    Chapter 1

    Introduction

    1.1 Overview

    This manual describes the technical characteristics, applications, installation, and operation of the main link interface modules for the Kilomux-2100 TDM multiplexer, listed in Table 1-1. The same functionality is available as a main link interface option for the Kilomux-2104 multiplexer.

    Table 1-1 also lists the interface standard supported by each module, the type of main link connector provided on the module front panel, and the supported data rates.

    Data rates marked with an asterisk (*) are supported by Kilomux-2100/2104 units with KCL.2 software version 3.10 or higher.

    In addition to the main link interface modules listed in Table 1-1, additional main link modules are available. The other modules are covered by separate Installation and Operation manuals.

    In this manual, the generic name KML is used when the information is applicable to all the module types listed above, and to the corresponding type of Kilomux main link interface option. When the information is applicable only to specific modules/interface options, the complete module designation is used.

    Application

    The basic use of these modules is to enable the connection of Kilomux-2100/2104 units by means of a modem link, a digital multiplexer channel, or other type of digital link. A typical system configuration is shown in Figure 1-1.

    Kilomux-2100 systems can also be equipped with two KML modules. A KML module can be installed either alone in a Kilomux-2100 enclosure, or together with another main link interface module. When installed together with a KML module of the same or another type, it is possible to use most of the main link operating modes offered by the Kilomux-2100 system, for example, dual-link operation, redundancy, and priority bumping.

    Main link modules for the Kilomux-2100 units are delivered as separate modules. In Kilomux-2104 units, the main link is incorporated into one subsystem with power supply and common logic.

    1.3 Functional Description

    Timing Modes

    The KML modules support flexible system timing options:

    With KML.1/N, KML.2/N, KML.3/N and KML.4/N modules, three main link timing modes are available: DTE, External DCE, and DCE.

    With KML.5/N modules, two main link timing modes are available: internal (INT) and loopback (LBT).

    The Kilomux-2100/2104 allows the user to select a preferred timing reference source (main, or master, source), and a fallback mode for use in case the main source failed. If both the main and fallback sources fail, the Kilomux-2100/2104 switches to an internal oscillator.

    The main characteristics of the timing mode supported by each module are explained in the following sections.

    Timing Modes Supported by KML.1/N, KML.2/N, KML.3/N, and KML.4/N Modules

    DTE Timing both the receive and transmit paths of the Kilomux-2100/2104 unit use clock signals received from the external equipment, e.g., the modem serving the main link.

    DTE timing is used to lock the timing of the local Kilomux-2100/2104 unit to the remote unit timing. Another important application is to lock the timing of two Kilomux-2100 units, connected through a digital data network, to the master clock of the network.

    External DCE Timing the Kilomux-2100/2104 provides the transmit path timing for the external equipment, and accepts an external receive clock signal for the receive path.

    The source of the Kilomux-2100/2104 transmit clock can be either an internal crystal oscillator, located in the KML module, which has an accuracy of 50 ppm, or an external source (the transmit clock of a channel of one of the data modules located in the unit). The desired channel, which is selected by the user via the CLK_MASTER parameter (under DEF SYS), must operate in the DTE2 timing mode. The DTE2 timing is relevant for the data modules only.

    The external DCE timing mode is useful when one or more of the Kilomux-2100/2104 channels are connected to a data network, or to a multiplexer channel.

    DCE Timing the Kilomux-2100/2104 provides both the transmit and receive clock signals to the equipment to which it is connected. The timing reference source of the transmit timing signals can be selected as for the external DCE mode. The connected equipment must then use the DTE timing mode.

    When the timing mode is DTE or External DCE, buffers are inserted in the main link signal paths, to absorb the expected jitter and timing instabilities. Normal buffer size is 8 bits; for operation over satellite links, the receive buffer size can be increased to 256 bits.

    Timing Modes Supported by the KML.5/N Module

    Internal Timing the internal timing source is an internal crystal oscillator located on the KML.5/N module. The internal timing mode can be used in point-to-point links such as shown in Figure 1-1, or in independent networks. In any link, only one Kilomux-2100/2104 can use internal timing: the other Kilomux-2100/2104 must use loopback (LBT) timing to ensure synchronization. In this way, the Kilomux-2100/2104 operating with internal timing is the source of the master clock and determines the timing of all the other units.

    Loopback Timing with loopback timing, the main link transmit clock of the Kilomux-2100/2104 is locked to the recovered receive clock, derived from the network timing. This mode is used in point-to-point links when the remote unit operates in the internal timing mode, or when the main link is connected to a network that provides a master clock.

    Management

    The operation of the KML modules can be controlled by the operator from a supervision terminal connected to the Kilomux-2100/2104.

    The operator can monitor the operation of each main link interface module by means of front-panel indicators that indicate module status, activity on the receive and the transmit paths of the main link, and local and remote system synchronization status.

    The main link interface module stores alarms detected during its operation into its alarms buffer.

    The buffer can store the following types of alarm events: local loss of synchronization, remote loss of synchronization, loss of signal, out-of-service, out-of-frame, idle sequence, and loopbacks. These alarms can also be read by a supervision terminal.

    Diagnostics and Maintenance Functions

    The KML modules perform self-test upon power-up. Additional testing and diagnostic functions can be performed by the operator from a supervision terminal. The testing capabilities include local main link loopback (where the main link transmit signal is looped back to the input of the main link receive path), and remote main link (loopback toward the remote Kilomux-2100/2104.

    In addition, main link modem loopbacks (designated loop 2 and loop 3 by ITU-T Rec. V.54) are available to check the connections between the KML.1/N, KML.2/N or KML.3/N module and the modem serving the main link. Usually, these loops are activated after the remote main link loop fails, but both the local and the remote Kilomux-2100/2104 units successfully pass the local main link loops.

    When loop 3 is activated on a modem that supports this function, the Kilomux-2100/2104 transmit signal is returned by the local modem on the receive path.

    When loop 2 is activated on a modem on a modem that supports this function, the remote modem returns the receive signal toward the local modem, therefore, the local Kilomux-2100/2104 transmit signal is returned to the receive path.

    Chapter 2

    Installation and Operation This chapter provides installation instructions for the KML modules. The information presented in this chapter supplements the general Kilomux installation, configuration and operation instructions contained in the Kilomux Installation and Operation manual.

    The KML modules contain components sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). To prevent ESD damage, always hold the module by its sides, and do not touch the module components or connectors.

    2.1 Installing KML Modules

    The KML modules do not contain any userconfigurable internal jumpers.

    To install the KML modules: 1. Insert a main link module into assigned I/O slot of the Kilomux enclosure.

    The module starts operating as soon as it is plugged into an operating enclosure.

    2. Connect the cables to the appropriate main link connector.

    2.2 Normal Indications

    The modules include the standard KML module indicators that are visible through the Kilomux-2100/2104 front panel.

    During normal operation the ON LINE indicator of the active module must be ON. The TX and RX indicators light in accordance with the activity on the main link.

    Chapter 3

    Configuration This section provides instructions for the configuration of the KML.1-5/N modules, using a supervision terminal. The instructions appearing in this section assume that you are familiar with the operation and capabilities of the supervision terminal.

    Before starting the configuration procedure, obtain the list of prescribed parameters from the system administrator.

    3.1 Configuration Instructions

    If the supervision terminal is not yet connected to the Kilomux system, connect the terminal and start a configuration session in accordance with the instructions in Chapter 4 of the Kilomux system manual.

    Configuration of the KML module is performed by means of DEF ML or DEF ML B command, refer to Kilomux-2100/2104 Installation and Operation manual for detailed description of the configuration procedure. Refer to Table 3-1 for the description of the module parameters and their values.

    To configure the KML module: 1. Type:

    DEF ML or DEF ML B 2. Assign the appropriate values to the module parameters (see Table 3-1).

    3.2 Module Parameters

    Table 3-1 explains the KML module parameters that can be configured. The table also lists the parameter values included in the Kilomux-2100/2104 default configuration. The selected parameter values are used by both KML modules that may be installed in a Kilomux-2100 enclosure.

    The DWLD column indicates whether a parameter can be downloaded from the master to the slave when downloading is enabled (Kilomux-2000/2004 units only).

    Troubleshooting and Diagnostics

    4.1 Alarm Messages

    The KML modules generate the general messages of a main link module, which are listed in the Kilomux-2100/2104 Operation and Installation manual.

    4.2 Diagnostics

    The standard set of test loops for main link modules is described in the Kilomux-2100/2104 Operation and Installation manual. This set includes the local main link loop, the remote main link loop, the local main link modem loop 3, and the remote main link modem loop 2.

    Main Link Loops

    The Kilomux supports two types of main link loops:

    Test loops activated on the KML modules. These loops provide information on the functioning of the KML modules. However, since the loops are performed at the interface between the Kilomux unit and the other system elements, these loops also provide information on the functioning of the complete unit.

    Test loops activated on the modem serving the main link, provided the modem supports ITU-T Rec. V.54 loops. These loops provide information on the transmission equipment that provides the connection between the two Kilomux units.

    The following explains the main link loops, describes the front panel indications that are relevant to the interpretation of the test results, and in addition provide a recommended testing sequence that allows the identification of the general location of a fault.

    Local Main Link Loop

    Always perform a local main link loop on each of the two Kilomux units.

    Local Main Link Loop - Signal Path

    When a local loop is activated on a KML module, the main link transmit signal is returned to the input of the main link receive path at a point just before the line interface. In order to provide a keep-alive signal to the transmission equipment serving the link while the loop is activated, the line interface also transmits the signal to the line. The loop signal path is shown in Figure 4-1.

    Do not set up a local loop in a remote Kilomux with inband management. Doing so could cause the main link connection to be lost.

    Remote Main Link Loop

    As a rule, connect the remote main link loop only if both Kilomuxes pass the local main link loop test successfully.

    Remote Main Link Loop Signal Path

    The remote loop is connected on the local Kilomux unit, i.e., the local KML module returns the received signal toward the remote Kilomux. The loop signal path is shown in Figure 4-2.

    and the LOCAL SYNC LOSS indicator of the remote Kilomux unit must be Off.

    If there is a problem, trace the fault by checking the indications in the order given below:

    1. If the TXD indicator of the remote Kilomux unit does not light, the fault occurred in the remote Kilomux unit: check by performing a local main link loop on the remote unit.

    2. If the TXD indicator of the remote Kilomux unit lights but the RXD indicator of the local Kilomux unit does not light, probably there is a problem in the transmit path to the local unit. There is however a low probability that the fault occurred in the local or remote Kilomux units: check by performing local main link loops.

    3. If the RXD indicator of the local Kilomux unit lights, but its TXD indicator is Off, the local Kilomux unit is defective.

    4. If the TXD indicator of the local Kilomux unit lights but the remote RXD indicator is Off, probably there is a problem in the transmit path to the remote unit. There is however a low probability that the fault occurred in the remote Kilomux unit: check by performing a local main link loop on the remote unit.

    5. If the RXD indicator of the remote Kilomux unit lights, but its LOCAL SYNC LOSS indicator lights, a fault is present. The fault is in the remote Kilomux: check by performing a local main link loop.

    Local Main Link Modem Loop - Loop 3

    The main purpose of the main link modem loop 3 is to check the connections between the KML module and the local modem. Usually, this loop is activated after the remote main link loop fails but both the local and the remote Kilomux units successfully pass the local main link loops. If this loop is successful, the next loop to be performed is the remote main link modem loop, loop 2.

    Therefore, as a rule, perform loop 3 only after successfully performing a local main link loop on the local Kilomux unit.

    Main Link Loop 3 Signal Path

    When loop 3 is activated on a modem that supports this function, the Kilomux transmit signal is returned by the local modem on the receive path. The loop signal path is shown in Figure 4-3.

    A.1 KML.1/N Module
