The unique event was strongly supported by Federal Members Ken Wyatt (Hasluck), Christian Porter (Pearce), Alannah MacTiernan (Perth) and Luke Simpkins (Cowan) and attracted more than 450 influential people, including Senators and Ministers. In what was an inaugural event for the City of Swan and hosted by TV personality Anna Gare, businesses and cultural groups were provided with the opportunity to showcase food, wine, artworks and services as well as the chance to meet with dignitaries to discuss issues affecting their own business. Prime Minister Tony Abbott also took time out of his busy schedule to meet with some members of the visiting delegation and showed a particular interest in the work of local indigenous clothing company Brothaboy. The event has since attracted significant media exposure for both the City and local businesses, highlighting the truly outstanding quality on offer throughout the region.

Message from the MayorHello and welcome to the third edition of Swan Biz.The City has been involved in some fascinating events over the last few months that have raised the profile of the area and highlighted the great partnership work that businesses and government agencies are currently doing.

During June, the City led a delegation of 28 businesses from the Swan Valley and surrounding areas to Parliament House in Canberra, to showcase the regions food, wine, businesses and cultural groups. The event was a huge success with some excellent feedback and media coverage.

The Swan Connect event also took place recently and was attended by the State Premier and Minister for Planning.

The City played a supporting role to the Swan Chamber of Commerce in delivering an informative and structured economic forum to discuss the future of the region.

The fantastic Cradle of the Colony exhibition was launched in the City during April and is open seven days a week at the Swan Valley Visitor Centre in Guildford. Please take time to visit this historic story of Guildford and the Swan Valley.

Accessing Government programs and servicesThe City of Swan in partnership with the Malaga and Districts Business Association (MDBA), have provided local businesses with access to a series of programs and services from a number of Government departments as part of the City’s Business Engagement program.The first event was held on Tuesday, April 14, where AusIndustry presented at the MDBA Breakfast to discuss business growth, development and to highlight their services and available grants. This presentation was followed by individual meetings with AusIndustry representatives in order to engage with local businesses and related associations from within the City of Swan.

The Swan Business Engagement program will be hosting another event this year on August 11, to inform and educate local business owners and operators within the City of Swan. The events will feature presentations on Accessing Government Programs and Services. All businesses are encouraged to attend.

Networking event benefits local businessesThe City of Swan and its tourism partners hosted a networking event for local business owners at the historic Guildford Landing building. The Who’s Who in Tourism event, part of the City’s Economic Development program, played host to over 40 members of the local business community on April 23, 2015.The event provided local tourism businesses with information on the City’s role in the local tourism industry as well as introducing some of the leading tourism organisations across the region including Tourism Western Australia, the Tourism Council of Western Australia, Experience Perth and the Australian Tourism Export Council.

Representatives from each tourism organisation presented information about their company and the projects they are currently undertaking, as well as highlighting the services available to local businesses.

The City of Swan is fully committed to providing the necessary support to local businesses in order to help them gain a better understating of the tourism industry and the support that is available to them from tourism bodies and Council.

The event aims to assist in the development of an attractive tourism product to sell to international markets …

WATEX a winner as guests experience the Swan ValleyThe best of the Swan Valley was on show at the Western Australian Tourism Exchange (WATEX) held at the Novotel Vines Resort on April 20, 2015. The WATEX event, proudly supported by the City of Swan, is a Tourism Western Australia trade event focusing on training and product development, with the aim of increasing Western Australia’s appeal in the international tourist market.The event, which aims to assist in the development of an attractive tourism product to sell to international markets, was attended by a number of foreign dignitaries including travel agents from Western Australia’s core tourism markets in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, as well as local businesses and key stakeholders. The event provided attendees with a unique opportunity to network with other businesses to build relationships and to show off the award winning and picturesque Swan Valley.

A number of group networking activities took place throughout the day including a Wine Appreciation Tour by Swan Valley Tours, a Vineyard Meander Tour by Swan Valley Wagon Trails, a Swan Valley Tour by Pink Bus Tours, Speed Grazing by Taste Bud Tours and golf at The Vines Resort itself.

A number of local businesses took up the opportunity to participate in the Swan Valley markets to showcase their products for tasting, these included

Sandalford Estate, Maalinup Aboriginal Gallery, The Great Northern Distillery, Mandoon Estate, Olive Farm Wines & The Cheese Barrel, Nielson Estate Wines, Seasonal Roadside Stalls, Elmars in the Valley, Morish Nuts, Entopia Wines, Ugly Duckling Wines and Lamonts Winery.

The event was concluded with a sumptuous Gala Dinner that showcased some of the fantastic cuisine that is available both in the Swan Valley and across Western Australia.

Tourism Council AwardsEach year, the Tourism Council of Western Australia host the Western Australia Tourism Awards, an annual award ceremony celebrating the unique tourism destinations and businesses Western Australia has to offer. The award is now in its 43rd year and is designed to reward and promote excellence within the Western Australian Tourism Industry over a number of different categories.

Tourism operators are encouraged to enter the awards providing themselves with the opportunity to be publically recognised for their industry contribution and achievements over the last 12 months.

Get accredited and winThe Tourism Council of Western Australia represents tourism businesses and actively promotes tourism within WA whilst also presenting industry policy and developing sustainable tourism for the long term. Tourism Council WA is also the top body for Western Australia’s regional and industry tourism associations, and represents over 1000 private and public sectors within the tourism industry including accommodation, hospitality, attractions, aviation, venues, tours and events. By representing these diverse businesses, the council acts as a voice to represent the businesses and make critical decisions regarding future development and marketing.

The City of Swan has established a relationship with the Tourism Council of Western Australia and will provide local businesses with the opportunity to meet with the Tourism Council for one‑on‑one discussions that will benefit their business as part of the Swan Business Engagement program.

In order for a tourism business to enter the awards they must have accreditation by an Australian Tourism Accreditation Program, however a business that is not currently accredited can enter as long as their accreditation is completed by Monday, August 10.

City of Swan features at Swan ConnectThe Swan Chamber of Commerce held its Connect Economic Conference at Mandoon Estate on Friday, May 22.The Swan Connect event brought together leaders in business, industry and government, including the State Premier and the Minister for Planning, to explore and realise the economic opportunities on offer in the Swan region and highlighted the City of Swan region as Western Australia’s seventh largest economy, generating $8.3 billion and sustaining 94,000 jobs.

There were several highlights at the event including the State Premier officially opening the conference and talking about projects such as the Midland Public Hospital and the newly announced Curtin University Medical School, the Hon John Day, Minister for Planning announcing the final Midland Master Plan and City Mayor, Cr Charlie Zannino launching the first glimpse of the Midland Oval Precinct plans, showing a major regeneration, realising the long held potential of the centre of Midland.

The conference created a great sense of confidence in the region, and that the long term vision will deliver real social, economic and environmental benefits.

Cradle of the Colony ExhibitionThe Cradle of the Colony exhibition which covers the story of Guildford and the Swan Valley, through the years from 1827 to present day, was opened to the public on Thursday April 23, 2015.Partnering with the Swan Guildford Historical Society and jointly funded by Lotterywest and the City of Swan; the City is excited to be involved with the bringing together of the third most significant collection of WA’s history to our back door.

Housed at the Swan Valley Visitor Centre in Guildford, the exhibition is open for you to enjoy seven days a week on the corner of Meadow and Swan Streets.
