On Friday, December 18th we heard from Bishop Mark Bartosic on the Cardinal’s deci-sion regarding the future of the Renew My Church Rogers Park-Edgewater parishes. Rogers Park-Edgewater Renew My Church Up-date: December 18, 2020 Discernment Process St. Gertrude, St. Ignatius, and St. Jerome Parishes en-gaged in the Renew My Church (RMC) “Discernment and Decision” process through the fall of 2020. The Grouping Feedback and Discernment team (GFDT), which was made up of members from each parish com-munity, met to review and discern the future parish struc-ture for the area. Our deepest appreciation goes to the GFDT who prayerfully discerned the parish grouping structure during this challenging time. Based on their meetings and feedback gathered from the larger parish community, they submitted feedback to the archdiocese. The Archdiocesan Standards and Recom-mendations Commission, which includes representatives from across the Archdiocese of Chicago, reviewed the feedback and other information, including financial sum-maries, capital needs and parish trends. Cardinal Cupich and Bishop Bartosic are grateful to Fr. Prendergast, Fr. Reyes, Deacon Murphy and the Grouping Teams who gathered throughout the past few months, as well as the parishioners, the Vicariate Team, the Presbyt-eral Council and RMC Commission who offered feedback through the recent discernment process. Your persever-ance was admirable, particularly during these difficult months of the pandemic.

Outcome In the past few weeks, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbish-op of Chicago, the archdiocese’s auxiliary bishops, and the archdiocese’s Presbyteral Council met to discuss the Commission’s recommendation. Based upon those dis-cussions and prayerful consideration, Cardinal Cupich made the following decisions regarding the parish struc-ture in Rogers Park-Edgewater.

St. Ignatius Parish will cease as a parish and be canonically divided between St. Gertrude and St. Jerome Parishes. This organizational change will take effect no later than July 1, 2021. A portion of the territory of St. Ignatius will be assigned to St. Gertrude, and a portion will be assigned to St. Je-rome. St. Gertrude Parish and St. Jerome Parish will each retain their names. The Renew My Church Commission has additionally recommended:

All regularly scheduled Masses in the grouping transition to St. Gertrude and St. Jerome no later than first Sunday of Advent 2021. Regularly scheduled Masses at St. Ignatius would conclude by that time, though the church would remain available for occasional use; at least until the fu-ture of the entire campus is determined.

• Honoring the intent of local leadership’s expecta-tions for the St. Ignatius community and their associa-tion between St. Gertrude and St. Jerome, two-thirds (2/3) of any future asset sale proceeds, after expenses, will accrue to St. Jerome, and one-third (1/3) will ac-crue to St. Gertrude.

• The future location of the devotional shrines at St. Ignatius will be part of the transition planning, dis-cussed in partnership with leadership of each devo-tion. • That local leadership continue to engage with Loyola University and the local Jesuit community regarding their interest in developing a mission out-reach center at the St. Ignatius campus, while explor-ing all options for reducing facility operations and capital expenses. While the Operations Transition phase typically takes a year, this particular transition may extend beyond that timeframe.

Northside Catholic Academy will continue to serve as the school connected to these parishes. The archdiocese will work with parish leadership of St. Gertrude, St. Jerome, and the other co-sponsor parishes to update the parish support agreement now that all parish structural decisions for sponsor parishes have been completed. Parish Structure Rationale

Continuing three independent parishes would not be sus-tainable based on priest availability and the ability to fi-nancially support vital ministry and operations. Consider-ing the size and scope of ministry and facilities in the grouping, uniting as one parish from three parishes was not deemed viable.

Hosting the regular schedule of Masses at two locations (one location within each parish) provides the framework for true unification among these parishes. Additionally, continuing worship at St. Gertrude and St. Jerome pro-vides a north / south geographic coverage across the grouping and supports the educational ministry of NCA with a regular worship space at St. Gertrude.

Dividing St. Ignatius between the two parishes rather than wholly uniting St. Ignatius to either St. Jerome or St. Ger-trude offers a path to honor the likely way in which pa-rishioners will move. Based on projections discussed dur-ing the discernment process, the best estimate of transfer of regularly scheduled worship within the grouping would be approximately two-thirds (2/3) of St. Ignatius parish-ioners would find a home at St. Jerome and one-third (1/3) at St. Gertrude.

We will look to local leadership to fully explore all op-tions for repurposing or selling property at the St. Ignatius campus to reduce overall operating and capital costs. The St. Ignatius campus will fall in the territory of St. Ger-trude Parish that will oversee the care, repurposing and/or selling of the campus.

Next Steps The parishes will embark upon the next phase of the re-newal process Operations Transition followed by “Building the New Reality,” to become a stronger, more sustainable presence for the future, capable of reaching more people in their work of making disciples of Jesus Christ, building communities with one another and inspir-ing witness in the world around us. Though the decision to close St Ignatius as a parish is difficult to hear I am also hopeful in that the diocese has allowed for the another year (or more) for the development of a Mis-sion Center proposal for the St Ignatius cam-pus. This will be a challenging undertaking as we come out of the restrictions of the pan-demic but Fr Dan and I will establish a “working mission center committee” of peo-ple from the three existing parishes, Loyola University and the local Jesuit community in the coming New Year. As Christ is born we know that God is with us. We will look to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to lead us into the reality of our new future. As I learn more about the Renew My Church ongoing process in the coming weeks I will keep you informed. We will host a “question and answer” session after our Sun-day Masses next weekend, January 9/10. May we search for the light of Christ in this time of transition. Peace, Deacon Chris

Building One Family of Faith: Many Gifts, One Spirit

This motto was adopted several years ago when our parish went through the Transformation initiative spon-sored by the archdiocese. A process to look at a parish’s strengths and weaknesses. This motto reflect-ed that St. Ignatius strength has been a welcoming di-verse parish that has many gifts and talents but whose spirits work for the "Greater Glory of God." Since the beginning of the parish, we have welcomed people from around the world. We have welcomed Italians, Irish, Luxembourgers, English, Belgians in the early part of the last century. Since the 1960 we have wel-comed Cubans, Mexican, Peruvians, Ecuadorians, Co-lombians, Argentineans which led to the introduction of Spanish and bilingual liturgies. Since the beginning of this century, we have seen Nigerians, Somalis, Syri-ans, Assyrians, Indians, Pakistanis, and Lebanese. We have learned about our various devotions, customs, foods. Each year on the feast of St. Ignatius we cele-brated our diversity with a bilingual liturgy and a fes-tive party. We are family and we come together to share good times - baptisms, weddings and to share difficult times - illnesses and funerals. Since 1976, that's 44 years, we have supported a food pantry through Ignatian Services that has fed our neighbors in need and served as the social outreach arm of the par-ish. During the pandemic with your support, we have served all who have come to our pantry. Each week the Ignatian Services column closes with "We are all Ignatian Services”. Since our church was complet-ed the music program was always an important part of parish life. We have had the joy of listening to beauti-ful voices that sang weekly. We have hosted profes-sional and amateur choirs and choral groups perform in our sacred space. We have been blessed to be part of "one holy catholic apostolic church" Right before Christmas, we were given the news that St. Ignatius will be closing in the future and our family will be dispersed to other parishes. We feel anger, grief, frustration, and loss. The parishioners of St. Ig-natius are strong and resilient, we have proven that time and time again, through World Wars, Depressions, the closing of the parish school and the current pan-demic. This time is a little different because we will not have the ability to meet in the worship space that has been our home. However, we know what it is like to be part of a family with many gifts and a desire to share God with others. Is this God's way of telling the people of St. Ignatius to go out and evangelize? To share with others who have not experienced the rich-ness that is the St. Ignatius faith community. Perhaps it is.

Remember we are all Ignatian Services.

Muchos Dones, Un Espíritu Este motto fue adoptado muchos años atrás, cuando nuestra parroquia hizo la iniciativa Transformación organizara por la arquidiócesis. Un proceso de refle-xionar sobre las fortalezas y debilidades de la parro-quia. Este motto refleja que la fortaleza de San Ignacio es ser una parroquia diversa y acogedora que tiene mu-chos dones y talentos pero cuyo espíritu trabaja para la “Mayor Gloria de Dios." Desde el comienzo de la pa-rroquia hemos acogido gente de todo el mundo. Hemos acogido italianos, irlandeses, luxemburgueses, ingle-ses , belgas al comienzo del siglo pasado. Desde 1960 hemos recibido cubanos, mexicanos, peruanos, ecuado-res, colombianos, argentinos lo que llevo a tener litur-gias bilingües y en español. Desde comienzo de este siglo hemos recibido nigerianos, somalíes, sirios, asi-rios, hindúes, paquistanies, y libaneses. Hemos apren-dido sobre sus devociones, costumbres, comidas. Cada año San Ignacio ha celebrado nuestra diversidad con liturgias bilingües y fiestas. Somos una familia y nos juntamos para compartir los buenos momentos– bautis-mos, bodas, y compartir los momentos difíciles– enfer-medades y funerales. Desde 1976, 44 años, hemos apoyado la despensa por medio de Servicios Ignacia-nos que ha alimentado nuestros vecinos necesitados y funcionado como el servicio social de la parroquia. Du-rante la pandemia con el apoyo, hemos servido a todos los que vienen a nuestra despensa. Cada semana la co-muna de Servicios Ignacianos termina con "Todos so-mos Servicios Ignacianos”. Desde el comienzo de nuestra iglesia el programa de música ha sido una im-portante parte de nuestra vida parroquial. Hemos teni-do la alegría de disfrutas las hermosas voces que can-tan semanalmente. Hemos visto coros profesionales y amateurs en nuestro espacio sagrado. Hemos sido ben-decidos de ser parte de "una santa iglesia católica apos-tólica" Justo antes de Navidad nos dieron la noticia que San Ignacio será cerrada y nuestras familias dispersadas en otras parroquias. Sentimos enojo, dolor, frustración y perdida. Los feligreses de San Ignacio son fuertes y resistentes, lo hemos comprobado una y otra vez, du-rante las Guerras Mundiales, Depresión, el cierre de la escuela y la pandemia actual. Este tiempo es un poso diferente porque no tendremos ha posibilidad de re-unirnos en el santuario que ha sido nuestro hogar. Aun así, sabemos lo que es ser parte de una familia con mu-chos dones y un deseo de compartir Dios con los de-más. ¿Esta Dios diciéndonos que la gente de San Igna-cio debe ir y evangelizar? Compartir con otros que no han tenido la rica experiencia de la comunidad de fe de San Ignacio. Quizás sea esto.
