Dear parents and carers The weather continues to stretch the summer into autumn, which helped make our delayed Sports Day a real success. Rather than my view of the afternoon, I thought I would share Betsy Taylor’s thoughts as one of our student representatives on the School newspaper: On Tuesday afternoon, on a very sunny day, Sports Day took place at Stowupland High School. There were a variety of events that took place, such as the 800m sprint, the 300m sprint, the 200m sprint, the 100m sprint and the relay race. Not forgetting, of course, the tug of war finals! Firstly, the 800m race took place, which was very challenging for many of the competitors. It was a nail-biting watch as the second lap generally changed everyone’s expectations! All of the sprints were great to watch throughout the various year groups. The 300m sprint was very tight; the 200m sprint brought tension to the crowd, and then the 100m sprint was fast and furious! Luckily I was able to interview some of the athletes right after their race. Here are a selection of their interviews: Jardine Hodgkins (Year 11) How did you feel coming 2nd? Congratulated, and proud. What did you think of the people who you were trying to beat? I thought the people against me were going to beat me I guess, so it was great knowing I came 2nd. Luke Simmons (Year 9) Was it difficult? Yes, harder than I thought. Where did you come? 2nd place. What was the best bit? It was really nice hearing the audience cheering and supporting us. As Betsy has so eloquently described, it was a wonderful afternoon, with the whole school participating and supporting each other. We have also been working hard this week calculating students’ academic targets for the year ahead. These are set according to prior attainment and compared with national data. We have high expectations and our targets are set accordingly. When targets are achieved students will be in the top 20% in terms of progress across the country. These targets are set as a minimum expected outcome and students are encouraged to aim and work above these levels. Students will be receiving either an end of year target (KS3) or an end of course target (KS4 and KS5) in their lessons next week. With best wishes

David Brewster

PE Stars of the Week:

Jack Boston (9AS): great passing technique in rugby Aaliyah Herman (9MDH): netball interceptions Barney Hetherington (9AL): good handling skills in passing practice Bobby Sherriff (12CC): strong start to BTEC Sport Science Charlie Smy (9AS): good footwork in rugby Sydney Webb (9KL): outstanding performance in the Y9 football match

Year 10 Boys’ Football vs Mildenhall The Year 10 boys’ football team competed in their first league match of the season. Despite losing 3-0, Mr Bartholomew and Mr Clarke felt the score line was not a fair reflection of the game. We are confident that the boys will turn things around in their next match.

Year 9 Boys’ Football vs Mildenhall The Year 9 boys’ football team comfortably won their first league match of the season 4-0. The boys controlled the majority of the match, playing some really nice football and scoring some excellent goals. There were some outstanding individual performances but Sydney Webb was awarded Man of the Match.

Fusion Dance Cub After such a long break, it has been wonderful to welcome dancers back into the lunchtime Dance Club. Over 50 students have been attending across the staggered mid-day breaks. Students have been working on a contemporary piece called ‘control’ and a fun commercial dance to a pop mashup!
