news

Did you ever get a school prize?

Well I have to confess that I never

did, and some of you won’t be at all

surprised! But one good school

mark that I did get was for Latin. It

has probably stuck in my mind

because the only Latin I every

remember learning was actually

something rude. So I was amazed

as much as anything else. The

good mark was really because I

produced (in English) a newspaper

front page about something to do

with the Romans, no Latin language

skills came in to it. Probably just as

well!!

So back to the Latin phrase

“Tempus Fugit” which is usually

translated as “Time Flies.” In actual

fact the phrase first appears as

“Fugit inreparabi le tempus”

meaning “It escapes, irretrievable

time.” Once it has gone it has

gone, irretrievably and forever.

Another year has passed, never to

be recovered. A new one has

begun but that too will soon be

gone. What will make one year or

one day or one minute stand out,

will be what we do with it.

While we wait for God to send a

new minister, how will you use your

time? Some will pass while we

sleep, God’s refreshment for us.

But in our waking moments will time

pass (tempus fugit) as we seek to

do everything we do to the glory of

God? May we be mindful of each

other, our family, the church family

and the community in which God

has placed us. May we always be a

beacon that points to God. We are

called to serve and that means a

servant heart. What do you want

from me, rather than, what do I

want from you!

“Be devoted to one another in

love. Honour one another above

yourselves.” Romans 12 v 9

That is the calling of all followers of

God and sadly one that the

Israelites so often lost sight of. Let

us make sure we are not like that.

So to end with a little more Latin

“Carpe Diem”. It means seize the

day. It won’t come again.

The Month of Prayer January 2017

We want to encourage everyone at

Elim Ryedale Church to share with

the Leadership in prayer times

during the month of January.

This is a really important time for the

church and sharing in united prayer

as a body each day throughout the

month of January will:

Open our hearts ... to grasp what

God is doing among us

Open our ears ... to hear the voice

of the Holy Spirit

Open eyes ... to see evidence of

Him guiding us,

increasing our faith, hope and love

for Him and His direction for us as a

local church.

Prayer leaflets are available from

church on a Sunday morning or from

Hope Central office.

As well as daily personal prayer we

will be coming together as a church

on a weekly basis. Coffee House

Church, for the month of January,

will also be prayer focussed.

El im Ryeda le

Church believe

that every single

person has the

ability to make a

difference and that

we are designed

for a purpose. As

such, the groups

are not meant to replace regular

Sunday attendance but are aimed to

maximise that purpose in every

person’s life.

Can I encourage you to keep

attending your Discipleship Groups

or if you are not in a group yet to

speak with me and I can arrange for

you to join a group that will suit you.

Even if you have been with the

church for some time and have

never thought it was for you or if you

once were part of a group and are no

longer so, please, let me encourage

you to join in again.

Together we will grow stronger ...

God is going to do amazing things at

Elim Ryedale Church!!

bonds and friendships which will be

lasting and strong.

It’s very important that we are

adaptable because we are seeking

God for growth not just spiritually

but numerically and as new people

join Elim Ryedale Church we will

need a good foundation of

Discipleship Groups in which to fit

them.

I am currently looking at some new

material for study and have taken

on board what the group leaders

have fed back to me. Over the last

couple of years, the study has been

formulated so that people can seek

God for themselves and hear His

voice, rather than being ‘spoon fed’

by a group leader

All people who regularly attend Elim

Ryedale Church are welcome to

join a Discipleship Group.

During this interregnum period as

we await a new minister, I believe

the Discipleship Groups will play a

key role in helping to nurture and

grow the congregation. They are

not only a place to study and pray

together but there is a pastoral

element to the groups too. It’s a

place where people can feel that

they ‘belong’ and where friendships

grow, which encourages unity.

Over the last 12 months, the groups

have seen some changes and I

understand that has been difficult

for some but I trust that God has

settled hearts and allowed people

to grow together and form new

Although I heard it forty times over

the two weeks, Mary’s final line sent

a tingle down my spine every time I

heard it.

“This is God’s greatest gift. Jesus

the Christ.”

What more can I say?

Issue 107 : Page 6

If Doctor Who ever needs a new

companion I am right there at the

front of the queue. Having spent

two weeks travelling back 2000

years to the very first Christmas, I

think I have quite sufficient time

travel experience now to add to my

CV!

Last time I wrote I was looking

forward to being part of the

“Christmas Experience” run for

schools at Hope Central. I cannot

believe that it is now all over – all

the preparation, an intense two

weeks of activity and, sadly, the

deconstruction of the scenery. But

what an experience it has been!

It was so special to see how excited

the children were when they met

and spoke to Mary, Joseph, the

shepherd and the wise man. The

awe and wonder at seeing baby

Jesus in the stable was tangible.

And it wasn’t just the children who

were touched – many adults

commented on feeling emotional

and moved by the final scene.

“I can’t wait to see baby Jesus!”

said one girl, jiggling about outside

the stable.

“Can we go back and see the baby

again?” asked one child as we trav-

elled back to the future and Hope

Central.

One teacher even commented that

it had been the best school trip that

she had been on in over thirty years

of teaching.

What an honour it has been to be

part of such an amazing team that

has produced such a meaningful

and memorable experience for

HUNDREDS of children and sup-

porting adults this Christmas.

Every single member of the team

played such a vital role in bringing

the Christmas Story alive – from

script writing to set construction,

from prop gathering to acting and

from hospitality and working directly

with the children. God used every

single one of us!

Now, two years into life as a widow,

what can I say? God’s promises

ARE true!

He is a husband to the widow

His love never fails

He never leaves or forsakes me

He is my strength and song

He is simply everything He said He

would be and more real to me today

than ever!

So, as we step into 2017 we can be

confident that whatever lies ahead,

God has it covered. As part of Elim

Ryedale Church let us determine

to love each other more, cherish

our time together more, look out for

each other more. Keep on learning

and living all we already know of

God’s ways. Allow God to change

us and use us to show and tell

others about our wonderful Saviour.

Let us be the Body of Christ while

we can!

This song became my constant

prayer two years ago as I drove

over to Hull every day to visit my

husband, Mike, as he lay on life

support in hospital. Our family

watched, prayed and hoped for

thirty days as this vibrant man

became a shadow of his former self

until on 17th January 2015, God

took him ‘home’. We could all

honestly say God’s peace and His

presence was real, often tangible,

through all the pain, heartache and

sense of loss, released in no small

measure by the prayers of God’s

people. Thank you!!

Testimony By Grace Abbey

Jesus’ words to His followers over

2000 years ago were this in The

Amplified version of John 9 verse 4:

“We must work the works of Him who

sent Me and be busy with His

business while it is daylight. Night is

coming when no man can work”

His mandate hasn’t changed! Let us

love, work and be a witness to our

world while we can, to brighten the

corner where we are!

Have a happy, blessed and fruitful

2017!!

“Guide me Lord through the day

Guide me Lord, this I pray

Through all heartache, temptation and strife

Guide me Lord through the night

Guide me Lord by your sight

That Your will might be done in my life.”
