FEBRUARY: MONTH OF THE HOLY FAMILY

February is the month dedicated to the Holy Family.

Although the start of the Lenten season changes from year to year, this year we have the whole month of February to transition

from the feast of Christmas to the fasting of Lent.

It is within the Holy Family where Jesus spent the time between his birth and embarking on his public journey.

By meditating on the Holy Family, we can learn the meaning of love, obedience, and true fatherhood and motherhood. We are also

reminded that the family is the foundational unit of both society and the Church.

THE SPECIAL INTENTIONS OF POPE FRANCIS for the month February

Universal - Human Trafficking Dear Lord Jesus,

During this month of February, we cry out to you and pray for the victims of human trafficking, of enforced prostitution and of violence.

Rescue them, O Lord! ~AMEN~

CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS As required by the Diocese, Contribution Statements were mailed out last month. However, we discovered that there was an error in the posting date for those contributions given at the end of the year, namely those for Christmas and the end of December. If you would like a revised statement or if you did not receive one, please call the Parish Office. We also want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who give so generously of your time, talent and treasure.

We are truly grateful!

FROM THE PASTOR

Praised be Jesus Christ!

A few weeks ago a parishioner who was away on a trip for a week brought me back a bulletin from the parish she attended while traveling, and I read in it a great little catechesis on the Precepts of the Church.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes the precepts of the Church as “positive laws decreed by the pastoral authorities [which are] meant to guarantee to the faithful the very necessary minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort, in the growth in love of God and neighbor.” In other words, the five precepts of the Church are a short summary of the bare minimum of what it looks like to be a practicing Catholic, in good standing. The Catechism lists five of them and phrases them as follows (CCC §2042-2043):

1. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation and rest from servile labor

2. You shall confess your sins at least once a year

3. You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season

4. You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church

5. You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church

Some other lists also add a sixth:

6. You shall observe the marriage laws of the Church.

Not wanting to be outdone by some other parish’s bulletin (I’m only joking!), I plan on starting next week a six-week long bulletin column series explaining each of the Precepts of the Church, one by one. If I start next week, I will finish the series before Palm Sunday, so I hope the articles will be a good preparation for Lent and carry us through the initial weeks of that season.

* * *

Regarding preparation for Lent, I would love for this Lent to see an influx of fallen-away Catholics in our parish return to regular reception of the Sacraments and weekly Mass attendance. In the weeks that remain before Ash Wednesday, can you help me to pray for that intention? Here’s a prayer that you can use for your family-members, friends, and neighbors, praying for exactly this intention through the intercession of Saint John Paul II:

Saint John Paul II, as Pope you worked tirelessly for the return of those separated from God and cut off from His Church.

Now that you look upon the face of the Lord in heaven, I ask you to intercede for (mention names).

May God’s grace bring them back to the practice of the faith and remove all obstacles that prevent them from receiving His abundant mercy, which flows sacramentally through the heart of His holy Church.

Through the intercession of Mary, the Mother of God, their guardian angels, their patron saints and through your watchful intercession, Saint John Paul II, may they receive pardon from their sins and freedom from whatever hinders their return to the arms of the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. Amen.

In the hearts of Jesus and Mary,

Father Peter Van Lieshout
