Dear Parents and Caregivers

As the 2017 school year comes to an end this week I thank you sincerely for the support you have given us as we have tried to help your son develop the talents God has given him this year. We hope your son has

had a good year.

REPORTS

A report summarising academic progress will be posted home to all parents of Year 9 and Year 10 students at the end of this week. This report should be read in conjunction with the comments made by staff during

the year on the parent portal of KAMAR.

NCEA EXAMS AND RESULTS

Thank you to Mr Martyn Turner and his team who supervised the NCEA external examinations. NCEA exams

ran very smoothly. A reminder that students have to access their results online from the NZQA website. Results are not posted to students. Results will be available from mid-January.

JUNIOR PRIZEGIVING

Our year finished with Junior Prizegiving on Friday morning at 10am. Thank you to those parents who were able to be with us.

YEAR 10 CAMPS

Our Year 10 camps were again extremely successful. We are so fortunate to have our campsite in the Waiohine Gorge. Thank you to Mr Chris Taylor and our staff who make these camps possible. CHANGES FOR 2018

As you are aware we have carried out a review of our curriculum and our pastoral care systems during 2017 and will be introducing some changes in 2018. These include:

1. We will be changing from a 6 period day to a 5 period day to give us longer learning times and to

reduce the number of movements around the College during the day. This is in line with our focus

on the Value of Learning.

2. School will start 10 minutes later each day at 8.55am. This is largely because many of our students

who bus to school are frequently 5 to 10 minutes late through no fault of their own. This change

should give them plenty of space to get to school on time.

3. On Wednesdays from Week Two of Term 1, the school day will start at 9.15am. This will enable the

staff to have time for professional learning every week for 55 minutes before school. So much is

changing in all areas of education that we need quality time to keep abreast of the latest research in

how to be effective teachers so we believe this time will be invaluable.

4. We will be placing an 85% attendance requirement on all students who represent the College in

sports or cultural activities.

5. We are reducing the amount of assessment in senior courses to a maximum of 21 credits per

subject. We want to keep the focus on learning and not overdo the number of assessments.

We thank all these staff for the contribution they have made to our College and their commitment to our

students.

DIGITAL DEVICES FOR YEAR 12 AND 13 STUDENTS IN 2018

In recent years, St Patrick’s College has embraced digital technology to enhance teaching and learning, and

are now at a stage where our next Year 12 cohort will have used Chromebooks throughout their secondary education. We would strongly recommend Year 12 and 13 students bring a device to support their learning.

For many students this will continue to be their Chromebook as this will continue to be perfectly adequate for the majority of courses. Other devices with a suitable screen and keyboard would also be acceptable.

We recognise that some courses will benefit from specific software, and many students may wish to begin using a device that they will take to university.

BUILDING ISSUES

Our Board of Proprietors are pressing on with seismic strengthening and roof replacements. Over the holiday period scaffolding will be erected over the Egden Block and the top of the building will be tented.

The roof will be replaced and a full asbestos clean will take place. Once that is finished the building will be

strengthened. The plan is that we will be able to continue to work in the ground floor administration area while the work takes place though our Library will be off limits while this work is done.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and safe and relaxing holiday period.

Please take time to join with Christian communities all around the world by

going to Mass in your local parish at Christmas. We celebrate the birth of Jesus who brought such hope and joy to our world. May we all remember the

message of the Angels “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and good will toward men”.

TOP WEEKLY NOTES

Congratulations to the following students who have achieved top weekly notes in their year level. It was

pleasing to be able to present at prize-giving awards a financial remuneration to those who gained the most Top Weekly Notes during the year.

Prayers Please

We also remember in our prayers the grandfather of Lawrence (Year 9) and Joseph White (Year 12) and the

grandmother of Manaaki White (Year 10). Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

THE MINISTRY TEAM

The Year 9 retreats were held on Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th of November. This retreat time developed the theme “You are no longer strangers”. This quote from the Letter to the Ephesians was related

to the experience of the boys as they began a new College in Year 9 and to the growing sense of

brotherhood among them. Our time together began in the chapel with Fr Crawford exposing the Blessed Sacrament and leading benediction. The boys were then divided into their core classes for several activities

such as meditation, praying with colour, a prayer wall, and writing a letter to their future selves. The final activity was a “Great Race”; an orientation type competition to gather clues relevant to St Patrick’s from

around the College. The boys then gathered in the chapel to round off the retreat time in prayer.

The Ministry Team has been meeting to continue to plan the coming year. Our

final event will be the Advent Masses for Year 9 and 10 in this the final week of school. These Masses celebrate the conclusion of the school year and look

forward to the coming of the Lord Jesus at Christmas. We pray that the birth of the infant Jesus bestows on our students and their families all the blessings they

need at this time. May you all have a very happy and holy Christmas.

DEVELOPMENT OFFICE

In 2017 the St Patrick's College Wellington Foundation has supported the College with the following grants.

16 Chromebooks for students who would otherwise be unable to purchase their own device.

Instruments for the Music Department, including keyboards and saxophone.

A video camera and tripod.

Equipment for the Drama Department.

A guitar and assistance towards tutoring costs for the Kapa Haka group.

Lava lavas for the Poly group.

The Foundation is incredibly grateful to everyone who generously gifted donations that enable us to in turn

support the College. We could not achieve what we do without working together as a community. If you

would like to consider a gift to the Foundation, please email Louise McKenzie at [email protected].

PUBLIC SPEAKING

The annual Wellington Speaking Union Senior and

Junior Oratory competition was held on 24 October and 31 October respectively.

In the junior section, St Patrick’s College was

represented by Year 10 student Lucas Boennic who won the prestigious Dunsheath Plate for his speech

about his and his family’s experience of the 2011

Canterbury earthquake. Lucas’ first place win was well deserved for his outstanding crafting and

delivery. St Patrick’s College has won the Dunsheath Plate for Junior Orator for four out of the last five

years so Lucas can be pleased to have continued this

legacy. Lucas was coached by Ms Lynley Reid.

Year 12 student Ralph Zambrano represented the College in the senior section with a well- structured

and sincere speech linked to his Young Marist

Neighbours experience this year. Although Ralph did not win one of the top three places in the competition,

he demonstrated his accomplished skills as a speaker and is a testament to the ongoing value of the Young

Marist Neighbours programme. Ralph was coached by Mr Derek Wood.

MARIST WHANGANUI AWA RELAY RUN

Last week six students from St. Patrick’s College travelled to Whanganui to participate in the second annual

Marist Whanganui Awa relay run. The event, organised by Cullinane College and Mark Walls’ Young Marists

team, involved seven Marist schools: St. Pat’s Town, St. Pat’s Silverstream, Hato Paora, St. John’s, St. Bede’s Cullinane College and Roncalli College.

The run took place along the Whanganui River Road

from Ohakune to Whanganui. Students ran 50km each over the course of three days. On the journey

they travelled through some of the area’s important historical sites including Pipiriki, Hiruharama

(Jerusalem), Ranana and Parikino. At night, the

students immersed themselves in the history and culture of the area, staying on three different marae

and learning local waiata.

The purpose of the trip was to fundraise for the Te Whaiti, Minginui community which is

visited annually by Year 12 students in the Young Marist Neighbours’ programme. The money raised goes towards

funding scholarships for students in this community to attend Marist schools and gain access to an NCEA

qualification. Anybody wishing to make a donation in support of this cause please contact:[email protected]

RETURN OF TEXT BOOKS OR LIBRARY BOOKS

home, he must return them to the school office, which will be open until

Monday 18 December for any returns and fee payments. Any un-returned textbooks or library books will be charged to your account. No students will

be able to be issued textbooks for the New Year until the old textbooks are returned or paid for.

COLLEGE OFFICE HOLIDAY TIMETABLE

The College Office will be open from Monday 11 December to Monday 18 December from 9am to 4pm daily. The College office will close on Monday 18 December at 4pm and will reopen on Wednesday 17 January

2018 at 9am.

CAREERS

Try Career Central - http://cc.school.nz/

This site is available for all students to develop their own Career profile and begin to research possible career pathways to pursue

their career passions and interests. Logon as a student and then

find St Patrick’s College and then use your Gmail account and password. This opens up different searches for each year level

based on their career needs and the complexity of their search e.g. banking jobs they have researched and developing links to

CVs, Courses and subject options. The beauty of this profile is

that it stays with the students for their duration at College as they navigate their future and they own it. It will be useful when

setting academic, cultural, spiritual and career goals.

Learner Licences – these can be practiced online and sat when 16 years of age. Gaining a restricted or full licence is an essential work skill. Passing their Learner Licence is a huge rite of passage to adulthood

and to see our young men after succeeding in such a public test is a delight, as they are so happy with

themselves.

Many thanks to the Old Boys, employers and tertiary organisations that have supported us over the year. We have had terrific support from small businesses who are training our young people and with the

economy moving also employing them.

Finally, to my loyal and wonderful staff of Colleen Flynn, Elaine

Waring and Sharryn Latta who have all done an amazing job over

the year to get our young men through their qualifications, work ready or set up for their tertiary courses, as well as looking after

me! I hope that you are all able to get a break over the summer and to see you all return to College rested for the start of 2018.

I wish you all a Happy and Holy Christmas and a wonderful New

Year.

ATHLETICS

New Zealand Secondary School Athletics 2017

A small team represented St Patrick’s College at the NZ Secondary School Athletic Championships held in Hastings from 1st to 3rd December. Joshua Nairne came 3rd in an exciting Open 800m final. Joshua was one

of the favourites as he got the Silver medal in 2016. The central Southland athlete D. Forde was the surprise winner who improved his personal best by 3 seconds, winning with 1.minute 54.18 seconds. Joshua came

home third in 1.minute 55.12 seconds.

Yasheek Rosario also gained a Silver medal in 2016 in the 100m Open final. Unfortunately, he has been

working hard all year trying to recover from a hamstring strain when he injured himself earlier in the year at McEvedy. Nick Smith, the former Champion from Hutt Valley High blasted down the track in a quick 10.61

seconds just 0.01 second off the national record. Yasheek came home 5th in the final with 11.14 seconds. Yasheek has high aspirations and wants to represent NZ in the junior under 20 Olympics.

Benjamin Ellis’ passion is Athletics. Ben’s long term goal is to represent NZ as AWD athlete in the discus. He gained a gold medal in the AWD Senior boys division with a throw of 11.89 metres. One of the highlights of

the weekend was Isaac Oliver’s performances in the senior 100m and 200m. Isaac is a Year 11 athlete and this was his first experience at a National athletics event. He ran personal bests in his 100m and went on to

make the Open boys 200m final - 7th in NZ as first year in seniors was outstanding. Mason Waterworth, one

of our very promising middle distance athletes came 12th in the Junior Boys 1500m final with a personal best of 4:22.47. His brother Jack Waterworth made the semi-final of senior boys 800m. Liam Chesney and Olaf

Manz gave very credible performances in the 1500m and 3km heats. Miguel Aizpuru missed out in the final of the Triple and Long Jump.

CRICKET

The 2017 cricket season will be one to remember for a long time. Our First XI won their first Premier Youth Grade (PYG) title for 31 years defeating Hutt International Boys by 1 wicket with just three balls to spare in

a low scoring final. Josh Mallon and Will O'Donnell, our two opening bowlers, tore through the HIBS batting

line-up snaring 7 wickets between them for just 39 runs. It was a fantastic achievement by everyone involved and just reward for the coaching staff of Darrin Thomson and Mr Millmow.

A particularly special moment for Darrin who was coaching a St Pat's cricket team for the last time after seven years of involvement. His passion and energy for the game and the boys is always very evident and

he will leave a massive void in the coaching ranks at St Pat's.

Not to be outdone, our Second XI who had been battling the relegation zone all season, suddenly sprang to

life over the final month of the season. With the injection of several talented Year 10 cricketers in the second half of the season, the team got on a roll culminating in an outstanding win over the Wellington

College 4th XI in the Premier 2 final. Chasing a lowish score of 164 on our home ground of Kilbirnie 2, they won easily with 8 wickets in hand. Oli Argent 69 not out and Jordi Cleary 67 not out putting on 139 for the

third wicket and ensuring a comprehensive victory. Congratulations to their coaches Kevin McAlister and

Father Crawford and just rewards for all of their hard work during the season.

The Junior 1 Year 9 team have also enjoyed a golden run in Term 4 winning five of their six games. Harry

Kidd, Ethan Jefferson and Jacob Hodson have all scored centuries for them this year which is an incredible

effort in 40 over cricket matches. Coach Tony Hodson has done an outstanding job moulding this team into a very competitive unit and best wishes to them for their NZCT tournament which starts this week.

Upcoming events on the cricket calendar

Games against Waverley College from Sydney on the 12th December. First XI pre-season trip to the Hawkes

Bay in early January and the new entrant Year 9 trial on Thursday 25th January.

Thank you to everyone that has played a part in the success so many of our teams have enjoyed this

season. Your support is very much appreciated.

SPORTS ROUND-UP

This year has been a stellar year for sport at the College, notably the 1st XI cricket and 1st XI football teams both winning Wellington titles and our Futsal team winning a national title. We also won both our major

winter exchanges against St Pat’s Silverstream and Wellington College. But we cannot rest on our laurels. Strength and conditioning training is now kicking in for our Premier One winter codes in 2018. The extended

1st XV rugby squad began their pre-season fitness last week under Greg Foe and next week our 1st XI

footballers, Senior A basketballers and top track and field athletes start twice weekly 7am sessions under High Performance Sport NZ strength and conditioning coach Hamish Kyne.

Congratulations to our

outstanding Year 9 cyclist

Josh Turnbull (pictured, white helmet), who

completed the 160km round Taupo Cycle Challenge on

Saturday.

Josh had to get a

dispensation to ride the event because of his age

(14) and finished in 5 hours 2 minutes and 14 seconds.

JUNIOR VOLLEYBALL

The Junior Volleyball Team has

had a great Term 4 placing 8th at Regionals, winning the

Junior Boys Wellington Division 1 and also winning the

Wellington Junior Invitational

Tournament. Well done to the players and a big thanks to our

great coaches Willie Ranfurly and Angela Wong-Ranfurly.

WATER POLO

Traditional against Liston College, Auckland

On Monday 20th of November the Junior Water Polo Squad played a friendly against Liston College at the

Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre. As the Liston team had some seniors playing this enabled SPC to field both the A’s and the B’s for a half each. St Pat’s won quite handily, so the Challenge Cup remains in our

cabinet another year. A shared afternoon tea in the College library rounded out the encounter. Thanks to Mr

Ian “Cuz” McLaughlan for organising the visit from Liston College.

Junior Water Polo North Island Championships - Auckland

Wednesday 22nd saw an early start for the Junior squad, catching a 6.45am flight to Auckland. Both teams

had a couple of friendlies against Sacred Heart and Mt Albert Grammar to acclimatise to the Auckland conditions. The competition began the following day. Both teams performed admirably in strong pools in

their respective divisions. The A’s had one point losses to the eventual winners of the competition, Tauranga

Boys’ College and third place getters Kristin College. They eventually finished a somewhat disappointing 13th. The B’s struggled with great heart to eventually have a win and a draw to finish 15th in the B Division. Due

to some absences of squad members, all the boys had significant amounts of time in the pool. This involvement enabled all players to grow in experience and skills.

The A’s did come away with a title win from the competition – it was agreed that the game against HIBS in

post-pool play would serve as the final for our local competition. The A’s won this comfortably 7-3, taking

out the Wellington Regional Junior Boys’ Competition for 2017.

While our teams finished lower in the North Island competition than we would have hoped, it is encouraging that in a very difficult pool the A’s were not far off the standard of the eventual winners. What the

competition showed was our boys need to play tougher games more frequently to prepare for the games

against the more competitive upper North Island schools.

We expect the boys will continue to swim and train over summer holidays so they can be ready for the Senior season which begins very quickly after the beginning of classes in 2018. Our thanks to our coaches,

Mr Philippe Bransfield and Mr Tim Chambers, Managers; Mr Florio Zande and Mr Alastair van Boom for their dedication and time. Thanks also to our dedicated Committee members who all through the year give up

their time and talents to organise and seek funding for these events.

HISTORY LOCKED IN THE CREST!

ST PATRICKS COLLEGE & MARIST ST PATS RFC

Following the merger of Marist Old Boys RFC and St Patricks College Old Boys RFC in 1971, the adoption of Marist St Pats' famous scarlet jersey in 1974 required a new crest to go with it. The crest, which was

designed to reflect the identities of the two merged clubs, was:

to be a shield of armour to have a white Christian cross at the centre. The cross would have four blue stars on it, as the

New Zealand flag has four stars, and

to have four quadrants on each corner of the shield of armour.

The significance of each quadrant is:

The upper left quadrant has the Society of Mary logo, representing the Marist Fathers

that taught at St Patricks College from 1885. The lower right quadrant has the logo of the Marist Brothers to represent the Brothers who have

taught at many schools throughout New Zealand since 1876

The upper right quadrant has three green waves representing the Marist Brothers Old Boys Rugby

Club The lower left quadrant has three blue waves representing the St Patrick’s College

Football Club (Old Boys’ Section). The three waves were chosen because the St Patrick’s

College monogram had the ‘three books of learning’.

Students wishing to continue with rugby training over the summer months are welcome to make the

usual arrangements with the Marist St Pats Club. Phone or text MSP’s full-time Coaching Co-ordinator (and St Patricks College Old Boy) Kas Lealamanua 021 120 3958 or say “Hi” to Kas who is at the

gym most week days.

Come down and meet our coaches along with MSP’s new trainer Max Symes who has

recently completed an internship with the Highlanders.

All new and returning players (including school leavers) from all grades are welcome to join the Marist St

Pats family. We're ready to help you develop your fitness over the summer to be in the best shape for 2018!
