New Short Film Takes You on the Journey to Redefine the Kilogram

In an impressive act of cooperation, the

General Conference of Weights and Measures member states voted to adopt a new kilogram definition for the first time since instituting the international prototype kilogram, or IPK, in 1889. This was the culmination of the years-long effort to create greater constancy in mass measurement examined in “Everything Different, Nothing Changes: Redefinition of the SI Unit Kilogram,” a new short video by METTLER TOLEDO.

At a basic level, all standards including mass are now tied to fundamental natural constants. In the case of mass, the referenced value is the Planck constant, also known as the fundamental constant of quantum physics.

In the 20-minute piece, Christian Müller-Schöll, METTLER TOLEDO, Dr Richard Davis, BIPM, and other metrology experts including Dr Philippe Richard, METAS, explore the science behind the definition, as well as the nearly poetic way the definition was able to be proven. This combination of smart thinking and technological excellence has produced measurement accuracy that is accessible for all people in all places at all times.

Rare footage takes you inside areas normally reserved for only a few

metrology experts to witness everything from the highly technical Kibble balance used to calibrate reference artifacts to equipment used to create the enriched silicon sphere that was also part of the proof. These strong visuals help to make real the ongoing discussion around the kilogram – a discussion that can seem largely theoretical, especially to those accustomed to dealing with physical weights.

The new kilogram definition eliminates the need to rely on a physical object located in one place, providing a limitless and previously unimaginable access to mass-measurement accuracy. “We are pleased to have been part of the effort to make this new definition a reality,” says Mr Müller-Schöll.

Henry Howard Finance has helped family firm Jolly’s Drinks to find new

life. Changes to manufacturing processes and further product development in the face of multiple economic pressures were needed for new owners to come on board. Henry Howard Finance helped make that happen, and at the right time.

Jolly’s is a soft drinks manufacturer operating in the wholesale market – legislative issues surrounding sugary goods and single-use plastics, as well as changing consumer tastes, meant additional investment was required to move the company forward and fast.

Originally founded by the Jolly family in 1896, incoming Managing Director Cheryl Ingram knew a 2018 takeover could only succeed with further investment in factory facilities, equipment and existing product ranges. Financing the acquisition and investing in the business at the same time would only be possible with external support – and that’s where Henry Howard Finance came in.

Cheryl explained: “All these things were happening at the same time and we simply couldn’t have taken the business on without a significant amount of disposable income to hand. Henry Howard Finance supported us in gaining access to the capital we needed to acquire the company so that we could make our own investments directly into the business itself.

“We were impressed with the overall level of support provided by Henry Howard Finance compared to other lenders, which ultimately gave us the confidence we needed to take on a new business in current climate. We’ve already gone to market with some of our new flavours – attracting new custom, increasing headcount and our turnover in the process – as a result of the support we received.”

Matt Jones, Head of Asset Finance at Henry Howard Finance, said: “This is a great representation of the boost Henry Howard Finance can give small and medium sized business for the greater good of not just the company concerned, but also an entire industry and the wider UK economy.

“Supporting companies at the beginning of their business journey and building on these relationships to provide ongoing support and development throughout the life of that organisation is something of a specialism where Henry Howard is concerned.”

Hainbuch is offering users of its Mini Series, or the earlier

Toplus or Spanntop chucks, an innovation that is said to save time and money. The company’s Vario Part and Vario Quick end-stop systems have now been joined by a third variant – Vario Flex.

The pneumatic workpiece ejector pushes the workpiece from the chuck automatically. Its depth can be adjusted flexibly by means of a special retaining mechanism and it can be positioned in the machine exactly as required for the workpiece. This automated function increases process security and reduces cycle times.

The Vario Flex can also be used as a basic end-stop for coolant wash or air flush. The pneumatic spring is removed and a feed tube is attached. The optional workpiece-specific end-stop with holes for the wash and air-flush can then be mounted directly on this flexible interface.

Time can be saved using the standardised end-stops. Set-up times are reduced and the user always has the right end-stop ready to hand. Whether to use Vario Quick or Vario Part is just a matter of preference.

For precise, rigid clamping, Hainbuch recommends using the Vario Part system. It works on the same principle as a gauge block, and its height can be finely adjusted in 1mm steps with gauge discs. With an axial run-out of < 0.02mm at the part of the end-stop that touches the workpiece, Vario Part is suitable for machining finished parts.

The Vario Quick variant is intended for fast, flexible clamping. It has a precise, trapezoidal thread screw to allow the clamping length to be adjusted quickly. A half-turn is equivalent to an axial adjustment of 1mm. Hainbuch also offers end stop blanks for workpiece or front end stops.

Subsea Segment Company of the Month

Commitment to Excellence

Industrial Process News is delighted to announce as its Subsea Segment Company of the Month, Koso Kent Introl, for its continued innovation,

dedication and commitment to the development of the many industries it serves.

Since 1967, Koso Kent Introl (KKI) has been manufacturing globe and angle control valves, severe service control and choke valves, surface chokes and subsea control and choke valves, as well as offering aftermarket support, service, upgrade and fault diagnosis. Originally founded as Kent Introl Edward Singleton, the company was acquired by Nihon KOSO

in 2005. The acquisition has gifted the company the opportunity to seek out higher profile contracts, and extended its global reach as a manufacturer.

KKI has stuck to its values and has maintained a fully UK-based design and manufacturing facility, offering bespoke and specific control and choke valves for its customer’s needs. The company prides itself on consistently exceeding growing demands and process challenges. The extensive experience and knowledge that runs throughout the company gives KKI a notable advantage over similar companies producing choke valve technology, both in surface and subsea related solutions. The company now predominantly serves upstream and subsea segment from its UK facility, but still offer downstream, midstream, petrochemical, power and general chemical installations in support of its large installed rate.

KKI has recently invested in on site diagnostic equipment, offering end users the ability to analyse existing older valve

solutions along with their performance, easing the planning of service outages, upgrade opportunities or asset life. The strategies that KKI helps its customers formulate for extending their asset life comes from innovative combinations of various aftermarket services, this usually includes: a full inventory of current equipment and its length of service, diagnostics of current equipment if required to assess its performance, scheduled maintenance securing safe operation, and the supplying of spare or upgraded parts necessary. The company supplies most major oil and gas companies, including BP, Shell, Equinor, Exxon Mobil, as well as working with emerging energy companies like Cryasor, Inoes and Premier Oil. KKI also supplies major EPC companies and FSPO suppliers.

KKI’s products are backed by an unrivalled expertise and after sales service. With a client base stretching across some of the world’s most demanding industries, the consequences of the quality of product or service that KKI provides could potentially be disastrous, which is why the company places the utmost value on keeping a consistent quality throughout its products that goes above and beyond what could simply be expected.

As well as various valves, KKI offers a flexible and robust range of Valve Actuators that cover all the needs of control valve applications. Used extensively in onshore, offshore and power applications for years, the range has garnered a reputation for being dependable and easy to maintain. The high quality materials used to manufacture the products contribute to this. All Valve Actuators are produced in a BS/EN 9001 quality assured environment, which guarantees the customer that all applications are tested thoroughly, and

that all materials used throughout the manufacturing process can be traced.

The company plans on strengthening its support of subsea factories, and meeting greater depths, design pressures and the challenges that come with doing so. Now being part of the KOSO group will surely further the expansion of the company and the service and products that it will be able to offer. KKI will be attending the Offshore Europe Conference and Exhibition in Aberdeen from Tuesday 3rd to Friday 6th September this year. For more information on KKI, see the details below.

CHEMUK – where the UK’s chemical industries meet

At the recent ChemUK exhibition in Harrogate, Sierra

Instruments’ range of thermal mass flow meters became a focal point for visitors. The stand out feature being, the lifetime guarantee on our flow sensors, not offered by any other manufacturer.

Standard thermal mass flow meters require regular re-calibration, meaning the instrument would have to be returned to the factory due to drift in the calibration. The reason for the drift is the breaking down of the filler material surrounding the sensor, which is encased

in the thermal well. Sierra Instruments use a patented all metal design, so that no filler materials are required.

Many manufacturers offer an in-situ re-validation of their instruments, but don’t take into account the inherent sensor drift. Consequently, only Sierra Instruments offer a true, in-situ re-validation of their instruments. This innovation has enabled Sierra to push the boundaries of thermal mass flow meter design. Allowing us to provide gas, mass flow measurement with low-pressure drops, high turndowns and velocities to meet most applications.

A video detailing these innovations can found on our web site at https://www.sierrainstruments.com/library/videos/drysense

Should you wish to discuss a particular application, please contact our UK Sales Manager, Martin Rowe at [email protected] or call on 07752 799063

The complete spectrum of perfect temperature control

Currently, there are thousands of metres of above ground and underground pipes in the chemical

sector. When fitted as new, pipes are theoretically perfect. Made of dissipative earthenware material, flammable liquids such as solvents, pass down and any build-up of static is dissipated out of the pipe, removing the threat of explosion.

A major flaw has been present in repairing underground infrastructure for decades, threatening the personal safety and continued well-being of thousands of workers in many key industries, as well as massively increasing the threat of environmental and commercial risk. Traditional repair methods introduce the potential for explosion and spark into pipes, they are NOT BS60079-32 compliant because dissipative products are not used. The environmental risk may have been negated when any leak was stopped; however, an explosion risk was introduced.

Thanks to our patented 100% dissipative pipe repair product, CONDUCTORLINER – a true ‘World First’ – no dig pipe repairs in the chemical sector, have changed forever because CONDUCTORLINER is the first product in the world that conforms to HSE legislation and that is EN/BS60079-32 and DSEAR compliant. There is NO STATIC / SPARK THREAT in any pipes repaired using CONDUCTORLINER.

CONDUCTORLINER is unique, a World First, and the epitome of ground breaking British innovation.

CONDUCTORLINER Speaking at the inaugural ChemUK event

in Harrogate on 2 May, Defra’s Director of Environmental Quality, David Hill outlined the Government’s ambitious plans for the environment.

In his speech David set out what Defra is doing to transform environmental policy through its comprehensive programme of work aimed at delivering action to improve air quality, reduce plastic and food waste and improve resource efficiency.

All this is reflected in the first major Environment Bill in 20 years along with the wide-ranging Resources and Waste Strategy published in December 2018, the world-leading Clean Air Strategy and further work planned for an ambitious new Chemicals Strategy.

Our approach to all of these issues is, of course, underpinned by the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, published last year with the ambitious goal of leaving our planet to the next

generation in a better condition than we inherited it. Meeting that goal can’t be achieved in isolation, so we will continue working with like-minded countries across the world to share best practice and lead by example to improve environmental protection at a global level.

In tandem with this comprehensive domestic agenda we are continuing to develop our approach for safe and effective chemical regulation when we leave the EU, details of which can be found at: www.hse.gov.uk/euexitreach

Anton Paar recently exhibited at CHEM UK and would like to extend

their gratitude to the delegates and exhibitors alike, who took time to visit our stand and discuss their own individual challenges faced at their own process plants.

A common theme seemed to present itself during these discussions, this being ‘the difficulty to identify reliable

process instruments that accurately measure product viscosity, density and concentration’.

All of the engineers stressed how vitally important it is to them to measure these process parameters to ensure accurate mixing and blending of products, optimise residence time in a reactor or vessel to improve product consistency and quality. Equally important was the necessity to eliminate product waste, reduce energy to improve their bottom line.

I think most the visitors would agree – Anton Paar make a compelling case that the challenges the customers face would be overcome by applying Anton Paar Process Instruments. By doing so they would:

n Improve control of the manufacturing process.

n Improve quality of intermediate and end products

n Reduce / eliminate waste caused by “out of specification” product

n Reduce manufacturing time and increase throughput

n Eliminate the time, effort and costs associated with laboratory measurements.

Should you be interested in discussing your own challenges, please contact us.

HRS Heat Exchangers’ stand at CHEMUK 2019 in May showed the appetite for tough, dependable heat exchangers in the chemical processing industry.

There was particular interest in the HRS SI Series of double tubeplate

multi-tube heat exchangers, and the patented Unicus Series of scraped-surface heat exchangers which are able to deal with the most fouling of substrates.

Whether looking to process fine chemicals or treat complex waste streams, heat exchangers need to be as reliable as every other part of the process, which is one reason for using the toughest materials – such as stainless steel, Teflon and PEEK – and the most robust designs in their

construction. HRS’ heat exchangers are designed to be resistant to corrosion and fouling, while operating at a wide range of temperatures. We provide a large range of models for fine chemical processing and solvent recovery, petrochemical and waste treatment, as well as the cleaning and recovery of process water and waste streams.

With lots of visitor interest in double-tube and multi-tube designs as well, HRS Heat Exchangers have already confirmed their attendance at next year’s event which is scheduled for the 13th & 14th May 2020.

Chemical pumps can be used to transfer chemical from tank to tank or around your

facility. They are designed and manufactured specifically to ensure that they are robust and able to handle aggressive and corrosive liquids, sometimes at high temperatures and others in explosive proof areas. It is always important that the materials of construction are compatible with the specific chemical composition of the fluid being handled.

For example, some chemical transfer pumps are only required for the transfer or dosing of a less corrosive liquid such as a light acid. However, some chemicals are much more aggressive or hazardous and need to be built to stricter criteria. The accuracy of a chemical pump very much depends on the application at hand, for example they may be required to transfer large volumes or they may be a dosing pump required to dose very specific quantities.

Sera Prodos UK Ltd can select you the right solution with our wide range of transfer and dosing pumps from 0.04 l/hr to 51m3/hr.

Assentech is a leading supplier of equipment, consultancy and maintenance for the tank storage, fluid transfer and process safety

sectors, supplying diverse industries, such as oil and gas, aviation and defence, water utilities, chemical, and food and beverage.

The company was established in 2009 by Mr Cox, who having become disillusioned and disappointed by the performance of some of the industry’s biggest providers, decided to start Assentech with the sole focus on customers and products.

From a home office in 2009, it has since experienced significant year on year growth with staff employed from its purpose built offices and workshop facilities in the South West of England. Ewart Cox believes that Assentech’s success is down to being open, supportive and honest with our customers’ and focusing on the long-term relationship.

The company works closely with some of the biggest names in the chemical, pharmaceutical and oil industries and has helped businesses achieve substantial cost savings through improved operating efficiency.

Our ethos is to protect people and the environment,

so it’s all about recognising the risks and assisting clients in minimising the risks to operate safely.

Growth for Valve Safety Service Assentech Sales Ltd has been offering tank storage and process solutions to a range of blue-chip companies for 10 years. It has now launched Assentech Rapid Response and Service Limited which is a new in-demand service, providing inspection, calibration and maintenance of industrial breather valves.

Having spotted an important gap in the market – Tank breather vents or valves have historically been overlooked as critical safety assets. The recent increased focus on the environment and personnel safety has highlighted the need to follow a written scheme of examination on these assets. This includes functional leak testing which has been written into Standards since 2008.

Apart from proving good corporate governance,

shareholder influence is driving publicly listed companies to demonstrate ‘green policies’.

Most customers find that improving tank leak tightness brings many benefits and a payback resulting from a reduction in use of blanketing gas, preventing product contamination, odour abatement and reduced tank corrosion. This activity is also a low cost way of demonstrating continual improvement in management of tank farm emissions for ISO14001 compliance.

A soft seated breather valve will potentially lose its sealing efficiency after three years. It’s a vital element to the running of a safe and efficient plant, and that’s where the value of our maintenance regime kicks in.

As we understand the science behind a breather vent and have developed a comprehensive scheme

of examination incorporating a pre-test, leak and calibration testing to identify under-performing equipment.

Key stakeholders can sleep at night, knowing that they have minimised their risks of site downtime, emission loss, lawsuits, inflicted penalties and increased running costs.

‘We can now assist with specification and supply of tank venting equipment, dry break, couplers, loading arms, IFR’s and geodesic domes and with the addition of Assentech Rapid Response & Service Ltd we can assist in the full lifecycle management of all the equipment we supply’.

The service company also offers specialist mobile services to not only leak test and calibrate valves but also hose testing, inspecting and cleaning flame arrestors and servicing loading arms and couplers. We also undertake larger projects including supply and installation of floating suctions, internal floating roofs and geodesic domes.

CDR introduces the X-Line pumps: A cutting-edge solution designed for fluids with solid particles.

The introduction of solids handling magnetically driven centrifugal pumps is a very exciting

innovation to the chemical process pump industry. In 2015, a European chemical manufacturer issued us with a challenge: to create a pump able to withstand the presence of solids; suitable for heavy duty processes, safe, reliable with zero-vapour loss which magnetic drive pumps are renowned for.

From this, the first solids handling magnetic drive pump was born.

By removing the need for single or double mechanical seals and external flushing systems, this pump can truly give you an environmentally sound fluid handling solution in a reliable and efficient system. The pump has been designed and manufactured to allow liquids with suspended solids to recirculate without any detrimental consequences. The all-new impeller design

reduces axial thrust, redesigned bushes facilitate free circulation and the inclusion of RunSafe Silicon Carbide bearings reduce friction by almost 90%

As innovators in surfactant technologies Lankem are

embarking on a new and exciting phase for the business by the introduction of our Bio-based surfactants. Not often do we see new chemistries in the surfactant industry and many products that are commercially available have been in the marketplace for many years.

However, the new products based on our BioLoop technology offer the formulator greener chemistry whilst offering the same performance as synthetic counter-types; and in some areas especially as dispersing agents, vast improvements in performance can be observed.

Innovation is key to Lankem and the BioLoops offer something that modern industries require, and that’s greener chemistries. We have a range of products that offer

comparable performances against conventional types such as alcohol ethoxylates. Alcohol ethoxylates are used in a wide range of applications such as cleaning formulations but have limited green credentials and have irritancy issues which can result in an impact on labelling. The BioLoops have no irritancy and have excellent eco-profiling. Also with Palm based surfactants being a hot topic for all formulators at this moment, our BioLoops are based on ethical feedstocks such as soybean.

The new BioLoops are the first choice for companies that require green ethical products.

ChemUK 2019 was the first exhibition

that Suurmond UK had attended in some years. We had developed the feeling that shows where not well attended by people that had serious reasons for being there. There would always be more salespeople than engineers or buyers. So, when ChemUK was brought to our attention we decided to dip our toes back into the exhibition game. We had been waiting for a dedicated, industrial chemicals, showcase.

On reflection we are very happy. Initially the team at UK Industry Events, the organisers of ChemUK, where very strong with social media, allowing us lots of opportunity to start getting our message out early. At the show we were very pleasantly surprised by the numbers of visitors, especially on the first morning; clearly others felt the same as us about needing an industrial chemicals exhibition. The ‘quality’ of the visitors was good, there were lots of engineers and buyers there that were there for a reason. They provided us with opportunities that we might not have got by any other route.

After the show we followed up with the leads we generated and expect orders shortly that will more than cover the cost of the 2019 event and partially pay for 2020.

Instrumentation, Testing & Analysis Exhibition Review Top 10

The study of sound generation and noise has become extremely

important in recent years as the general public has become increasingly sound conscious. Coupled with increasing legislative pressure for quieter, more efficient vehicles, the need for automotive manufacturers to make adjustments to the acoustics of their products is higher than ever.

In acoustics analysis, a free-field measurement room offers an economic and, more importantly, space-saving solution. These facilities provide an environment free of structurally transmitted noise and vibration. There are typically two types of free- field room design that are used. Absorption is usually either in the form of anechoic wedges or a flat panel system. In either case, the absorptive material used is tuned to match or improve the desired cut-off frequency of the chamber. Anechoic wedges maximize the surface area, which provides very high performance over a wide frequency range; flat panels can be finely tuned for certain frequencies, including low-frequency applications.

The Moduline acoustic construction panel system available from IAC has

been specially developed for acoustic testing facilities and is suitable for use with either flat absorption panels or anechoic wedges. The most important factor to consider when designing a free-field anechoic facility is the relationship between the volume of space in the room and the size of the test subject. Typically, the larger the room, the higher the absorption required in order to maintain a usable free-field measurement area. In addition to high-quality sound absorption, correctly specified measurement locations are essential at the design stage to ensure the accuracy of maximum allowable differences between the measured and theoretical levels set, according to the ISO 3745 standard. IAC Acoustics has 70 years’ experience in the design, manufacture and installation of both styles of facility and can provide technical advice on the best choice for individual requirements.

Industrial Process Technologies News

Lödige Process Technology presents industry-specific mixing technology and related processing

technologies for metallurgical applications at the Metec 2019 (Hall 4 / F23). Particularly ploughshare mixers – which are based on the mechanically generated fluid bed process patented by Lödige – are ideally suited to the manufacture of sinter material and ore mixtures.

One example at the booth (Hall 4 / F23) is the Lödige Ploughshare Mixer® FKM 600 with a drum volume of 600 litres: Specially designed for heavy and coarse, the mixer is outfitted with extremely wear-resistant materials. It has a removable inner rubber lining as wear protection for the cylindrical drum and for the head pieces. The Ploughshare mixing tools are

equipped with a hard metal welding made of tungsten carbide. In this way, a Vicker’s hardness of more than 3,000 is achieved, which leads to a considerable increase in service life.

Since heavy-duty applications often use products with difficult properties, for instance those which tend to set and harden, Lödige offers a divided mixing drum as an additional equipment option for the mixer. This permits easy access to the inside of the machine. Replacing shovels, shaft and rubber lining becomes much simpler and accordingly, can be carried out in no time.

Aeration&Mixing – microbubbles on

demand – A&M are expert in fine and ultra-fine bubble generation and distribute Japanese-made Nikuni KTM microbubble generating air/gas-mixing regenerative turbine pumps. Nikuni KTM pumps are used in aeration and DAF type separation in industrial waste water treatment plants and for the injection of gasses into liquids.

At least 2 million ultra-fine bubbles per cubic cm! These proven pumps deliver a fine bubble stream at diameters close to 25μm some of which will collapse to the ultra-fine (nano) level. KTM pumps are in use globally and available with flow capacities from 1m/hr³ to 50m³/hr. The key benefit of these pumps is that they only consume as little as 1/3rd of the energy consumed in comparative systems.

Installing a Nikuni KTM microbubble pump in aeration and DAF type separation systems can eliminate the need for compressors and blowers, in many cases, reduce

the energy consumption by up to 2/3rds. Payback can be from as little as one to five years, dependent upon the scale and duty cycle involved.

Nikuni KTM pumps are also used to effect a change of state by combining gasses with liquids. As an accomplished scientist and director, Roger has pioneered the use of technology to show compliance with environmental legislation throughout his career, and has been responsible for environmental projects and the establishment of environmental business in the UK.

Based in West London, OES operates around the world, offering its services wherever there is a need for a specialist solution. With an extensive history and a wealth of experience in environmental consultancy, OES is well placed to offer superior and successful solutions to a range of complex issues. “We bring the application of chemistry and a strong scientific ethos to everything we do; it might be more expensive, but we are usually

more successful than other companies who are less meticulous in their analysis,” explained Roger.

“We rely heavily on monitoring and the scientific data we have generated to draw conclusions, meaning we can assess the perceived problem, quantify it and look at possible solutions. Sometimes this involves changing practices, other times there might be a fuel change or we might provide information for capital expenditure to update the plant equipment. In other cases, we have

worked with clients to develop new methods or bring equipment to rapidly measure a parameter which indicates the problems, and then use this as a surrogate to show that the emission is reduced.

“We sometimes have to develop a whole new method to measure things, which is a unique capability for OES. We are dedicated to working closely with our clients; I really enjoy listening to their issues and finding a solution for them, it’s very much a team effort.”

With a demonstrated history of providing excellent services stretching back almost 20 years, OES is continuing develop, using a network of appropriate

associates where necessary to supplement their own resources and add extra expertise for specific projects. Indeed, OES is committed to helping their clients as much as possible, “We are always happy to advise on and discuss projects,” said Roger, “and if it isn’t something we can help with, we usually know someone who can.”

In addition to their environmental consultancy services, OES also offers bespoke training courses which are created specifically to cover Isokinetic Testing and Source Emission Testing. “These can be held worldwide or in the UK, and can be EU or US-EPA based as appropriate. Surface Finishing & Grinding News

Curtiss-Wright have a commendable history behind them, having been founded by three of the world’s most

celebrated aviation pioneers, Orville and Wilbur Wright and Mr. Glenn Curtiss, one of the forerunners of naval aviation. Their companies, the ‘Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company’ and ‘Wright Aeronautical Corporation’ merged in 1929 in order to create Curtiss-Wright. Today Curtiss-Wright is one of the world’s leading advanced engineering companies, having diversified and branched out into numerous different technologies across multiple sectors, including commercial and industrial, defence, power, metals, aerospace and much more.

At the turn of the 21st century, Curtiss-Wright had grown into a multi-national company, with global sales of over $2 billion and having acquired almost 60 businesses. Many of these companies still operate under their original name, such as Metal Improvement Company, Bolt’s Metallizing, IMR Test Labs, Component Coating and Repair Services and more who now are part of Curtiss-Wright Surface Technologies.

These various divisions offer a wide variety of different specialised surface treatments such as thermal spray coatings, solid film lubricants, shot peening technology and much more.

Curtiss Wright Surface Technology, one of their most well-known and international subsidiaries, specialises in providing material surface treatment solutions, focuses on enhancing the performance of critical materials and components. As many of their clients are in heavy engineering based industries, critical components are often of vital importance.

Not only do they need to be specially designed to precision specifications, but they need to be long lasting and properly maintained too. Curtiss Wright Surface Technology can offer clients a comprehensive material treatments service that covers silicone, plastic and electronic components, coatings, shot and laser peening, material analysis, testing, repair and maintenance.

Curtiss Wright Surface Technology can provide mechanical and metallurgical testing services for a range of different materials and components through IMR Test Labs. Curtiss-Wright Surface Technologies uses only the most advanced technology and methods in order to conduct fatigue testing, thermal spray coating analyses, metallurgical and failure analyses, accelerated weathering and corrosion testing, weld testing and much more.

When it comes to engineered coatings, Curtiss Wright Surface Technologies have a wide scope of services, including providing thermal management, corrosion and erosion, and protection and repair of turbine components. Curtiss-Wright Surface Technology can provide protective engineered coatings or metal

coatings to protect components from the environment, corrosion, heat, and wear.

As they can ensure protection for components of any size or complexity, they have a vast client base made up of those seeking their protective coating services, including the aerospace, oil, gas, automotive and medical industries. Their range of coating solutions includes thermal

spray/HVOF coatings, solid film lubricants, liquid coatings, and parylene conformal coatings. Metal and material surface solutions are a huge part of why Curtiss Wright Surface Technology has become such an internationally recognised name. In addition to their famous controlled shot peening process, the company can provide highly effective and controlled Laser Peening for components in turbine engines, aircraft structures, wing skins and more.

This specialist process puts exceptionally deep residual compressive stress in certain parts of a component to prevent crack initiation and fatigue. Not only does this allow the component to resist damage from erosion, strike damage, fretting, and corrosion, but it can also better withstand pressure from both low cycle/high stress and high cycle/low stress situations. Better

yet, their laser peening ensures quality control, precise application and poses no risk of process contamination.

Preventing the failure of critical components is a huge concern for clients, and is one of the most highly sought after services from Curtiss Wright Surface Technologies. Problems can be caused due to any number of reasons throughout the component design process, whether it’s the choice of materials used, incorrect assembly, or damage to the parts caused by bending, rolling or forging.

Components of any type can be damaged, such as blade roots, rotating rings and tie wire holes used in Aero-Engines, fasteners and stringers used in Airframes, and torsion bars, gears and keyways, which are used to make Crankshafts and more.

Environmentally Considerate Lubricant Company of the Month

Automation Company of the Month

Industrial Process News is proud to announce as our Environmentally Considerate Lubricant Company of the Month, PANOLIN UK Ltd.

This year, PANOLIN AG celebrates its 70th birthday, and with it 70 years of incontrovertible success. Established by Bernard Laemmle in 1949, the company’s global headquarters is based in Zurich, Switzerland, however as an international specialist, PANOLIN’s reach stretches to a global market. The company is a producer and distributor of lubricants, used across multiple industries. PANOLIN also uniquely produces a range of Environmentally Considerate Lubricants (ECLs). Reaching the UK market for many years via a distributor, the PANOLIN UK subsidiary was established in 2016 and, reflecting stellar growth in that time, is now relocating to Leeds, West Yorkshire.

PANOLIN UK’s Paul Holland tells us “PANOLIN has ECLs firmly positioned as our core competence. The increasing awareness for pollution caused by many chemicals, including lubricants, promotes the use of environmentally considerate

products. There is a clear trend towards a more responsible use of lubricants and several legislations already limit the use in some applications. ECLs are readily biodegradable, and minimally toxic to the environment. Products conceived, formulated and manufactured by us serve global markets where demands for environmental protection are increasing continually. The aim of environmentally considerate PANOLIN

lubricants is to use machines and equipment in the most environmentally protective way possible and to do so with the highest technical performance and the best economy whether for hydraulics, engines, drives or transmissions – all meeting or exceeding up-to-date standards including biodegradability, bio-accumulation and aquatic toxicity. PANOLIN fully-saturated synthetic ester technology hydraulic fluid for example can even be considered as a ‘for life’ solution in some circumstances but in any circumstance can outperform and outlive other biodegradable and mineral-oil based fluids.”

PANOLIN products have gained global recognition for enhancing the performance of the machines to which they are applied, while minimising the cost to the customer. Many of the company’s products carry OEM approvals and the environmental certification that necessitates them being used on a wide range of applications within an equally broad range of circumstances. The company delivers to an extensive list of industries, all of which benefit greatly from

utilising PANOLIN’s products. From construction, mining and forestry to hydro-power, offshore, marine and subsea applications, PANOLIN’s lubricants assure reliability and asset utilisation with effective cost control. Notable mentions of machines lubricated with PANOLIN’s products are the London Eye, which has been filled with PANOLIN HLP SYNTH since 1999, the Panama Canal, with 170 units on its lock gates being filled with PANOLIN, and Mont Saint-Michel, which relies on a PANOLIN filled hydraulic dam to ensure that it remains an island.

PANOLIN HLP Synth and ATLANTIS ranges of hydraulic fluids encompass what can be made possible by simply embracing specialised oil technology. Securing superior performance, economic viability and environmental sustainability is

simultaneously achievable with PANOLIN. For example, the hydraulic system, which has (justly) had to adapt over recent years to an increasing technical and environmental demand, requires now a hydraulic fluid that goes beyond a generic specification. PANOLIN ECLs are designed specifically to achieve this, making them the ideal lubricant for such systems. Users are offered extended oil life expectancy through definitive resistance to mechanical, chemical and thermal stresses resulting in improved system protection and lower cost of ownership.

Despite already boasting an impressive line of lubricant technology, PANOLIN has no plans to halt product research and development. With demands for more innovative and sustainable lubricant solutions constantly increasing, the company is always thinking ahead. Introducing positive environmental changes to industries across the board is an aim nearly all companies of a similar nature to PANOLIN strive to achieve, however there are none that achieve it quite as effectively and efficiently as PANOLIN.

For more information on PANOLIN and its products, see the details listed below.

PANOLIN offers sustainable lubricants

Industrial Process News is pleased to announce as our Automation Company of the Month, Optimal Industrial Automation

Ltd. Established in 1986 by Martin Gadsby and Dave Richards, Optimal Industrial Automation Ltd is a leading provider of automation and control solutions for pharmaceutical, life sciences and energy industries, also providing products and services that serve food and drink, military, aerospace, pallet tracking, component tracking, automated inspection.

The company is a one stop shop for the entire life cycle of a project, and boasts extensive knowledge, experience and expertise on the design and implementation of a broad spectrum

of technology. Based in Yate, near Bristol, Optimal orchestrates all of its services from its state of the art purpose built facility, including consultancy, design and 24/7 support.

In early 2000, Optimal began developing a software package for PAT data management, followed closely by a software package for machine vision. As a result, synTQ and synTI were produced, the former of which has grown into a globally recognised PAT data management product and is available from Optimal Industrial Technologies. The synTQ range is designed to be vendor neutral, under the provision that the device with which the software is being integrated has a Protocol communications interface. Any process and control models that

have been developed on a synTQ product are directly transferable between synTQ models, as are orchestrations. This renders any work produced on a small scale system wholly compatible with full scale production systems.

SynTI, has been developed and created directly for the integration of disparate inspection systems and printing systems used on packaging lines which are commonly found in heavily regulated environments. More

often than not, batch/lot information is printed on a product or carton coupled with a bar code or a 2D code.

This frequently leads to the printed information needing to be verified, and the product on occasion needing to be weighed. SynTI has been designed to act as the network by which all the devices used to carry out these processes are connected. SynTI configures all of the equipment related to the product, collects the appropriate information and stores it in a data base. Subsequently, the information gathered can be printed on a report, or simply stored on the PC

used. SynTQ and synTI are but two examples of the long reaching arm of the Optimal Industrial Automation and Optimal Industrial Technologies product line and are as effective in serving their purposes as one can expect of a company of Optimal’s calibre. The companies adopt a customer focused work ethic, with after sales care and consultancy processes being built entirely around making things easier for the customer. It’s this attitude that keeps the company at the top of their game, and leading in its field. The company’s plans for the future are simple and clear cut: to continue to offer the highest quality automation and control solutions to its customers and to ensure that business expands.

Optimal will undoubtedly continue to develop and produce a wide selection of software and hardware solutions that adhere to the highest levels of reliability, efficiency and effectivity. For more information on Optimal, see the details below.

Facilities Management News

Water, Energy & Environment News

Public concern about the dangers of polluted water has never been more prominent and national campaigns have voiced public concerns

about the legitimate problem of depleting water supplies. In alignment with the wider issue, there is growing political will across the world to tackle water pollution of all kinds, and the dangers it poses to the environment and public health.

According to the 2030 Water Resources Group, the global demand for water will outstrip supply by 60% in just 11 years’ time, meaning businesses and consumers must begin to collaborate to tackle the problem.

Wastewaters discharged by industrial manufacturers pose a threat to the environment as various contaminants enter our waterways, react with one another and become even more complicated to remove. Effective wastewater treatment at the source of pollution can dramatically reduce the levels of these industrial contaminants, leaving water safe for discharge into the environment.

Water used in manufacturing processes in pharmaceutical, oil and gas, chemical and agricultural industries is often discharged to the sewer or environment rather than being reused. This has inadvertently created a demand for technology which

allows industries to effectively treat water, allowing it to be recycled for those same manufacturing processes or for other purposes around the business, including cleaning or irrigation.

By reusing water in a closed-loop system, rather than sourcing new mains water, businesses can help reduce the depletion of our finite water reserves. Against the backdrop of an increasingly concerned public, effective wastewater treatment can drastically improve a business’ sustainability along with improving their reputation.

Although water treatment offers one part of an overall solution to reducing the water gap, the process itself comes with drawbacks and limitations which require careful consideration.

Startlingly, many commonly used tertiary wastewater treatment processes such as Ozone with Hydrogen Peroxide or Fentons involve regular doses of chemicals to eradicate trace level compounds. These chemicals bring with them a unique set of environmental challenges.

‘Chemical dosing’ produces a toxic sludge as a secondary

waste which requires transportation, specialist treatment or disposal to landfill. Unsurprisingly this also comes at a high recurring price. This has created a demand for more economical and environmentally friendly solutions, as in most cases, these processes are not sustainable long-term options. Solutions now exist which allow contaminants to be selectively targeted without the creation of a toxic secondary waste.

Arvia’s Nyex™ solution combines adsorption with electrochemical oxidation to provide an alternative solution to treat water without chemical dosing. Chemical compounds are selectively targeted, adsorbed and oxidised, leaving the wastewater stream safe for discharge to the sewer or the environment.

When some of the most problematic organics are adsorbed onto the surface of a specific granular Nyex™ adsorbent and then exposed to a carefully regulated electrical current, electrochemical oxidation occurs, which simultaneously mineralises the organic contaminants and regenerates the adsorbent carbon media in-situ. By alleviating the need for chemical dosing and external media regeneration, businesses can reduce costs in

terms of transportation of chemicals and specialist waste disposal.

Conveniently, the system capable of effecting these changes can ‘bolt-on’ to or retrofit into a conventional treatment train, requiring minimal labour to commission and operate. Rather than treating the whole body of water, organisations can now be more selective, targeting the problematic compounds with smaller operating costs.

Ultimately, ensuring water quality for this and future generations will necessitate collaboration between governments, water companies, industry and water treatment providers. As analytical methods continue to develop, companies are turning to advanced tertiary processes capable of managing these now visible low and trace contaminants. This is necessary to not only achieve regulatory compliance but also to safeguard future business activities.

Tackling the water gap through wastewater treatment

Managing facilities can be a gruelling challenge, the orchestration of cleaning and security operations of

premises is often a time-consuming chore. There is an abundance of businesses that offer competent and efficient services to cover these tasks, however time and time again the service paid for doesn’t always live up to the standards of the one advertised. One company has spent the last 50 plus years dedicated to changing this. Since 1962 TC Facilities Management has been offering nationwide facility cleaning and security services that consistently exceed expectations.

TC Facilities Management adheres to a rigid code of conduct and distances itself from its adversaries by way of a unique approach to delivering its services. The company fuels its business with four

core values: respect, expertise, care and initiative. As opposed to simply providing a menu of available services for customers to choose from TC Facilities Management takes the time to sit down and listen to the specific needs of the customer. As a result of the patience and attentiveness

with which the company deals with its customers, the cleaning and security services TC Facilities Management delivers are able to meet the most inimitable of requirements.

The company offers a broad range of services that stretch to the needs of a wide range of sectors. The cleaning services TC Facilities Management provides are as seamlessly practical as they are effective and have over the years garnered nothing but customer satisfaction. Over the last six

months the company has been offering customers the opportunity to present feedback, in an effort to improve services and simultaneously show to customers quite how valuable their opinions are. The feedback that TC Facilities Management gathered was universally positive, with customers praising the company’s notable focus on offering solutions that work for the customer.

As well as generic cleaning and security services, TC Facilities Management offers a range of specialist services, all of which are delivered by a team of extensively trained and highly experienced staff. The services include window cleaning and abseiling cleaning, cladding cleaning, jet and pressure washing, builder and sparkle cleans, floor care and diamond polishing and upholstery cleaning. Currently the company is lending its upholstery cleaning services to the British Heart Foundation, providing a service that revamps second-hand furniture donated to the charity in order to maximise the profit that can be made from them for their ground breaking research into heart and circulatory conditions. The partnership that TC Facilities Management has maintained with the British Heart Foundation only strengthens the company’s already glistening reputation as being selfless in the development of the services it provides.

In the foreseeable future, TC Facilities Management plans on expanding in such a way as to underpin its values and produce a positive and professional

capacity for both its customers and its colleagues, of which there are nearly 5,000. Ensuring that all of TC Facilities Management’s stakeholders feel respected is something the company has always held as imperative to the sustenance of a healthy business, and subsequently has kept in the highest regard. The future can be described as nothing but bright for TC Facilities Management, and the company will undoubtedly continue to expand and satisfy customers nationally for years to come.

Three colleagues working for drainage and utility specialist

Lanes Group plc have each won national awards for their inspirational dedication to the health and safety of others. Jack Gale, Kelly Hansford, and Andy Brierley have won RoSPA Inspiration Awards which recognise the contribution that individuals make to occupational health and safety.

Lanes Group Director Andy Brierley, pictured centre, has won a RoSPA Distinguished Service Award, which is given to safety professionals or campaigners who make a sustained and long-term contribution to health and safety. All three colleagues work for Lanes Utilities, which is responsible for surveying, cleaning, unblocking and repairing drains, sewers and wet wells for Thames Water.

Jack Gale has been awarded the RoSPA Inspiration Pride Award which recognises ‘acts of heroism’ in a life-threatening situation, while campaigning for health and safety, or when selflessly helping others. The wastewater engineer, aged 22, saved the life of a one-year-old baby

boy who had stopped breathing. The lifeless child had been carried into the street by his distraught mother.

Jack, a former British Army battlefield medic, with experience in Afghanistan, took the correct emergency action needed to revive the baby, who made a full recovery.

Kelly Hansford is to receive the Influencer Inspiration Award, which recognises individuals who have made the biggest impact on health and safety in the previous 12 months. She is both a mental health practitioner and a trauma risk practitioner who works on a pioneering Lanes initiative to support the wellbeing of colleagues.

A wellbeing app monitors employee happiness and puts Kelly in touch with individuals who want help with any problems. At any one time she

is supporting around 40 colleagues with issues that include mental illness, personal debt and family disputes.

Lanes Utilities’ focus on health and safety has contributed to its accident frequency rate falling to zero at the end of 2018, the illness frequency rate falling by 30% and employment churn falling by 57%.

Lanes trio win RoSPA Awards for inspirational health and safety

A worker is lucky to be alive after surviving an Arc Flash at work.

Eddie Smith, 30, was working on site for construction firm, Clancy Docwra, when the jackhammer he was using to break ground hit a high voltage cable.

Despite meticulously completing all safety checks, contact with the cable caused an Arc Flash – an intense burst of energy that is four times hotter than the surface of the sun, louder than a gunshot, and can burn an operative’s skin within fractions of a second.

Although suffering burns to his hands, neck, mouth and nose, Eddie avoided life-changing injuries thanks to his clothing, as his employer had invested in specially-designed ProGARM Arc Flash protective clothing (PPE).

Now Eddie and Clancy Docwra have teamed up with ProGARM, Arc Flash protection specialists, to raise awareness of

the life-changing and often-fatal impact an Arc Flash can have.

Eddie said: “It was just a normal day – I arrived on site, unloaded and completed the safety checks Clancy Docwra insist upon before we can begin work. Myself and the team then started to break away tarmac. The ground underneath the tarmac was very hard, meaning we weren’t able to use shovels or grafters to break the ground. So I took the decision to use a jackhammer. Unfortunately as I was doing that, the jackhammer threw straight into the ground and hit a cable.

“When the jackhammer hit the cable, an Arc Flash occurred. I remember experiencing a lot of pain and awful thoughts running through my head. The main one was obviously about my little boy, but also my family, my job and my physical injuries. I had burns all over my hands, down my neck, inside my nose, inside my mouth, and around my face, but

because I was wearing my PPE, it didn’t touch my chest, legs or arms, so my body as a whole was completely fine.

“I never thought something like this would happen to me – I felt confident that I’d completed all safety checks so I was risk free. That’s why it’s vital to wear PPE. If I hadn’t had been wearing ProGARM PPE, it would’ve been a very different story. That equipment saved my life. It saved my little boy, friends and family from the loss of a loved one.”

Since the incident Eddie’s made a full recovery and is back at work. Eager to ensure others are aware of the importance of wearing quality PPE, Eddie and Clancy Docwra have teamed up with ProGARM, the PPE supplier that protected him from the Arc Flash, to promote safe practices for those at risk of such an incident.

Crowcon has developed an addressable fixed-point

gas detector with local display which offers both flammable and toxic gas detection and oxygen monitoring.

Crowcon’s Louise Early explains: “We originally developed the Xgard Bright specifically for China four years ago and due to its success, particularly in regard to its addressable functionality, we have now released Xgard Bright internationally.” The three-wire addressable implementation reduces cabling requirements, lowering the cost of installation. The large OLED display allows users to work with Xgard Bright during install, calibration and

routine maintenance without the need to open the housing.

Xgard Bright offers analogue 4-20mA and RS-485 Modbus signals as standard, along with an alarm and fault relay and optional HART communications. It is suited to both small and large installations using point-to-point or multi-drop methodologies. Target applications include oxygen depletion in laboratories (educational, medical and research), toxic and flammable gas monitoring across the automotive, steel, chemical, food and beverage industries.

Early concludes: “We have already achieved significant

success with Xgard Bright in China, across the waste water, gas distribution and construction industry and as a result, took the decision to extend our regional certifications, widening the suitability of this successful addressable gas detection solution”.

3M, the science-based technology

company, has added a 10” filter cartridge and housing (referred to collectively as a filter system) to its High Flow Filter System range, extending its capability to lower process flow applications, including modular water treatment systems and filling lines.

The new High Flow 10” Filter Cartridge from 3M uses the same proprietary high efficiency polypropylene microfibre filter media as the existing 40” and 60” length versions. The compound radial pleat structure and large diameter core offers the same significant advantages: high flow rates per filter cartridge in a compact design, allowing fast and easy filter change-outs.

The flow rate capability (up to 19.3m3/hr) and very compact footprint of the High Flow 10” Filter System from 3M also offers an ideal solution for upstream pre-filtration to membrane systems including, but not limited to, Liqui-Cel Membrane Contactors by 3M for gas exchange applications and standard reverse osmosis units, to help optimise membrane service life.

The key benefit of High Flow Filter Systems from 3M is their high filtration efficiency in a small footprint. This is mainly down to the large diameter, compound radial pleat design of the filter cartridge itself, which maximises surface area within each cartridge allowing for higher throughputs and increased service life.

3M manufactures a range of membrane connectors called Liqui-Cel Membrane Contactors by 3M, for degassing applications, predominantly CO2 and O2 removal from water or other liquid streams. Upstream pre-filtration of High Flow Filter Cartridges from 3M to a membrane contactor or reverse osmosis unit will help optimise the life of the membrane. The 3M High Flow Filter System range offers an ideal solution to reduce capital and operating expenditure due to its high flow capacity and compact footprint, especially in modular water treatment systems.

The High Flow 10” Filter System from 3M is available now.

Leading the frozen treats category with its use of

compostable plastic-free film, UK ice lolly producer LICKALIX is now applying low-cost thermal inkjet (TIJ) codes, text and graphics from Rotech to its premium, better-for-you products.

Five years ago, the London-based family spotted a gap in the market for ice lollies which offered more in the way of quality than colourings, flavourings and sugar-water. Co-founder Karis Gesua says: “There was nothing on the market that was healthy, and we came up with a concept where the ingredients are organic, use whole fruit, and avoid all of the major allergens.”

Producing over a million ice lollies a year, the next stage in

its development involves aligning its packaging with sustainability credentials. This year, LICKALIX has taken the bold step to move out of polypropylene (PP) film to a compostable alternative.

“Once we have worked through our remaining stock of PP film, we believe we will become the first ‘frozen treat’ company to use material which is compostable, and carries the ‘Plastic Free’ consumer trust mark, to wrap its products,” says Karis.

When LICKALIX opted to purchase a new PLC-controlled

flow-wrapper from Ilapak, the machinery company suggested that it should consider in-line TIJ coding as the optimum solution for its best-before dates, batch codes and other variable information.

Over the coming months and years, it’s a place that we are all going to

have to get used to. As we move from the frictionless trade environment of the EU’s customs union to new tariffs and harder borders, British businesses will have to learn how to live with much greater uncertainty and increased levels of risk.

One of the challenges relates to just-in-time production – the delivery of goods on demand which now applies to a wide range of industries. The exigencies of freshness, fashion and cash flow means that virtually no-one these days hoards large volumes of stock. Instead a car manufacturer, for instance, will pre-order the door handles for a new model from the supplier and draw down supplies at the last moment, as needed. But there’s a downside to this finely-tuned supply chain, especially in stressful times.

Imagine a post-Brexit scenario for our manufacturer, when unusually large orders have been placed for their new star of the MotorShow and the door handles, ordered from Europe, are held up at the border. Production, dependent on all parts being fitted in sequence, grinds to a halt until the delay is resolved. Worse still, the managing director then discovers that there is no remedy for the loss through insurance. Because contingent delay isn’t an insurable event.

The job of corporate risk managers is to identify their organisational exposures as best they can and then work to manage or eliminate those risks. Often, commercial insurance can be used to remove some or part of a risk where an insured peril is involved. But if the insurer cannot calculate the chance of something happening it is

more than likely that the risk will be uninsurable.

The road haulage CMR conditions make it clear that there is no liability for losses if they are caused by circumstance the carrier could not avoid or was unable to prevent. In other words, customs delays, industrial action or an accident are not the fault of the carrier. And the consequential loss from such events is not insurable either.

Following the outstanding success of Retran® Bell Packaging have introduced an exciting new initiative to their range of

recycled packaging.

Retran® was introduced in 2018 with a minimum recycled content of 70% which comes from post-consumer waste. This product has been adopted by most Bell customers.

Commenting on the introduction, Managing Director Peter Lennie stated “we have been absolutely delighted with the take up by Bell customers for Retran®. With no reduction in

strength the new film has excellent optical clarity and the switch from the original Virgin PET formulation to the recycled version has been easy”.

Bell have confirmed there is no impact on cost and the performance of the film in assembly is equal to normal production. An added advantage of Retran® is that it is suitable for kerbside collection and is 100% recyclable.

Discussions with our major customers and High Street retailers confirm that the way forward for plastic packaging is to recycle wherever possible. Bell Packaging recognise this is proving difficult

for many consumers as they don’t know which packaging can be recycled.

The proposed streamlining on the types of plastic available is supported by Bell. To ensure that the packaging supplied by the company is easily identified Bell have introduced a number of initiatives, detailed as follows:

RETRAN® TUBINGTo help the end customers identify the recycling nature of this product all Retran® products can be embossed with a recyclable logo.

RETRAN® FOLDING BOXESContaining a minimum 70% recycled content these boxes are easy to assemble and have excellent optical qualities. Here again we recommend that any new designs of box are identified using a recyclable logo.

INSERTSMade using 100% recycled PET all new designs of formed insert will incorporate the recycled PET logo.

END CAPS These are made using various polymers depending on the application. Bell’s production is investing in new machinery to enable identification of each component using the appropriate recycled logo.

The move to identify the types of plastic being used will enable consumers and recyclers identify and separate the components easily.

Commenting on the announcement Mr Lennie stated “Bell is committed to the recycling of all plastics. Currently this can be done

locally where facilities exist however with the initiatives announced by Government agency “DEFRA” and new recycling facilities planned by BIFFA the opportunity for the UK to become Europe’s leading recycling nation is too good an opportunity to miss.”

“For those plastics that cannot be easily recycled these can be reprocessed into so many other uses such as polymer to make garden furniture, housing products and more recently new road surfaces.”

For samples and more information on these initiatives please contact the Bell offices on +44 (0)1582 459292 or email [email protected]

Physik Instrumente (PI) has enjoyed another successful Motion Control Industry Awards,

reaching the finals of the Technical Innovation of the Year award for its newly developed PIRest active shims. The company, which was also a runner up in the Manufacturer of the Year category, impressed judges with a ground-breaking solution that offers design engineers a simpler, faster and more practical option for precision, long-term alignment of components.

PIRest actuators have been developed to solve the challenges of traditional methods of precision adjustments by combining convenient, nanometre-precision alignment with long-term stability. Once set, these active shims offer exceptional positioning stability without requiring a constant power supply. Crucially, PIRest actuators can be easily adjusted in situ using remote access, making them ideal for hard-to-access locations, such as astronomy applications in outer space or within complex instruments.

“We’re delighted to have caught the eye of the judges at the MCI Awards for the fourth year in succession,” said Managing Director Kevin Grimley. “We are really pleased and proud to have been finalists in both these categories. Technical innovation is at the heart of everything we do, and the revolutionary technology of our PIRest actuators provides a unique capability for anyone involved in precise mechanical alignment. I congratulate everyone who contributed to this project.”

Industrial Process News aims to offer our readers the most forward thinking companies out there. With technology

moving at an unimaginable pace, ensuring that the most state of the art products and services are available is vital. This is why as our Subsea Company of the Month we have chosen Digital Edge Subsea, a designer and manufacturer of cutting edge subsea inspection systems.

In 2009 Digital Edge Subsea began producing the original EdgeDVR, a single channel SD digital video recorder and inspection system. The product came about as a result of the challenges that co-founder John Benson had encountered when working offshore having to use inspection systems that were overly complicated, unintuitive and frequently accustom to failure. Since 2009 the company has grown immensely and now produces a broad range of products covering all manner of needs. Digital Edge Subsea’s primary function is to provide innovative digital video recording systems to the remote operated vehicle (ROV) and diving industries. Digital Edge Subsea’s digital recorder, digital video overlay and video inspection equipment are all capable of producing outcomes of the highest quality while requiring minimal work from the user. Videos taken can be shared and watched on any Windows PC without the need for extra codecs or software.

The company is based in Ulverston, Cumbria and has distributors in Aberdeen, Houston, UAE, Singapore, New Zealand, Brazil and Norway. The location holds a notable reputation for housing subsea companies, with noteworthy examples including Tritech, Siemens, Orcina, Link subsea, Fortis Design and Blueprint Subsea. Ulverston is 10 miles from Barrow-in-Furness, a few hundred meters off of the coast of which is one of Europe’s largest offshore wind farms.

Digital Edge Subsea predominantly serves the oil and gas industry with its products being distributed and used worldwide. As opposed

to many competing companies whose systems are largely focused on inspection, Digital Edge Subsea’s EdgeDVR system caters for ROV personnel and hardware. At the top of the present EdgeDVR range is the EdgeDVR-1HD-4SD: a quad channel video recorder capable of recording one channel of high definition and three channels of standard definition footage. The simultaneous four channel display makes the system ideal for multiple divers or ROVs or an ROV that operates using multiple cameras and sonar. The system can be set up so that the centre channel is displayed in high definition

and offers a built in switcher giving the operator the option of switching

easily between video inputs when in one or two channel recording

mode.

The company pours a great deal of energy and time into research and

development and is constantly improving on its existing products. Managing Director John Benson tells us “For the past 10 years our Version 4 EdgeDVR software has been used worldwide and with a proven record of reliability it has been accepted into the industry by all the major ROV and diving companies. We are launching our new Version 5 software within the next couple of months. The

new software has three levels, EdgeLite, Edge and EdgePro. This has been matched with up to date hardware to create a fresh look and increased recording capability.”

The company also provides a rental service that can be delivered to clients worldwide. Through renting with Digital Edge Subsea directly the customer gains access to the company’s flawless

support service. The models available to rent are as follow: EdgeDVR 1HD 4SD, 1HD 2SD, 1HD 1SD, 4SD, 2SD and 1SD, along with ROV Test Boxes, ROV Tools. Having access to a rental service allows customers to make the most of Digital Edge Subsea’s products without having to commit to permanent purchase. This greatly cuts costs and eradicates the inconveniences of having to negotiate storage and long term maintenance of the product or products.

Digital Edge Subsea has recently introduced a new team of programmers. The team is made up of members with an extensive offshore background making it ideal for the development of subsea products. Ensuring

that products move in unison with technology and demand is crucial for any business but is especially important to a business that serves the kind of industries that Digital Edge Subsea does. Recording and inspection software and hardware are constantly evolving and for a company of Digital Edge Subsea’s nature making sure that products are consistent with new technologies is as important for the company as it is for the customer. Subsequently, Digital Edge Subsea keeps product development at the core of its practice.

During 2019 the company will be launching the new generation of offshore DVR’s with increased recording capacity and features.

The company is currently in the development stages of producing a pipeline inspection system as most existing systems cater predominantly for structural inspection. Creating a system that works for pipeline inspection would massively enhance the condition in which offshore pipelines can be kept. Digital Edge Subsea in addition to developing and distributing its own

range of products is a distributor of Australia based Blueprint Labs’ products. Blueprint labs’ range of subsea manipulators are renowned for their reliability and Digital Edge Subsea will be heavily promoting the range throughout the foreseeable future as well as Blueprint Subsea’s range of multi-beam sonars, the Oculus. Building and establishing relationships is integral to sustaining and expanding a business. Acknowledging this, Digital Edge Subsea regularly attends trade shows and exhibitions. Notable mentions among the long list of shows the company participates in are as follows: OTC (Houston), Offshore Europe (Aberdeen), Oceanology, Ocean Business, AOG, OSEA

Singapore and Subsea Expo. The effort that Digital Edge Subsea puts in to establishing a brand presence matches the effort that it puts in to developing new technology and products. With this kind of attitude it’s hard to imagine anything but growth in the company’s future despite its already lengthy list of clients.
