Dear Parents, Carers and Students, March 5th, 2020
Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all Catholic schools in the
Archdiocese of Melbourne to celebrate their Catholic identity, the pivotal
role they play within their local community as well as the strength of the
sector. Catholic Education Week will run from Sunday 15 March 2020 to
Sunday 22 March 2020. The theme is 'The future is listening'. Each year
at Our Lady’s we acknowledge the week by participating in the Creative
Arts Exhibition. We nominate some exceptional pieces of art produced
by our students and wait to see which pieces will be showcased at the
Exhibition. This year due to the diligence and exceptional talent of our
Visual Arts Teacher- Sarah Mizzi all five pieces entered were selected: a
great feat for our students and teachers. Congratulations to all involved.
The Creative Arts Exhibition is located at the Catholic Leadership Centre:
576 Victoria Parade, East Melbourne VIC 3002.The exhibition is open for
viewing by families on Saturday 21st March : 12.00pm-4.00pm.

Student Residential Address Information: Each year the current residential address of the child is sent to the
Australian Government by the school. The information sent will be used by the Australian Government to
assess school communities’ capacity to contribute towards the recurrent costs of schooling in order to move
towards a fairer, needs based funding model for non-government schools. Please ensure that your address
and contact details are up to date. They can easily be accessed via the COMPASS app. I have attached further
information regarding this collection later in the newsletter.
Birthday wishes to all these children who celebrate their birthday this
week: Duraid 5E, Queen 5N, Hunter 2S, Eljay 3T, Daniella 6G, Isla 5N,
Samantha 1M, Majd 2L, Jake 1G, Steven 4C, Xavier 3W, Zaara Prep C,
Dhanika 2L, Mariel 3B…………HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL!
Unfortunately, due to the inclement weather, tonight’s Prep/Buddy Picnic has
been cancelled. The students will be gathering together on Friday afternoon after
the 2.40pm assembly. Parents are welcome to attend and maybe learn the special
‘buddy handshake’.
Just a reminder about parking and driving around and near the school - issues raised
today were: parking on the grass verge, backing out into the traffic, trying to crash
through our boom gate !!! and queuing up and parking at the boom gate !!!, leaving
their car while they drop off their kids into the school grounds. Stopping in the middle
of the road and parking in ‘No Parking’ areas. The misdemeanours go on- Council have
been notified and fines will be issued. Student safety is our first priority.
Enjoy the long weekend and see you all on Tuesday,
Paul McEntee
Principal
From the Sports Desk ………………….. Soccer came to Our Lady’s this week and our prep students displayed their foot skills and talents
with the round ball.

Internet Safety Advice:
This Week’s Top Tip for Parents
Our children are learning about being ‘Smart and Safe Online’
The thoughts of what your child might come across online can be worrying.
Check out our top internet safety advice to make sure going online is a positive experience for you and your
child.
Tip Number 4:
Talk about the risks associated with meeting online “friends” in person
For safety and to avoid unpleasant experiences, it is important that children do not meet strangers they have
met online without being accompanied by an adult you trust. In any case, the child should always have their
parents’ approval first. Be aware that some gaming sites allow communication with strangers. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Thank you to all the Parents and CarersThank you to all the Parents and CarersThank you to all the Parents and CarersThank you to all the Parents and Carers
for taking the time to attend our Parent Helper Meeting in preparation for a positive partnership with us this year.
Parents who attended had an opportunity to understand the Child Safety Policy and Code of
Conduct as these are important components in the operation of our school. They also had an opportunity to learn some basic reading strategies and gain some ideas about how to best support our children. Please be aware that you must attend a Parent Helper Meeting to support all aspects of our school: classroom, excursion, special events, canteen, gardening, laminating, crafts and/or general cleaning.
An evening Parent Helper Meeting will be held on Tuesday 24th March from 6-7pm in the school library.
Register through COMPASS.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
During the season of Lent in our classrooms we will be collecting money for Caritas Australia Aid Projects.
Project compassion helps people around the world in many different ways. Please continue to send some
spare coins/notes with your child to place in the Project Compassion donation box. Last year we raised
$4,600- Our goal this year is to raise $6000. If everyone at the school donates $10 the whole Lenten season
that would make us meet our goal! Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

GOSPEL CHALLENGE
Sunday - 8 March 2020
Gospel: Mt 17:1-9----Jesus is transfigured before Peter, James, and John
Gospel focus – A new vision
Peter sees the appearance of Elijah and Moses as a confirmation that Jesus has come to continue the work of
the great prophets of the past. Rather than placing Jesus in the old tradition of the prophets, the appearance
of Elijah and Moses, together with the voice of God, is to endorse the new direction that Jesus’ ministry is
taking. Jesus’ new vision for the world is informed by the relationships forged between God and the prophets
of the past, but it is a vision of a completely different way of relating to God: a much more personal
relationship that calls us to respond from the heart to those around us.
Thanks to everyone who came along to share the Ash Wednesday
Mass with our whole school. We wish you a blessed Lenten journey!
Sustainability Corner Did you know you can plant trees while never
getting off your couch?
Last Friday’s whole school focus on Clean Up Australia day was a great success, with sparkling clean school grounds and fence line after a short amount of time. This is a
great example of how little actions or changes, taken on by many, can have an enormous impact.
Another little change everyone can make is as simple as changing your search engine on your phone or home computer. Search engines such as Google produce a lot of money through advertising. Ecosia is one search engine that uses its advertising money for good. The company plants trees in various countries around the world,
you can actually see how many searches you have completed and how many trees you have planted.
Just search for Ecosia, https://www.ecosia.org/, and add it as an extension in your browser. Every time you search for something, you could be planting a tree
somewhere!
