ORDER OF DIVINE WORSHIP

RESURRECTION OF THE LORD ~ EASTER SUNDAY

Eight-thirty & Eleven O'clock - Sunday, April 5, 2015

- Gathering Around the Word -

The Prelude is a veil dropped between everyday life and the Sanctuary. When you enter the Sanctuary, the music should separate the world without from the world within.

If you must whisper, let it be into the ear of God.

PRELUDE ...... Trumpet Tune on Lasst uns erfreuen - R. te Velde; Toccata for organ - T. Dubois Trumpet Tune - W. Boyce

GATHERING THE COMMUNITY ORGAN FANFARE on Easter Hymn - R. te Velde

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

- ABOUT TODAY’S MUSIC -

We thank Alex Miller and Bennett Frohock for their special musical contributions this morning, Tom Chang-Wei Lin for conducting the “Hallelujah” Chorus, and the Chancel Choir for their dedicated preparation for today’s services. Prelude: First is a newly-published organ piece that calls for a trumpet solo, and today it is heard with a real trumpet solo! This piece is dedicated “in celebration of the 125th anniversary of First Presbyterian Church, Stillwater, Oklahoma”. Theodore Dubois (1837-1924) was organist at the Church of the Madeleine in Paris and an influential teacher at the Paris Conservatory. Although perhaps best known for his oratorio The Seven Last Words of Christ, he also left a number of organ works, including this ebullient Toccata, so appropriate for this joyful Easter morning. English composer William Boyce (1711-1779) held several prominent positions, lastly Master of the King’s Musick and organist at the Chapel Royal. Like his earlier compatriots Purcell and Clarke, he knew how to write a good trumpet tune! Anthem: Aaron David Miller (b. 1972) is Director of Music and Organist at House of Hope Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, and a prize-winning organist and composer. His use of exciting rhythms and colors brings to life the text “Christ is risen: Alleluia!” Offertory: George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) composed his most famous oratorio, Messiah, in 1741. Interestingly, its 1742 premier in Dublin, Ireland served as a fundraiser for three charities: a hospital, an infirmary, and a debtor’s prison, from which 142 prisoners were released. Part II of Messiah (in three parts) deals with the passion, death and resurrection of Christ, culminating in the “Hallelujah” Chorus. Listen for the brilliant text painting in this familiar music. Postlude: Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937) was a world-renowned organ virtuoso and titular organist of St. Sulpice in Paris for 65 years. He concertized extensively, including in the U.S., and was professor of organ at the Paris Conservatory (succeeding César Franck), and later professor of composition (succeeding Dubois). He wrote many organ works, including ten “symphonies” for organ—works that use the organ in an orchestral manner and are in multi-movement, symphonic form. This famous Toccata, easily his best-known work, is the final movement from his fifth organ symphony.

Preaching the Beginning April 19th, 2015

Did you know that 1st Presbyterian Church of Stillwater is 125 years old this year? Come celebrate with us and try to imagine our early Church history at the 8:30 and 11:00 services on April 19th. Reverend Myers our 1st pastor will return to Stillwater. No doubt he will be amazed with the Church he founded as a missionary! Enjoy a free old fashioned Church picnic lunch with the delight of homemade ice cream and period games for the children after the 11:00 service. Call 372-5580 by 5 pm on Monday, April 13th and make your reservation for a day to make new memories and have fun. In the afternoon walk in downtown Stillwater and see where Presbyterians first gathered as a Church community. Enjoy the Run for the Arts festival!

Grand Piano Project As you are by now probably aware, the congregation is raising funds to purchase a new grand piano for our Fellowship Hall as part of our 125th anniversary celebration. We are aiming to raise $40,000 in time to have the new piano in place for World Communion Sunday, Oct. 4. (Detailed information is posted in the Narthex area, and in the March 2015 Ambassador.) James Causley has generously offered his time and talents to create a visual aid for this campaign. Look for it to appear in the Narthex by the end of this month! Contributions are gratefully accepted anytime: leave checks made out to First Presbyterian Church and marked “Grand Piano” in the offering plate or at the Church Office, or mail to First Presbyterian Church, 524 S. Duncan, Stillwater, OK, 74074.
