SMF MUSIC DEPT POLICY FOR PRACTICES & PERFORMANCESBy virtue of membership in a Stow-Munroe Falls High musical group, you have accepted an obligation not only

to yourself, but to the entire organization. Because it is our desire to achieve the finest possible results, attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory. It would be unrealistic, however, to assume that absences due to illness, death in the family, and other valid reasons do not occur. With this thought in mind, the following policy has been instituted to explain and define the absence policy of the music department. These guidelines have been designed to maintain the excellence of the Stow-Munroe Falls High School Band Program, and will help to ensure that membership in this group continues to be a fair, worthwhile and educationally rewarding experience for all. Furthermore, it is assumed that any student who becomes a member of the Stow-Munroe Falls High School Performing Ensembles recognizes his/her responsibility to fellow students of the organization and wishes to contribute his/her best effort at all times.

As Musical Ensembles are laboratory courses with much of the work being done during rehearsal time, the rehearsals are an important part of the class requirements and cannot be made up. Failure to participate in a rehearsal without being excused will affect the student’s Practice & Performance grade for that marking period. In the same regard, being tardy to a rehearsal represents non-participation in part of that rehearsal. This will effect the student’s practice & performance grade for that rehearsal. Absence from a special rehearsal prior to a performance could result in the student not performing at the concert.

A performance, when planned, organized, and evaluated as a culminating activity in a learning experience becomes a legitimate part of the music curriculum. The performance for the band is akin to the final exam in a class such as English, and will be treated as such. Failure to participate in a performance without being excused will severely affect the student’s final grade for that marking period, just as failure to take a final exam in the English class would affect the grade for that course.

3

Page 6: STOW-MUNROE FALLS BAND HANDBOOK 2013-14

PROCEDURES REGARDING ABSENCES:To be considered an excused absence you must do the following:1. Submit a note or email from parent or guardian with the student’s name, reason for the absence, date of

the absence, to the Director of the Ensemble.

2. Form non -medical excuses, submit the note at least THREE WEEKS PRIOR TO THE EVENT. All notes are subject to the directors approval. Excuses not submitted within this time are Excused But Late and will be penalized by loss of performance points.

* If a student misses a rehearsal or performance due to an emergency, the student should turn in a note of explanation immediately upon his/her return. An email or text to the emergency number before the event is always appreciated

Notes submitted well in advance are usually excused without hesitation.

EXCUSED ABSENCES FROM PRACTICES, PERFORMANCES OR OTHER REQUIRED ACTIVITIES: 1. Personal illness - notice by phone, text or e-mail appreciated. 2. Unavoidable family events: Weddings, a death in the family, etc......three week notice applies (if possible) 3. Emergency occurrence when transportation is not possible. - notice by phone or e-mail appreciated. 4. Direct conflicts with other school activities. This means the student is a necessary participant in the activity. Direct conflicts do not include: practices, banquets, working on behalf of an organization in which you do not belong (a sophomore working in a Senior Class Play), or attendance at optional events or activities. In the event of two performances/events scheduled at the same time, the higher level event receives precedence. Practices Practices Band Concert Game/Meet District Band Contest Sectional or District Event State Band Contest State Level event. * With sports teams, students who are starters will be excused, those who are not starters, should still attend the band performance. Any questions can we worked out between the student/coach and teacher.

5. Post-Secondary Class Conflicts that can not be resolved: three week notice applies

6. Other items at the discretion of the director of the musical ensemble.

7. Students may be asked to do additional projects or tests to make up for the absence.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES FROM PRACTICES, PERFORMANCES OR OTHER REQUIRED ACTIVITIES 1 . WORK IS NOT CONSIDERED AN EXCUSED ABSENCE - your first obligation is to your school and its classes. Employers should be notified well in advance of your obligations to both family and school events. Provide your employer a copy of your calendar to assist them in scheduling.

2. Observation or attendance at school sponsored practices, banquets, working on behalf of an organization in which you do not belong, or optional events /activities. See #4 above for more details.

3. Vacations WITHOUT PARENTS or without providing Three weeks notice for any vacation.

4. Participation in non-school activities without providing three weeks notice.

5. School Homework or Projects outside of the band. In most cases you have been given time to complete the assignment or to study. Lack of planning is not considered an excuse.

EVALUATION AND GRADING POLICY: Marching BandI. DAILY PRACTICE & PERFORMANCE: 40% of Final Grade:

Students begin the year with 100 points in this category. Unexcused absences, tardies, or cuts are subtracted from 100 points.

REHEARSALS & ACTIVITIES PERFORMANCES Unexcused absence or Cuts -10 pts Unexcused Absence or Cuts -50 Unexcused absence: Sectionals - 5 pts Excused but late: -10 to -25 Tardies - 3 pts Excused but late -3 to -5pts Discipline problems @ concerts -25-50 per incident

II. TESTS & QUIZZES: 40% of Final Grade (Written and or Playing Exams) During marching band season music will be tested from memory in front of a squad leader, section leader or director. If a student passes the piece on time, the student will receive an A (100%). The piece must be played with correct style, dynamics and articulations. The week after a piece has been performed, the highest grade that can be received is a B (85%), two weeks a C (75%), three weeks a D (65%), and four weeks an F (55%). Failure to pass a piece within six weeks after it's due will result in a 0. Students are encouraged to ATTEMPT to pass every piece. An attempt is considered a “good try” but contains too many mistakes to be considered a pass. Students may earn an ATTEMPT (50%) on a piece until the due date. Once performed, attempts are not available. ATTEMPTS may be tested for a higher grade at any times up to 6 weeks after the first performance. It is important that the students stay up to date on the testing schedule and ATTEMPT each song on time. Not attempting or passing a piece will seriously impact on the Final Testing Grade. A Marching grade is also included into the Test & Quizzes grade. Here is a sample of our grading procedure.

III. PARTICIPATION GRADES: 20% of Final GradeStudents begin the year with 100 points in this category. Participation infractions will be subtracted from 100pts.

Cooperation, interest, and enthusiasm is a must for a band to function at its best. The participation grade is based upon the student’s attitude, behavior and willingness to learn. Marching band inspection demerits will be given for uniform infractions (dirty gloves, shoes, spats, unhemmed pants, wrinkled uniforms). Each demerit subtracts 1 point from the Participation grade.

STOW-MUNROE FALLS HIGH SCHOOLBAND HONORS PROGRAM Revised for 2015

1

The goal of Band Honors is to improve musicianship and to encourage students to go beyond what the student is exposed to daily during the band period. We have developed a variety of activities from which you may choose to meet the criteria for the honors credit. Points awarded are weighted based on the time commitment and the musical impact.

Each quarter students must complete 5 honors points from the numerous categories. During the first week of each quarter, the student must complete the Band Honor Credit Point Sheet where the student will list how he/she intends to earn their points. The Point Sheet is a guideline to help the students plan their quarter. The student should list all the possible ways they will earn points. The student will complete a BAND HONORS COMPLETION FORM at the end of the quarter.

10% of the student’s grade in Band Honors or Band Honors 9 is based on completing the requirements of the class. If a student does not return the Band Honors Credit Point Sheet and/or does not complete the 5 points, they will not earn the 10%, thus lowering their final grade by one letter.

Honor Band Students may utilize “PRACTICE TAPE EXEMPTIONS” that are also used to complete their 5 honors points. However, ALL BAND HONORS STUDENTS MUST SUBMIT A “PERFORMANCE” TAPE DURING QUARTERS 3 & 4. THE ONLY EXEMPTION PERMITTED FOR THE “PERFORMANCE TAPE” WOULD BE PERFORMING A SOLO AT OMEA CONTEST.

BAND HONORS GRADING:

Band honors students will be graded in the same manner as students in Band and Band 9. The only difference is the addition of the 10% honors credit, thus altering some of the subcategory percentages. Definition for Practice & Performance, Tests, Participation, Performances and Weekly Grades can be found in the previous pages. Here is the Band Honors grading breakdown for Marching Band (1st Quarter) and Concert Bands (2nd-4th Quarters)

Concert Band Auditions will generally be held the week following the last football game of the season (Normally the first full week in November), but may be held earlier if a band is invited to perform in a music clinic or convention. All positions in bands are open each year. Everyone is expected to audition. Upperclassmen will be scheduled into a Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble. Freshman will audition for the purpose of chair placement in the Freshman Band. The 3 directors, with the assistance of outside professional musicians will hear the auditions. Students will be evaluated on the following areas:

1) 1 Scales: up to 4#’s & 4b’s plus a chromatic scale, 2) Two prepared pieces: (1 lyrical and 1 technical), & 3) Sight reading.

Musical concepts such a: correct notes, rhythms, dynamics, articulations, phrasing, technique and musicality apply. Scores will be used to determine the chair placement within each band. Students who are not satisfied with results may challenge in any band and between upperclassmen bands once they attain the first chair position.

CONCERT BAND CHALLENGES:In order to provide a way for students to practice and improve their seating position, the following system will be used. Challenges may consist of scales, band music or a separate piece, and sight-reading. There will be no challenges 2 weeks prior to a performance. The director reserves the rights to not change any part assignments until after a performance and to disallow challenges for any reason.

1. Students may challenge the person sitting directly next to them. The top chair person in one band may challenge the last chair person in a higher band. Students in Maroon and Gold bands may not challenge between bands, however first chair players in both Marron and Gold may challenge the last chair student in Wind Ensemble. In these cases it will be a three way challenge.

2. If an entire section challenges, all scores will be compared & the section will be reseated.

All auditions will take place in May.

Marching Band Percussion Auditions:Each year percussion students must audition for placement in the marching band percussion section. The audition will include a snare drum and mallet excerpt from one of the upcoming shows. Performance ability on these two areas will be used to determine positions on the snare drum, bass drum and cymbal lines and the pit (grounded percussion) area. A student who wishes to apply for quads must also play a prepared quad selection. PRIVATE LESSONS:The music department feels very strongly about the importance of private study as an integral part of developing the student’s progress on their instrument. The one-on-one relationship available in a private lesson allows for more individual attention than is permitted in a large group rehearsal. Students can concentrate on their own unique playing problems, improving on areas in which they are weak , and progress at their own rate. This individualized instruction can provide a better chance to master your own instrument. If interested in private lessons, see the Directors for assistance. Remember private lessons may be counted towards testing grades.

SCHOOL OWNED INSTRUMENTS:The school provides use of “color” instruments at no charge to the student. All school owned instruments must be signed out by a director. Students must take excellent care of school owned instruments in their possession. It is the responsibility of the student to notify the director of any damage. Students will be held responsible for any damage from abuse or negligence. Cost of repairs will rest solely with the student and his/her parents. At the end of the year all instruments must be checked in.

INSTRUMENT REQUIREMENTS:Students must have instruments in good working condition. All woodwind players should always have at least 2 spare reeds. Brass students should have valve oil, rotor oil or slide cream. All slides should function on brass instruments without any hesitation. If a student or parent would like to investigate purchasing a step-up instrument, please contact the directors and they can help guide you in your decision. Sometimes a better mouthpiece (for both brass and woodwinds) can make a large difference. Of course, a pencil is the most important item to have with you at all times. If an instrument becomes damaged always take it to a music store with an “in house” repair shop such as Central Instrument Company, Woodsy's Music or Musicians Repair Service. These stores have the fastest service and generally do the best work.

LIVE PERFORMANCE CRITIQUE: 2 points

NAME __________________________________ PROJECT ______________________________

All critiques must be typed. They should be one-and-a-half to two pages in length and include comments about selections, styles, orchestrations, and performance (tone, intonation, articulations, musicality). Use a font size no larger than 12. All critiques should have the program and or ticket stub attached.

1. Concert setting: Title, Date, Place. 2. Name of performing group(s), performers, conductors, soloists (Do not list entire group) 3. Briefly describe the concert setting (hall, performers’ dress, audience, etc.) 4. Were concert programs provided? If so please include a copy. 5. Were program notes provided? 6. What selections were performed. Include Titles of the compositions 7. What musical designs were performed (symphony, sonata, theme and variations, concerto, etc.) 8. What historical periods were represented on the program? 9. Prominent voices or instruments. 10. Characteristics of musical elements (beat, meter, rhythm, tempo, melody, harmony.) 11. Composers intention: Did the performance communicate what the composer wanted you to hear? 12. Short biographical notes about the composer(s). 13. Include you own subjective opinion, reaction, and judgment of the music heard, the effect it may have had on you and the quality of the performance-but be very brief.

CONCEPT UNDERSTANDING PERFORMANCE CRITIQUE PRESENTATION

The extent to which the student understands musical concepts such as rhythm, pitch, notation, tone, dynamics, balance, and meter

The quality of the student’s analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of a piece of music

How the student presents their critique: organization, voice, writing conventions (spelling, grammar, punctuation, paragraphing, capitalization), and neatness

3

The student is aware of and can make discriminations among musical sounds, gestures, or techniques

Musical terminology is, for the most part, used correctly.

Ideas are unambiguous and fully explained.

The student makes clear distinctions between ideas and elements.

The student uses examples.

Analysis: The student makes many specific and appropriate references to musical elements in the performance and provides relevant, quality details.

Interpretation: The student hypothesizes the theme or meaning of the piece, describes the mood

or impact of the music and what the composer did to create that mood or impact, uses metaphors, shows insight, maintains focus, and considers alternative interpretations.

Evaluation: The student makes and defends judgments about the work (originality, craftsmanship, impact), takes a stand and sticks with it and provides strong support for arguments with facts, examples, or explanations. The reader develops an appreciation and respect for the writer’s position.

Presentation is compelling and moves the reader through the text.

Details seem to fit where they’re placed, sequencing is logical and effective, an inviting introduction draws the reader, and a satisfying conclusion leaves the reader with a sense of completion.

Pacing is well controlled—it spends just the right amount of time on each point and there are thoughtful transitions between ideas.

The tone and flavor are appropriate for the message the author wants to send.

The reader wants to continue reading.

Errors in conventions are so few and so minor that the reader can easily overlook them.

CONCEPT UNDERSTANDING PERFORMANCE CRITIQUE PRESENTATION

The quality of the student’s analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of a piece of music

How the student presents their critique: organization, voice, writing conventions (spelling, grammar, punctuation, paragraphing, capitalization), and neatness

2

Some terminology is used correctly, some is not.

Although some distinctions are accurately made, important differences are overlooked.

There is inconsistent development of ideas.

Analysis: The student seems comfortable with identifying and discussing some musical elements, but others are either missing or not analyzed correctly.

Interpretation: There is inconsistent development of ideas. Although some distinctions are accurately made, important parts may be overlooked.

Evaluation: A central point is made, but without sufficient elaboration to indicate any in-depth understanding. Some arguments may seem tentative or a bit lame. The writer may rely too much on just one argument. Facts, examples, or explanations provide marginally adequate, but not strong, support.

The presentation easily moves the reader through the text without undue confusion.

The paper has a recognizable, if not compelling, introduction and conclusion,

Pacing is fairly well controlled, though sometimes the writer spurts ahead too quickly or spends too much time on details that do not matter.

Transitions sometimes work well and sometimes connections between ideas are fuzzy.

The organization generally supports the main point, although sometimes the reader wants to move things around.

Conventions are sometimes handled well and enhance readability; at other times errors are distracting and impair readability.

1

The student has trouble making discriminations among musical sounds, gestures, or techniques.

Vocabulary is used incorrectly. Ideas are confusing.

The student does not illustrate points with examples.

Analysis: The music is treated as a vague whole; little analysis of the music—comments on different musical elements—is evident.

Interpretation: Instead of developing ideas, the student merely states, or restates, them. The student offers no justification for his interpretation.

Evaluation: The student begins with one position and then totally and arbitrarily changes course. Arguments are weak or hard to follow. The reader either feels unconvinced or unsure what position the writer wants her to take. The student offers no justification for his position.

The organization makes it difficult to judge the quality of the ideas.

There is no real introduction or conclusion.

Pacing feels awkward—the writer slows to a crawl when the reader wants to get on with it, and vice versa.

Connections between ideas are confusing or missing.

Ideas that seem to go together aren’t placed together.

The writer speaks in a kind of monotone that makes the writing boring to read.

Sentences are choppy, incomplete, rambling, or awkward.

Conventions (spelling, grammar, punctuation) repeatedly distract the reader and make the text difficult to read.
