placidus’ and ‘Babylonia’. All drawings are by Antoaneta Georgieva. All photos by me. References to the bibliography on page 60, are given in brackets and preceded by ‘b.’, like...(b. 1), meaningitem number 1 in the bibliography. The book was written during Abu 2000. For up-to-date research on the topic published in the Babylonian Sky Observer, please contact the author.

a THE OMEN OF VENUS INSIDE THE PLEIADES Original cuneiform text, latin transliteration and translation. The omen is computed for the time-frame 1550-2052. Discussed are its cycles and the historical events.

a THE 'PATHS' OF THE SKY This is a detailed analysis of the concept of the 3 'paths' of the sky. Discussed are its origins, meaning and exact computation. A table is constructed with the boundaries between EN.LIL, AN and EA for different latitudes. In the end are tabulated the expected heliacal rises of all planets for Washington DC 2006 and the paths they occur in.

a THE H. RISE OF SIRIUS ACC. TO THE ANCIENT GREEKS The amazing account of Cicero is given here about a custom of the ancient Greeks. Discussed are my personal observations of the heliacal rise of Sirius. In the end there is a table with the heliacal rise of Sirius for different latitudes and 4 types of atmosphere.

a THE 12 TASKS OF THE BABYLONIAN STAR SCIENCE Here are discussed the tasks in the field today.

a MY MEETINGS WITH PROF. DAVID PINGREE In memoriam of his passing away I give here a short, frank and chilling account of my talks with the distinguished scholar.

THE WESTERN HORIZON Venus and Mercury can be Evening stars and appear above the western horizon shortly after sunset. How is this case to be treated (what concerns the 'paths')? How can we assess the path in which Venus or Mercury appear for the first time as evening stars? I am not aware of any hints coming from the ancient tradition, but logically we can construct the paths also along the western horizon. I assume simply that in the same way as we observed the sunrises so now we must watch the sunsets on the 30th of Airu and on the 1st of Addar. The azimuths and the declinations of the setting Sun will give us the boundariesbetween the paths along the west. Look at figure 4 and 5.

THE TWELVE TASKS OF

THE BABYLONIAN SCIENCE OF THE STARSAND THE 'PLACIDUS RESEARCH CENTER' IN PARTICULAR

I am not sure that at present the Babylonian Star Science even exists. A language exists when it is spoken, a science exists when it is practiced. I regularly observe the sky. But the fact that one man in the whole world watches the sky the babylonian way- Is this enough to say that the Babylonian Astro-Science is practiced today? Rather it must be one of these states be-tween death and life when we do not know which one will take the upper-hand. This is not a new problem, but actually very old. This is a problem that like a shadow was born and followed and follows now even closer every step of the modern research of the Babylonian Astronomy... and overshadows it! By far, the greatest danger here is the fact that from the very start of the research in the end of the 19th century, it was totally dominated by theoreticians! Thousands of pages were written, but not a single observation wasmade! As a consequence we still do not have a valid heliacal theory1. Practically this means that no-one in the wide world knows when, for example, Mercury or Betelgeuse will become visible for the first time!....2

Here we come to the FIRST and SECOND tasks:1: To observe and record heliacal phenomena3- something that has not been done since the last astronomical tablet was inscribed in Babylon in 70 AD. In more general words: to conduct, develop and promote the practice of the Babylonian Star Art. The product of this, I hope, will be a large corpus

1: Look at page 48 for explanations of heliacal theory. How will we explain that despite the huge amounts of tax and private-donor money flowing to the many Oriental and Astronomical departments, they have notproduced a single observation, let alone a corpus of observations....? The reason for this very unfortunate state is that simply no-one among the publishing scholars in the last 120 years (!) took the Babylonian Astronomy seriously enough in order to risk the cold outside for a few practical observations. For them this was a subject of interest only to an antiquarian, reclused behind the walls of his museum and shaded from the sky by thick, protective roof. Needless to say, the resultsof such an approach cannot be very glamorous nor can they be truthful.2: To become visible for the first time is 'to heliacally rise'. Look at page 48 for explanations of heliacal rise. 3: Look at page 48.

Discussion of Observation 6: The morning last was observed without doubt on the 11th. Here, again I think that the real magnitude of Mercury should have been -1.85 since Sirius has almost the same AV (in its 2000 MF apparition at the same place few days later), being -1.5 mag. and 55z apart in azimuthform the Sun. The Jupiter data confirms this. If we accept that Mercury here is only -1.3 mag. then we cannot explain how Mercury with 0.2 magnitudes dimmer than Sirius and 50z closer inazimuth to the solar halo, should be seen with the same AV as Sirius! Nor can we explain the Jupiter data. Neither can we explain this with variation in the atmospheric extinction. With -1.3 brightness Mercury could be seen with such AV only if the extinction is around 0.16. A variation of 0.20 in the extinction in the course of few days is very improbable. I have also never observed extinction in Bulgaria lowerthan 0.24!

A CLOSE DOUBLE OF OMINA 22 and 23 AND A CLUE

Another place of interest is in Ach, 2 Supplement, Ishtar 63, Col.1, line 14:

A2MUSHEN 2 DINGIRTSAL.BAD.A.NU MASH.ANSHE KUR

HA.A

The (repeat) part designated here by the sign for '2' has in mind a passage several lines above. This passage is:

MESH.HA IM.SHU.UH ....

In line 14 the Eagle is identified with Mars. That said we can stop here. However, there is a lot more to be explained... The omen cited here is extremely similar, if not the same, to omen 22 from the 57th tablet. They both deal with the Eagle and a 'mesh.hu im.shuh' and then say that this forbodes destruction of the domestic animals...If we inspect the other lines, we will see that they deal, in a similar way, with 'mesh.ha im.shuh' connected with around 20 other stars and some planets and what this means for the world. The first line starts like this: Shumma MUL SHU.PA MESH.HA IM.SHU.UH ... If the star Shupa mesh-ha im-shuh...The question now is:

WHAT IS 'MESH-HU', WHAT IS 'IM-SHUH' AND

WHAT IS 'MESH-HU IM-SHUH' ?

No-one so far has positively and convincingly explained the meaning of the babylonian astrological term 'mesh-hu im-shuh'. The pandits in this tough field are not revealing much. Herman Hunger told me in 2006 in a private conversation in his office in Vienna that 'it is unknown what is 'mesh-hu imshuh', but that it is most probably some kind of lumi-nous phenomenon'. Pingree in his BPO3 (b.11) writes "we do not know exactly what a mesh-hu (also called shabihu) is, but suspect it to be a mirage..."

The transliteration-normalization of Weidner, I found in his personal archive in the Library of the Oriental Institute in Vienna. It was typed on a sheet of paper and put between the pages of his personal copies of Virolleaud's EAE booklets. It was almost the same as that of Virolleaud. On the top of the page was typed: 'ACh Ishtar XXI und 2. Suppl. LXXIII (neu zusammengestellt) Obvers' which says that Weidner has combined several omina from Virolleaud in order to come up with his result.

E. Weidner:

- mul SHUDUN ina atsi-shu2 ana ereb shamshi panu-shu2 shaknu nu

pan shame tapallas-ma sharu mimma la iziqa qa hushahhu ishshakan an palu shahlukti amut ut i-bi-dsin shar uri ki kamus-su

ana an-sha-an ki illaku ku i-bak-ku-u2 KI-MINA i-ma-qu-tu.

(here 'ts' = s with a dot below and 'sh' = s with the check-sign above). Now we come to the translations which are all different:

Koch-Westenholz:

If the Yoke Star in its appearance faces towards the west , you watch the whole sky, and if no wind stirs: there will be famine, a disastrous reign. (It

is an omen) of Ibbi-Sin, king of Ur, who went to Elam in captivity, weeping.

H. Hunger:

If the Yoke is turned towards sunrise (?) when it comes out and faces the front of the sky, and no wind blows: there will be famine, the dynasty will disappear; omen of Ibbi-Sin, king of Ur, who went in fetters to Anshan;

after him his people weep, variant: fall.

P. Goessmann, page 211, article about SHUDUN (in German):

Wenn das Jochgestirn bei seinem Aufgang ostwaerts gerichtet ist, bei Tag sichtbar ist und kein Wind weht, wird Not sein; die Regierung wird

untergehen. Translation in English:If the Yoke star in its appearance is turned toward the East, (and) is seen by

daylight and no wind blows, there will be need, the government will fall.

If the Yoke Star in its appearance faces towards the west , you watch in front of the sky, and if no wind blows: there will be famine, destruction of the dynasty. Omen of Ibbi-Sin, king of Ur, ( he and his people) went in

fetters to Elam, weeping , variant: falling

If we translate the normalization of Weidner, it would be like:

Together, the Sun and the Moon ruled the fates of the countries. Every babylonian month, when the Moon disappeared, the babylonians believed that the Moon and the Sun were sitting together making decisions for the land. The first of every month, heralded by the thin crescent of the Moon over the western horizon, was observed as sign for the whole month. Other phenomena observed were eclipses, halos of light, conjunctions with planets and stars. The eclipses were always trouble. Important here was the month, the day and the watch of the eclipse and then- its exact path over the Moon disk and its color. A child born when the Moon appears has bright, excellent, regular and long life. A child born when the Moon is eclipsed has dark, obscure, difficult and short life. In Enuma Anu Enlil tablets 1 to 23 deal with the lunar omens.

THE ANCIENT PRIEST VERSUS

THE MODERN SCHOLAR

TWO METHODS FOR PREDICTING THE HELIACAL PHASES OF THE PLANETS

In the Babylonian Astral Science the heliacal phases of the stars areimportant. And they are probably the most important phenomena of all. The apparitions of the planets for the first time before sunrise are powerful and awe-inspiring events that were closely watched by the priests and feverishly awaited by the kings. Without question, the prediction of these events was the main goal ofthe Babylonian Astronomy. While the babylonian priest was interested in them in order to foresee the future and consequently prepare his king and his country for the tides to come, the modern scholar has much more idealistic motives... He wants to date ancient texts or to infer the place of their composition... Irrespective of the motives though, the ability to compute the heliacal phases of the stars, is of the same utmost import for the scholar as it was forthe priest... Though that the aim is the same, the ways may be quite various. The ancient priest and the modern scholar employ different methods for astronomical prediction and consequently one of them is much more successful in the task than the other... In order to find out who is the champion, we will investigate here their methods in principle and in example.

THE BABYLONIAN PUZZLEOR

THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE OMEN

MUL Dil-bat ina ur-ri IGI"VENUS IS SEEN IN DAY-LIGHT"

Imagine one day you receive in the post a puzzle coming from Babylonia. Since it has traveled thousands of years, more than half of the pieces that make the puzzle are lost. The present state of the babylonian Astrology is exactly like this puzzle. It is comprised of scattered pieces of knowledge, pieces hidden in the facts of the archaeology, the history, the cuneiform, the astronomy and several more sciences... There are also numerous traps- fake reconstructions of the puzzle. A real reconstruction of the puzzle is such that all pieces fall together easily and nicely and a beautiful picture emerges.

THE OMEN

The omen is the fractal of the Babylonian Astrology. It consists of 2 parts explicitly or implicitly joined with the word IF

(SHUMMA). ( 'IF' / 'WHEN' )THIS happens in the sky; (protasis, present tense)(MA) ('THEN' / 'AND')THAT happens on the earth. (apodosis, present tense) Quite simple. Around 7000 such omens are gathered in the famous babylonian astro-logical canon SHUMMA AN DINGIR EN-LIL known broadly as 'Enuma Anu Enlil' 1

1: This is the 'Bible of the Babylonian Astrologers'. It contains omina mentioning Sargon the Great (~2400 BC) and the Sumerian king of the third dynasty of UR Ibbi-Sin (~2300 BC). Only 30% of Enuma Anu Enlil is translated in modern European languages- often with huge errors.

a THE PERFECT MONTH a

1: The modern Assyriology in describing these 'perfect' schemes uses the word 'IDEAL', 'ideal year', 'ideal month' and so on. Look at Brown David, 'Mesopotami-an Planetary Astronomy-Astrology', Styx, Groningen 2000. (from now on: MPAA)2: In my book 'The Babylonian Astrology & Astronomy- Basic Concepts', I have explained in details the heliacal phases of the Moon.

The most important days in the babylonian month are the days of the heliacal phases of the Moon. These phases are New Crescent (NC), First Quarter (FQ), Acronychal Rise (AR), Cosmic Setting (CS), Last Quarter (LQ) and Last Crescent (LC). It is very important to remember that these phases are different from the modern phases of the Moon. The modern First Quarter (FQ) is different from the babylonian First Quarter. I will not go into details here, but direct the reader to examine carefully the inside front cover. 2. For the babylonian astrologer-priest, the main 2 things in a month to look at, were the following:

The New Crescent of the Moon-The begin of the babylonian month. This is at sun-set, when the first thin

crescent of the Moon can be observed for the first time (after conjunction with

the Sun) above the western horizon.

THTHE PERFECT BABYLONIAN MONTH

The babylonians looked for the perfect thing. The ideal. This is well attested at least in their Sky Science. They had a perfect year and they had a perfect month. They had also a perfect heliacal calendar and each planet had its perfect heliacal cycle...1

Here we will talk briefly about the perfect babylonian month. It is important to recognize it and to know it. If a month was (is) perfect, then everything was (is) OK. If else- then... else... The babylonian month is a lunar month. It is actually one full heliacal cycle of the Moon. It starts with the first sighting of the New Crescent (NC) around sun-set.

TIME CYCLES & TIME FRACTALS in SUMERIA

It is accepted that the modern science discovered the fractals 1 in the end of the 20th century. In a way, though, the fractals were known in Sumeria thousands of years ago. Hugo Winckler, the eminent assyriologist, historian and discoverer of the Hettite civilization, writes in 1901 a small book of 58 pages where he sums up the philosophical system of ancient Mesopotamia 2. On page 11 Winckler has an insight that in fact tells the essence of all super-modern chaos and fractal theories... "So, every separate part of the Creation appears as a copy of the bigger Whole (das Ganze). It is structured according to the same basic laws and in it are embodied and at play the same divine powers... The system (the philosophical system of ancient Mesopotamia) ergo, is in (the conviction) that the same processes (Erscheinungen), the same laws and powers are to be found in all different parts and parts of parts and that every separate part of the Universe is a mirror-image of the other (parts) and of the whole."

1: A definition of a 'fractal' is: A physical object where a common structural model is being repeated at different levels (of magnification). The snow-flake, the broccoli and the tree are among the most evident fractals. A snow-flake consists of many small snow-flakes. And each of these small snow-flakes consists, in turn, of many even smaller snow-flakes. This repeats on 3 or more levels.2: Winckler Hugo, ‘Himmels und Weltenbild der Babylonier als Grundlage der Weltanschaung und Mythologie aller Voelker’ Leipzig, 1901 Winckler was one of the pan-Babylonians.

a TRUTH AND DELUSION aTRUTH AND DELUSION

PART III

THE ATTACK OF THE JESUITS

In the previous, volume third of this track (Babylonian Sky Observer vol. 3), we talked about the very important question of the Motive or Why the modern Assyriology does everything possible to falsify the history of Mesopotamia. Then we continued with the pan-Babylonians and described their reconstruction of the prehistoric mystical philosophy of Sumeria. This is exactly what the modern Minimalism wants desperately to hide. The best thing to do if you want to hide something is simply to 'proove' that this something, in fact, does not exist (and have never existed) ! And this is exactly what did the enemies of the Truth about Mesopotamia. Here we will examine the attack on the pan-Babylonians that came from a source easily guessed... The pan-Babylonians came not only to defend Delitzsch, but also to reconstruct the mystical belief system of ancient Mesopotamia. Some of them even believed that this was the first revelation given by God to Adam, what they called 'Das Ur-Offenbarung' (The First Revelation)... And again, Germany was boiling ! Priests, rabbins, scholars and just everyone took as their duty before 'Got und Vaterland' to go on a crusade against the apostates. The bookshops, the journals, the newspapers were inundated with popular books, pamphlets and articles. Thousands of lecturers lectured everywhere and in front of everyone proclaiming the tenets of the pan-Babylonians for a fantasy. A heavy argument exploded in these recent years over the age and na-ture of the babylonian culture. The pan-Babylonians are attacked and declared for outlaws with a passion bordering on fanaticism.” 1
