Dear Friends:For some Jews, Judaism is, or at least should be, exclusively about spiritual matters. Our religion must address each person’s inner life, our existential questions and fears, and our striving to live with fidelity to Torah. Above all, practicing Judaism should facilitate a meaningful relationship with God, communing with the

Divine through worship, celebration of Shabbat and holy days, and devotion at home.

For other Jews, Judaism is, or at least should be, exclusively addressed at the world around us. Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, is the overarching mandate of Jewish faith. While each of us will have a different cause – some focusing more on the Jewish people and others turned outward, some pinpointing local needs while others seek to redress injustice nationally and internationally – we must all bring the teaching of Torah to bear on the world around us.

The truth, of course, is more profound: Judaism addresses our inner lives, not only to bring us into communion with God, important as that is, but also to inspire us to be God’s partners in creation by repairing the world. In August and December, we are scheduled to welcome two guest rabbis, one to focus on our spiritual lives and the other to challenge us to change the world. First, my classmate, Rabbi Debra Robbins of Temple Emanu-El in Dallas, will share her new book, Opening Your Heart with Psalm 27, a spiritual guide for each day from the first day of Elul, the month preceding Rosh Hashanah, and continuing through the cycle of our fall holidays, concluding on Atzeret-Simchat Torah. Then, three months hence, Rabbi Rachel Grant Meyer of HIAS will share her work, serving and advocating on behalf of immigrants and refugees. (Rabbi Grant Meyer may be known to many here, having grown up at Touro Synagogue in New Orleans and Jacobs Camp.)

The order in which we shall hear these two messages is not accidental. Some of us are apt to jump directly into tikkun olam without first addressing our own souls, thereby failing to correct our own weaknesses that can derail our social justice work. Others need the spiritual examination in order to find the generosity, the righteousness, and the enthusiasm to embark on repairing the world at all.

The Month of Elul a B'nai Israel Congregational Project

As we begin the prelude to the High Holy day season, we begin with the introspective month of Elul. This Hebrew month that precedes Tishri, the month of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, allows us the time and space to reflect on who we are, where we have been for this past year and where we are headed into the new year of 5780.

We return to the commitment of our core values and make amends to those whom we have hurt, knowingly or unknowingly; and focus our next moves to make improvements for ourselves, toward others, and for the world.

THIS YEAR, PARTICPATE IN AN ELUL, SELICHOT, NEW YEAR’S DISPLAY OF OUR 5780 RESOLUTIONS, HOPES, PROMISES – AND EVEN DREAMS.

As you enter the Temple this High Holy day season from September 1 – October 9, write on a provided pennant shaped piece to be displayed in our B’nai Israel continuum. It’s anonymous so no worries.

Share something you plan to make a commitment to this year – a promise to yourself, a resolution, an apology, whatever moves you. We will visually be able to see how we ALL can reflect and move forward as a community into a new – healthy, prosperous, exciting, and positive New Year of 5780.

HIGH HOLIDAY GIFT CARD DRIVE TO HELP THOSE AT RISK

In lieu of The High Holiday Food Drive, please support any or all these worthy organizations who feed those in need or at risk. GIFT CARD collection boxes will be set up in the lobby – drop one card or many this season of renewal. Gift cards can be of any amount (please write

the denomination on the card)

LUCIE’S PLACE has one mission: To ensure lifelong acceptance, stability, and success for LGBTQ young adults experiencing homelessness in Central Arkansas. Only with your support, we’re able to provide three essential services for our members, ages 18-25: safe living environments, job training, and counseling services.

Each year since its opening in 2015, 50-70 LGBTQ young adults receive life-saving services and support at our drop-in center in the heart of downtown Little Rock. Lucie's Place owns a home with 8 beds, specifically for LGBTQ young adults who need a place to stay! Residents can take advantage of a safe, affirming home with full living expenses covered while we support them in developing skills for future independence.

THE VAN serves those in need by going to the people. We visit current homeless camps, search for new camps, comb alleyways, check under bridges, and seek out people deep in the woods, etc. We take supplies such as food, water, clothing and hygiene products to people where they are. The One, Inc. seeks to build relationships with members of the homeless community so that we may then identify barriers to obtaining income and housing, and help our friends move beyond their homelessness. We are dedicated to being relational, as opposed to programmatic.

HOPE RISES provides holistic services to women impacted by addiction, trauma or incarceration to improve their health and well-being and provide opportunities for personal growth and empowerment.

OUR HOUSE focuses on long term solutions to homelessness is to not only to serve those who are homeless, but also to give extended support to former residents and those in danger of becoming homeless. In 2012 we created the Central Arkansas Family Stability Institute or CAFSI program to provide comprehensive support and services to help families avoid homelessness. CAFSI focuses on empowering clients in five key areas: Housing Stability, Financial Stability, Employment Stability, Educational Stability, Mental Wellness.

Potluck is food rescue for Arkansas.OUR MISSION IS SIMPLE: Save good food from being wasted and use it to feed hungry people. Potluck rescues millions of pounds of a wide variety of healthy food that would otherwise be thrown away, saving it for those who need it the most. Rescued food is distributed free of charge to a large and growing network of nonprofit community food programs. Potluck is proof that the smart idea of food rescue can be transformed into a fully-functioning and efficient operation that helps feed Arkansans in need.

President's Message THE TEMPLE CHRONICLE AUGUST 2019VOLUME 19 ISSUE 6 PAGE 6

President's MessageCarol's remarks from the annual meeting

Thank you so much for attending Congregation B’nai Israel’s 152nd annual meeting. It is hard for me to believe that it has been a year since you entrusted me with the honor of being Temple President. The 2018-2019 year for our Temple has been exciting, busy, and challenging. I would like to give you a few, brief highlights.

The staff….wow. We have the most talented and dedicated professionals. Our Administrative Assistant, Keila, returned to us this year after leaving for five months and we could not be happier to have her back. She is smart, committed, and shows great attention to detail. We are so lucky to have her. I am pleased to report that we hired Brandon Groce last month as our part-time bookkeeper. Brandon works full-time downtown in accounting and lives in Conway. He comes by the Temple on Tuesdays and Thursdays after work. Brandon is already proving himself to be an invaluable member of the team. As you know, Eileen Hamilton is the Director of Administration, Education, and Youth Engagement…that’s a lot of hats! She is amazing on so many levels. Education and children are truly her passion. You can see the new life breathed into Religious School, thanks to Eileen, Rabbi Block, and all of the teachers and volunteers. Eileen has taken on the role of Administrator with such tenacity. When any of us ask Eileen for help she grabs her yellow pad and favorite sharpie without hesitation. I often refer to her as the “task master”. She loves a list! Eileen, you have been a lifesaver and I am so grateful to you for your hard work and your friendship. Rabbi Block has been great to work with, too. I believe we balance each other well and are able to encourage each other when necessary. I appreciate your advice and support and the fact that you really only give it when I ask.

We have accomplished quite a bit but realize there is a lot of work ahead. During the year we were able to settle the estate of Lilah Sewell Mulkey. The Mulkey bequest came as a huge surprise to all of us. A letter was sent to the Temple stating that CBI was the sole beneficiary of an estate that no one seemed to recall who Mr. and Mrs. Mulkey were. Eileen uncovered that Lilah Mulkey was a member briefly for a year or two in the 80’s. We formed a Committee for Bequests that consisted of Jack Grundfest, Chair, Steve Bauman, Leonard Hasson, Carmen Arick, and me. The Estate consisted of two real properties, a single-family in Cabot, and a multi-family in Hillcrest. There was also approximately $90,000 in cash. We were able to sell the two properties and as such, we deposited approximately $210,000 into Endowment and then created the Lilah Sewell Mulkey Sacred Music Fund with the other $155,000. The Will specifically mentioned a cantor so we felt this would best honor her wishes. This fund will support such items as our High Holiday Choir or other music-related and educational programs. I know you all join me in gratitude for this wonderful and surprising gift.

The Mulkey gift to endowment is projected to increase our available to distribute enough to make a significant contribution towards health insurance for our staff. Another critical piece to assisting CBI with providing health insurance to our employees is that Rabbi

Block offered to reduce his annual health care portion of his contract by $2000, as his commitment and contribution, to the bottom line. Rabbi Block came to me with this offer as part of a solution and I am most appreciative.

I mentioned our new bookkeeper and I have other exciting news regarding our financials. We are currently transitioning our Temple software from Chaverware to Rakefet. Rakefet will be less expensive and seems to have integrated several other pieces that will hopefully save time, money, and improve accuracy. Please be patient with us during this time as we are sure there will be a few hiccups along the way.

Another item of business before the Board was executing a new lease agreement between Ati Day and the Temple. Ati Day has had some struggles but they have worked hard and increased their numbers to a viable level. We are making every effort to support them the best we can while still making it sensible for all parties.

After the horrible massacre at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburg, the Board decided that it was in the best of interest of the congregation to provide security every Friday night during Shabbat services. We sent a message out to the congregation requesting donations to help cover this unbudgeted expense. Within a few weeks of this request, we had enough donations to fund added security from November through the end of May. What an incredible response! We also hosted a community memorial service and attendance was of historic proportion.

Thank you for continuing to support the transition from a dues structure to Gifts of the Heart that Carmen so successfully implemented during her Presidency. Your support, not only financial, but also of your time and talent, is integral to the continued successes at Congregation b’nai Israel; including educating our children, adult education and meaningful worship for all.

Finally, I would like to thank Eugene Kruptisky for heading up the HVAC project with the support Dave Grundfest, Scott Jordan, Richard Estelita and Shelly Barron. Eugene is going to give a report on the project and you will soon see what a huge project this was and it could not have gone better!

In conclusion, I want to thank the Executive Committee, the entire Board and all of you.

Carol P. Parham, President

Did you notice a new look on your statement?

We switched to Rakefet for our membership database, financial records, and billing statements. We spent the summer learning about and training with the Rakefet staff and switching over all our data. As with all new programs, we did our best to transfer all information smoothly, but please be patient as we work out the kinks. In the end, we believe this new program will add to our efficiency.

Judaism 101 Begins on August 29

Judaism 101 is our congregation’s course for those seeking comprehensive introductory learning about Judaism. Rabbi Block is the primary teacher for this program, which meets on Thursday evenings, 7-8:30pm. Special sessions are scheduled to be taught by Eileen Hamilton, Ellyn Polsky, and by Dorian Stuber and the Holocaust Scholars of Hendrix College. All are welcome to this program, conducted with the rigor of an undergraduate college course, but requiring no prior knowledge.

Judaism 101 students range from congregants who have been Jewish all their lives to non-Jews in relationships with Jews, from those converting to Judaism to those eager to be well prepared to raise Jewish children.

The course is free for Temple members, with a cost of $100 for all others. For both members and others, books cost $72 for the whole set. (Couples taking the course together pay only one tuition fee and are welcome to share a set of books.) For more information, please contact Rabbi Block. For registration, please contact Keila in the Temple office, 501-225-9700 or [email protected].

From the ArchivesThanks to Art Pfeifer for donating to our archives a large 90 year oldparchment document with hand calligraphy and bold hand signatures of the Temple board and Rabbi Sanders, honoring his grandfather, Temple president, Arthur Pfeifer.

Pirkei Avot 1:14

Rabbi Hillel used to say: If I am not for me, who will be for me? And when I am for myself alone, what am I? And if not now, then when?Often times we are counseled to say ‘no’. Do not take more than you can chew. You have to have limits, boundaries, and personal time. Do not over extend yourself! All of these warnings are obviously good for one’s health and psychological well-being. What else is good for one’s health is exercise, eating right, and giving of yourself to a worthy cause. Some people do not care for exercise…but most people have no objection to lending a hand. Yet, volunteerism at many organizations and around the country is down. What was once an obligation, temple participation has become one of those choices. It’s become easier to say ‘no’. Luckily at B’nai Israel, volunteerism is not dead. While some say it may have waned in recent years, in comparison to other congregations, B’nai Israel is heroic. From dinners, to office assistance, landscaping, memorials, board service, birthday and anniversary cards, building repairs and maintenance, music, music, and music; community outreach to even baking and setting tables…there is always someone around the Temple putting in their time and energy. Make a call for security sponsorship and the calendar gets filled up; ask for parents help at religious school, we have it covered. Extend the need for set up, delivering food or goods, or caring for local TSA employees, the congregation responds. Next time an opportunity arises, step forward. Be part of the behind the scenes cast that allows so many programs and activities happen at B’nai Israel. Ensure yourself the time to handle your own needs and family but give of yourself too – at your Temple. It will feel good. It will make others feel good. And your active participation to your Temple will make all the difference. It’s a true gift.

Last Watchman of Old Cairo by Michael David Lukas

Joseph, a literature student at Berkeley, is the son of a Jewish mother and a Muslim father. One day, a mysterious package ar-rives on his doorstep, pulling him into a mesmerizing adventure to uncover the tangled history that binds the two sides of his fam-ily. For generations, the men of the al-Raqb family have served as watchmen of the storied Ibn Ezra Synagogue in Old Cairo, built at the site where the infant Moses was taken from the Nile. Joseph learns of his ancestor Ali, a Muslim orphan who nearly a thousand years earlier was entrusted as the first watchman of the synagogue and became enchanted by its legendary—perhaps magical—Ezra Scroll. The story of Joseph’s family is entwined with that of the British twin sisters Agnes and Margaret, who in 1897 depart their hallowed Cambridge halls on a mission to rescue sacred texts that have begun to disappear from the synagogue.

Mazel TovOn June 14, 2019, our own Brian Rosenthal was sworn in as the Arkansas Bar Association’s 122nd President at the Association’s annual meeting in Hot Springs. Brian is a partner at the Rose Law Firm where he practices commercial, real estate and environmental law. Brian is the second member of our Congregation and the second Jew to hold this esteemed position. The first was Jacob Trieber (1853-1927), who was president of the Arkansas Bar Association in 1914-1915. Brian is a native of Carthage, Missouri. He was confirmed at the United Hebrew Congregation in Joplin, Missouri. Brian earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (accounting) with high honors from the University of Arkansas, where he played trumpet in the Razorback Marching Band. He received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Missouri, where he was a member of the Law Review and graduated cum laude. Today, Brian continues his Jewish education as a member of our adult Hebrew class.

Spirited New Yorker Linda Voss (Melanie Griffith) goes to work for international lawyer and secret Office of Strategic Services operative Ed Leland (Michael Douglas) just before World War II. As they fall in love, the United States enters the fight against Hitler, and Linda volunteers to work for Ed spying undercover behind Nazi lines. Assigned to uncover information about a German bomb, Linda, who is Jewish, also has personal motives to fulfill: discovering the fate of her Jewish family members in Berlin.

LEAVE A LEGACY CONGREGATION B’NAI ISRAEL

Coming Soon!

We’re counting down to September 29th when we’ll unveil a permanent display of Legacy Society members’ names at the gala reception after Rosh Hashanah evening services. This creative installation, designed by our own Richard Estelita, is our way of acknowledging those who have committed legacy gifts to sustain our congregation into the future.

In order to ensure your name is added by Rosh Hashanah, your legacy commitment must be received by September 1, 2019.

For more information about becoming a legacy donor, leave your name with the Temple office (225-9700) and a volunteer will contact you. Planned gifts may include any deferred commitment. No gift is too small and every gift is a testament to your Jewish heritage.

Toda Rabah THE TEMPLE CHRONICLE / OCTOBER 2013VOLUME 13 ISSUE 9 PAGE 3

TODA RABAHMany thanks to our September volunteers:

September was an extremely busy month at Temple and there are lots of people to thank for their contributions of time and talent.  Our amazing volunteers are incredible!   Thank you to Debbie Diner for making the High Holiday gift bags of apples and honey that Rabbi Block presented to grieving families on behalf of the Caring and Sharing committee.   Kathy Grundfest, Kennon Goldsholl, and Toni Block--thank you for sending our congregation’s college students a Rosh Hashanah care package with challah and other holiday treats!   Thank you Meg Marion for making and delivering the High Holiday gift bags with homemade challah, honey and apples to our new and potential members.  Thank you Ricard Estelita for the beautiful Bimah flowers on the High Holy Days.  They complimented and enhanced our surroundings in the Sanctuary.  Kirsta Nigro and the ladies of Sisterhood- we are all so grateful for the beautiful Erev Rosh Hashanah Oneg.  It gets bigger and better every year!  Thank you to the Men’s Club for all of your work during the Holy Days.   From the ushers Philip Axelroth, Bernie Bevill, Van Gates, Bill Jacobson, Glenn Block, Annabelle Tuck, Steve Bauman, Mac Lyons, Micky Simon, Marla Shivers, Jerry Jacobson, Leon Marks, Rich Lewis, Sam Nickol,  and Robert Navra to the Break the Fast co-ordinated by Neil Elenzweig with lots of help from Glenn Block, Rita Fagan, and Bernie Bevill to the building of the Sukkah by Glenn Block, Al Hendrix, Steve Weinberg, Barry Goldman, Joshua Jacobi, Rich Lewis, Bernie Bevill, Dave Polner, Monty Fein, Phil Axelroth, Matthew Lopas, Martin Ferguson and grill master Neil Elenzweig you all did so much for our congregation!   Shelly Baron, Eugene Krupitsky, Jonathon Dranoff, Hannah Blackburn Parish and LaFTY-  thank you so much for leading and providing music for the wonderful children’s High Holy Day services.   Merrick Fagan thank you so very much for performing the sacred mitzvah of blowing the shofar during our High Holy Day services.   We are all grateful for your talent and your lungs.  Jeff Neuhauser and Terri Moore, thank you

FROM THE EDUCATOREileen Hamilton

Pirkei Avot 2:16Rabbi Tarfon used to say: It is not your responsibility to finish the work,

but neither are you free to desist from it.

This summer, I worked on a new religious school curriculum. One that would appeal to our students and teachers, use good resources and materials published by Jewish publishing houses, and add an essence of creativity and ingenuity to our classes. I wish there was one excellent curriculum out there for all religious schools to use; yet each congregation and school has a unique culture that requires a unique course of study. I needed to take parts of many resources to create what is most important for our students to know, to learn, and to enjoy. It’s not easy – and there is no one right answer. For over 20 years, I have been striving to create a perfect religious school. One where all are pleased and sated, the curriculum was interesting to all students, and all teachers create the most wonderful and perfect lesson plans. It’s like finding the ‘silver bullet’ or more like finding a needle in a haystack. Perfect doesn’t exist in a supplementary religious school setting, much to my dismay. And yet, year after year, conference after conference, article after article, I am still searching. And I will continue to do so. I may never finish the task, but I will continue to look.

The goals are simple: organize lessons that teach and perpetuate Jewish values, vocabulary, and important lessons that are applicable in the temple and in every day Jewish life. Introduce and exposure to Hebrew and liturgy to create a comfort in worship. Create joyous and meaningful holiday celebrations and observances as a whole school community. Create opportunity for parent and multi-generational learning. Engage in hands on projects and create ritual items for real time use. Strengthen relationships between all learners. There are many facets to a religious school program – it’s simple and yet complicated all at the same time. I am committed to searching for the answers, and no desisting from the task. What about you? We need to your support and help as we continue to work towards our future, our curriculum, and our mission to educate our next generation of Jewish leaders. I hope you will learn alongside of your children this year and see our new lessons unfold.

For Hannah’s mitzvah project, Hannah and her dog Rocky went through a rigorous course and had to pass two tests together. Hannah was able to get Rocky certified by the American Kennel Club as a good Citizen Canine and registered him with Therapy Dogs International. She and Rocky have volunteered in the community in locations with those in need of comfort.

LAFTY is back from summer vacation! This month our board will be meeting to learn about what it means to be on a youth group board, why successful teen leadership is important, and how to promote our NFTY community. Our board will also start to lay the foundations for NFTY-Southern’s Winter Conclave Feb. 7-9 2020 in Little Rock! Along with beginning the process of hosting a regional event, LAFTY board will also be planning many of the local events and meetings that will take place during the year.
