STRINDBERG BACK IN ROME One of August Strindberg’s early plays is called In Rome (1870), a work full of romantic clichés about Italy as a source of artistic inspiration, where the commonplace situations are however treated with scintillating irony. On his first and only visit to the eternal city, in 1885, Strindberg provokingly boasted about succeeding in seeing “Rome in one day” – a mass of old ruins after all! As a matter of fact, Strindberg often questioned the meaning of art and artistic representation. It was probably also his dissatisfaction which led him to test the limits of artistic forms and genres, destabilise them, mix them, contaminate them with other sources of knowledge, and creatively experiment with them. In this way he became one of the major artists in Europe at the turn of the century and a forerunner of Modernism. In June 2014, the 19th edition of the International Strindberg Conference, entitled Strindberg Across Borders, will take place in Rome. The Conference will be hosted in Italy for the first time, gathering scholars from Europe and America to discuss a wide range of topics connected with the idea of border in Strindberg. The Conference invites its participants to consider, through different methods and approaches, forms of border crossing in the works of Strindberg as dramatist, prose writer, scholar, painter, critical observer of society, and controversial Swedish male of his time. Strindberg Across Borders also investigates aspects of reception, intertextuality, transnationality, canon, adaptation and translation: how Strindberg himself adapted inherited models to his own needs; how he defied and questioned the role of the national writer through a European perspective and bilingual writing in Swedish and French; how his life and personality have been interpreted and for what purposes; how his plays have been staged worldwide; how his literary works, both dramatic and non-dramatic, have in their turn been adapted and transformed, meeting different expressive forms and horizons of expectation.
