When your business is the first one that comes to mind as a place to find a product or service, you have achieved what is called “top-of-mind awareness”. Top-of-mind awareness is built and reinforced through repetition.
Research shows that 85% of your customers could live or work within a five-mile radius of your business*. So, when driving to and from work, school and shopping, they could pass your location some 50 to 60 times a month which means your sign should be designed so that it commands their attention every time they pass.

For example, there is a Volvo dealership who always includes its address in its radio ads, followed by the phrase “under the big blue Volvo sign”. When people see the big blue Volvo sign they remember the commercial.
Additionally, the name of your business, your logo, company colours, catch phrase, etc., should be consistent on your sign, your letterhead, business cards, print ads and website.
All these coordinated efforts build recall and recognition and help brand your business in the mind of the consumer.
In this issue amongst other things we are showcasing this with West Borough Primary School with whom we recently worked with to rebrand and create some exciting new signage and graphics.

The Challenge
Operating since 1915, this year West Borough Primary School is celebrating its 100th anniversary and an Ofsted ‘Outstanding in early years’, just two of many achievements they have accomplished.
They are very proud of who they are and what they have achieved with an aspiration to five core values: “Equality, Responsibility, Respect, Resilience, Challenge.” Recent ly Head Teacher Ashley Crittenden approached Bison to come up with some ideas on how to display their core values around the school. Bison came recommended by another local school who were really happy with their signage.
The Process
The first step was to visit the school to get a look and feel and to be completely clear of what they were looking to achieve. “We wanted to understand why exactly the existing displays weren’t getting noticed and how we could be most effective in helping get the message across”, said Managing Director, Mark Bidewell.
The initial meeting was important as it helped Bison to:
- Get a look and feel of the school- Understand how pupils, teachers and parents use and walk round the school- Find out what they notice (and what they don’t), and- Look at the school’s exist ing branding to make sure it’s consistent and relevant.
We found out where West Borough were currently at, and gained a much
deeper understanding by visiting the school. The visit and future research showed that the logo, colours and message varied between existing signage, letterheads, school jumpers, website, etc. Nobody at the school had actually noticed this, something so many organisations and businesses innocently overlook every day. This had to be addressed before Bison embarked on any signage as otherwise it would have made the matter worse.
So this is what Bison did…
Step 1: Brand audit. We took each of the existing logos and presented them side by side to West Borough to demonstrate in a snap shot the variation. We then asked what they liked about each version so that we could simplify to one design.
Step 2: Revised, polished versions of the logo were then created and presented to the school - nothing majorly different just a ‘nip and tuck’ of something West Borough already had in place that they were proud of. Step 3: The new design was then rolled out across all items Bison felt would benefit the school to achieve the desired result including signage, impact walls and business stationery. Ultimately the goal was to standardise the schools identity, to make it clean and consistent.
Step 4: The ideas were then presented to the school, this included a clear itinerary, a schedule of works and discount based on design, production and installation all at once.

A good brand and signage will help motivate staff and give them a belonging to something they are proud to be part of. Signage is the least expensive but most effective form of advertising. A good brand and signage is an investment that will give a return many times over. Signage is so important that without it you may not get a loan for your business. KCC had a tight deadline to meet needing to mail some brochures out to all the schools before half-term. Their internal print department could not meet the deadline so they approached Bison.
