Dear Parents & Community,

Field Events Carnival

The Beecroft Zone Field Events Carnival will be held this Wednesday 14 August. Students participating in 800m, shot put, long jump and high jump will be competing. I wish them the very best of luck and look forward to seeing them all there tomorrow.

Roofing and Asphalting

The roofing and asphalting projects are finally drawing to a close. Our staff, students and community have displayed great resilience throughout these projects, moving classrooms, finding new places to play and rehearse where required.

I have to say that the results have very much been worth the wait, with the new roofs, gutters and entryways looking fantastic, and providing greatly improved weather proofing.

The trades that are still onsite are now in the stage of finalising their works and all remaining equipment will be progressively removed from the school site over the coming week or so.

Social Media and Technology Use outside of School

In our current day and age, technology and social media use have become the new norm. As educators and parents, it is important for us to support our children as they venture through a digital world.

I include an information sheet from the e-safety commissioner with this week’s newsletter. It includes tips and suggestions for students who are using their first mobile phones.

SCHOOL NEWS LIBRARY NEWS Tuesday Week 6: Book Character Parade. Theme: “Reading is my Super Power” On Tuesday of Week 6 - August 27th, there will be a ‘Book Character Costume Parade’. All students are asked to come to school dressed up as one of their favourite book characters for the day. Each class will parade around in the morning at 9:20am, so parents can watch and take photos. There is a theme of “Reading is my Super Power” although students may come dressed up as any book character they like.

There is no cost, judging or

competition, so there is no need to go to any great lengths or expense. It should be a fun day for the students to look forward to.

Tuesday Week 6: Author Visit – Yvette Poshoglian On Tuesday of Week 6, students will be visited by children’s author – Yvette Poshoglian. We will be looking at Yvette’s books in the library, leading up to her visit. CANTEEN NEWS

A massive Thank You to Carolyn Booty and Fiona Court who single-handedly cooked 650 sausages for the Open Day barbeque. Carolyn has once again gone above and beyond in her role as Canteen Manager to make the Sausage Sizzle a success and raise funds for our school. Thank you also to all the other amazing women who stepped forward to assist on Open Day. Without parents like you supporting school initiatives, the fabulous Epping North school community just wouldn’t exist as it does today.

In other canteen news, it was wonderful to see some of the school Dad’s put their hands up for the first ever Dad’s Day on canteen. Thank you to John Vaughan, Mark Rawson and John Wilkes. These trailblazing father’s busted traditional stereotypes by showing the kids that Dad’s really can do anything, making many servings of the popular and delicious chicken nachos for Meal of the Week. Wow. Well done guys.

If you would you like to volunteer for canteen but can’t due to changing work rosters, or other life commitments, you can still help. Be the first to step forward when the call goes out for volunteers at special school events. Not only will you be giving the regular volunteers a break, but you will be helping build the amazing school community that we are all so lucky to be a part of.

This fortnight’s fabulous volunteers are;

MODERN JAZZ & BOYS’ DANCE NEWS P&C DANCE Congratulations to our gorgeous year 2 girls who performed last week at the ENPS Open Day Assembly. The girls did a fantastic job showcasing our P&C Dance Program – and Miss Lauren was very proud of them. PAYMENTS If you were unable to pay your dance fees via Flexischools, a reminder to check your email for your invoice. Payment is due immediately. Please action this quickly to secure your child’s continued place in the dance program. We urge you to pay your semester two fees via Flexischools as soon as it’s available, as the separate invoicing has created a huge work load for our busy treasurer. We appreciate your assistance. IMPORTANT DATES Saturday 26 October - ENPS Fair (please put this date in your diary - all dance groups will perform).

Thursday 14 November - School Dance Concert @ Epping Boys’ High School – More information early Term 4.

All dance participants are expected to perform at both the ENPS Fair and end of year concert, so please ensure you’ve blocked the dates in your diary as it’s a busy time of year for everyone. If you have an unavoidable clash, please urgently email: [email protected] so dances can be modified. PARENT SUPERVISION DUTY Please check the parent supervision roster (later in the newsletter) for supervision duty. If you can’t attend on your rostered date, please organise another parent to fill in for you. If you are on parent supervision duty please ensure you arrive to class no later than 7.55am. Recently one class was forced to sit and wait almost 20 minutes for the parent supervisor to arrive. This is not acceptable – and in future the teachers have been advised to take the students to the COLA and advise the school office. This is unfair on the children and disappointing for parents paying for their child’s participation in the program – however class cannot go ahead without a parent supervisor. You’ll find the full roster for term 3 later in this newsletter. Regards P&C Dance Committee

Children often have access to devices, including smartphones, from a very young age. Whether it’s watching their favourite program through streaming services on your phone, using educational apps or simply viewing photos with you and the family, they are engaging with devices in one form or another.

But when is my child old enough to be given their own mobile phone?

In 2012, the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed children as young as five years old owned a mobile phone – two percent of children aged between five and eight years old, and 29 percent for children aged five to 14 years. This figure is likely to be higher now!

For many parents and carers, five years old would seem too young. For others, it might offer them peace of mind and security to know they can keep in touch with their child—especially in an emergency.

The right age for your child will depend on their level of maturity. It’s worth asking yourself the following questions before handing over a digital device.

For younger children it’s best to start with a mobile phone without internet access, and introduce a smartphone when they demonstrate an appropriate level of maturity. Some younger children might argue that they are ready for a smartphone, especially if their friends already have one. But it’s worth holding out until you feel confident that your child is mature enough.

My child has their first smartphone – now what?

When your child receives their first smartphone it’s a great opportunity to instil safe online behaviours early on, so they can carry these skills through to their teens and beyond.

Here are some tips for getting them on board with good online habits.

Establish rules at the outset with clear boundaries

Talk about expectations and the consequences for not meeting these rules. Depending on the age of your child, you might want to set up a written signed agreement which lists the rules.

Here are some you may want to agree on:

• No phones after a certain time (i.e. 8.00 pm) – unless in an emergency.

• Keep to daily screen time limits (i.e. 1 hour per school night).

• Family time is a no-phone zone (i.e. dinner).

Your child’s first smartphone – are they old enough?

• Does my child have a good sense of responsibility?

• Are they able to stick to the rules?

• Do they show a good understanding of actions and consequences?

• Do they come to me or another trusted adult when they are distressed or encounter problems?

Page 13: Term 3 Week 4 Tuesday, 13 August, 2019 PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE … · 2019-10-12 · 1 Term 3 - Week 4 Tuesday, 13 August, 2019 DIARY DATES Week 4 Tues 13 August St 1 School House excursion

esafety.gov.au/parents

• Do not share your passwords with others – apart from parents.

• Do not share your real name (or full name), age and address when posting, talking to strangers or on sites where anyone can see it.

• Be kind to people – treat people on the phone as you would face-to-face.

• Do not take or share photos of others (including friends) without their permission.

• Tell a parent or another trusted adult if anything makes you feel uncomfortable, or if a stranger contacts you online.

• Do not purchase or download an app or game without talking to a parent first—especially as these often have minimum age requirements.

Use technology tools to help set the boundaries to keep your child safe

Use parental controls to help manage your child’s device and the types of content they can access. Most devices come with parental controls and offer a range of features:

• iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Restrictions. Here you can disable apps or features, prevent access to explicit content and specific webpages.

• Android (Google Play): Go to Play Store > Settings > Parental controls. Most Android phones use Google Play as the digital marketplace for purchasing apps and accessing content. Through Google Play you can restrict the content your child can download or purchase from Google Play.

• Google’s Family Link is an app for parents to help manage their child’s device and account and offers additional layers of protection. It enables parents to set screen time limits, review app permissions (such as their camera, location, contacts), block apps and approve downloads, block sites and filter content.

• You can also check with your mobile service provider if they offer any parental control tools.

Activate any privacy settings and safety features available on the device, in web browsers and apps. In some cases you can do this through parental controls or when installing apps on their phone. Carefully consider permissions and whether apps really need to access your child’s location, contact list, messages and other features.

Help your child set up a pin or password to lock their phone. In addition to protecting their personal information, this will ensure that no one else can use their phone.

Help your child set up strong and unique passwords for their apps and websites. Even if the phone is locked, apps and websites can be accessed from other devices.

Communicate openly with your child, establish and maintain trust

Most importantly, communicate openly with your child about their phone and online use. It’s not possible to supervise your child 24/7 and no technology tool is 100 percent effective in protecting them from online risks. So it’s really important to establish and maintain trust.

• Talk openly and regularly with your child about their online activities. Show them that you are interested in how they connect with friends, who they talk with and the type of sites they visit.

• If you are using parental controls, be upfront about this and get them on board. Let them know that these can be reviewed and changed as they get older and they continue to demonstrate responsible behaviour.

• Talk about positive online behaviour and about respecting others online. Encourage your child to think carefully before they post, text or share comments or photos so they don’t hurt or upset others. Remind them there is a real person at the end of the screen.

• Encourage your child to come to you (or another trusted adult) if they are upset because of an online experience, even if they think they are to blame.
