UPDATE FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

~ Colin Bloor, President ~

Strategic Fund-Raising Plan. At

the September meeting of the Board

of Directors, a comprehensive 1998-

99 Strategic Fund-Raising Plan was

adopted. This plan was developed

over the summer months, in

consultation with GERRY BUCKLEY

of Buckley Consulting. Extensive

interviews with Officers, Board

members, Staff, key volunteers,

and present and past donors were

conducted as a foundation for

devising this prospective plan.

As announced at our August retreat,

our fund-raising goal for 1998-99 is

$58,500, which is a 25% increase

over last year’s fund-raising efforts.

Certainly this is a challenge, and the

Board is enthusiastically confident

that we will succeed in meeting this

test.

To show its commitment to the

success of this new effort, the Board

accepted the challenge that from its

membership alone we will raise

10% of this goal -- namely $5,850.

To date, contributions received,

together with pledges received from

Board members, show that the

Board has attained nearly 70% of its

goal.

The Strategic Fund-Raising Plan

has eight specific goals which

will provide a strong foundation

upon which we can expand fund-

raising efforts in future years, to

ensure the continuing success of

our Association and ensembles.

These goals include:

(1) establishment of a permanent

Development Committee;

(2) conducting an annual Board

gift campaign;

(3) providing giving opportunities

to members of the ensembles;

(4) creation and launch of a

Corporate Gifts Program;

(5) conduct new members and

membership renewal campaign;

(6) increase proposal submission to

at least five new foundations;

(7) establish an Honorary Board –

a “Maestros’ Council”; and

(8) produce an annual appeal for

bequests and planned gifts.

Details of the Strategic Fund-

Raising Plan are available through

the Association Office for any

interested members of our

Association. Please contact either

COLIN BLOOR, 534-4324, or BILL

MORGAN, 534-4637, to obtain

copies.

Development Committee. This is

an ambitious Plan, and we are very

enthusiastic about taking the

Association in this exciting new

direction. Implementation of the plan

will involve many volunteers. New

Board member JOE BICKNELL has

volunteered to chair the newly formed

Development Committee.

Clearly, the initial planning stage will

require several subcommittees of

volunteers to address specific tasks

and targets. Thus, we do need your

help. If anyone is interested in

actively participating in these efforts,

or if you have friends with unique

talents that would add to these efforts,

please let us know. Again, either Bill

or I will be most happy to talk with

you in greater detail as to what

specific tasks are most appealing to

you.

Revamped Season Planning. The

Board is expected to vote on the

conductors’ proposal to revamp our

season planning at its November

meeting. Last month we asked for

your input into the process.

There is still time, as well as a number

of channels through which you may

express your ideas. Each ensemble

has three members on the Board:

from the Orchestra -- JEFF NEVIN,

NANCY SWANBERG, and TED TSAI;

from the Chorus -- JAY SACKS, SUE

DRAMM, and COLIN BLOOR.

Any of them would be happy to hear

your responses and bring them to the

Board. You can also speak directly

to HARVEY SOLLBERGER or DAVID

CHASE (both of whom encourage this

contact). Or, you can talk with ERIC

BROMBERGER, Chair of the Music

Committee.

“ORCHESTRATIONS” ~ Susan Ung, Orchestra Manager ~ ~ Ted Bietz, Orchestra President ~

Orchestra Growth. We are happy to report an overwhelming interest in auditions this year -- we‟ve added something like forty new members, in fact -- resulting in a large group of very talented artists. Our audiences will undoubtedly notice, in particular, an increase in the number of violins and violas. We are still searching for more cellos and basses, however, to balance things out a little more. Any help we can get by word of mouth via members of the ensembles and the Board will be most appreciated.

Orchestra Advisory Committee. The OAC has met several times in its continuing efforts to address such repeat concerns as scheduling, rehearsals, the organizational process, the direction of the Orchestra, auditions, and leadership. A comprehensive status report will appear in a future issue.

“CHORAL ARRANGEMENTS” ~ Beda Farrell ~

Time Off Before Brahms. We‟ve all been so busy working on the Latin Accent concert, and as a reward we‟ll have one Monday night off (November 2) … and then dive right into rehearsals for the Brahm‟s Requiem. Auditions. We already have a number of inquiries from students who want to audition for the Winter/Spring quarters. Recovery. Baritone PAUL BLAIR continues his recovery at the San Diego Rehabilitation Institute.

Condolences. Our sympathies are extended to the family of bass PETER

BROWN on the recent loss of his father, who passed away last week.

MUSICIANS’ AILMENTS TO GET NEEDED ATTENTION

Pull a hamstring or groin muscle and

sports medicine specialists know what to do. But what about the debilitating

pain associated with clarinet wrist,

trombone elbow, violinist neck, or pianist lower back?

The Texas Center for Music and

Medicine isn’t exactly a household

name, but soon this new, collaborative effort between the University of North

Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth and the University of North

Texas in Denton could become a

major national center for research and treatment in the emerging field

of performing arts medicine.

The program emphasizes research and prevention, with a holistic

approach, and includes the

development of different techniques for playing instruments, and perhaps

alterations in the instruments themselves.

The program’s goal is in effect to be

a ‘clearinghouse’ for musicians and

artists, addressing other such issues as voice and hearing problems in

singers, leg problems in dancers, stage fright and other psychological

problems, etc.

A survey, developed and available on

the Internet, has generated wide interest. You can check it out at

www.scs.unt.edu/surveys.msurvey/indix.html

VISIT THE ENSEMBLES IN REHEARSAL Reminder: the 7 PM, Monday ensemble rehearsals in Mandeville are „open‟ to visitors. Board members and other volunteers are encouraged to come and hear for themselves how the Chorus and the Orchestra prepare for our concerts. The Chorus meets in Room B-210, and the Orchestra in B-202.

OPERA „TANIA‟ BASED ON LIFE OF PATTY HEARST

UCSD Dept. of Music Prof. ANTHONY DAVIS‟ opera, Tania, will be performed on April 23, and recorded between April 12-30, at UCSD. Auditions (as announced at the October 19 Chorus rehearsal) were held on October 24. For more information, call 534-4830.
