Dear Parishioners, On the last weekend of August we learned about Joshua and his growth as a person of influence. He made great strides as successor to Moses. Initially lacking in confidence, with God's assurances he grew to be a strong leader. The tribal differences of the Israelites were similar to our challenges today. The twelve tribes were not unlike schools of thought and neighborhoods in our country. They were even more similar to groups in the Chicagoland area where people, even gen-erally good people, divide themselves up into cliques, vot-ing blocks by ethnicity, social class, religion, and other arti-ficial barriers sometimes determined only by street address or color of their skin. These divisions frequently lead to turf wars, conflict, a lack of respect in public discourse, violence and sometimes even to a deadly apathy when people finally can't take it any-more. Sadly, studies have shown, we are most segregated on Sunday morning. We all know better. This is the opposite of how God wants us to love one another. This is opposite of what it means to be a disciple. As the fall national and local elections draw closer, I ask everyone to try to maintain some civility in your discourse. Please remember, Sunday Mass, parish parties, and events are not the occasion for electioneering or engaging in de-bates with people who are often caught off guard. Even un-intentionally, these encounters can feel like entrapment to the unsuspecting person who perhaps has other very person-al issues on their mind, like a recent cancer diagnoses or a death of loved one. People come to church to pray for healing and hope, not be put into a situation that they are not emotionally or spiritual-ly prepared for. I try to be sensitive, too, admittedly not al-ways successfully, to avoid preaching which is judgmental or insensitive to the different histories of individuals or groups. Yes, we must preach the Gospel, but always in a manner that respects the individual and allows for a fair and even discussion. Please note, the parish does not support such activities as mentioned above. The parish never gives permission to put fliers on cars both as advertisements of businesses or in this case political ads. We have a wonderful parish with great people. I appreciate your kind respect to all who come to worship with us. Peace, Fr. Mike Meany

Mike Meany

Our “My Stewardship Story” series continues. Thanks to Josephine Antoinette “JoJo” Malinowski for shar-ing her story. We hope it will inspire you to consider your own stewardship activities!

My Stewardship Story: Josephine Antoinette “JoJo” Malinowski My Aunt and Uncle move to Village of Niles in Summer of 1968. My Uncle Matt Potoczek was a loyal parishioner at St John Brebeuf Parish. I was baptized at St. John Brebeuf Parish in April 2015, after going through the RCIA program. I was welcomed into the parish. My Uncle Matt attended St. John Brebeuf Parish Mass every Sun-day morning, going to church until his passing in October, 2013. I continued his journey in our faith. My faith has played a major role in my life and in my upbringing. The faith that My Uncle and I share has instilled in me God's Glory will reign forever. I have walked in my faith each and every day, and I have represented the Catholic Wom-en's Club since July, 2016. I am currently the president of that organization. I enjoy being involved in the church and the community. With the Catholic Women's Club, I have helped or-ganized the Christmas Winter Wonderland Fair and St. Joseph's Table, just to name a few of the events. I was influenced as a young adult by my good neighbor. He would tease me by saying, “the Church is going to burn down" because I was not Catholic. Believe in your faith, and God will guide you in the right direction.

Father Meany will host another "Listening Session" on Monday, October 22, from 7-8 pm in the Parish Min-istry Center. The Parish Pastoral Council and parish staff all feel that during these difficult times it is important to listen to each other without judgement. This will be an opportunity to ask questions and hear concerns about the sexu-al abuse issues within the Church and the recent increased awareness of sexual assault within the workplace. A small group gathered on Wednesday, October 3, for the first "Listening Session." In addition to parishion-ers and parish staff, two representatives attended from the Archdiocese of Chicago Office for the Protection of Children and Youth. The group discussed many thoughtful questions, and also talked about what efforts our parish and Archdio-cese take to create a safe environment for children and vulnerable adults. One of the themes that came up sev-eral times was the wish for more people to attend to listen to others' questions and learn about these issues.

All are invited to attend the session scheduled for Monday, October 22.

“Wrapped in God’s Love” Completed blankets should be dropped off on the weekend of October 20-21 and Oct. 27—28. Thank you for your partici-pation!
