A REFLECTION FROM AARON KELLY, THE SEMINARIAN WHO HAS BEEN ASSISTING FR. VAN LIESHOUT AND HELPING OUT IN OUR PARISH THIS SUMMER

Dear Friends in Christ,

During the month of August, the calendar is filled with the feasts of many great saints – St. Alphonsus Liguori (Aug 1), St. John Vianney (Aug 4), St. Dominic (Aug 8), St. Lawrence (Aug 10), St. Clare (Aug 11), St. Maximilian Kolbe (Aug 14), St. Bernard (Aug 20), St. Bartholomew (Aug 24), St. Monica (Aug 27), St. Augustine (Aug 28), John the Baptist (Aug 29), and two feasts of the Blessed Mother (Aug 15 and Aug 22). With these great feasts, I think it is an opportune time for us to reflect on our own call to holiness and our goal of becoming saints ourselves.

To start simply, what is a saint? A saint is a person that is in heaven and enjoying eternal life forever with God. There are those saints who are canonized, like those mentioned above, and have been declared by the Church to be in heaven because of their lives of heroic virtue. But there are also those countless men and women who have lived the Christian life, who have died, and are now enjoying their eternal reward. These men and women may never be canonized or officially recognized by the Church, but they too are saints. This should be our ultimate goal, our ultimate desire – to be saints. Lumen Gentium reads, “All Christians in any state or walk of life are called to the fullness of Christian life and to the perfection of charity.” You and I are called to be saints, each in our own way, according to our state of life. We call this the universal call to holiness. For us to become saints we must live our lives well. We must allow the theological virtues, which I wrote about the past few weeks, to take root in our lives. We must allow the grace of God to be at work in us. The beautiful thing is that we don’t need to do extraordinary things in order to become saints. We don’t need to be the founder of a religious order like St. Dominic, St. Clare, or St. Alphonsus Liguori. We don’t all need to be priests who spend twelve hours a day in the confessional like St. John Vianney. We don’t need to write hundreds, or more likely thousands of pages like St. Augustine or St. Bernard. And most likely, we will not be called upon to give up our lives in martyrdom, like St. Lawrence, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Bartholomew, or St. John the Baptist. No, we are being called to live the ordinariness of our lives extraordinarily.

How do we do this? I would like to propose the example of another saint, namely St. Thérèse of Lisieux. St. Thérèse, is known for what is called “The Little Way.” She writes, “Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love.” In short, the path to sanctity is to do the smallest things, with the greatest love. That means cooking dinner, with love; driving your kids to soccer practice, with love; going to work, with love; cutting the grass, with love. We turn everything we do into an act of love. Holiness does not come, however, without the Cross. Again, Thérèse writes, “True love feeds on sacrifice and becomes more pure and strong the more our natural satisfaction is denied.” Love is purified by sacrifice and sacrifice can bear great fruit when offered for others.

In short, the entire goal of the Christian life is sanctity, to be saints. Help one another and encourage one another in this process. Rely, too, on the “great cloud of witnesses” that have gone before us. Read the lives of the saints and strive for their perfection. Remember the words of St. Thérèse: “Remember that nothing is small in the eyes of God. Do all that you do with love.”

Pax et bonum,

Aaron Kelly
