Next week’s readings - Ordinary Time 5th Sunday

Isaiah 58:7-10 Psalm 112 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Matthew 5:13-16

Some years ago a retreat leader asked participants to name the image of Jesus that meant the most to them? The infant Jesus, the young man in the Temple, the miracle-worker at Cana, the Last Supper, the suffering Jesus, the resurrected Christ? The readings today invite us to hold in tension multiple images of our Lord and Savior. The prophet Malachi paints a picture

of the one who is coming as refiner’s fire, sent to purify the people. In the letter to the Hebrews, Jesus is the high priest who expiates the sins of the people through his own body and blood. In the gospel, he is a helpless baby only a little over a month old, and in today’s psalm he is the King of Glory, a mighty Savior. Do you have a favorite image of Jesus?

Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’ (On Care for Our Common Home)

Chapter One – What Is Happening to Our Common Home

V. Global Inequality

Pope Francis begins this section by noting that the human environment and the natural

environment deteriorate together; we cannot adequately combat environmental

degradation unless we attend to causes related to human and social degradation.

- Depletion of fishing reserves especially hurt small fishing communities without

the means to replace those resources.

- Water pollution particularly affects the poor who cannot

buy bottled water.

- Rises in sea levels mainly affect impoverished coastal

populations who have nowhere else to go.

There is little in the way of clear awareness of problems which especially affect

the excluded. Yet, they are the majority of the planet’s population, billions of people.

Many professionals, opinion makers, communications media and centers of power,

are far removed from the poor, with little direct contact with their problems. Today,

we have to realize that a true ecological approach always becomes a social approach;

it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both

the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.

Living the Gospel: Contemplation and Action

A 2019-2020 Adult Faith Formation Series A Joint Venture of St. Camillus, Resurrection,

and St. John the Baptist Catholic Churches This series of retreats, workshops and discussions brings the Gospel to bear on our daily lives. Using the teach-ings of Jesus, we will personally and collectively ground ourselves in God, becoming more open to the ways God’s love can transform us. The series centers on living the contemplative dimension of the Gospel, which is about experiencing God beyond thinking. Led by staff and parishioners, except where noted. February 19: What the Hell? The Gospel & the Doctrine of Hell

7:30pm – 9:00pm, Camilla Room, St. Camillus Catholic Church, led by L.J. Milone. Grounded in the contemplative dimension of the Gospel, this session seeks to reflect on

the significance of hell, how we can understand it today, and how we need to question it. We take the perspective that heaven and hell start here and now. After all, St. Catherine of Genoa says, “As for paradise, God has placed no doors there. Whoever wishes to enter, does so. All-merciful God stands there with His arms open, waiting to receive us into His glory.”

See the Play “Queen Esther” The SJB Sodality invites you to join them in seeing the play, “Queen Esther” at the Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster, PA, and to dine at Miller’s Smorgasbord, Wednesday, April 29, 2020. Board the bus at 7 a.m., behind the church in the back parking lot, depart at 7:15 a.m. and return at 7:15 p.m. The cost is $145, which includes snacks, transportation, show, lunch, taxes and gratuity. To reserve your spot, please send a $50 check, made payable to St. John the Baptist, with Sodality Trip in the memo section. The $95 balance must be paid by Thursday,

March 26, 2020. Mail your check to St. John the Baptist Church, 12319 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20904. Attention Sodality. If you have any questions, please call Ellen Cygnarowicz, 301-879-0232, or Mary Ellen Monk, 301-622-2892.

Bible Study

on Saturday Mornings

"If the Psalm prays, do you too pray, if it laments, so do you too, if it renders thanks, so do you also rejoice with it; if it hopes, so you too; if it speaks in the accents of fear, do you also tremble with it; for all that is written therein is meant to be a mirror for us." St. Augustine, Sermons on Psalm 30

Beginning Saturday, February 15, an eight-week session on the Psalms will be offered for exploration and understanding. There also will be an emphasis on praying with these ancient poems. When you hear or sing them at Mass, they will speak more clearly to you as you pray.

If you are interested in joining Bible Study on 8 Saturdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the Lyon Ctr., please con-tact Alicia Urban, 301-879-4368 or [email protected].

Make Me an Instrument

of Your Peace:

A Prayer for Civility

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where uncivil words prevail, show me how to model love.

Help me remember the God-given dignity of all and invite others to do the same.

Show me how to build bridges and not walls and see first what unites us rather than how we diverge.

Let me seek to understand before asking to be understood.

Give me a listening heart filled with empathy and compassion.

May I be clear in sharing my own position and respectful and civil in describing those of others.

Let me never tolerate hateful ideas.

May I invite all to charity and love.

As Catholics, we have a long tradition of engagement in the political process as a means of putting our faith into action. We are called to bring the best of ourselves and our faith to the public square.

Civilize It is a non-partisan call to focus on the dignity of all people, even when we disagree, and to put faith in action by bearing witness to a better way forward.

Civilize It is about making room in your heart for those with whom you disagree. We are called to recognize that each one of us is a beloved child of God and to re-spond in love to that reality. Take the pledge below as an individual, family, or Community:

1. Civility To recognize the human dignity of those with whom I disagree, treat others with respect, and rise above attacks when directed at me.

2. Clarity To root my political viewpoints in the Gospel and a well formed conscience, which involves prayer, conversation, study and listening. I will stand up for my convictions and speak out when I witness language that disparages others' dignity, while also listening and seeking to understand others’ experiences.

3. Compassion To encounter others with a tone and posture which affirms that I honor the dignity of others and invites others to do the same. I will presume others’ best intentions and listen to their stories with empathy.   I will strive to understand before seeking to be understood.

Go to: https://www.wearesaltandlight.org/civilize-it to sign up and see who else has taken the pledge!

Mystical Word

written by L.J. Milone, Director of Faith Formation, [email protected]

Today, we reflect on a different Gospel passage: “Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear…Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them… And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? ...Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you— you of little faith? Therefore do not worry… But strive first for the kingdom of God” (see Matthew 6:25-33).

Throw it all away! We don’t need anything to be happy. Jesus is saying we are happiest with nothing. Through the images of birds, lilies, and grass, Jesus transmits happy nothingness. He makes us susceptible to the virus of divine nothingness. Jesus focuses on the basics of life – food, drink, clothing – but this equally applies to everything else. And, that includes experiences. There is not one single thing on this earth that we need to be unconditionally happy.

Jesus holds up two delightful images in this Gospel: the birds of the air and the lilies of the field. They do not give any thought to yesterday or tomorrow. They are fully in the present moment. They do not get upset or offended. They do not crave anything or cling to anything. They are perfect images of contemplative faith in the mystery of God, who is all anyone, any creature, needs. We might take the following lesson from the birds of the air and the lilies of the field: nothing matters.

Nothing matters. We can understand this lesson in two ways. First, we can understand “nothing matters” with a lower case “n.” Everything that happens in a day does not matter in the light of eternity. Not one thing that occurs, not one experience matters more than the divine nothing within me, one with me. As my day unfolds, worries and resentments creep in cravings and avoidance strategies bubble under the surface of our consciousness and often shoot up into our experience. Our attachments tend to rule our days. As they pop up, we can reply, “nothing matters.”

It is a good contemplative formula to recall whenever we get upset about something, about a hurtful comment or a small annoyance, for instance. We can ask ourselves: does it really matter?

We can understand “nothing matters” in another way, that is, with an upper case “N”: “Nothing matters.” In this case, the phrase means the divine nothing is all that matters. So, the ultimate practice is simply to lose oneself in the divine nothing. We know the absolute when we meditate, that is, pray in simple faith without active thinking. Recalling a formula like “nothing matters” or “this isn’t that important” when faced with a negative experience can help us shift into the state of interior silence in which we disregard all self-talk. In

this silence, we know nothing matters and Nothing matters.

Jesus brings in a third image from nature: the grass of the field. Of this grass, Jesus says it is “alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven.” From the grass of the field we learn the lesson of impermanence. Nothing lasts. Again, we can take this in two senses: not one thing, person, or creature will last forever. Everything passes, nothing lasts (lower case “n”). But the divine nothing lasts forever – Nothing lasts, upper case “N.” The divine nothing is eternal, and our deepest reality is the divine nothing. The core of who we really are is eternal.

If nothing lasts, then nothing matters. If Nothing lasts, then Nothing matters. The birds of the air, the lilies and grass of the field are natural images for knowing these truths. For, these creatures of God intuitively understand that nothing lasts and that nothing matters, that Nothing lasts and Nothing matters. They are models for us as we come to know the divine mystery who helps us to see that everything else is relative and impermanent.

The paradox is that once the divine nothing is the center of life, all the people and events of this world, all things, matter more than ever. Only, there is freedom, joy, and detachment. Everything becomes important because God loves everything. Still we see the unimportant fades in significance as we realize the divine nothing is the only true absolute. Worry and anxiety vanish, and bliss awakens.
