Creative Style for heightened photographic expression

Soft Skin Effect offers a new way to ob-tain eye-catching portraits and group photos. Employing Sony’s renowned Face Detection technology, this feature identifies distinctive facial charac-teristics, then reduces or completely removes fine wrinkles and freckles. The effect can be applied simultaneously to as many as eight faces per photo, and can be adjusted in three levels: Low, Mid and High.

Capture all the splendor of a majestic landscape or electric cityscape with Sweep Panorama. Just gently sweep the camera in a smooth arc while shooting, either side-to-side or up/down. NEX-5N takes a series of shots then stitches them together into a seamless, high-resolution panoramic photo ready for large-format printing or playback on HDTV. And now there’s 3D Sweep Panorama, which produces dynamic 3D panoramas for playback on 3D-compatible HDTVs.

Discover how easy it is to produce night shots with all the vibrancy of the origi-nal scene. In Hand-held Twilight mode, NEX-5N fires off six photos at high speed and composites them to create one low-noise photo. Thanks to the excellent performance of the Exmor sensor and BIONZ image processing, your night shots will sparkle with markedly reduced graininess and noise without the need for a tripod.

Fully leverage Sony’s image analysis and compositing technologies with Anti Motion Blur mode. After taking six shots at high speed, NEX-5N aligns and combines them into a single photo. This mode is ideal when long shutter speeds result in blurry photos, such as when shooting in dimly lit settings or at telephoto focal lengths. It also improves portraits by eliminating the need for flash.

Delight in the remarkable depth and realism that Auto HDR mode lends photos. This mode is ideal for capturing dramatically lit scenes that are often difficult to record when shooting conventionally due to great variances in light and shadow. NEX-5N takes three shots at different exposures — one each for highlights, mid tones and shadows — then digitally combines them into one photo, which is saved along with the mid-tone exposure. For enhanced creative control over a wide range of lighting situations, you can set the HDR exposure range to cover six steps, from 1 EV to 6 EV.

Easily handle tricky lighting like backlit subjects with D-Range Optimizer (DRO). Like Auto HDR, this intelligent feature helps capture high-contrast scenes in photos that closely resemble the range of lighting as perceived by the human eye. But unlike Auto HDR, DRO can also be used for shooting moving subjects and high-speed continuous shooting. Set it to Auto and let NEX-5N decide the appropriate optimization or manually select from five levels.

Note: Sweep Panorama typically produces best results when shooting at wide-angle focal lengths.

Even when you’ve maxed out the reach of your telephoto zoom lens, you can still get closer with Precision Digital Zoom. Delivering up to 10x magnifica-tion of the central area of the frame, this convenient feature works with any E-mount or A-mount lens, including fixed-focal length lenses.

Take the hassle out of focusing manu-ally with MF Assist. This function en-larges the portion of the composition on which focus is being performed, making it a snap to obtain razor-sharp focus. Choose from two magnifica-tions — 4.8x or 9.5x — depending on the subject. MF Assist is a great aid for macro photography or when shooting at large apertures.

Control the color of photos and mov-ies by adjusting white balance. Add a charming warmth to a candlelit mo-ment, pump up the violet in a brilliant sunset, or inject a soothing blue calm to a mountain lake. Nine presets, two cus-tom settings and a color temperature scale help you choose the proper white balance. You can also select Auto for lifelike colors no matter what the scene.

Advanced 1200-zone metering deliv-ers precise exposures, deftly handling the most difficult lighting situations with ease. Employing a sophisticated scene analysis algorithm and BIONZ image processing, the system evaluates light levels and color distribution, then calcu-lates exposure to suit each image. And for easier metering, you can assign the AE lock function to a custom key.

Dust may enter the camera when changing lenses, which can impair image quality. To solve this, NEX-5N has a new anti-dust system that keeps dust off the optical filter in front of the image sensor. When the camera is turned off, the filter vibrates ultrasonically to shake off dust, resulting in reduced spots on images.

NEX-5N really shines with the included external flash. Simply attach it to Smart Accessory Terminal 2, flip up the head and you’re ready to go. It has a Guide Number of 7 (ISO 100/meters) and an angle-of-view that provides coverage for a 16 mm lens. Power is supplied by the camera so there’s no need for batteries.

Obtain in-camera shooting advice with Shooting Tips. Both beginners and advanced users can benefit greatly from these useful pointers. And with Help Guide Display, which shows short explanations as you navigate through menus, you’ll be able to enjoy NEX-5N’s great features without having to tote the manual.
