From the Pastor’s Desk

October 17/18 Dear Parish Family, Our In Nomine Domini renewal is about to take a huge step from drawing board to reality. We have already brought a number of projects to completion: Our bell tower and carillon are complete and ringing. Our interior lighting upgrade is 90% complete. We estimate that the total power of all our fixtures before the upgrade was about 21,600 watts! Now that will spin your electric meter. At this point we are brighter and now using only about 10% of that energy. The last piece of this project is to upgrade the front altar spots and the exterior church lighting for the building and walkways. Or course I am sure you are all anxious about the big projects: heating and air conditioning, pew refinishing, carpet, and restrooms. Here is the current schedule. November 2015 • Required upgrade to electric service • Contracts awarded for our geothermal wells—If required permits can be secured in time, the work will

be done before the new year. March / April 2016 • Beginning the day after Easter, March 26, our church will close for about 2 weeks to allow removal of

old radiators and installation of new heating / cooling units. • We are working to coordinate removal / refinishing of pews and floor refinishing in that same time

frame. • Depending on the schedule and temperatures, we may still be able to have Sunday Mass in Church—we

will use the church hall if needed. May 2006 • By mid May our air-conditioning is scheduled to be operational. • We will be able to put finishing touches on carpet and pew work as the job is completed. Rest Rooms • At the present time we have a design for the rest rooms. There will be two located in the east side

vestibule of the church (on the left as you face the altar). We are presently working our way through permits and creating final bid documents for the work. I hope this can be scheduled over the winter and early spring.

So as you can see there is a lot that has taken place. We are in a position now to see things really move in the next few months. Thank you so much for your generosity. None of this would be possible without your love for Sacred Hearts! Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Divorce and Remarriage: November 2, 2015 7 PM

Parish Center Where Do I Stand with the Church? This evening will be given by Fr. Mike Vetrano, our pastor. Fr. Mike is also an advocate at the tribunal in our diocese. Advocates help those seeking annulments to bring their case before the tribunal in a pastorally sensitive and compassionate manner. This evening is geared for those who wonder about where they or a friend or a family member stand with the church and will explain the various options open to those who were married in the church and now wish to begin a new relationship with the full blessing of the church.

Meet Jeannine Rose: Our new Director of Sacred Hearts

Parish Social Ministry

My name is Jeannine Rose and I am the

newest member of the staff at Sacred Hearts

of Jesus & Mary. In the position of

Director of Social Ministry, I hope to be

able to work with you to develop and re-

connect relationships with all members of

the Parish Community.

Previously, I have worked as Director of

Parish Outreach at. St. Lawrence the Martyr

in Sayville, as well as Coordinator of

Religious Education at St. Francis Cabrini in Coram. I am a native Long Islander.

Born in Smithtown, grew up in Centereach, went to college in Oakdale and raised

four children in Coram where I still reside. I come to Sacred Hearts keenly aware of

the many challenges of raising a family on Long Island. It is my hope that this

experience will help me to reach out to the members of the community, from our

seniors, to the homebound, to those in need as well as our Spanish speaking

parishioners and the Spanish Apostolate.

I can not do any of this work without you! I look forward to meeting you in the next

few weeks and months and hope you will stop in to the Office to say hello, and

consider volunteering to help me make this vision a reality. Par

Sunday’s readings are likely to speak quite directly to each of us. After all, haven’t we all

experienced suffering? And haven’t we hoped that our suffering will somehow prove worth the

pain? Don’t we all wish for glory of some kind? And aren’t we inclined to think that we can do

what it takes to achieve it? But do the readings speak as directly to us when Jesus makes it very

clear that to share in his glory we must serve selflessly, even if that results in torture and death?

Ouch! Why does this faith have to be so hard? Let’s ask ourselves, “Am I willing to serve

humbly with boundless generosity? What does that mean in my real, personal life?” Then, give

it a try.

Reflections On the Gospel from Pax Christi October 18, 2015

Religious Liberty in the United States

An Evening with Thomas Renker Monday Evening, October 19th

Increasingly, cultural changes that come into conflict with religious teaching are reflected in statutory, judge-made and administrative law. The transformation of these cultural movements into law affects the rights of religious people and organizations to conduct themselves in conformance with the teachings of their faith. Thomas Renker, General Counsel of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, will offer a perspective on the growing conflict between culture and religious freedom in the United States. Tom Renker joined the Diocese of Rockville Centre as General Counsel on October 22, 2007. For over 25 years, he has provided legal counsel to New York not-for-profit religious organizations and is now active, along with the grass roots Long Island organization, Catholics for Freedom of Religion, in raising awareness of growing governmental and cultural threats to the practice of religion in the public square. A native Long Islander and alumnus of Chaminade High School, Tom is a 1986 graduate of New York University School of Law and a 1982 graduate of Columbia College, Columbia University. A former resident of Sag Harbor, where his three children attended Stella Maris Regional School, he and his wife, Mary, now reside in Mineola and are parishioners of Corpus Christi parish.
