Erin Malkowski received her BFA in Graphic Design and Printmaking from Minnesota State University in Moorhead and graduated with her MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from University of the Arts. She currently teaches Basics of Graphic Software in the Museum Studies MFA program at University of the Arts every fall. During the rest of the week she is a Book Conservation Technician at University of Pennsylvania and Wagner Free Institute of Science, as well as an artist and freelance graphic designer.

Course Description Illustrator is a powerful tool that helps you create infinitely scalable vector graphics. The program is used by Artists, Illustrators, and Designers alike. In this course you will learn how to use the application to create logos, icons, and translate drawings to editable digital format. This course focuses on a practical overview of Adobe Illustrator's interface, workspace, tools and techniques. You will learn to build with shapes, colors, gradients and lines while integrating good use of typography. The skills you learn in this class will help you design page layouts, website mock-ups or wireframes that add distinction and professionalism to any business or personal work.

Course Overview Each class will be divided between a lectures/design objectives and in-class work. Some weeks will require students to complete out of classroom assignments. This course will integrate the theory of typography and design within each project by way of examples and readings. Students will be responsible for getting work printed for assignments. Readings, Quizzes, Design Projects, Design Objectives (Lectures), Presentations and Critiques, will all be part of the curriculum.

Course Objectives/Learning Objectives Upon completing this course, students will:

• Have a proficiency in a broad range of design skills pertaining to publication design, including the understanding typography, color, layout, tables, pictures, graphics, styles and interactive elements. • Understand the difference between Vector document and Pixel document • Working knowledge of workspace • Basic skills using the Pen Tool • Have the ability to build shapes and design using shape building tools and pathfinder • Have a basic understanding of Typography and how it is used in design

• Be able to use Type and Type tools efficiently • Understand Clipping Masks • Understand Layers and their uses within Illustrator • Have basic working knowledge of Styles and Effects • Have the ability to create a well designed layout, logo, or other design materials for print or web • Understand Exporting and Output

Course Resources Software: Course will be conducted using Adobe Illustrator. Adobe CC is the version we will be using in the classroom. Adobe Acrobat will also be used to view pdf files. Students will have access to the computer labs during the course of the term.

Literature: Required Readings will be supplied by the instructor

Recommended but not Required:

• “How to Design Cool Stuff” Before and After Magazine by John Wade

• “Thinking with Type” Ellen Lupton

For tutorials and additional help it is recommended to visit Lynda.com or Adobe.com for video tutorials. These tutorials

are free and/or low cost.

Additional Course Materials & Supplies • Sketchbook ( suggested, for notes, planning projects and idea sketching ) • USB drive with a minimum memory capacity of 2GB

Course Policies Student Feedback/Communication If you experience a legitimate emergency, which will prevent you from completing required coursework on time, I expect you to communicate with me at the earliest reasonable opportunity. Please state the nature of the emergency and when you expect to turn in the coursework. Submitting Electronic Files All electronic files must be submitted in .pdf format unless otherwise noted. Please name your file in the using the following convention: Project Name_First Initial Last Name. Thus, if my name where John Smith and I was submitting the “Narrative PowerPoint” assignment, I would rename the “NarrativePowerPoint.pdf” file as “NarativePowerPoint_JSmith”.

Attendance + Participation All students are expected to attend classes regularly and promptly, and for the duration of the scheduled instructional time. Individual instructors will decide the optimum time for taking attendance and may penalize for habitual lateness or absence. Repeated absences may result in a grade of "F" for the course. *Students who withdraw from a course must do so in writing. Non-attendance does not constitute an official withdrawal .

Grading Students taking the course for non-credit will still receive a PASS/FAIL grade. Students taking the course for credit will receive a letter grade based on the following criteria:
