Today’s Gospel begins immediately after Jesus told the disciples for the third time that he was going to suffer and die and that all of it was hap-pening under God’s providence. Just as his final passion prediction (Mark 10:32-34) was the most detailed, so Mark makes this story of the disciples’ incomprehension the most shocking. Jesus had ended his teaching about riches and poverty with the pronouncement: “But many that are first will be last, and [the] last will be first.” (Mark 10:31). That was the beginning of his declaration about the inevitability of his suf-fering. For some mind boggling reason, James and John decided that this was the right time to jockey for position in what they thought of as his coming glory. Years and years … and years ago, I drove to the seminary in North Jersey to be interviewed by the rector. I wanted to enter the seminary in September 1978. We had a great conversation, but he asked a perplexing question in the inter-view. He asked, “Do you have any ambitions as a priest?” It’s taken years to understand the nu-ance in the question. What he was asking was do I have plans to jockey for high positions in the church. My answer was to be a priest in a parish. I wonder what his reaction would have been if I said bishop, cardinal or Pope? I understand now, after witnessing ambitious clergy who sometimes forget the mission. James and John lost sight of the call and the ramifications of the call. They had ambitions that were contrary to Jesus’ call. And of course the other disciples had similar ambitions but weren’t shameless enough to voice them. This week reflect on your journey. Have your ambitions been healthy and in service to others? Have you had moments like James and John when you want position or status at the expense of others? Most likely we all have been caught in self serving ambition at times. Healthy self-reflection will anchor us in the broader vision of our mission … service to our Lord, Jesus Christ. Blessings, Fr. Michael

As you know, we are supported solely by individuals, community groups and the local churches. The Pantry is staffed and run by a group of dedicated volunteers. For all the ways CCHS continues to support Disciples’ Pantry we are deeply grateful.
