A bilingual Advent Parish Reconciliation will take place on Wednesday, December 19th, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm in the church. There will be 15 visiting priests hearing confessions. Please take advantage of this beautiful opportunity to make peace with God and prepare spiritually yourself for this coming Christmas. Ministers of Care Needed! Our Ministry of Care group is looking for more people to join us in helping the homebound to be able to receive the Holy Eucharist. We are blessed to have 14 ministers, but we need more. This is a very rewarding ministry. The visits take about 12 to 15 minutes, and consist of short pray-ers, reading the Gospel, and distributing commun-ion. Our homebound parishioners truly look for-ward to receiving Jesus. Father Przemek will be offering training sessions beginning in February. Please give this ministry serious thought. SJB Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Children's Liturgy of the Word con-tinues to grow as more children are joining us for this special worship experience. The Liturgy is geared especially for children ages 6-10. It is a special opportunity for children to understand and appreciate Scrip-ture at Sunday Mass. Basically, after the opening prayer (Collect) at the 10:45 a.m. English Mass and 12:30 p.m. Polish Mass, the children are invited to come for-ward with two adult Catechists and go to the Music Room in Church to participate in their own Liturgy of the Word. Children’s Liturgy of the Word of-fers an experience for children to hear Scripture in words they under-stand and to share their own under-standing of God's word. The children return to the main par-ish assembly for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We warmly invite all children in the parish to participate in the Children’s Liturgy of the Word. All parents, please encourage your children to join when a clergy invite them to come forward to hear the Good News. The Children’s Liturgy of the Word ministry will continue until June of 2019. Two Ways to Maximize Your Charitable Gift and Minimize Your Taxes

1. A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a withdrawal from an individual retirement account that is sent directly to a charity. You instruct your IRA custodian to send the money to the organization you specify. Who can do this? Anyone who is 70 1/2 or older at the time of the do-nation, wants to support a worthy cause, and reduce their taxes. (After you reach age 70 1/2, you are re-quired to withdraw funds annual from your IRA and report the distributions as income on your tax return.) What's happening this year? Why the new inter-est in QCDs? A qualified charitable distribution preserves a way to donate money to charity and still enjoy tax benefits under the new tax law. Traditionally, people who contribute to charity item-ize their deductions; as such, they get a tax benefit for their gifts. Under the new tax law, may of these same people will be better off using the new and much larger standard deduction. But, in doing so -- in not itemizing -- they get no tax benefit from donat-ing to charity. 2. You can give an appreciated stock and use the cash donation (you were going to donate) to re-purchase the stock -- thereby wiping out all the ap-preciation/capital gains liability as you do not need to recognize any capital gain on a charitable gift of ap-preciated stock. When you ultimately sell the stock, you'll pay less taxes. St. John Brebeuf parish does not give tax or legal advice. We recommend that donors consult their own professional tax advisor before making a gift.
