If there was ever a school year for the district’s record book, 2012-13 had to be that year! Coppell ISD’s ex-traordinary learners and outstanding staff members experienced tremendous success (as evidenced in the District Highlights), and “education” became the topic of choice for a variety of reasons:

• Education transformation efforts at the local, regional, and state levels• Legislative testimony on several key education bills • CISD’s school funding lawsuit • Bond election

Transformation and Legislative TestimonyLocal– Under the theme of “Operation: Transformation,” each of CISD’s campuses worked to create learning opportunities for students using the latest research on effective instructional strategies. The district con-tinues on its journey away from the “test preparation” focus - dominant in Texas public schools over the last decade - toward preparing students for success in their next endeavor, whether that means college or career. Emphasis has been placed on designing lessons that allow for stu-dent engagement and choice, integration of technology, and relevant content. Memorization of facts has been replaced by problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. We are excited about the growth we have made with our teachers in transforming our classrooms into student-centered, collaborative spaces. Learners at Coppell High School will have individual access to iPads (see article on p. 4) this school year as we migrate toward digital textbooks and 24/7 Internet connectivity.

Several pilot programs are beginning this school year that involve learn-ing with the use of technology. Coppell Middle School West will begin a blended learning cadre with 100 eighth grade students. These students will learn through a combined (“blended”) instructional approach em-ploying direct teach and laptop use in their four core content classes. At the elementary level, Cottonwood Creek and Wilson will pilot classroom sets of iPads in the fourth and fifth grades. It is our hope that these pilots will provide valuable insight as we seek to discover the appropriate role of technology in the learning process.

Regional – Our North Texas Regional Consortium (NTRC) of like-minded and high performing districts (Allen, Coppell, Frisco, Highland Park, Lew-isville, McKinney, Northwest, Plano, and Richardson) continued to focus on the articles (tenets) developed in 2006 by the Visioning Institute. In 2013-14, we will further address digital integration, develop more authentic ways to assess student achievement, and create accountabil-ity measures that may be used for statewide comparisons as well as evaluative purposes in our local community. The work of transformation is in the classroom where we should be engaging students with relevant content and assessing their mastery using authentic measures that take into consideration skills such as creativity, innovation, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem solving.(Visit http://www.transformtexas.org to learn more.)

State - The topic of “education” definitely took precedence during this year’s legislative session. Thanks in large part to the hard work and authorship of several educational bills by our own House Representa-tive and former school trustee, Bennett Ratliff, we experienced some

degree of success. I had the opportunity to testify on several of those bills during the session. House Bill (HB) 2824 would have allowed the Texas High Performance Schools Consortium (THPSC) - which I co-chaired - to work outside of the state’s test-heavy accountability system and create one that is more aligned with the needs of future learners. Both the House and Senate unanimously passed the bill, but Governor Perry vetoed it without fully understanding the potential research and development nature of the consortium. This bill may have died, but our resolve to transform the system of public education for the benefit of children never will.

The major education bill of the session was HB 5. This is a positive step since it recognizes that one size does not fit all, allows for different pathways toward graduation, and reduces the number of tests needed for graduation from 15 to 5. We will likely spend considerable time this year dissecting this huge bill in order to understand the impact of its numerous components. While this is a move in the right direction, we remain in a test-driven system, and HB 5 does not address many of the issues necessary for transforming public education. CISD will continue to work toward creating a system that focuses on the preparation of students for their future. School Funding LawsuitIn February, State District Judge John Dietz ruled that the state pro-vides inadequate and inequitable funding for schools. However, he will reopen the trial in January 2014 to hear new evidence and testimony regarding the lawsuit filed by school districts including Coppell ISD. The ruling to reopen the trial was based on changes made by the 83rd Legis-lature including restoration of $3.4 billion to the new state budget ($5.4 billion was cut during the 2011 session), and a decrease in the number of standardized tests required to graduate (state’s requirement of 15 tests was reduced to five). At this point, the case may not be concluded until the legislature meets again in 2015 which would delay its impact until the 2015-16 school year at the earliest.

Bond Election Support of the May bond election by the Coppell ISD community marked the initial step toward more extensive, long-range planning for the district. Twenty-five percent of the $79.5 million package includes construction of a new elementary school, named for Richard J. Lee, which will begin this fall in the southern sector of the district (Cypress Waters development). We will now move forward in planning for our future secondary space needs – especially at the middle school level.

The year-long process will also include planning for future technology and instructional needs and offers the district’s stakeholders (staff, learn-ers, parents, and the community at-large) an opportunity to participate. Together, we will explore ways for CISD to continue to improve and grow as a high performing, student-centered, public school system.

Board MeetingsCitizens of Coppell ISD are welcome to attend Board of Trustees’ meetings. The open portion of the regular meetings begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Vonita White Administration Building, 200 S. Denton Tap Road. Citizens interested in speaking at the meetings should contact the superintendent’s office at 214.496.8002. An open forum item is placed on each regular meeting’s agenda so that citizens may address trustees at that time; however, the Open Meet-ings Act prohibits board action on such items at that night’s meeting.

New Faces: Meet the New Leadership

Shannon EdwardsPrincipal of Denton Creek Elementary

Having been a member of the CISD staff for the past 19 years, Shannon Edwards is very familiar with the district’s mission and vision. Ms. Edwards has served as an assistant principal and teacher at Town Center Elementary, and in various campus

leadership roles. Her strong curriculum and technology background, in addition to her commitment to provide every learner with quality instruction, will assist her as she happily begins her role as the principal of Denton Creek.

Emily FroesePrincipal of Coppell Middle School West

Mrs. Froese (pronounced frō-zee) comes to us from Irving ISD. She is a former middle and high school educator and varsity coach. Her teaching background includes Special Education, English, Resource Reading, and Yearbook in the Mansfield

and Sharyland ISDs. She also played a significant role in the development and administration of the online/virtual-learning program in Irving ISD. Building strong relationships with students, parents and staff is at the center of Mrs. Froese’s core values, and she looks forward to joining the CMS West family.

Dr. Leanne ShiversDirector of New Tech High @ Coppell

For the past three years, Dr. Shivers served as the principal of CMS North, and also served one year as associate principal at CHS. As an instructional leader, Dr. Shivers has led her staff in integrating technology in the classroom and transforming

education into one that focuses on engagement and learner empowerment. Dr. Shivers is enthusiastic about working with the NTH@C learners, families and facilitators in the upcoming school year.

Amanda ZiaerPrincipal of Coppell Middle School North

Already a familiar face as the former assistant principal at CMS North, Mrs. Ziaer will continue to provide a challenging and engaging curriculum that will equip learners with the future-ready skills needed to be competitive and successful in an

ever-changing global society. Mrs. Ziaer is looking forward to continuing the tradition of excellence at CMS North.

Coming to us from Grapevine-Colleyville ISD, Mrs. Cato has served as an instructional coach, a member of the Language Arts curriculum writing team and digital classroom committee. Mrs. Cato is well versed in technology integration and literacy

instruction. Her strong communication and leadership skills will be an asset to the curriculum team.

Sam FarsaiiChief Technology Officer

Sam Farsaii comes to us from Irving ISD where he spent the last 13 years as the Program Director of Instructional Technology. He was brought to Irving ISD to help lead their 1-to-1 laptop initiative. Mr. Farsaii has 28 years in public education and

a strong background in both computer programing and instructional technology integration. He is currently working on his doctorate in Computer Science and Information Systems at PACE University in New York.

Deanna HarrellDirector of Advanced Academics

Mrs. Harrell has served Coppell ISD as a classroom teacher, assistant elementary principal, associate principal for CHS and most recently as Director of New Tech High @ Coppell. Her Master’s degree is in Reading with a Gifted Endorsement. Mrs.

Harrell’s extensive K-12 experience and commitment to transforming education makes her a great fit for her new role.

Angie HuxCurriculum Director and Asst. Principal at Pinkerton

Angie Hux has 20 years of experience in public education with 8 years in administration. She has previously served Coppell ISD as an assistant principal at Denton Creek Elementary, CMS East and Valley Ranch Elementary. She has had a wide-range

of experiences including her work with Project Based Learning, Dual Language Immersion, and BEAM. She is ready to take on her dual role as a member of the Curriculum Department and the Assistant Principal at Pinkerton.

Mary KemperDirector of K-12 Mathematics

Mary Kemper received her Master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction from Texas A&M University. Most recently, she served as the Secondary Mathematics Coach and Algebra 2 Teacher at Coppell High School. Prior to coming to Coppell, Mrs.

Kemper was the Middle School and High School Mathematics Curriculum Specialist in Pearland ISD. Mrs. Kemper is committed to leading the district in strengthening mathematics instruction K - 12.

Debbie YoungsDirector of Assessment

Having been employed in CISD since 1996, Debbie Youngs has a widespread knowledge of our district. She has been an elementary classroom teacher, ESL teacher, elementary assistant principal and most recently served a dual role as

both the assistant principal at Pinkerton Elementary and as a member of the CISD Curriculum Department. Ms. Youngs has worked extensively in the area of formative and summative assessment and will be a strong resource to campus administrators and teachers as our district continues to transition to the new state accountability system.

CISD has hired over165 new employees this summer

iPads at CHSThis fall, the Coppell Independent School District will take a big transformational step as it makes a true shift to 21st century learning and the goal of student centered schools and future ready students. As a tool to support transformation, Coppell ISD will issue an iPad to every learner at Coppell High School during schedule pick-up this August. The iPad initiative, “CG³” (Cowboys: Get Inspired, Go Innovate and Gain Purpose), is designed to engage and empower learners to actualize the CISD mission of personal success, dynamic leadership, and global citizenship.

Why? iPads...• when integrated into the daily learning experience, support

essential college and career readiness skills including: complex communication, media literacy, and self-directed learning.

• serve as a tool for consumption and creativity.• enable 24/7 flexibility for learners.• allow learners to conduct research and demonstrate their knowledge

of course content.• provide a means for personalized learning.• deliver immediate feedback on learners’ progress of skills and content

mastery.• house a wide variety of apps and capabilities that provide an

interactive engaging learning environment.

Support for EducatorsCHS educators are primed for this technology-rich approach to learning – one that encourages them to design creative lessons that facilitate student engagement for deeper learning. Educators will now be able to meet their “digital natives” where they are to foster learning that mirrors a real world workplace in which all participants have equal access to the technological tools necessary to complete their work and apply their knowledge. Learners will quickly realize their iPad is not just for entertainment, but a tool for efficiency and productivity.

In December 2012, training began when iPads were issued to every educator at Coppell High School for their professional use. The CHS technology integration specialists (iTeam) and the district curriculum department offered training on apps that best support learning and how to design instruction differently leveraging this new tool.

According to CISD’s Executive Director of Leading and Learning, Tabitha Branum, “This is an exciting mind shift for our educators. We have spent the past ten months laying the groundwork for this digital transformation, and CISD has dedicated the necessary resources to ensure educators are well-prepared to lead the effort and help guide our learners on this new journey.”

Migrating Toward Digital ResourcesWhile not every subject-area textbook is offered digitally (such as Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate) - science, social studies, and some grade level English/language arts texts are available and will be used at CHS as the migration to digital resources continues.

Digital books allow for anytime/anywhere use, improved accuracy of information due to more frequent updates, offer access to multiple resources through a single device (the iPad), and ensure a higher degree of technical proficiency in the transition from high school to college or career than traditional textbooks. A total of 18 online courses are available for instructional use this fall through iTunes University – five of which were created and piloted by core educators from Coppell High School.

The Process Each iPad will be the learner’s personal device to check-out at the beginning of the year and turn-in at the end of the year – similar to the process in place for textbooks. A User Handbook will be included in every student registration packet available during schedule pick-up and will also be posted online this summer. Learners will be able to select their own case, choose whether or not to have a keyboard, and receive insurance options available for parents to purchase.

Every learner will receive a device that comes pre-loaded with over 30 apps to support consumption, curation, and creativity. As a part of their first week at school, learners will participate in workshops that demonstrate the most effective apps for topics such as: creating presentations; becoming better organized; and improving study skills.

Support for Learners and ParentsA technical hub or “juice bar” will be maintained in the Media Center where CHS librarians, iTeam and technology department members will offer technical support to learners in using of the iPad. Learners will be able to re-charge, make replacement requests, and get the technical support they need to be successful.

Advisory teams (one for learners and one for educators) will meet with Principal Jasso and Mrs. Branum to address any concerns, evaluate the effectiveness of the existing apps, and make recommendations for adding any new apps.

Parent meetings and workshops (on site and virtual) will be held to address iPad acceptable use, insurance options (may be purchased at a greatly reduced rate), policies, security, monitoring, and learning implications.

What’s Next?A similar iPad program will be piloted this fall for a select group of elementary fourth and fifth grade learners. Earlier this year, every elementary campus was given the opportunity to write a grant application for consideration in the program. Cottonwood Creek and Wilson were selected, and the district will be using these two sites to inform decisions for future elementary expansion. One difference between the elementary and secondary iPad programs is in the distribution. Unlike the high school learners, elementary learners will not checkout the iPads – they will be for classroom use only.

Attendance

Parents and students, please remember that it is vital to be on time and in atten-dance each and every day. Not only do students miss valuable instruction time and assignments when they are absent or late, but the rest of the class’ learning environment can be affected.

The Texas Education code requires students to attend school at least 90 percent of the school days class is of-fered. This means there is no differenti-ation between excused and unexcused absences in order to receive credit or for grade promotion. Furthermore, truancy charges may be filed on both the student and parents if a student is unexcused for 3 or more days or parts of days within a four-week period, or 10 or more days within a 6-month period.

Additionally, it costs Coppell ISD $37.23 per student in state funding for every day a student is absent. This means that if nearly 1,500 students on a single day are absent across grades K-12 district-wide, Coppell could lose enough state funding to equal one teacher’s salary. Please join Coppell ISD in encouraging good attendance during scheduled class days.

The CISD Transportation Department offers two types of bus service for the students of Coppell ISD. • The Pay to Ride service enables students who live within two miles

of their school to ride the bus for a fee. Not all neighborhoods qualify for the Pay to Ride service. Call 214.496.8082 to find out if your ad-dress qualifies.

Pay to Ride Semester Rates:1st child-$150.00 2nd child-$120.00 3rd child-$95.00

• Those students who live farther than two miles from school may ride the Regular Bus service at no cost.

Bus PassesAll students Pre-K – 12th grade who ride a school bus will need to register and get a photo identification card also known as a Bus Pass (special education students are exempt from the photo ID). Bus passes are required to ride the bus on the first day of school. All students must renew their photo ID for each school year.

Registration will be August 12-23 at the Coppell ISD Service Center, 1303 Wrangler Circle (located behind Coppell Middle School West). For more information, call 214.496.8082. STUDENT MUST BE PRESENT FOR THE PHOTO ID.

Back-to-School

The Coppell Education Foundation is proud to be the leading nonprofit organization in our community helping bridge the educational funding gap our schools are challenged by each and every day. We do this meaningful work by generating and distributing resources in the form of grants that are educating, motivating and innovating.

Since 2000, the Coppell Education Foundation has made educational investments totaling nearly $800,000 to teachers and students in classrooms in the Coppell Independent School District.

Fundraising opportunities include the annual drive “Red & Black Attack” in the fall and the “Run to Fund” in the spring. The Annual Student/Teacher Academic Banquet is hosted by the Coppell Education Foundation and recognizes the Top 5% Graduates form Coppell High School and New Tech High @ Coppell as well as Campus “Teachers of the Year.”

The Coppell Education Foundation operates as a separate 501(C) (3) nonprofit organization, so all donations remain in Coppell ISD.

Update Your Portal Account

Don’t forget to update your child’s portal account before Schedule Pick-up/Meet the Teacher night. (Schedules will not be released until the portal account has been updated.) To ensure safety and accuracy, guardians need to verify or make

corrections to all contact information and forms (medical, disclosure/picture information, etc.) by going to

https://parent.coppellisd.com and completing the screens in the student registration module. All screens must be reviewed and the captcha completed before the account is updated. An updated account is indicated by a green anext to the child’s name.

CISD Communications

Coppell ISD is committed to providing relevant, important and timely information to parents. Last spring, CISD began using ParentLink as a communications tool. Throughout the year, parents should expect the following district and campus communications through ParentLink:• Daily attendance calls and email for unexcused absences• Phone call and email when a lunch account balance falls

below zero• Email notification when library books are overdue• Emergency notifications (including school closing) sent to

all guardian phone numbers and emails listed in the parent portal

• General email and phone communications updating parents on important information and events

Enrollment Requirements

You must be a legitimate resident within the Coppell ISD boundaries to enroll a student in any CISD school. All students must provide the required documents in order to view his/her teacher assignment and/or class schedule. Immunization Requirements

Immunizations are an important part of protecting your child’s, your family’s, and your community’s health, and state law requires students in Texas schools to be immunized against certain vaccine-preventable diseases. We understand that it can be difficult to get your child vaccinated before the school year begins. We would like to stress the importance of getting these required vaccines at the earliest possible time to avoid the back-to-school immunization rush. Don’t forget that students must have proper documentation including the dates of immunization to pick up schedules and attend school. Coppell ISD strives to employ the most qualified applicants; therefore, certified applicants and registered nurses will be considered first for an invitation to any upcoming orientations. Coppell ISD monitors staffing needs throughout the year and

hires substitutes as needed.

the Substitute Specialist will contact you with an invitation to the required orientation.

3. Applicants selected as substitute candidates are also required to be fingerprinted in accordance with Senate Bill 9. The fingerprinting cost varies and is dependent on TEA guidelines and certification levels.

4. Substitute candidates must complete the Region 10 Education Service Center Substitute Teacher Training Program. Program information is given when a candidate is invited to attend orientation.
